#DC rant

Can someone genuinely answer this ever lingering question as to why DC has such beef with Jason Todd?
They butcher his character and relationships, and for what? There’s so much fucking POTENTIAL not only with his character but with his story! There’s a way to actually write discourse in a relationship without making it so damn abusive. Maybe I’m missing something in the story or just in general, but it’s just so fucking irritating when it could be good.
You have a nice, good boy who only wants to help despite given the short hand in life who is then given a loving father who just so happens to be Batman. That boy is then murdered by Batman’s biggest enemy (don’t even get me started on the fucking Joker who essentially has become idolized in the worst ways by DC writers and directors) still trying to do the right thing despite being fucked over by the very person he so desperately wanted love from. Then, you have that same boy who’s just a little bit older, hurting and angry— acting out in every way he can against the man who loves him but couldn’t see past his own weaknesses. And what do DC writers do instead of making this complicated, intriguing and character growing relationship into something that’s not as fucking dumb and slightly out of character for Batman? They fuck him up.
It’s an extreme to say this, I know. And this isn’t against all DC writers, but you can’t deny a lie when it’s a pattern. It’s a cut and dry story that practically writes itself. You have a little boy who is so full of hope is growing along with the main character of the story (which, in my own personal opinion, Batman has Robin not as a soldiers—and omfg does that damn phrase make me violent—but as a potential, mutual factor of character growth) , who then gets a bit too cocky and distracted by his own hubris and need for love, to a hurt antagonist that goes against the man who he once called father. Like it’s too easy to not fuck this up, and yet DC seems to manages to do this every single time.
It’s almost like they want to portray Batman and Bruce Wayne as a man who is made “tougher” by his trauma (which has some patriarchal undertones if you catch my drift) instead of growing. Batman can grow. He can love. There’s one post that I’ve seen on Tumblr how Batman/Bruce does this whole vigilante thing out of love.
Which is why I don’t get why DC uses Bruce as a tool to hurt Jason when it isn’t really consistent. He loved Jason, and this is backed up by a lot of older and a few current issues. Don’t get me wrong, I get that their relationship post-UTRH is gonna be FUCKED. Yet, even the writing in that I can’t really agree with. KILLING (attempting to kill really) your son who had been dead for years, that you loved so much, and is acting out because YOU? Doesn’t make much sense, but, again, maybe I’m looking at this through a foggy lens.
This wasn’t meant to be a long post, but it’s just been on my mind and perhaps I could use another perspective. So, again, what’s DC’s deal with Jason and Bruce’s relationship, and Jason’s character as a whole?

petition for superhero movies to start acknowledging their character’s trauma more.
and not just “bruce wayne’s parents died” or “ben parker died”
i’m talking about their superhero trauma.  acknowledge dick grayson’s parental role over the rest of the robins. mcu peter parker’s inferiority regarding literally everyone around him. talk about bruce’s trauma with the joker.
i want to see scenes of them waking up in a cold sweat over something we’ve never seen them fret over before. i want to see dick grayson nearly murdering some random street thug in a fight because he got caught in a flashback. i want to see damian wayne snap at a female figure in his life when they say words his mother said to him often. i want actual trauma responses showcased through these people. i want to see miles and peter bond over how literally terrifying rhino is. i want to see alfred acknowledge how dick was a parent that none of the robins had. i want to see dick’s loss of jason showcased, his grief and guilt.
i want it to be raw and realistic. i want more than just their commonly known things to be explored.

