Opening Words - Sasaki Haise
It's happening, it's finally happening. Kaneki had woken up this morning, only to find something was off. He glances down at his wrist, as he does everyday, hoping to see words etched on. However, after a continuous string of disappointment, words finally appeared. He stares in awe at it. The handwriting isn't all that elegant, but he feels too much delight to even care. He reads the words written on his pale skin with glee: "The next person that asks me for an autograph is getting a pen up their ass." Maybe his soulmate was having a bad day? He laughs nervously. This person sounds like they would be intimidating. He doesn't do all that well around intimidating people. But, if the universe or whatever power declares them his soulmate, who is he to say no? The dark-haired boy shakes his head. He should try his best to not worry over this. After all, the entire soulmate ordeal has been drowning his senses for years. He gets ready for the morning, and as usual, heads to Kamii for college. "Really? You got yours? And before me?" The whining tone in Hide's voice doesn't go unnoticed, although Kaneki can't tell how geniuine it is. "It's not that big of a deal, Hide." Kaneki tries to calm him down, with a soft smile. His own words weren't that true -- considering Kaneki was worrying over being alone forever. But now, he feels most of his qualms at ease. "That's easy for you to say," Hide grumbles while leaning back in his chair. "Looks like I'm going to be the cat friend. While you're off getting married to them, I'll be cleaning cat litter." "Then don't buy any cats...?" "Do I need to define what a joke is to you?" Hide laughs lightheartedly, a grin on his face. "Look, man, I'm happy for you. But don't you think you've been to enraptured with this soulmate thing? You look exhausted." Hide contemplates. Kaneki gnaws on his lip, it appears Hide is perceptive as ever. It's true, there are bags under his eyes, and his skin is paler than usual. Hide takes a sip of his drink, "Now, focus on taking care of yourself for now." How could he do that? If only he was had a go-with-the-flow personality like Hide. Kaneki stares down at his coffee, the warm hazel-colored drink not bringing him much solace. He rubs his thumb over the rim, and with his other hand, he touches his chin. "I will." Everything has gone to absolute hell. Kaneki stares longingly at humans mingling, eating food with one another, and laughing. He realizes now that he took advantage of all that he had. It gets even worse when he sees couples passing by. It reminds him of a thought that's been in the back of his mind: Soulmates. He didn't care to think about it often anymore. He was too busy accepting and hiding his life as a ghoul. In fact, it was soulmates that brought this devastation upon him. Kaneki realizes that lamenting back to his previous choices won't get him anymore. He's tried it plenty of times, staying awake at night, listening to the unnerving ticking of a clock. Kaneki should've realized it sooner. The fact that Rize didn't repeat those words to him, the fact that she wasn't his soulmate. He was too engulfed by her beauty and charm to realize that he was a sitting duck. Maybe this was the world's way of punishing him for his lack of patience. All Kaneki ever wished for was happiness, but now, he begs to live another day. There's a sudden gush of loud cries hovering in the air, that immediately snaps Kaneki out of his disillusioned state. Most of the cries belong to what he guesses are females. He doesn't understand why they're screaming -- and he doesn't pay much attention to it. He continues walking his way. That is, until a blurry figure runs into him, their weight knocking Kaneki down. Inelegantly, they both flop onto the ground. Kaneki looks at their features, only to briefly note this person is attractive. Not a second later, they're glaring behind him. "The next person that asks me for an autograph is getting a pen up their ass," they murmur, while getting up. Kaneki gapes at this person like a fish. Their eloquent words repeat like a broken record in his mind, before he has an epiphany. This person is his soulmate. Kaneki's mouth is dry as they get up, and dust themselves up. They glance over at Kaneki, looking mildly apologetic. "Oh, sorry," they say. "I was being chased by a shit-ton of obnoxious fans. One of them asked my to sign their ass, like, the hell is up with that? Why would you ask that? People are dumb." Kaneki laughs, albeit uncomfortably. He did just meet his soulmate after all, and they weren't reacting to him. Oh, wait, that's because I haven't said anything!' Kaneki would've smacked his forehead if it weren't for the fact they were about to run away. "Don't leave yet, please!" Kaneki's breath is stuck in his throat while they stare at them, their eyes going wait. "Hey, what did you just say to me?" Kaneki gulps as they tower over him. He stutters incoherently, unsure of what to say next. Did he screw up? What if they were his soulmate, but he wasn't there soulmate? He should've thought more carefully and- "Cause it's uncanny how it matches the words on my wrist. Here, show me yours," Without asking for his consent, they pull him up, and stare at his wrist. He decides to stay silent for the time being. "I don't think many people besides myself would say that," they decide after looking at his wrist. "Uh, hello, I'm Ken Kaneki." "[Last] [First]. Sorta weird how this soulmate stuff words, right Ken? Should we suck face now or something?" Kaneki feels heat creeping onto his entire face. "I'm not sure, this is new to me as well," he says while scratching the back of his neck. "Uh, how about a date first?" [First] ponders for a moment, "Sure. Might as well. It's not everyday you meet your soulmate. Plus, you're cute." Kaneki murmurs a small phrase of gratitude. He can't tell if they're lying or not. A few thoughts pass through his mind, and he contemplates whether or not this is a good idea. The possibility of finding his soulmate within the mess he's in sounds so surreal. Suddenly, a hand makes contact with his shoulder, making him flinch. He stares at the bright, grinning face of [First], "Friday, eight at night this week. Meet me at this nice café called Anteiku." Relief floods his face. At least they're going somewhere he knows. "A-alright," he responds. "See you there, [Last]-san." "Back at ya, Ken." They lean in to peck his cheek. He lets out an inaudible noise, but smiles nonetheless. "Next time it'll be on the lips." And just like that, they dash out of his sight. Kaneki presses a hand to his chest, feeling his heart that was beating erratically. "I look forward to that."
