"dabi-touya’s a reflection of todoroki family’s sins" - I doubt that's meant to be interpreted as Shouto saying the whole family is to blame, it's probably more in the sense of Touya is the reminder of the dark times in that families household!
i'd prefer the official translation this weekend, just that the "sins" word really tickles me off and its definition is completely different from "dark side"

WELL! I have just concluded the game that i bought on impulse bc i was hyperfixating on some of the characters (guess who!). I have A LOT of thoughts, but i'll start with some nutshell character thoughts and pairing shenanigains. Spoilers below!
Tumblr media
That 4th tier deserves a bit of elaboration
Juro: He is, at his core, a blank sheet of paper. A mild sandwich with no seasoning. And I like how this game handled that fact bc he was someone more prior to this, but he's given a new personality so he can rest from being so self-sacrificing (if he's anything like the juro izumi from 2 loops ago). He's in the "they're there" tier for a special reason, bc he's kind of meant to be just There.
Renya: Despite being there just to help the audience answer some questions regarding the fucked up narrative of the story, I think what gives him a leg up from the "They're there" tier is his lowkey hilarious relationship with Ryoko. He is perplexed and lowkey salty about how short their relationship lasted no matter how hard he tries. He tries to not gaf as much as Ryoko does but he still does. Ei calls him out on this. Its so so funny.
Megumi: HER NARRATIVE ON GRIEF WAS VERY WELL DONE and if it werent for the spaghetti bullshit of an ending the epilogue was, I would be soooo so intrested how she'd handle moving on from Izumi. I find the concept of Juro/Megumi much more bearable with Juro now having one sided feelings for Megumi while Megumi considers giving him a chance or not. That wouldve been a great closing to their relationship instead of. just getting toghether with no qualms! yeah juro i totally wasnt mouring a dead version of you in that simulation. lets kiss.
Miyuki: I KNEW YOU COULD SAVE THOSE KIDS WITHOUT INFLICTING SEVERE TRAUMA. Sadly aside from "saviour from above" themeing with her, theres nothing much outside of that. While im greatful she was there, she is just there in the end. But her efforts give her a leg up from that tier.
Chihiro: The concept of a very peeved elderly woman stuck in a pre-schoolers body is a funny one and im just extremely glad that 13SAR is not big enough that sobposters arent using her at large to fufill their degen fantasies. Aside from that shtick though, nothing else. Thats literally a baby
Moving onto the canon main pairings!:
Tumblr media
I saw someone calling HijiOki queer-bait and i can kindaaaa see why when basing it off the epilogue. Yeah they havent seem to progress much past 5 years and are at best still at talking stage while some of the others are literally married with kids (oh i'll get to that.) But I like to see it as the only pairing with realistic progression past. everything thats happened. Aside that they're just very funny!! Love their dynamic, will be rooting for them no matter how long it takes.
I did not expect myself to like SekiFuyu this much!! I do agree that Iori ESPECIALLY deserves more story outside hanging with gals and crushing over Sekigahara (not to say i didnt like it!!), but im very glad that the story subverted my expectations! I want them to be happy first and foremost, but i feel like the added angst from Iori realisng that she was a clone of THE Chihiro Morimura wouldve made this ship just a little bit more peak. Aside that, I support Iori shoujoisms and Sekigahara finding love and happiness.
I think my rating on Nentomi will change the more I ruminate on it. MeguJuro would be bumped up above RenRyo IF they didnt immediately fall in love after those 5 years and have Megumi still "thinking about it" while Juro goes "pleaaase :(" bc i think Megumi deserves to tease him a lil and think more about What the hell happened. ShuuYuki is the worst case of comphet between a lesbian and a looser bisexual ive seen.
Now.... the elephant in the room.
Ive talked to moots about how much i abhored the ending at first. Aside from the Darling in the Franxx-esque cop out, you expect me to believe that some of them just. got toghether after everything?? without any processing of What The Hell just happened?? nothing at all?? god
Im not the one to usually complain about comphet bc yeah its something i hate, but it usually doesnt sour my experience of consuming media so much. But god this is where its one of the main reasons why an ending is ruined for me. I hate hate HATED some of the epilogue scenes, esp with Nentomi and Shuuyuki bc of the straight people "my wife sucks but i love her" humour it radiates. ugh.
