The actor Bill Simpson was born as William Nicholson Simpson on September 11th 1934.
Born in Dunure, Ayrshire Bill began his career as an announcer for BBC Scotland. His only appearance in a movie was as a non-speaking extra (his name was missing from the film credits playing a bridegroom in the first remake of John Buchan's story The 39 Steps, which starred Kenneth More as Richard Hannay, although ne was several TV Movies.
Simpson devoted the rest of his career to television, radio and stage. In 1962 BBC Television adapted Robert Louis Stevenson's novel The Master of Ballantrae in which Simpson played the part of Hastie in six 30-minute episodes. Later that year, he took the role of Mr. Ogilvie in "Appearance in Court", an episode of the popular BBC police drama, Z Cars.
In  August 1962 the BBC began broadcasting its long-running Scottish medical drama Dr Finlay's Casebook, Simpson played the title role of Dr Alan Finlay, and was supported by Andrew Cruickshank as Dr Cameron, his older partner at the Arden House surgery in Tannochbrae, and Barbara Mullen as their housekeeper, Janet. With locations at Callander in Stirling, the show ran for eight seasons, the final episode, being shown on 3rd January 1971. Simpson also starred in 104 audio episodes of the A. J. Cronin  story, made by BBC Radio 4, from 1970 to 1975.
On Hogmanay 1969 he was one of several stars who appeared in Ring in the New, the first colour programme broadcast from the BBC Scotland studios in Glasgow’s Queen Margaret Drive.
After Dr Finlay finished its television run Simpson continued to work for the BBC. In 1973 he took a role as MacNair in the Scottish independence drama series Scotch on the Rocks, which was broadcast in five 40-minute episodes. In 1975 he appeared in one instalment of the BBC TV series Quiller. He played Sir Andrew Kilbrane, alongside Michael Jayston as Quiller, in an episode called Target North, which involved the death of a government minister. He also took the part of Rob Dow in the BBC's Play of the Month series in 1975, in an adaptation of J. M. Barrie's play The Little Minister, in which he co-starred with Helen Mirren and Ian Ogilvy.
Simpson had a part in a 1976 episode of the North East England drama When the Boat Comes In, playing Sandy Lewis.
Back in Scotland Bill Simpson then appeared in The Mackinnons, taking the starring role of Donald, head of the Mackinnon family, who live in the Western Isles  and feel threatened by the influx of new people with new lifestyles into their community. The show only aired for one series featuring 13 episodes.
He next travelled to France and West Germany to shoot the 1979 television mini-series Die Abenteuer des David Balfour , or as we know it,  Kidnapped , a co-production between HTV in England, Technisonor of France and Tele-München of Germany. Simpson played James of the Glens,  David McCallum played the lead role of Alan Breck Stewart.
Bill Simpson had a his history of heart problems, it is perhaps not surprising that he became less busy in the 1980′s. He contributed less to television drama, and more to factual subjects, introducing the TV coverage of the British Open Golf Championship at Royal Troon in 1982, with Peter Allis.
One of Bill’s last appearance was in the Scottish Television docu-drama Scotland's Story: Mary and an End to the French Connection, playing John Knox; and one more, made in 1986, which he did not live to watch.
On 21st December 1986, at the age of 55, Bill Simpson died from a bronchopneumonia in Mauchline, East Ayrshire. His role as a driver's boss in the TV drama, Shoot for the Sun, was not shown on television until 16th March 1987.

The film’s crew is also the recipient of two Academy Awards with an additional three nominations. The Grue Crew goes a tiny bit giddy over this influential classic from the 60s. Check out what they have to say.
At the time of this writing, Fantastic Voyage is available to stream from most PPV sites, and as a very economical Blu-ray treatment from 20th Century Studios.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule is one chosen by Daphne, the BBC TV Live production of Nineteen Eighty-Four (1954), starring Pete Cushing, Yvonne Mitchell, Donald Pleasence, and André Morell!