Guess I'm really doing this now.
Rant about Dceased: Dead Planet as someone who enjoyed Dceased and DCeased: Unkillables
It was mainly a John Constatine run.
Which would be fine, if it was properly marketed this way.
Because it starts with talking about the new Justice League and the Big Three, Jon, Damian and Cassie. But they aren't often the ones moving the plot forward, taking agency and all that. Sure, they appear, they talk, their growth is shown, but it doesn't feel like that these are our protagonists.
And the big bad evil that was teasered in issue two only became revelant halfway through issue six. Making it one and a half issues. The pacing was so, so off with that one.
Another issue is with how death is handled. In DCeased and DCeased: Unkillables, death MATTERED. It was brought up time and time again. The victims were mourned, they were remembered.
Here? They may sacrifice themselves. Then something nice is said about them. Maybe in the next issue as well, but that's it. Just abandoned toys.
Rag Man's death was important for the story but he isn't even mentioned after his death. With Blue Devil, at least Detective Chimp regrets that he didn't listen to him when he said they should turn back.
Don't even get me started on Jason. He was one of the protagonists in DCeased: Unkillables, a leader even. Here, he barely made an appearance. Which, yeah, okay, he doesn't have to. He had a reunion with Damian, which was nice. He is part of the Shadowpact, so still a fighter. But this was in the early early issues. In the middle, there was just nothing. And when he died in issue 5, it still didn't feel earned.
Killing someone early is one thing. Killing someone in the later middle? Build up to that! Sure, he comments a few times in issue 5, he introduced Damian to Rose, his wife. He and Rose talked during the battle for a bit. But it's simply not enough.
Damian comments in issue 6 that he think Jason has changed and he would have liked to know the guy he'd become. But all of Jason's character growth in DCeased happened in DCeased: Unkillables, which takes place DURING the apocalypse. Dceased: Dead Planet tales place 5 years after the apocalypse! Show me how he has changed! Show me how Swamp Thing thinks that Jason "was a good being" because they haven't met in DCeased: Unkillables.
Rose can see glimpses of the future and yet nothing is done with it except right before Jason dies. Again, the writers can't really agree on how her precognition power works. In Unkillables they had at least two instances in which they made references to her seeing multiple futures. Once when she didn't want to open the door of her apartment because "In every future I see, I open the door and I die" and the other one when Slade was sacrificing himself and there was this text of "She couldn't see a future in which they both survived".
So yeah, not this quick "5 seconds before it happens" like in Dead Planet. Characters can easily still say something before the event she sees takes place.
And all the loose ends that were never wrapped up.
I'm tired of this and I'm just leaving if at that.

Actually, now that I've calmed down, you know what I actually, sincerely want, and probably won't get, in a non-venting way?
I want to Tim to be allowed to admit that he's been avoiding Stephanie because he knew that she would make this whole thing harder for him. I want him to be allowed to be afraid that she was going to, first, resent him for wanting someone who wasn't her and, second, mock him relentlessly for what he wants and for being afraid of telling her like she does with everything else in his life.
Figuring out your sexuality is hard enough as it is without the knowledge that a so-called "friend" is going to go out of their way to make an ass out of you in your moment of vulnerability because they think it's funny. And don't give me the bullshit that Steph wouldn't do that. Even if she wouldn't -- which she would, because you know she can be extremely careless with other people's feelings on a good day and a petty, mean-spirited little monster when she's hurt, not to mention very prone to do things that she regrets but can't take back -- it's fair for Tim to believe that she would given how she's treated him in the past, and how she's treated other people in the past as well.
We haven't gotten a lot of Tim's relationship with Bernard yet, but what we've gotten has been very focused on how safe Tim feels with him, how supported he feels, how secure he feels.
He has more than enough damn good reasons to feel none of those things around Stephanie.
He should get to own it.
(And he shouldn't have to apologize for it either!)