I would've loved a much more... bleak? more bittersweet?? outlook on the situation? after realisng everything is not real and you are basically the 15 adam and eves left to recreate human civilzation... that would be a pretty fucking huge thing to grapple with. I just wished that they had more complexity with this ending. Or! just stick with the fact that they're forever trapped in space colonies left to deal with the horrors of their situations and the mistakes of those in the past. Sorry for bring a tragic yuri enjoyer, but the overbearing dread and loom from the simulation story was what really made me intrested in 13SAR. To see it just solve itself with little drawback was so lame.
I read the George Kamitani aimed for 13SAR to have a mecha and shoujo hybrid story. While that's honestly an awesome concept, im sad it means that he can miss out on more complexity when intepretting the narrative when it comes to certain relationships (shoujos can be complex too!) I also heard that the game was meant to be at least 3 times longer that it is curently which is. wow. Its a shame that so much content got cut out 😭 bc i feel like a bit more time with these characters is all i need to make my verdict more positive.
As a bonus, i'll include a crackship tierlist too! Alot has changed
Tumblr media
I miiight need another few days or even weeks to compile another thoughts post bc theres definitely more things i wanna talk about (the narrative structure, Tamao, 2188 theories, themes of japanese imperialism-). But so far, im gonna let it ruminate for a bit before picking it back up to analyse

Romance, gender, intimacy, and mechas: How Xiran Jay Zhao transformed anime narratives using a critical lens
Psychogonically discusses the anime Darling in the Franxx and #1 New York Times Best Seller Iron Widow, comparing how the themes of romance, gender, and sex are handled, for better or worse.
This article compares and contrasts how themes of romance, gender, and sex are represented in the hit anime “Darling in the Franxx” and the YA novel “Iron Widow”. It includes both major and minor spoilers. As I was growing up I wasn’t exposed to a lot of media that openly discussed gender diversity. As far as direct representation, the only media that got me to think of gender from a critical…

Todays cane user of the day is Dr. Franxx from darling in the franxx from Darling in the franxx, its a really weird anime with a lot of mixed messages and a real late game twist. His cane is a controller of sorts and if you watch the anime this man needs the cane after what happened to him (no spoilers though) theres not really a whole lot to say, so ill just jump to giving him my score of a 7.25/10

This could be considered an “Unpopular Opinion” but… I ship Jamil and Kalim.
SPOILERS FOR BOOK 4!!
Tumblr media
I have always been a large fan of Childhood Friend -> Lovers pipeline. I see very often that my favorite trope never comes to fruition because in most media I end up watching and enjoying, there is a new potential interest and the pair I want is never fated to be: Example can be found in Darling in the Franxx, Kiznaiver, and an older anime called Girl’s Bravo!! I feel like I’m constantly being let down in a lot of media I want to see my ship sail and it did not.
However…
Tumblr media
Although in the game (I play the EN version but I do try to keep up with the JPN servers content) they are going to remain friends, I like to see them as potential lovers. Kalim is very naive and Jamil knows that he cannot do anything to out preform Kalim. But in the end and on multiple occasions, Kalim has shown he has viewed Jamil as a friend and pretty much an equal. Someone who is always looking out for him and would never hurt him. So seeing Kalim cry over finding out he was betrayed was very heart wrenching, even more so when they saved Jamil from his Overblot and all Kalim could do was cry in happiness that nothing bad had happened to Jamil, even after finding out that he had been hypnotizing him and planned to get Kalim EXPELLED from NRC. After Jamil revamps to be more honest, he doesn’t seem at all like he actually “hates” Kalim. More like he’s still upset over being outed to the world and Kalim’s extremely forgiving nature.
