St Mary Mead, part 4
Or maybe I should find a more exciting title, like “the modern side”? Well, as modern as can be in rural England post war, that is.
The most unabashedly modern house in the village is this one:
It’s supposed to be called Chatsworth, but is known in the village as “the period piece” or “Mr Booker new house”.
It’s certainly of it’s time!
This (small) monument to art deco houses actress Dinah Lee and her former secret husband, Basil Blake, who has two claims to fame in the village: One for having been an adorable baby, in the words of Dolly Bantry... And the second for being a suspect in this corpse in the Library business.
In St Mary Mead, that poses a man.
Next door, we have a much more tame house:
Home of the local photographer, who came to the country for some calm after the war... Poor man didn’t foresee he would be asked to photograph just as many corpses as weddings, but then how could he?
Next door is the Charming house, where solicitor Lionel Charming lives with his mother... He’d LOVE to get married one day, but so far, prospective brides haven’t been very taken by the putative mother in law... And vice versa!
On the other side of the village, we Mr Gimp garage:
The Gimp have always been the village smiths, and they adapted to the times by becoming the village mechanics.
Next door, the village carpenter:
Nice modern brick house and extensive workshop.
Alas, not the most reliable artisan, very likely to turn a sculpted Llama when you ordered a chair, which is a bother, considering Llamas are not comfy to sit on...
And last but not least in modern times, the “Development”:
This former cow field was turned to housing after the war. It has nine identical houses...
And, at the entrance, a playground for young kids:
It’s not as the old guard was overjoyed by this sudden intrusion in their closed world, but, well, one has to go with the times, and the local enterprises need workers.
To finish this bit, view of this part of the village:
Next, a bit of grime and soot and factories!