Tim Drake's Gotham
Or the Tim Drake's Rescue Project
By @lahonestidadenmi-blog
You may like Tim Drake as a character. You may like his stories. Taste is subjective.
Objectively he sucks. Compared to the rest of the Bat-family he sucks. So I am wasting my time in a project that comes close to fanfiction if I am willing to insult fanfiction. I don't have the time to do this idea justice as fanfiction. I don't have the talent to turn it into images. So I will keep it as a vague idea.
Tim Drake is a redundant character that has nothing to offer to the Batman mythos because anything he does is being done better by other characters that are more popular and more established than he is.
So lets find the issues that need fixing and keep them in mind. This issues are present in many characters in western comics. Tim Drake has all this issues.
He has no superhero identity of his own. Red Robin is nothing more than a reskin of his Robin identity. The Robin mantle is firmly in the hands of Damian and that is not going to change. His "Drake" identity is a bad joke. If it sticks and is accepted by the public I am eating my own socks with bechamel sauce.
He does not have a distinct fighting style/weapon that makes his actions scenes distinct to look at. Jason has guns and brutality. Dick has acrobatics and funny sticks. Damian has a sword and is a tiny little shit making the differences between heights something fun to draw/look at. Batman has gadgets... and he is better than anyone else at literally everything but this is not the place for that rant. (MuffinMonstah’s note: He didn’t even remembered Tim used a Bo-staff while he was writing this intro. After I reminded him, he said: “My point still stands. Because when I think of sticks, I think of Nightwing”)
He does not have supporting characters or significant relationships with other heroes that are distinct and exclusive to him. His team ups/super hero teams are barely a re thread of stories that were done better with other Robins. The relationships he has with the Bat-Family members are the most boring when they are depicted at all. This comes from the following...
He does not have any aspect of his personality that is distinct enough to make him interesting. Jason is the violent one. Dick is the funny one. Damian is the dude with antisocial tendencies that learns to keep them in check. Tim is... Smart?  Bi?
He does not have any identity trait that is "future proof".
Let me explain.
Since western comics have a lot of writers, everything about a character can change except the core aspects of their identity. When those aspects are future proof, you get the closest thing to stability a character in western comic books can get.
Superman is a moral example to all and saves the world. Batman does not kill and solves misteries. Those are future proof. Those are example of future proof traits. As long as a writer follows those they can't fuck it up that badly. If someone fucks it up, they can rely on those core traits and things will improve. And when someone ignores those core traits you get Wally West in Heroes In Crisis.
A character that does not have core traits that are future proof, quickly becomes aimless because writers don't have a clue about what to do with it.
Tim Drake does not have future proof traits. If I want to be an ass I coud say he has no traits at all.
Because of that...
There is no "Tim Drake kind of story". Superman saves the world. Batman solves misteries. Damian can switch from silly child like action to dark and edgy assassin shit. Harley Quinn has batshit insane plots or can tackle abuse as a topic. Tim Drake has no story that is "his style of story". Many characters in the Bat-Family have this issue, but he has ALL the issues.
I could go on. I am sure I will find more issues to fix. But those are enough. Time to build a concept that tackles every issue I mentioned.
No superhero identity of his own. Maybe the hardest one to tackle because creating a name, a look and a concept that sticks is hard as fuck. So we leave this for last. Tim Drake leaves his Robin/Red Robin/vigilante life behind in an attempt to make a difference from the civilian side of Gotham. Allows us to tackle the rest of the issues and create a Story arc that concludes with him getting a new identity. We start with him as an aimless being that has a general desire to do good and we end up with him as a fully shaped and tempered new version of himself.
Distinct fighting Style/Weapon.
Side rant. When Jackie Chan's career started he was sold as a new version of Bruce Lee. He failed at that. There was already a serious action-star/martial-artist with perfectly polished technique.
Jackie chan realized that he needed his own thing. So he went the opposite way and focused on comedy and fighting with props in the enviroment. Instant hit. You probably never knew that jackie chan attempted to be a serious action star specialized in perfectly polished technique.
So lets not re create the wheel here. Lets give Tim a fighting style that revolves around using the enviroment as a weapon. Writers/Illustrators will always have to show what objects/details of the enviroment are present before the action starts that way there is always a game for the readers. The object/detail that will become the focus of the action scene or finishing blow was there the whole time, it was a matter if the reader was creative enough or smart enough to notice what was going to happen.
Look at that, future proofing. That way every single writer from here on knows how to write/draw a Tim Drake fight.
Hey, look at that, we created a "Tim Drake style fight". We are giving him a core trait. And that core traits relies on being observant, smart and quick witted, something he is supposed to be good at and better than every other Robin if we read the comics books right. Except that we are going to use it and show it constantly.
Hey DC comics, steal this. Please. And fire the one responsible for thinking this kind of thing. Just kidding. You don't have someone thinking this kind of thing.
Supporting cast. A supporting cast must support the story and the main character and change/gain something from interacting with him. So we are either going to create civilan suporting cast for him or take characters that are not exploited and have no significant relationship with any other members of the Bat-Family.
Villains: Creating new villains is not the point here. Gotham has enough of them. We will have to create a new way to make Tim Drake interact with them. This will help with creating a "Tim Drake kind of story"
Relationship with the Bat-Family: No full crossover. None. At most we make them cross paths one member at the time so we can compare and contrast core traits to fully develop Tim Drake as a distinct entity.
Core personality traits and making them future proof: People. He is good with people. And he solves people’s problems with his own hands or at least attempts it. Those will be his core character traits. He found out who Bruce and Dick were. Realized that Batman needed a Robin. He became Robin. It worked, it could have ended up in a masive backfire.
Sure he is smart, but everyone in the Bat-Family is smart. The distinction is how he focused on the people involved, saw an emotional problem, he tought about a solution and went and applied it with his own hands putting himself on the line.
Also, those traits are future proof and are a good point to start talking about...
"A Tim Drake kind of story" A Tim Drake kind of story must always be, or end up being about people. Their problems, an attempt to solve them and how does that attempt work or fails to work.
We are closing around an idea that as some vague shape. But before starting this project we need to talk about the elephant in the room.
Romance.
There is no elephant in the room. Romance will be ignored in this project. Romance in western comics is the place where good writing comes to die. I am already taken a gigantic unholy task. I am not Jesus. I can't raise the dead.
The end.
Soooo. One story arc to solve all this issues...
Tim Drake retires from superhero life. Why? Because he likes to solve problems at an individual level. Superhero life does not allow for that. He fixes the issue at hand, he moves to the next. Not enough interaction with the root of the issue, no real solution. If there is a real solution he does not get to it in a direct, in person manner.
There are more than enough superheroes in Gotham doing the exact same thing he was doing. It is not like the family can't call him when they think his help will make a difference.
He becomes a cop... and here comes the cancellation mob... I don't care. By making him a cop I can write him into situations that will be interesting, I can keep him close enough to the rest of the Bat-family. I can keep him close to the victims and the thugs so I can make them actual people with actual problems that Tim can try to solve by himself in a direct manner. I can keep him close to petty crime, organized crime, I can make him go into mysteries/investigations that can link him to super villains. I can explore the GCPD as an institution with every ugly and good thing... so fuck it. I am making him a cop.
Bruce slips a letter of recommendation for him to whoever has some kind of pull. Lets say Gordon. And this trusted ally puts him away from him, as a trusted person that can help him solve a case at the other side of the city (That way we keep him away from Gordon, Gordon is a Batgirl's and Batman's supporting character). Also, he is instructed to keep an aye out for corrupt officers.
The case to be solved is a mystery that will be resolved during this run and will help to create the new super hero identity that we are trying to build for Tim.
The basic of the stories that will be part of this arc would be this one.
[Tim is assigned to problem/crime] [Problem involves civilians or random thugs that work for a villain] [Civilian's/Random Thug's situation is explored to humanize the people involved in the problem/crime] [Tim tries to solve the human issue that is behind the problem/crime by being involved] [Sometimes it works, sometimes it fails, sometimes it is beyond any hope and it ends in tragedy] [At some point in the story, Tim finds new information/evidence about the ongoing case/mystery. This part will change once that mystery is solved]
I almost forgot. All good arcs/stories have a theme that ties every individual story/issue together.
The theme will be "Gotham is human. Gotham cares. Gotham's people care."
I will continue with this later on.
In case you did not notice. This is not born out of love for Tim Drake or DC. This is born out of hate for bad writing, hate for wasted potential, beer and fernet branca.
End of the intro.
This is a project my boyfriend has been working on over the last year. I supported his idea from the start and I’m going to be providing the concept art for Tim Drake on his new adult superhero identity, while my boy continues to write and develop his prototipe of character arc for Tim.
There will be updates of this project soon!