Tumblr media
I like to think that there is no Master x Servant relationship between them and there never was. Kalim genuinely viewed Jamil as his friend and never once truly saw him any other way. He’s aware that Jamil works for his family, but he doesn’t really care?? During book 4 when the Octrio arrive and they offer to take over for Jamil, Kalim was excited knowing that Jamil would be getting a break. So when I see the Jamil’s FanClub memes I kick my feet like a little schoolgirl seeing Kalim involved in whatever the post may be today. I don’t really like seeing Kalim villainized in book 4 over something he wasn’t able to see until he was told about it. His sickening kindness and him not following the hierarchy he and Jamil were born into…
Tumblr media
TLDR; I want Jamil and Kalim to get married and live a mundane lifestyle were they split up chores (Kalim is taught housework) and they co-exist as lovers in a quiet space. No hierarchy, no reason to not be totally transparent with one another… I want them to just hold hands and share the same bed.

I'm watching Heavenly Delusion and I love it so much! I really like the style, it feels so crisp! (idk how else to explain it...) I also really like the opening, I've been listening to it on repeat.
Nevertheless, I have a lot of questions. I know that the show has just started so most of these will probably be answered but it's fun to speculate anyway. Also I have not read the manga (if there is one), so all of this is just weird thoughts. [Spoilers start here]
If the "Maru touch" can be taught then why is it not at least a little bit more widespread? Why does Maru even need a bodyguard? He can kill the man-eaters easier than everyone else so far and he knows how to fight.
Are the adults in the facility (I'm assuming that that is the "heaven" that the duo is looking for) growing man eaters? Cuz the infant creature that Tokio and her friend find looks a lot like one.
The kids themselves are also a little weird. It seems like they have abilities or something like that. Some have superhuman strength and the girl that led Tokio to the infants acts a bit like a frog (she also looks a bit like one too, reminds me of that bnha character, tsuyu??). Why is that? Are the adults genetically modifying them?
Also, the way they react to prepubescent feelings, like liking someone for example, remind me a lot of how the kids in Darling in the Franxx behaved as well, since they also we're not taught such things. I wonder if this show took inspiration from that?
One of the kids, the boy who draws really well, (I forgot his name) either knows more than what he is letting on or something is definitely going on with him. In the first episode he drew a depiction of a man-eater that appeared later on in the show (the fish with arms). I'm sure that many saw that, I mean it was quite explicit, but it's interesting to note anyway. I think that he will be an important character in the future.
What caused the world that we see to become the way that it is when the show is taking place? We know that it is Earth because Japan is mentioned, as well as cities such as Tokyo. Also Kiru should be somewhere in her twenties, maybe in her mid twenties (I did the math based on info from the first episode) and and she was born some years before the apocalypse happened (five years before, I think, but I could be wrong). This is important because this rules out some events that could have happened. For example this is definitely not a post nuclear war world, otherwise the characters would all wear radiation equipment. Yet, it was probably a major event, seeing as it wiped out whole cities.
Is Japan the only county affected by this apocalypse? I mean, it is an island, so if communication lines went down they would never know what happened to the rest of the world...
Where did the man-eaters come from? Is someone creating them? If that is the case, then they are being very inventive, since so far each man-eater looked unique and had it's own special ability.
Back to the boy who drew the man-eater. It might be that these children were taken into the facility after the apocalypse under the pretence that they would be cared for and their memories are wipes, which is why they do not remember the outside. All but this one guy for some reason, maybe his memory slowly started coming back?

finished reading iron widow yesterday
super entertaining for the most part and absolutely silly in the violent, batshit way. very weeb, and though some of the tropes thrown in there i'm not the biggest fan of (you know, the edgy, kinda juvenile ones), it was still incredibly fun reading them in this context.
i went in not expecting the greatest feminist story of all time which i think was a good thing—lots of people seemed pissed off for the message the books sends but i was mostly curious about the spin on darling in the franxx. the feminist stuff was blunt as a hammer and also equally subtle, ehh whatever, sometimes what you need is a good power fantasy. though i do agree not all the finer points in the book were the greatest, like how all the female characters treated each other terribly, without exception, and we never got to see that getting turned around, really.
wu zetian, absolutely not the most multifaceted character, but honestly i liked the fact that the character is just kinda evil lol i just hope the sequel won't try and frame her actions as redeemable. it's and Everyone Sucks Here situation, sometimes violence is the only answer but that doesn't mean everything she did was justifiable and that's fine.
