house md is in a way extremely groundbreaking and no show has gotten even close to what it managed to do. house is a disabled character who stays disabled for the whole series and yes he is a flawed and damaged person and his bad actions are in line with his character and dealing with chronic pain. he changes even though he is adamant for the whole show that people don’t change. house becomes self sacrificing and learns to love in his own flawed way. he goes to therapy and seeks help and support and he is 100% not the same person he started out the series as. there are canon queer characters that aren’t only treated as jokes and have actual three dimensional character arcs. there are unhealthy relationships and healthy relationships. there is loss but it’s not treated as shock value. actions have consequences. characters stay and go. house md is just as real as it is outlandish at times. it skirts the line with absurdity and realism. it’s beautiful and tragic and at it’s core it is a story of love and becoming a better person despite your trauma and flaws. it doesn’t treat house’s trauma and disability as an excuse for his actions but it’s why he is who he is. and despite all of this, house is happy at the end of the show even though the one person he truly loves, his male best friend, is dying. they could have gone the conventional route and gave wilson a female love interest who is actually good for him at the end of the show and yet they choose to have him run away to spend his final days alive with house. and this show ended before gay marriage was legalized. oh my god.

The more time I sink into andromeda, the more I suspect the biggest reason it ultimately failed commercially was because of the massive tonal shift I've already mentioned, and how there was probably a pretty big chunk of original trilogy players who simply no longer fit as a demographic, while the game failed to reach the people who might’ve enjoyed it.

The original trilogy, much as I love it, feels a little bit like a wishfulfillment power fantasy for a very obvious demographic. Almost all women are overtly sexy in design and the f/f relationship in the first game seems to be written along the guidelines of 'what would a straight man find hot'; you play as someone cool and confident and powerful, the most specialest human ever, and maybe you aren’t always respected but YOU and the NARRATIVE always know you're right and you get to be rude to and sometimes punch/murder people who disagree with you so it’s fine. The game then salvages all this by means of genuinely well-written characters and arcs, really cool sci-fi tech and lore, a fantastic story, and meaningful and hard-hitting choices and consequences (which also allow and often encourage you to steer away from that exact macho ideal).

Enter andromeda. Instead of being a super powerful supersoldier from the start, you're the kid of one. You barely know what you're doing. Everyone doubts you, including yourself. You don’t get the assuredness of knowing you are Right and Cool that you have as Shepard. You don’t demand that same respect. And I'm sure there are a lot of people who hated that.

actually you know i bitch about shb!thancred a lot and how his whole arc in the expac (as well as in post-hw let’s be real) reduces minfilia to haunting the narrative and also he doesn’t always treat ryne great, BUT,

i would be lying if i didn’t say that his relationship with ryne makes me uh, fucking cry. the fact that his first instinct when he hears that she exists and that she is being locked away and abused by a theocratic dictatorship with the largest military in the world is to go free her as soon as possible no matter the cost makes me cry. the fact that even with all his butthurt and trauma and his flaws he has the presence of mind to eke out some semblance of family with her and urianger makes me cry. the fact that he teaches her how to defend herself first makes me cry. the fact that despite everything he fucking pulls his head out of his ass and learns to relate to her as a real father and child instead of a standin for someone he misses makes me cry. the fact that despite everything ryne keeps him in her life and in her heart makes me cry. thanks for coming to my ted talk

thinking about sam and mary. the parallels between young mary and sam, both desperate to escape from their families and hunting towards a 'normal' life (neither of them escape in the end). their respective partners, intended as a way out, end up reenacting a history of violence running through their family tree. jess dies like sam's mother, pinned to the ceiling in flames. john becomes samuel in mary's absence - the very hunter patriarch mary was running from. sam named after samuel her father - the same father who kisses her while possessed by a demon. a kiss that comes to fruition when said demon feeds his blood to a baby sam at the crib; a violation she 'allowed' for, that she is unable to stop, that destroys her in the end. azazel as the ghost of incest and csa haunting the campbell family line. when sam gets resurrected without a soul, it's grandpa he partners and hunts with (what is the price of a grandson, but an expendable cost in service of protecting a daughter you've failed?)

mary as the ghost haunting sam's family, the absence eating away at his brother and father. sam as the ghost of mary's destruction; she haunts her husband and other son through him. sam as a site of formative trauma for both john and dean, the catalyst for another cycle of patriarchal violence; from john to dean, from dean to sam. by protecting him, they revisit that trauma in circles. they can't save her, but they can protect sam. sam feels dirtywrong, long before he learns of his blood, because what is a ghost if not an evil to be hunted, trauma to be exorcised by flame?

the demon blood from mary's deal as sam's unbreakable cage. her blood curse forever marking him as abnormal, as prey to both hunters and demons alike.

she asks him, after her resurrection, didn't you get out? when he tells her - my family hunts, it's what we do - she grieves for him, for herself. mary is the question to which sam is the answer.

Ah! sorry! I saw this message a few days ago but I didn't have any pictures or time to pin it back up on my dress form, but here she is now!!