Usually I keep most of my opinions to myself but THIS? This has me LIVID. What the effin hell is THIS? I'm 100% sure the WFA team had nothing to do with this since throughout the WHOLE webtoon Tim is Red Robin so this comic reading list to introduce people to Tim Drake makes 0 sense. Robins was Seeley's wet dream of sorts and based on his writing he clearly didn't care for Tim, that much was clear. Robins was a disappointment especially for anyone who voted for that series in the round robin but I'd like to forget my regrets. TD:R tells you nothing about Tim Drake other than "now he has a boyfriend". At least add some balance like, I dont know, Tim's *actual* origin story? NOT FUCKING HARD. Damian's rec list is godawful too, imo...but I'm not a Damian fan so someone else will have to defend his honor.

Being in dc fandoms is so frustrating because on one hand you read comics and watch shows of ur faves and half the time the writers are fucking them up and being so terribly wrong, and then you go into the fandom spaces and get the exact same treatment, and sometimes it's worse bc u have to restrain urself from interacting with said fans bc arguing with ppl on the internet is pointless. It's just so hard being the only right person (that last sentence is mainly a joke lol)

I know that DCEU and DCTV never has the same actors for the same characters, with a few exceptions, but I really think Titans has the best cast, despite how dark it is :/ I really wish to see a Titans live action film. And hopefully Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson. I think he's the perfect actor. His build is just RIGHT.
I also have a lil wish to see David Mazouz return maybe as a batkid? But I definitely love to see him back in DCU somehow.
And Blue Beetle? Im definitely looking forward to it. XOLO FOR THE WINNNN. Honestly excited to see Jaime Reyes on screen and his origin.
Matt Ryan? He's the perfect John Constantine. I respect Keanu Reeves Constantine but Matt Ryan's portrayal is much more comic accurate.
James Gunn entry into the DCEU definitely shook things up. I do hope a few casts stay as they are, but if they're gonna recast, then I hope its for the better!
Its sad to see a few legendary tv shows get cancelled too like Stargirl and Legends of Tomorrow. Psst, AND Constantine. I hope some of these hidden gems gets renewed.
I hope Batgirl isn't all gone now too. I hope they bring it back! I wanna see ittttt!