(spoilers under the cut)
the polycule was cute, the dynamics were promising, and i would have loved to see more of it but it was so underdeveloped and hurried that when li shimin died it was just a huge disappointment and a waste of potential instead of something truly impactful and sad. like they all BARELY got together before that. if there's some polycule version of bury your gays then this is it. just make the book like 200 pages longer and give me a nothing happens, gays live in peace montage in the middle

Thoughts on the first episode of G-witch under the cut for spoiler reasons - I know it's just the first episode but it just came out and people will probably want to watch it first.
OK, interesting beginning. I'm not sure if gundam-meets-school-drama is what I expected from this - it definitely feels like it's borrowing the setup from other recent non-Gundam series - it was bringing Darling in the Franxx to mind for some reason, but there's enough interesting about the setting to make me want to give it a shot. I'd be willing to bet that it moves more towards the typical Gundam plot as it progresses, they wouldn't set up all these different megacorps with differing mobile suit designs if they weren't all going to fall out and get into a big slamfuck war at some point, but as things stand right now it's probably the most relatively constrained in scale setting I can think of when it comes to Gundam, save maybe War in the Pocket, and it's pretty obvious that things are going to be more character-driven for now.
And obviously characters are going to be a big deal in this one. Let's address the elephant in the room - it's the first Gundam series to feature a primarily female main cast, so a lot of attention is going to be on protagonist Suletta Mercury and the other primary characters, especially after the plot of this first episode - it seems like this series might be about to make a play for Fight! Iczer-1's crown as the mecha series with the most overt lesbian overtones out there - I feel like the plot of this episode and perhaps the series as a whole is going to bring a lot of strongly-worded opinions from a lot of annoying people.
That particular aspect of the characterisation so far doesn't bother me at all, but there was another problem for me - I dropped Sunrise's other recent mecha series Kyokai Senki after just a few episodes primarily because I was annoyed at how much a wet blanket the protagonist was, with him stammering his way through most of his dialogue and kowtowing to and getting pushed around by other people constantly. The impression I got of Suletta from this first episode was unfortunately similar. Now, she did show the right amount of fortitude when it mattered, and I'm sure that her growing out of that kind of behaviour is going to be a big part of her character arc, but I do hope that A) that doesn't take her too long and B) that they take her growth as a character in an interesting direction, and that for now they at least dial down the woobieness of her character from the levels on show in this episode. Of course, it couldn't be more clear that a huge part of this show is going to concern her relationship with the secondary protagonist Miorine Rembran, who I got a better first impression of - she's a much more serious and cool personality who's obviously going to be to Suletta's counterpart over the course of the series, but even though I liked her more from the get-go I also really hope that she gets some good characterisation going forward - there is the potential there for her to become a boring character if the writing team make too many wrong choices.
As for the show's presentation, I liked it. The show's got a nice artstyle and the quality level of this first episode was pretty high, though we need to wait and see if it stays that way. The mobile suit designs on show were pretty strong - the Dilanza, the big pink machine with the feathery crest and big beam spear, serves its purpose nicely firstly as an imposing adversary and then as a convenient victory for the Gundam Aerial, who makes about as impressive a combat debut as any other lead Gundam I can think of off the top of my head. The visuals of it taking the poor Dilanza to pieces with its remote bit weaponry was honestly really impressive, and I hope we got plenty more battle scenes animated to the same standard. I already liked the Aerial when it was revealed, but I think I might just have to spend some cash on that 1/100 full mechanics kit of it that they just announced when it comes out. As for the other mobile suit scenes, some were very obviously hand-drawn, and some are quite apparently done with 3DCG, and there were actually a few shots where I had a hard time figuring out whether they were one or the other. Just shows that we're getting to the point where 3D animation's no longer the kiss of death for a mecha anime's visuals. While bad 3D can still look rancid (last year's Getter Robo Arc is a prime example despite being a modern series) when it's done with care it can look quite good now. I just hope they adhere to the same standards as this episode.
At any rate, things could still go either way, but it was a decent enough start. The fact that this is only 13 episodes for now with another 13 in 2023 is on the face of it a little disappointing, but at the same time I'm hoping that that fact might keep the pacing tighter than IBO, the last new non-Build-series Gundam to hit TV screens. There's still many other ways this could all go badly wrong but for now I'm glad that the Gundam experience of big cool robots with a veneer of thinly-disguised homoeroticism isn't just for boys anymore.

The Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao is similar to The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and the anime Darling in the FRANXX combined, which I think is very interesting. 🤔 Here's me writing about their similarities, from what I remember
⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD OF ALL 3 SERIES ⚠️
The Iron Widow and the Hunger Games :
There's a Capitol city where the elite and the rich mostly live
The main character becomes a central figure of change and rebellion against the elite and the rich and societal constructs
The main character's hometown is in a severely poor district
The main character is a woman and the story has two male potential love interests. A bunch of drama occurs among this group
The main character is strongly negatively impacted by society (lots of sexism and stuff)
The main character has a sister. The sister is important to the plot
Certain character *cough* associated with the main character dies
Birds are prominent in the story (the vermilion bird and mockingjays)
The main character becomes famous
The Iron Widow and Darling in the FRANXX :
There are giant mechas!!
Giant mechas can transform
Giant mechas can only be piloted/rode by a pair of humans, synchronized by their minds (do I sniff a certain whiff of Neon Genesis Evangelion nearby?)
Giant mecha pilots are placed in awkward positions while they ride (debatable though)
Humans use these mechas to fight alien creatures that nobody seemingly knows much about
The main character is forced to partner with the strongest pilot
The strongest pilot's previous partners have all died after riding with them only a few times
The main character is abnormally able to survive the partnership with the strongest pilot
The main character and the strongest pilot become close and they are considered an unstoppable duo
Outer space is an important aspect to the plot and world building
Story is set in the far future
There is a giant wall to protect humans
The main character has two potential love interests. A bunch of drama occurs among them
Birds are important to the story

ahhh i can’t wait to see what people think of chapter 5. easily the worst hanma treats reader in act 1 of the story (arguably the worst in the whole story). And this is also very much the borderline where we’re moving into act 2.
i had so much fun with this one. just so many little allusions and details packed into the writing that i want to scream about into the abyss. (and have mostly just been screaming nonsensically at my confused sister instead)
Like the horses: Mezuki is the name of a horse-headed demon in Japanese mythology; Hiro’s Hero is a play on words (obviously) but also an allusion to Darling in the Franxx which I watched recently. Smooth Criminal because I think that would be hilarious and is just the kind of name they give racehorses.
Or talking about the dad bribing his kids at the track with candy. My dad - a gambling addict - always bought me an ice cream sundae at the track lol. Please don’t gamble. It is seriously a disease.
writing from hanma’s pov is so much harder because his thought processes are erratic and i try to write him with more detachment and symbolic language, but some of my favorite metaphors and symbols of the story came about in this chapter (like the tangled necklaces and the horse blinders).
and i literally want to frame the line 'preening primadonnas' to describe racehorses. like, i'm sorry to toot my own horn, but that is a LINE.
the **spoiler** sex scene. that is not one of my kinks at all. but it just felt so obvious once i started writing, and then it felt so obvious that oh yeah, hanma’s actually a giant switch for reader isn’t he? And I just love it. I am not even ashamed to gush over how proud i am of this chapter after all the pain and suffering it put me through to get to this point.
may chapter 6 be just as good and half as hard!

Zero-Two is a nightmare
(It's super long and ranty btw) So I recently watched Darling in the Franxx since I saw the memes a while back and overall, good anime. Definitely a recommendation if you haven't watched it and like mecha animes and romance. However the main character dynamic is just so disturbed. If you haven't seen it and plan to, full spoilers below the breakpoint. If you want the romance 'ruined' though try to keep this question in mind (Yes I'm drawing it out so you can stop reading): "Does she actually know Hiro's name?"
I'll be honest, I didn't think I got off on the right foot with the show. The kiss she forced on him without Hiro knowing what it was already rubbed me the wrong way and somehow that managed to be the least of her problems. In the first half of the show the 'relationship' is one-sided, with Hiro moving heaven and earth for her while she's clearly just using him. At no point does she actually show care for him as a person, for his well-being or for his relation with other people. Even the feeding him at the table, which is the most relation-y thing I can remember her doing, is just for her benefit. He doesn't seem into it, he doesn't seem to like steak with honey and she doesn't wait for him to eat, she forces him to.
