My headcanon is that Darmok and Jalad was a television buddy cop show and the entire culture of the planet became the way we can have entire conversations in Star Trek or Simpsons references today.
This is the elevator episode.

I don’t care if it’s not funny, I will continue to make jokes about Darmok. That shit always makes me laugh. There is a critical lack of Darmok jokes in the Star Trek fandom which is a crime because that shit is hilarious

In the Star Trek episode, "Darmok" the Enterprise encounters the Tamarian people, who speak entirely in allusions to their own mythology. It's a wonderful episode, which raises the question, "How are the Tamarians learning their own stories in order to be able to speak solely in memes?"
Here's my thought. The spoken Tamarian language is entirely in memes. The written language is more complex. "Hang on," I hear you say, "If the written language is complex enough to tell a story why don't they speak it as well?" To which I say, "You, a screaming woman insisting a written language must be pronounceable, me, a cat eating a salad using this very meme as an example."
