Episode 778: COMPASS's Walker & Mackenzie
To paraphrase a marketing line from the 80's - adventure has a new name, and that name is Shahidah El-Amin. The lead character in the recent Image Comics mini-series Compass, Shahidah is a 13th Century scholar from Baghdad's House of Wisdom who has traveled to the British Isles to investigate claims of a tribe that has found the secret to eternal life. Along the way to discovering the truth, Shahidah encounters different mysteries, cultures, surprises, allies, enemies, and those who would be both. Now collected in trade paperback as Compass: The Cauldron of Eternal Life, the series was drawn by Justin Greenwood, colored by Daniela Miwa, lettered by Simon Bowland, and written by our guests today: the Australian writing duo of Dave Walker and Robert Mackenzie.
The conversation covers the meaning of adventure in today's world, the Venn diagram of role-playing games, comics, and improv theatre, the price of comics Down Under, doing your creative homework, ranking Indiana Jones's exploits, and much more!

1.37.1. The Old Guard: Opening Fire by Greg Rucka
SPOILERS
Pages: 184
Overall Rating: ★★★★☆ Storyline: ★★★☆☆ Dialogue: ★★★★☆ Characters: ★★★★☆ Art: ★★★★☆
Genre: Historical Fiction/Fiction/Action
TWs for the book: Nudity, s*xual content, cussing, violence, gore, discussion of mortality and death, military conflict, mild homophobia, mentions of child trafficking, self harm, mentions of slavery, mentions of drinking
POV: Third person POV with Andy’s thoughts/narrations when she’s in a scene
First Line: This is a fairytale of blood and bullets.
The plot centers around five immortals, Andy, Booker, Nicky, and Joe, and how they are now navigating a modern world. No one, not even the immortals themselves know why they are this way, but they are immensely long lived and regenerate from any and all injuries. They do know that they will die eventually, but they have no time frame or certain weapon that will guarantee it. One day they’ll just receive a fatal injury and instead of instantly healing, they’ll stay dead. Now, in a world they’ve been in for hundreds and thousands of years, they realize that technology has made it much harder for them to keep their anonymity, especially as one time assassin’s for hire. And they have new problems: a freshly discovered immortal, a US Marine named Nile, a former CIA agent and rich business owner partnered together who are determined to discover The Old Guard’s secret of immortality, and a traitor in their midst.
Andy: Andy (originally Andromache the Scythian) is sort of the narrator, and you get to hear her thoughts on things throughout the story. Your first impression of her is someone who is immensely old and immensely tired. She distracts herself through men and women alike, but nothing and no one means anything to her except for her team, Booker, Nicky, and Joe. But even with them she holds a very blunt and cynical view. She’s not above injuring or even “killing” them, and holds close the knowledge that one day, they all will eventually die. When Nile is first discovered, she explains the shock of the situation to her by shooting her in the head, and then, when Nile is still freaked out, shoots herself in the chest to show her she can't truly die either. But to them, because they have lived so long, true death comes as a blessing, something that Andy most of all longs for, being the eldest of 6732 years. Even still, bound by telepathic dreams from when they first “die” until they find one another, Andy cares very deeply and is immensely loyal to her team. She’s a good leader and is willing to make the tough calls. When Booker betrays their secret to a rich business owner who wants immortality for himself, Andy tells him that there has to be consequences, so if he spends 100 years in exile, he can come back to the team fully forgiven of his betrayal. You learn a little about her backstory throughout the book, and who she had travelled with throughout history. First was a woman named Noriko, then a man named Lykon, but both of them died before Andy. She did spend time living with an escaped slave named Achilles, but he grew old and she left before he could die and never saw him again, and since then she learned not to hold attachments to anyone like that.
Nicky: Nicky (originally Nicolo di Genova) is just a bit over a thousand years old. He was alive during the Crusades and fought on the opposite side of Joe. They discovered they were immortal because they couldn’t kill each other no matter how many times they tried, and then they fell in love. Andy refers to them as lucky, they didn’t have to search for each other through dreams, they were together from the start, and they formed a soul deep connection. Joe describes Nicky as having “...a kindness of which this world is not worthy. His very thoughts make music of the mundane.” Nicky also has the best description of what they are, saying, “But we’re not [immortal]...Our time just hasn’t come yet...Everyone dies, Mister Merrick. We just haven’t yet, that’s all.” Nicky and Joe both get captured by Merrick and Copley, the rich maniac and the ex CIA agent. Both of them try to defend the other from torture.
