i feel the need to remind everyone that Damen’s literally one of the smartest and most well-educated characters in the series. He’s extremely well-read and knowledgeable about military tactics and strategy, which if you didn’t know also includes a huge depth of history knowledge, and his talent comes from both education and years of experience. He’s smart enough to know geography and terrain information of an area he hasn’t needed to have information on in seven years, and even then, the lands they are talking about were in mainland Vere, not Delpha, so his studies were his own initiative. he has favorite poems! HE ENJOYED DEBATING OBSCURE PHILOSOPHY WITH HESTON!!! like y’all Damen is just as intelligent as Laurent, it’s just that Laurent’s intelligence is about manipulation and chess and Damen’s just a nerd.

(also people are gonna be coming for me for this one but i think Damen likes books and libraries a lot more than Laurent ever did)

you know what i love most about damen and laurent? they're both difficult characters. they're both stubborn and proud and angry and hurt and resourceful and intelligent and soft and tough and scheming and capable and on paper they might not be the best match for each other at first, but they got to know each other more intimately than anyone has ever known them, they both managed to see beyond the prejudice that tainted their perception of each other in the beginning, and they've both learned to trust and communicate. and, most importantly, they've never once asked one another to change even an aspect of their personality, complex and difficult and headstrong as they may be.

I've read several posts about how Damen and Laurent's problems are basically nothing compared to what the dark rise characters go through and how they wouldn't last a minute in that world, but that's not the point I want to make, because you know who would fucking thrive in dark rise?? Y'all - your favorite character wouldn't even BE lovable without Damen!

All that captivating complexity would have been lost if Damen hadn't stepped up and nurtured Laurent's better side. Laurent was losing himself by the first book and it took someone with a superhuman amount of love to redeem him. I get that Laurent is your favorite - his core integrity softens that surface wit and mischievousness, he's great. But we would never have fallen in love with Laurent if Damen hadn't done it first. The first time you ever connected with him was through Damen's kind eyes. His point of view is the heart of this story, and that gentle attention and faith brings Laurent back to life. There would be no favorite character without Damen because he constructed that man.

That's why I'm irritated when people are enamored with Laurent but underestimate Damen. They neglect to appreciate the character that coaxed out their lovable favorite in the first place. It takes an emotional genius to accomplish what Damen did and we all should acknowledge it more.