So I went hiatus and took a break from reading DC for awhile, and the new movie (Battle of the Super Sons) got my gears, nostalgia, and enthusiasm back so I went and picked up where I left from my reading list...and oh...like oh wow...reading the comics is making me realize why I took a healthy dose of break from canon DC
I need to stay in fanon DC for while to destress phew huhuhuhu

You know, when batman is an asshole to the rogues when they aren't doing anything wrong-- it really shifts in tone when you start to think about it from an external view.
Just imagine being a doctor and this guy in an animal costume comes in and starts threatening your already incarcerated patients for no reason-- like, excuse me?
We're made to side with this maniac with his biased verdict and just-- forgive him when he's wrong? Dude, no.
Batman: there's a vile chemical on the streets of Gotham targeting teenagers!! It must be joker... or scarecrow!
He goes and he beats them both up for no reason: because we all know torture is the best form of interrogation! *cough cough* (I'm gonna get assassinated by the CIA)
Then surprise it was this random chemistry teacher named Jack pumping out energy drinks via a super questionable pharmaceuticals company.
We can't just be like, "But Batman got the bad guy in the end!" Dude, he literally out here breaking bones as collateral damage following leads that literally did not exist.
Can we have a batman that is an actual detective? Or are we going to have a batman that continues to just give a guilty verdict before he has all the facts down? We get A LOT of those, and it really muddies the perspective of what makes a good detective.
For a company called DETECTIVE COMICS, Y'ALL SUCK AT WRITING DETECTIVES.

hc that no one on the JL (or any of the teams) will let bats do the heavy lifting, ever
Like one day they need to carry an unconscious Flash after a battle and someone else (who has a broken arm) is like “who is well enough that they can carry him” and Batman, ceo of ignoring his injuries™️, is like “I got this” but his mouth starts leaking blood while he’s carrying flash. Superman (who was holding up a building) x-rays him & is like “YOU HAVE THREE BROKEN RIBS AND INTERNAL BLEEDING. WHY ARE YOU CARRYING FLASH?” “…I am well enough to carry flash”
anyway this applies to all bats. Someone asks if someone else can volunteer to help them lift something and, no matter what, Kon puts his hand over Tim’s mouth bc of the broken leg incident™️. Tim will never even be allowed a chance to make a case or attempt to answer the call.
Someone asks if Robin can help to carry something and Jon immediately replies “no he can’t. I’ll do it tho.” bc Damian once tried to conduct cleanup (lifting pieces of broken buildings and concrete) post alien-invasion with a stab wound (it was multiple stab wounds but only Jon figured that out)
Someone asks nightwing if he can carry stuff to the car and all of a sudden you have eight people shouting “NO” bc he once offered to carry someone’s old 60 pound box TV to storage while he had a gunshot wound. They only learned about the gunshot wound after he fainted & the tv fell on top of him.
Jason leaves before anyone can ask him to help with anything
Edit:
Steph and Cass fight over who carries the thing for the other person, but usually neither of them volunteer. They're gone the second the battle is over. Babs never has to carry shit even if it's a loaf of bread because she goes "wow, really? have the wheelchair bound girl carry shit for you, sure" so the person stammers and she gets away with it every single time.
Duke is allowed to carry things. (Other teams have yet to find out about his injuries.) In fact, they compliment him on being responsible enough to not over-exert himself. He smiles back. (He's trying not to laugh.)

I feel like Jason todd being a "brick" or super bulky is only half true. I feel like he definitely has more muscle than anyone else (except Bruce), but he has to still be somewhat light to do some of the tricks he does. Like Dick is obviously skinnier because he's more acrobatic and agile than strong and I've always kind of headcannoned that Tim is just one of those people who struggles to gain weight or muscle. So yeah, Jason is going to have more muscle than them. But, I feel like, and correct me if I'm wrong, but too much extra muscle or weight would slow him down and make it harder to do some of the stuff he's done. Like, he's an agile dude. Like some of the stunts he does in Under the Red hood :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And he seems to be light enough on his feet to sneak up on people:
Tumblr media
I know there's other examples but that requires some digging I don't have time for at the moment.
I'm still not entirely sure where DC writers got it in their heads that Jason was the bulky stupid one, but it gives me classist vibes tbh. I mean, even through the entirety of under the red hood, he was sneaky, cunning, clever, etc. Anyway, that's a little off topic. I'm trying to say that Jason has more muscle than the majority of the batfam but not a bodybuilder Brickhouse block kind of dude.