I am very new to sewing so I am incredibly intimidated by this project!! But it has been so fun to work on

and if anyone is wondering why I chose certain things/styles, I'll put more under the cut so I don't bog anyone's dash down, haha

I’m using a 1910s wedding dress pattern, which has been a fun challenge, as the pattern is partially in French and the instructions basically just amount to “put it together.” And the sizing is for someone a lot smaller than me. Also, I’m altering the pattern to better fit my vision lol

I’ve been seeing a lot of fun analysis on trying to figure out when the book takes place, and I’m not quite sure where I stand on that, but I have been making this dress with the idea that the fashion setting is somewhere between 1909 and 1914. Regardless of whether it’s pre or post WWI, the fashion in Deerwood seems to me (based on some online research, I am not a fashion historian) to be set around that time, with the older members of the family dressing even older and Olive wearing her hair in what sounds like a Chignon style that was popular in the 1910s, “pulled low on her forehead, with puffs above the ears.”

So either fashion in Deerwood is real behind and/or there’s some anachronistic factors (e.g. the cars). Either way, I feel like this pattern is really fun to use because both this pattern and younger Valancy’s imaginings of a future wedding dress prominently feature orange blossoms. And even tho the version I’m creating doesn’t have that, I just think it’s a neat connection.

I shortened the sleeves to have a less Victorian vibe and the skirt is a bit of a different shape and obviously not as long. I’m also using some homemade lace I found at a thrift store instead of the orange blossom trimming so that is a fun touch. Not sure if I'll leave the waist bare or add some more thrifted homemade lace tho

But yeah! I'd love to hear what anyone thinks! I am very new to sewing tho, so apologies if I blind anyone with my bad techniques!

This is the first time I've ever expressed desire to read any specific fan-based content relating to ORV but I've a dire need for a KDJ cringefail single parenting shenanigans so bad and I say that knowing full well he isn’t the sole adult LGY and SYS rely upon. It would just make things funnier to be honest. Communal parenting can't save him I need to my guy pulling absolutely ass child-rearing techniques that nobody on earth has ever dreamed of has ever conceived of and the other Kimcom members off to the side going "congrats buddy that's the worst anybody's ever done it."

@thefalse first of all, there's more to meat/dairy consumption than "it tastes good". There are health issues that necessitate eating meat and animal products, and they provide vital vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Your body will specifically even give you cravings for food high in these nutrients when you're in need. Secondly humans are omnivores, our healthiest diets consist of meat AND plant. Livestock also consumes a huge percentage of food waste that humans, including vegans, can't or won't eat. This can be "ugly" food, food too close to expiration, food you can't keep overnight like baked goods. 30% of the diet of that pork chop that I had last Tuesday was food people threw away. Only 36% of food (by calorie) grown globally is eaten by livestock, 55% makes it onto the plate of a human. 9% goes to biofuels.

If you're as worried about resource scarcity as you claim maybe start trying for renewable resources??? The problem isn't "oh wow animals are so bad for the environment", the problem is "companies and corporations are doing bad things for more money and they're only getting worse." You can stop eating milk and honey all you want, but that's not doing literally anything towards what you claim to be advocating for. We can develop new ways to farm that are sustainable and renewable but we can't unfuck the environment with a simple "just don't buy meat lol". It's infinitely more complex than that.

Did you know it's illegal to harvest seeds you got from a tomato at your local Walmart and cultivate them for yourself? That is assuming the plant hasn't been rendered sterile to enforce reliance on whatever company sells the seeds. I personally think that's a bit more fucked up than having a grilled cheese every so often.

Also no one is arguing animal abuse is good, but it's pretty common knowledge that if you abuse your livestock, it reflects negatively in the product. Put simply: animals that are abused then slaughtered for meat make shitty meat. Is there some sketchy shit happening in factory farming? Abso-fucking-lutely. Many livestock animals live on the bare minimum. I absolutely think that livestock should have good lives. Obviously not every cow and pig and chicken can be raised with the same quality of life as a champion show poodle, but they absolutely deserve a nice pasture and good scratch and a warm, comfortable shelter.

You know who provides these things? Local farmers or even just hobbyists. I have several family friends that raise chickens, and we get more eggs than we could ever hope to reasonably eat as a family of four. If you don't eat the egg, toss it back to the chicken! She will happily eat her eggs because they're nutritional and make a damn fine meal. My family also has connections to a family owned cattle farm, and we split a cow up the middle every year, and did for almost 20 years before the owner got cancer and stopped selling beef to focus on his health, and it was damn good beef too. Pigs aren't prominent in my area, but I'm sure I could find one semi-locally. My DM keeps bees and my family went from basically never using honey to buying it by the pint. I think the only thing that my family buys from the store that we couldn't get anywhere else is milk and cheese because pasteurization and cheese making is a huge expensive process that isn't really reasonable to maintain for just a small family.

Ultimately the argument of "but animal abuse" boils down to factory farming, but the solution then becomes just don't buy meat and other products from factory farms.