Joe: Joe (originally Yosuf al-Kaysani) is also described as being just a bit over a thousand years old. He was alive during the Crusades and fought on the opposite side of Nicky. After discovering they couldn’t kill each other, they fell in love. They were together from the start of it all. Joe describes his relationship with Nicky, “He is not my ‘boyfriend’. He is not my ‘lover’, nor is he my ‘partner’. He is all, and more.” They are the only two immortals that are in a relationship. Before and after escaping Merrick’s captivity, he is seen keeping track of those who hurt Nicky and killing them for it. They are both immensely skilled in fighting, as are the other members of The Old Guard, but it is especially showcased when they kill around 6 trained and armed soldiers in an armored van all while restrained.
Booker: Booker (originally Sebastian Le Livre) is the youngest of the immortals until Nile comes around, being only two centuries old. He was forced to fight in Napoleon’s army when they went into Russia to avoid going to prison for counterfeiting (again). He was hung for desertion the first time he “died”. He was hung for three days before getting down. He went back to his family, had a wife and four sons, but they all grew old and died. He tells his tale to Nile later as a cautionary tale as to why she shouldn’t go back to her family. He says, “You will watch all of them die...You will watch everyone you have loved pass away...they will ask you to share it [the secret of immortality] with them. And you will not be able to. And they will curse your name. They will beg, they will implore. They will not believe you when you say you cannot help them... And in desperation, they will do things to forever taint your memory of them. And they will still die. And you will never forget what they became before they did.” Booker betrays their secret to Merrick and Copley, and again sites his family and the memory of what happened to them as the reason why. “My family hated me by the time the last of them died...Life means nothing if it isn’t worth living...Copley said Merrick could figure out why we keep on living. And I thought, if he can do that then he can figure out how to make it stop. After him and Andy and Nile have shot each other multiple times, he helps get Nicky and Joe back and kill Merrick. Copley, however, is shown mercy by Andy. Later, in Malta, Andy, Nicky, and Joe argue about what to do about Booker. When Nile asks him what he’s going to do, he says simply, “Live.” Andy tells him there must be a price for what he did, and that if he wasn’t one of them he’d be dead already. She puts him in exile for a hundred years, and says to meet her back by the canal in Malta on that same day in a century.
Nile: Nile Freeman is the newest immortal, being only 26 years old. She was a US Marine, shot and killed in Afghanistan trying to save captive women from a terrorist. It is a huge mystery as to how she is alive because she bled out in her companion’s arms. Andy kidnaps her and shoots her in the head to show her she can’t die, then shoots herself in the chest to prove that she also can’t die. Nile is upset and wants to go back to her family, her mother and her baby brother, but is warned by Andy and Booker as to why being attached to mortals is a bad idea. Andy also tells her that she's lucky because none of the rest of the Old Guard has pictures of their family. Nile proves to be a valuable asset to the team and good timing when Booker is exiled. When brought to one of their warehouses, she recognizes a Rodin and is in shock of all the historical things they have kept there. It’s then revealed that she wanted to be an art history major after she got out of the Marine Corps.
Storyline: It’s an interesting way of portraying immortals. They were all born into violence and stay in it, only settling down for brief, unsatisfying years at a time before thrust back into conflicts and wars. And they all crave death, but find purpose in each other anyways. There being no knowledge of how or why they live or die as they do makes it all the more intriguing and mysterious. Also the difference in which the immortals act according to how old they are is very telling as well. While suspenseful at first, you quickly realize that there is nothing biologically different about them, or anything you can do to them that they have not already faced or dealt with, so it puts a slight damper on the “what’s going to happen” part of the story in my opinion.
Art: The art is a pretty unique style. The violence and gore in my opinion is depicted fairly tastefully and not overdone. All of the people have ethnically accurate features. There are a lot of beautiful shots, and the lighting is unique in every scene.
Representation: Andy is multi-sexual (bi/pan/omni/poly), seen sleeping with men and women. Joe and Nicky are in an mlm relationship. The Old Guard itself is also fairly racially diverse; Andy is Greek, Nicky is Italian, Joe is Middle Eastern, Booker is French, and Nile is African American.
Summary: Overall this is one of the more interesting graphic novels I’ve read. There’s a nice balance of good art, action, sarcastic dialogue, romance, and a good mystery (Where did the immortals come from? What are they? Why are they here? Why are they all warriors and assassins?).
