5-ish Things I Adore (End of 2022/Early 2023 Edition)

I used to do these things all the time, but fell out of the habit! So this post is mostly for me, but I hope you enjoy too, internet.

01. What’s on TV

I am notoriously behind trend on TV shows; my friends are constantly asking me if I’ve seen their favorite show of the moment, and my answer is almost always ‘no’. Sorry that I decided to rewatch the entire run of Scrubs instead of watching White Lotus, but it is what it is.

I’m catching up now though! And YES, Severance is just as incredible as everyone says it is.

Honorable mention goes to Wednesday for just being fun.

02. At the movies

Hands down my favorite film of 2022 was Everything Everywhere All at Once. I don’t think I have ever had a film experience like it. Truly a masterpiece of a film. I would die for Michelle Yeoh.

Honorable mention to Glass Onion which is so much fucking fun! I would also die for Janelle Monáe.

03. In this world

I was lucky enough to travel to a few places in 2022, but absolutely fell in love with Oaxaca, Mexico. What a magical place. I am dying to go back!

Honorable mention goes to, of all places, Tacoma, Washington! It’s so charming and no longer smells terrible!

04. Culture Trip

I gratefully live in a major city with tons of museums, and hands down the best exhibition I saw in the last 12 months was Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy at the Legion of Honor. Truly breathtaking, and the way the museum integrated many of her works into their permanent exhibits was fantastic.

Honorable mention goes to Hella Feminist at Oakland Museum of California, which I may have enjoyed more had it not been so overwhelmingly crowded when I saw it.

05. On the shelf

My most unexpected favorite of this year was a phenomenal book of poetry titled new names for lost things by Noor Unnahar. Like many people, I walk around most days filled up with grief that I don’t know how to articulate, so these poems are a treasure to find. I revisit them often.

Happy threeloween epithet erased fans, and today for the spookiest day of the year (November 1st) I went and created more madness! like always @tearah04 supplied the design. The theme of this outfit was "what if navens otherworld form was more over the top"

The outside of the outfit (the white and gold) is completely hand embroidered! The outfit took approximately 140 hours to make!

A vast majority of the time went into the embroidery. Ive always found hand embroidery much more expressive than machine embroidery. After visiting the Guo Pei exhibit in San Francisco I was inspired to finally make an outfit that focused on embroidery. For a character like naven that personal touch felt necessary. For this outfit I tried a specific form of embroidery called goldwork. As the name implies gold threads are used but unlike many other styles there Is a focus on different sizes of thread. I also dyed the lining rainbow and added the pearls to really make the outfit pop.

Who is, in your opinion, the best clothing designer ever to walk this planet? Also, what's your favorite ensemble by them?

Literally an impossible question to answer oh no!! Like any art form, fashion is a series of overlapping waves, each affecting the shape of the other. It’s like picking the greatest painter in history—does Van Gogh’s use of color and impasto get him the top spot? Or Raphael’s classical grace and intelligent composition? Or Hokusai’s use of line? Same in fashion: Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, all irrevocably altered couture. And that’s just in France in the early to mid-twentieth century, and it’s only taking their influence into account, not any particular skill or style. A designer can be great in some areas and not in others. Are we ranking on innovation, wearability, silhouette, color, accessibility,

So it’s a hard question to answer. Currently, the designer I get the most excited about is Guo Pei. She goes precisely as over the top as I like: turning fashion into theater (more so than normal, I mean)

But I also looooove Daniel Roseberry over at Schiaparelli; I think he’s doing fantastic things not just with the house’s legacy but also in general. And the first thing I think of for “favorite Roseberry” is Natasha Poonawalla’s ensemble for the 2022 Met Gala

The Unpassing by Chia-Chia Lin
