Co-founders of blockchain gaming platform Gala Games have engaged in a legal battle over two separate lawsuits filed in the court. One of the co-founders alleged the theft of $130 million worth of Gala tokens, while the other alleged corporate waste.
Last Thursday, August 31, Gala Games co-founders Eric Schiermeyer and Wright Thurston filed lawsuits against each other in the Utah District Court. On behalf of Gala Games, its CEO Schiermeyer has accused Thurston and his investment firm, True North United Investments, of embezzling approximately $130 million worth of GALA tokens linked to the Gala Games ecosystem in early 2021.
According to Schiermeyer’s lawsuit, the GALA tokens initially moved to a wallet under Gala Games’ control were subsequently transferred to 43 different wallets by Thurston. When questioned about these transfers, Thurston claimed he was safeguarding the tokens for Gala.
However, between September 2022 and May 2023, Thurston allegedly engaged in a series of intricate transactions involving the GALA tokens, eventually exchanging or selling them. The lawsuit alleges these transactions were intentionally convoluted.
Thurston initially denied any knowledge of the token sales but later asserted that the sold GALA tokens were his, a claim refuted by Schiermeyer’s lawsuit. Allegedly, Thurston also sold licenses to run Gala ecosystem nodes, which can earn GALA tokens. He later sold these licenses and kept the proceeds.
Using GALA Tokens for Personal Purchases
True North, under Thurston’s leadership, filed a lawsuit against Schiermeyer, representing Gala Games. The lawsuit accuses him of causing Gala to squander millions of dollars in company assets and borrowing millions of Gala’s funds for personal expenses.
According to the lawsuit, Schiermeyer allegedly established Gala entities in Switzerland and Dubai, positioning himself as the dominant shareholder to pursue business opportunities, all without Thurston’s input, who is a director at Gala. Furthermore, True North asserts that Schiermeyer repeatedly provided incomplete or inaccurate information and corporate records to Thurston despite numerous requests for transparency.
Schiermeyer’s lawsuit seeks Thurston’s removal as a Gala director and demands various forms of relief and damages, including the return of the allegedly misappropriated GALA tokens.
In a parallel legal action, Thurston called for Schiermeyer’s removal from Gala and requested over $750 million in damages and relief.
It’s worth noting that in March, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued Thurston, True North, and another firm he founded, Green United, for their involvement in an allegedly fraudulent cryptocurrency mining scheme.
Efforts to obtain comments from lawyers representing Schiermeyer and Thurston have thus far been unsuccessful.

Monkeypox: India's Second Case Confirmed In Kerala's Kannur
A 31-year-old man from Kannur in Kerala tested positive for monkeypox on Monday, making it the second confirmed case of the disease in India, a Union health ministry official said.
The patient had landed at the Mangalore airport in coastal Karnataka from Dubai on July 13. He was admitted to a hospital after he exhibited symptoms of the disease. His samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, and they tested positive for the virus, the official said.
The Union health ministry had last week rushed a high-level multi-disciplinary team to Kerala to assist the state health authorities in instituting public health measures after the first confirmed case of monkeypox was detected from Kollam district on Thursday.
"In view of the report of confirmation of a case of monkeypox disease from Kollam district in Kerala, the health ministry has decided to depute a multi-disciplinary central team to support the state government of Kerala in investigating the outbreak and institute requisite public health measures," an official memorandum by the health ministry last week read.
The team shall work closely with the state health departments and take stock of the on-ground situation and recommend necessary public health interventions, the officials had said.
"The Government of India is taking proactive steps by monitoring the situation carefully and coordinating with states in case of any such possibility of outbreak," the health ministry had earlier said.
According to the World Health Organisation, monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals), with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe.
With the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, monkeypox has emerged as the most important orthopoxvirus for public health.

In an escalating internal conflict, co-founders of blockchain gaming platform Gala Games, Eric Schiermeyer and Wright Thurston, have filed dueling lawsuits against each other. Both suits were filed on Aug. 31 in a Utah District Court, each alleging serious misconduct by the other.
Schiermeyer, who is also the CEO of Gala Games, filed a lawsuit accusing Thurston and his Investment firm, True North United Investments, of stealing approximately $130 million in GALA tokens, which are integral to the Gala Games ecosystem, which itself is one of the stalwarts in blockchain gaming as a sector.
The suit claims that the tokens were initially moved to a company-controlled wallet but were subsequently shifted into 43 other wallets by Thurston. Schiermeyer alleges that these tokens were then sold or exchanged through a "complex web of obfuscatory transactions" between September 2022 and May 2023.
Thurston, who initially claimed to be securely holding the tokens for Gala, later argued that the sold tokens were his own—a claim that Schiermeyer's lawsuit refutes. Notably, Thurston is accused of appropriating licenses to operate nodes in the Gala ecosystem, licernses which can earn GALA tokens. According to the suit, Thurston sold these licenses and retained the proceeds.
On the same day, a lawsuit was filed by Thurston's Investment firm True North, accusing Schiermeyer of wasting millions in compafny assets and funneling company funds for personal use.
The lawsuit alleges that Schiermeyer created Gala subsidiaries in Switzerland and Dubai, making himself the controlling shareholder to pursue business opportunities without Thurston’s input. The suit also claims that Schiermeyer provided incomplete or incorrect corporate records to Thurston "despite repeated requests."
Both lawsuits are seeking the removal of the other as a Gala director and are claiming various forms of relief and damages. Schiermeyer's suit seeks the return of the allegedly stolen GALA tokens, while Thurston's lawsuit is demanding at least $750 million in various damages and relief.
This legal turmoil follows an earlier lawsuit in March, in which the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued Thurston, True North, and another company he founded, Green United, for allegedly selling investments in a fraudulent Crypto mining scheme. The lawsuits raise critical questions about the firm's governance and Financial management at Gala Games, as both co-founders are now embroiled in allegations that, if and once proven, could have severe implications for the future of the company.
