it’s so funny the difference between how Matthew Mercer handles crosstalk and how Brennan does
Brennan jumps in the weeds with whatever nonsensical bullshit Emily and Lou are throwing at him that moment and then pivots it on a dime back to the actual game
matthew’s running a Story. there’s a time and place and he delineates that very clearly and the players still have fun bc he lets there be space for it without having to then wrench it back to the task at hand
personally i think this is brennan’s improv background contrasted with Matthew’s more traditional VA work background and it’s real interesting
both ways of doing things are great it’s just cool seeing the differences

For those of you who have experience with DnD and have read Wings of Fire-
What would be a good way to incorporate animus magic?
One of my players in my underwater campaign wants to have animus magic, and I just think it's a bit OP without actually drastic consequences.
Currently my idea is a list of 10-20 consequences that happen when it is used, and it may only be used once upon leveling up between levels 2-5, twice 6-10, and three times 11+
(Consequences would be per usage but only more extreme towards the higher levels (7+) ) (Also dictated on what it is used for)
(examples of the consequences:
Perpetual disadvantage on insight checks (or other checks)
lose 2-5 permanent hit points (so a person who has 14 permanent hit points could get knocked down to 9-12)
sudden loss of digits (such as fingers, toes, etc)
docking a stat down (so a +1 becomes +0, a -1 becomes -2, etc)
Temporary blindness
Even if they roll high on perception or insight checks, there will always be one wrong detail. Whether that is the color of the rock or the lack or existence of an item. More minute details preferably.
losing a damage point on a certain attack (so like, a dragonborn with their breath weapon, one that would be 2d4 damage would be 2d4 - 1 , etc )
suddenly a certain type of creature is always hostile. Could be birds, could be snakes, could be a species of fish.
Do you think this is a good idea-? or should I just kinda nix it entirely?

Got any tips for running a game in Detroit??
Well, my co-storyteller is from the Midwest and has actually been there, so he helped me a lot with history and writing an essay for myself and the players from his point of view to help set a tone. If you don't have a best friend from the Midwest, I'd suggest you do some research! Start with the Wiki and if you can, expand from there (for example, I watched some videos of people walking around the city to get a feel, listened to an audiobook and a few other things) On my side of things, I like to get a feel of the subculture of a region as I tend to have more punk rather than mainstream stories so I learned about the music and venues from Detroit at the time which was fascinating, from punk, to rap to techno (and now I know way too much about ICP ) I also rewatched the Crow which was set in a very stylized version of Detroit which helped inspire me to craft a visual for our setting (I always set my games in somewhat distinct AU's of places as allows for some discrepeinces without breaking immersion too much) Detroit is a super interesting and incredibly misunderstood city and could use more and better explorations in fiction and beyond :3 Ur, anyhow. I have recently started Dming, and this is what happened in one of the one shots I made the gods Hírtae and Rayta are made up, their names being backwards and somewhat switched around,
With the one shot two players showed up, so I introduced an NPC named Zymoria—a dark elf Warlock with Hírtae as his earthy patron, the very god the party seeks to prevent cultists from raising. Heading to the nearest cult hideout, they encountered a bridge by a lake, wisely opting for the bridge (I added a twist with a lurking Leviathan in the lake). As they reached the bridge's midpoint, a shocking revelation unfolded—the entire structure was a mimic, prompting them to battle and overcome it.
Continuing their quest, they reached the cultists' meeting spot, patiently waiting until nighttime. As darkness fell, Zymoria, propelled out of a tree by magical forces, disclosed his rejection by his patron and revealed his new identity as a Warlock Cleric multiclass. When the cultists finally convened, the party was ambushed, uncovering Zymoria's betrayal. Despite the odds, they emerged victorious, aided by the timely intervention of Rayta, the water goddess, who healed their wounds.

I kinda want to make a ttrpg setting with no bbeg in the style of something like Outer Wilds, where there’s some large looming mystery that the players have to gradually gather evidence to solve rather than a villain to beat, but I feel like I’m struggling to make it engaging without some kind of antagonist
Like my initial idea was to have a setting where the party would be investigating an ancient magical disaster with repercussions causing problems in the present, but then what do I do with that cause stringing along my players for several sessions and feeding them tiny bites of information about the disaster along the way would get really boring really fast
I see two ways I could address this, I could sprinkle in enough large revelations to keep the party interested, but that still makes the pace more repetitive than I’d like. Alternatively I could keep things interesting with minor villain B-plots, but then I have to balance those against the main story, and if the main story is progressing in a slow and fragmented way then Bilgof the Bandit who wants to get revenge on the town that exiled him becomes way more interesting than the actual story
Alas an Outer Wilds style campaign may just not be practical :/