The respected Scottish actor Roy Hanlon passed away on June 30th 2005.
Throughout his career Roy Hanlon was a much loved and respected character actor. He appeared often on television, with many theatre companies in Scotland and Ireland and graced many productions at the Edinburgh Festival. Indeed he had the distinction of appearing in three productions of the epic Thrie Estaites in the same role. His well-known face, however, was seen in important supporting roles in a host of Scottish drama series, including Dr Finlay’s Casebook, Sutherland’s Law and The Borderers.
Roy Hanlon trained with the Scottish Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1960. He joined the Glasgow Citizens’ Company and was a member of the company at that year’s Edinburgh Festival in Durenmatt’s seldom-performed Romullus the Great. He was back two years later in an equally rare play - The Doctor and the Devils - with a host of leading Scottish actors.
In 1964 Hanlon made the first of several appearances in Dr Finlay’s Casebook and appeared as a menacing doctor in Edward Bond’s acclaimed radio drama Castles in Spain. In 1967 he was in two films. The first (Robbery), starring Stanley Baker, was about a gang who robbed the overnight Glasgow to London train. He then appeared in an espionage thriller, The Naked Runner alongside Frank Sinatra and Edward Fox. Critics greeted neither movie with much enthusiasm. Two years later, Hanlon was cast in several leading television dramas of the period, notably the underground spy drama Jason King, which made a star of Peter Wyngarde.
Throughout the 1970s, Hanlon appeared in a host of roles. These included BBC Scotland’s popular 1972 drama Sutherland’s Law, about a procurator fiscal, starring Iain Sutherland, and The Saint - the award-winning series on ITV starring Roger Moore.
It was in 1984 that Hanlon first came to the Festival to play Spiritualitie in Tom Fleming’s dramatic production of the Thrie Estaites. The production starred such actors as Andrew Cruickshank, David Rintoul, Edith Macarthur and Alec Heggie and was repeated the following year. Hanlon also returned to the same role in the 1991 production of the play. In 1985 it was performed at the Assembly Hall in tandem with Sydney Goodsir Smith’s The Wallace, in which Hanlon played John Mentieth. The Wallace demanded much of the huge cast: the opening scene alone was given in old Scots and contemporary English.
In the early 1980s, Hanlon became a regular visitor to Ireland and worked often with the Abbey Theatre of Dublin (including a memorable Doctor’s Dilemma in 1982). Two years earlier he had made a notable impression in the world premiere of Brian Friel’s Translations, in which Hanlon delivered an engrossing account of Jimmy Jack alongside the young Liam Neeson and Stephen Rea.
Hanlon was with the Abbey in 1995 for Patrick Mason’s production of Sebastian Barry’s The Only True History of Lizzie Finn. In 1998 Hanlon was nominated for a Barclay’s Theatre Award for his appearance in Juno and the Paycock. Hanlon remained a fiercely proud Scot and was devoted to his profession and his family. He was still working up to 2014, when he was seen in BBC2’s Takin’ Over the Asylum.

Maude ‘Lores’ Bonney: Why a Google Doodle celebrates the Australian aviator’s 122nd birthday today
Maude 'Lores’ Bonney became the first woman to fly from Australia to England in 1933, surviving storms, crashes and a herd of water buffalo
By David Hughes
Wednesday, 20th November 2019, 6:08 pm
Google is celebrating the Australian aviator Maude “Lores” Bonney with a special commemorative Doodle on what would have been her 122nd birthday.
The first woman to fly solo from Australia to England, Bonney made her groundbreaking voyage in 1933, surviving heavy storms, two crashes and a confrontation with a herd of water buffalo.
Her achievements made her a pioneer for female pilots, earning her an MBE and inspiring the generations of women that followed – here’s what you need to know about her.
Trailblazing record-breaker
Maude Rose Rubens was born on 20 November 1897 in Pretoria, South Africa, later adopting the name “Lores”.
She moved with her family first to England and then to Australia, growing up in Melbourne before attending a finishing school in Germany.
It was there that she met her husband Harry Barrington Bonney, and the married couple moved to Brisbane, Queensland.
Harry’s cousin was Bert Hinkler, a pioneering aviator and inventor dubbed the “Australian Lone Eagle”, who was the first to fly solo both from Australia to England and across the Southern Atlantic Ocean.
It took just one flight in his Avron Avian biplane in 1928 to spark Bonney’s desire to become a pilot.
She initially took flying lessons in secret, but after she revealed her intentions to her husband, he bought her a de Havilland “Gypsy Moth”, named My Little Ship.
In 1931, Bonney completed the first of her record-breaking feats in this aircraft with the longest one-day flight by a woman: a 1,600km, 15-hour voyage from Brisbane to Wangaratta, Victoria to meet her father for dinner.
From Brisbane to… Croydon
The following year, she became the first woman to circumnavigate Australia by air, a journey of 12,800km, before making her epic, history-making flight to England in 1933.
Her 20,000km trek from Brisbane to Croydon took 157 hours of flight time fraught with peril – her encounter with the buffalo came as she tried to land on a beach, forcing her to veer off into the sea.
After substantial delays caused by weather, bureaucracy and mechanical failures (and repairs), Bonney arrived in Croydon at 5.20pm on 21 June, two months and six days since she departed. Following her achievement, Bonney was appointed MBE by King George V in 1934.
She completed another milestone in 1937, flying a different aircraft – a Klemm Kl 32 – from Australia to South Africa, the country of her birth.
However, her dream of completing a flight around the world (via Japan, Alaska and the US) was curtailed by the outbreak of the Second World War, and the destruction of her plane in a hangar fire.
Although she held a commercial pilot’s licence until 1948, her failing eyesight and hearing ruled out any further record attempts after the war ended.
Bonney lived the rest of her long life in privacy, although further recognition came with the award of the Order of Australia Medal in 1991.
She died at the age of 96 in a nursing home, 57 years after setting her final record – as a final tribute, a Queensland electoral district was named in her honour in 2017.
'An inspiration for everyone’
The animated Google Doodle honouring Bonney’s flight to England on 20 November was designed by the artist Matt Cruickshank, who said he was inspired by “her attitude to diversity”.
Highlighting Google’s efforts “to celebrate well-known and not-so-well-known stories equally”, he explained: “I grew up reading boys’ adventure comics about male explorers.
"Bonney’s accomplishments are straight out of a girls’ adventure comic and are equally as important. She can be an inspiration for everyone.”
On the design itslef, Cruickshank said: “Australia is East of the UK, so adding in both countries visually left me with the simple task of connecting Bonney’s journey using animation. Far easier than how she achieved the task.”