Zero-Two acts cold, dismissive with no concern for other people and her relationship with Hiro is nothing but 'greed'. She 'loves' him like a dragon loves gold. Not for any intrinsic value, both want to have it so no-one else can. She doesn't care whether he lives or dies to such a degree that when she has to pick between 'an itch for battle' and his last few minutes on this planet, she picks the former. Other people's lives just don't count to her. She's caused the deaths of multiple people and she can't even be bothered to remember for 24 hours with a living reminder in eyesight.
Another thing is that at no point in the entire show does she take any responsibility for what she's done. The narrative keeps forgiving her but she never actually bothers to learn her lesson. The only even possible exception I can think of is at the start of the second half after the Hand comes down. That off-screen conversation is the only spot where it could feasilbly be slotted into. And it's not once or twice, it just continues. She kills Hiro, he survived so it's fine. Insubordination endangering the team, eh. She puts the rest of the team in the hospital, reconciliation is on the table once the scabs are fully formed. And another thing about that hospital scene: Her thought is 'This is my punishment' which just shows you how much she thinks the world revolves around her. It's a logical consequence of how bad she's acting and her mind frames it like it's divine punishment.
But the main thing thing that just didn't leave me after I thought about it is the constant use of 'Darling'. It was super cute in the memes but once I noticed she literally never calls Hiro by his name it became much less sweet. It struck me like a rockstar calling their side-piece-of-the-week 'babe' because they can't be bothered to learn the actual name. With Zero-Two it mostly strikes me as the actual object of her affection. This vague memory of her 'darling'. Every corpse she's squeezed of energy like a capri-sun was just a temporary substitute which was enjoyed as long as they could last. Hiro is no different to her.
You might argue that that's just until their shared memory is unlocked and I firmly argue against. I don't think Zero-Two actually loves Hiro, the person, even after that. Nothing much changes about Hiro after that so what is this part she oh-so-suddenly loves now? Is it his sweet personality which he'd been displaying since day 1? Is it his leading position among people she didn't even bother to see as alive before? Why does she 'love' him once she knows that he was the boy who gave her freedom? To me the answer became 'she doesn't, he just changed roles from being a substitute to being the embodiment of her Darling'. She acts better because she's supposed to act lovey-dovey with her Darling. She plays ball with his friends so they don't force the wedge between parasite and host again. Maybe this is a bit too assenine, in fact it almost certainly is. But a healthy relationship tends to provide some actual counter-arguments to this line of thinking.
Some miscellaneous things: She fully intended to rape Hiro on that beach. The interruptions between Hiro and Ichigo were most likely intentionally since her senses are suggested to be excellent. Even in those scenes after the Princess kidnapped Hiro I didn't see concern, just focus on her-her-her.
Overall she can feel like a psychopath who instead of reading the Wolf of Wallstreet, read a sappy romance novel. (And thought that analogy up before the picturebook came to light) The show overall is great, the side-characters more than making up for the more messed up parts of the dynamic. Even the main couple themselves aren't unwatchable since the scenes themselves are sweet enough to be enjoyable. It's just the more I think about it the less sympathetic Zero-Two becomes. It just makes Hiro feel mind-controlled honestly.
The weirdest thought I had was that overall the show feels like a fanfic of another show in which Zero-Two doesn't exist. One where Hiro and Ichigo end up together which the writer of the fanfic really hated for whatever reason. The "I feel nothing" line just felt really egregious to me thought it lines up nicely with this. It'd probably have two seasons with the second being VIRM focused with them under command of the Princess and Hiro under some effect similar to that pulsing tumor-thingy he has during his third ride with Zero-Two. Since Zero-Two takes a decent chunk of the role of the Princess, the VIRM plotline is squished into just a few episodes and of course the central OC solves the issue by blowing up the VIRM homeworld. As opposed to something like Hiro and Ichigo undergoing full Saurification and slumbering underneath the earth for the next wave. I don't know, just some deranged idea to explain why the show feels so centralized on someone with surface level humanity.
Sorry for the rant, I'm probably wrong and/or stupid for it but thanks for reading. (if you did.)