Expanding Upon the TWs: You see Achilles, one of Andy’s lovers, full frontal nude on page 7 of Chapter 4. Achilles and Andy’s silhouettes are shown having s*x on page 8 of Chapter 4. On pages 1-4 of Chapter 1 Andy is shown sleeping with various men and women. Cussing, violence, gore, the discussion of morality and death, military conflict, and mentions of drinking are throughout. On pages 21-22 of Chapter 3 the men in the van show some homophobia towards Nicky and Joe. When Joe refuses to stop talking and asking Nicky if he’s alright, one of the soldiers mocks, “Aww, that’s sweet...what is he, your boyfriend?” Later, when Nicky and Joe kiss, the soldiers rush to pull them apart.   In the beginning of Chapter 1, Copley hires The Old Guard for a mission to save little girls that have been captured, but it turns out to be a set up. In order to prove to Nile that she is truly immortal, Andy shoots herself in the chest on page 23 of Chapter 2. On pages 7-9 of Chapter 5, Booker, Andy, and Nile jump out the window of a skyscraper to escape Merrick’s men. When talking about Achilles on page 4-9 there are brief mentions of slavery.
Quotes: “You are a child. An infant, and your mocking is thus infantile. That man is not my ‘boyfriend’. That man is more to me than you can dream in your simpering, pathetic life. That man is the stars in my sky, and the sun that lights my days. That man is the moon when I am lost in darkness, and warmth when I shiver in cold. I love that man beyond measure and reason. His kiss still thrills me, even after a millennium since I first tasted him. His body, to this day, awakens a passion you will never know. His heart overflows with a kindness of which this world is not worthy. His very thoughts make music of the mundane. He is not my ‘boyfriend’. He is not my ‘lover’, nor is he my ‘partner’. He is all, and more.”-Joe

Movie Review: The Old Guard
The Old Guard delivers an entertaining two hours that we want more of #TheOldGuard #Netflix
The Old Guard‘s concept is pretty simple. A new immortal is discovered and dragged into their shadowy world. Based on the comic series by Greg Rucka, Leandro Fernández, Daniela Miwa, and Jodi Wynne, and published by Image Comics.…

The Old Guard: The Force Multiplied #2
Tumblr media
The Old Guard: Force Multiplied #2 Image Comics 2019 Written by Greg Rucka Illustrated by Leandro Fernández Coloured by Daniela Miwa Lettered by Jodi Wynne     Andy wrestles with her past, and Nile continues to come to grips with her future. As their war against human trafficking escalates, their adversary is ultimately revealed, and the looming confrontation will unearth things long buried…     This is among the reasons why Greg is such a celebrated writer, with Stumptown, Checkmate and Gotham Central among his credits the man knows how to write some of the best procedural crime books around today. This is as intense and complex as they come too what with all their vaulted knowledge of war, warfare and for as long lived as they've become they have also become incredibly jaded and way too set in their ways. Then along comes Nile and suddenly the status quo is shaken up and the routine has become anything but and for Andy that kind of change makes her much too uncomfortable and increasingly volatile. If we have learned anything from the first gods is that living too long and having too much power has a habit of making you too unstable mentally. Just a little food for thought.     I like how this issue opens. Nile makes her usual drop with secret agent man, beware of pretty faces that you find, a pretty face can hide an evil mind, Ah, be careful what you say, or you'll give yourself away, and the arrangement suddenly gets complicated. Men such as he want to know more, give him a millimetre and he'll keep pushing until he gets more than a centimetre. It is a dangerous game dealing with men who think they have power and want more of it and in today's world that describes all too many. Still I do like seeing how this complicates matters all around, though for the boys not so much, but for Andy especially.     The way that this is being told is brilliantly done. From how we see the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information that highlights the books story & plot development to how we see this introduce new characters is expertly laid down. The character development as well is rather something else entirely as it would appear that the longer the women the more, I'm going to say unhinged, they become. It isn't so much as something subtle that makes me believe this either but then opinions are my own. The pacing is phenomenal and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see this ebb & flow snake through the book like a coiled cobra waiting to strike.     I really like the interior artwork we see here. There are old school elements, page seven is a great example of what I mean, and there is a modern take and sensibility so that we see Leandro's own unique style shining through. The linework and how we see and how it's varying weights are being utilised and creating this attention to detail s fantastic. Don't get me wrong I really wish we hadn't seen such a stiff kung-fu Barbie moment in this book and I really, really wish backgrounds were more prolific throughout as sometimes it just doesn't feel finished. Overall, however, the way we see the utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a really nice eye for storytelling. The colour work that we see really sets things off beautifully as we see through moments with the sun or that nice choice in that semi-negative space image. The hues and tones that we see throughout really create a misleading mood and tone and that's wonderful!      Greg never lets me down and as I find myself wrapped up in what could happen and what is going to wrong, let's face it things always go awry, that swirls through my mind. That what he and this team does and that's engage the reader and get them invested in the story like the true storytellers they are.
