Nassau County will ban transgender athletes from competing in women’s and girls sports at local facilities.
County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced the executive order, which will go into effect immediately, at a press conference on Thursday, Feb. 22.
The order applies only to female competitive sports, not co-ed or male sports. It will prevent transgender women from participating in women’s sports at all county-run facilities.
"This is not precluding anybody from participating in sports," said Blakeman. "What it is, it's identifying that there are women and girls who spend a tremendous amount of time and effort to excel and compete in their sports that are women's sports.”
Further calling the allowing of transgender women in women’s sports “bullying,” Blakeman said that “it’s a situation of fairness…it is an unfair advantage for someone who is a biological male to compete against a biological female."
He was joined by District 18 Legislator Samantha Goetz and Kim Russell, a former women's lacrosse coach at Ohio's Oberlin College who said she was terminated after speaking out against transgender athletes participating in women's sports.
New York LGBT Network President Dr. David Kilmnick condemned the move in a statement released shortly after the announcement.
“We are profoundly disappointed in Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s announcement of an executive order aimed at banning transgender athletes from participating in sports teams that align with their gender identity.”
Calling the order “deeply alarming,” Kilmnick said that it “not only undermines the principles of inclusivity and fairness but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and exclusion.”
Blakeman said he did not know how many transgender athletes there are in Nassau County, but cited that between half a percent and one percent of all residents in the county identify as transgender.

Olivia de Havilland and Montgomery Clift in The Heiress (William Wyler, 1949)
Cast: Olivia de Havilland, Montgomery Clift, Ralph Richardson, Miriam Hopkins, Vanessa Brown, Betty Linley, Ray Collins, Mona Freeman, Selena Royle, Paul Lees, Harry Antrim, Russ Conway, David Thursby. Screenplay: Ruth Goetz, Augustus Goetz, based on their play suggested by a novella by Henry James. Cinematography: Leo Tover. Production design: Harry Horner. Film editing: William Hornbeck. Music: Aaron Copland.
With 12 Oscar nominations and three wins for directing, William Wyler holds a firm place in the history of American movies. But not without some grumbling on the part of auteur critics like Andrew Sarris, who observed, "Wyler's career is a cipher as far as personal direction is concerned." His movies were invariably polished and professionally made, but if what you're looking for is some hint of personality behind the camera, the kind that Alfred Hitchcock or Howard Hawks or John Ford displayed no matter what the subject matter of the film, then Wyler is an enigma. His most personal film, The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), grew out of his wartime experiences, but they are subsumed in the stories he has to tell and not revealed with any assertively personal point of view on them. And anyone who can trace a Wylerian personality latent in movies as varied as Mrs. Miniver (1942), Roman Holiday (1953), Ben-Hur (1959), and Funny Girl (1968) has a subtler analytical mind than mine. What they have in common is that they are well made, the work of a fine craftsman if not an artist. The other thing they have in common is that they won Oscars for their stars: Greer Garson, Audrey Hepburn, Charlton Heston, and Barbra Streisand, respectively. The Heiress, too, won an Oscar for its star, Olivia de Havilland, suggesting that in Wyler we have a director whose virtue lay not in his personal vision but in his skill at packaging, at arranging a showcase not just for performers -- he also directed Oscar-winning performances by Bette Davis in Jezebel (1938) and by Fredric March and Harold Russell in The Best Years of Our Lives -- but also for production designers, costume designers, composers, and cinematographers: Oscars for The Heiress went to John Meehan, Harry Horner, and Emile Kuri for art direction and set decoration, to Edith Head and Gile Steele for costumes, and to Aaron Copland for the score, and Leo Tover was nominated for his cinematography. Wyler lost the directing Oscar to Joseph L. Mankiewicz for A Letter to Three Wives, but is there any doubt that The Heiress would have been a lesser film than it is without Wyler's guidance? All of this is a long-winded way to say that although I honor, and in many ways prefer, the personal vision that shines through in the works of directors like Hitchcock, Hawks, Ford, et al., there is room in my pantheon for the skilled if impersonal professional. As for The Heiress itself, it's a satisfying film with two great performances (de Havilland's Catherine and Ralph Richardson's Dr. Sloper), one hugely entertaining one (Miriam Hopkins's Lavinia Penniman), and one sad miscasting: Montgomery Clift's Morris Townsend. It's a hard role to put across: Morris has to be plausible enough to persuade not only Catherine but also the somewhat more worldly Lavinia that he is genuinely in love with Catherine and not just her money, but he also needs to give the audience a whiff of the cad. Clift's Morris is too callow, too grinningly eager. There is no ambiguity in the performance. If we like Morris too much, we risk seeing Dr. Sloper more as an over-stern paterfamilias and less as the cruelly self-absorbed man he is. Richardson's fine performance goes a long way to righting this imbalance, but he's fighting Clift's sex appeal all the way.

I Hate Christmas (2022)
Tumblr media
My first impression is that it’s just the Italian version of the Norwegian series “Home for Christmas” that I’ve previously reviewed. The first episode even has the same title. Either way, I’ll still watch it. I’m gonna be lazy and not color code any names though because it’s hard to include everyone all the time without spoiling things.
1:1 The Big Christmas Lie
Gianna (Pilar Fogliati) is a nurse who has been single for 3 years and, at 30, her family is starting to get worried about her not having a family. Ridiculous, but also so relatable. She lies and tells her family she has a boyfriend and she’ll bring him to Christmas. So now she’s working overtime to find a boyfriend.
1:2 Bicycles
We follow Gianna on several bad dates that don’t work out because mostly these guys suck, but also Gianna does not pull any punches. Which good for her. The music keeps tripping me up a little because it’s American, but it’s also not Christmas music, it’s more like dance club songs but over a landscape of Venice. I know American music is popular around the world, but I don’t really expect EDM as a transition song, ya know? Anyway, so Gianna gives up on meeting guys on the street and tries Tinder (shout out- that’s how my husband and I met!) and goes out with a high school aged dude named Davide (Nicolas Maupas) who, based on the montage that occurred, fucks really well. Might go look up the age of consent in Italy real quick.
1:3 I’m Special
Gianna goes on a date with a local politician (who acts like he hates being famous when he’s not even famous) and runs into her parents and finds out that the politician used to date her mom back in college. Gross. Clearly he has a type. So she ditches him with her parents and goes to the high schooler again. There are some jokes at the top of the episode about making sure he’s legal, so that’s either less or more gross, I can’t decide.
1:4 Perspectives
Gianna fucks things up with the high school boy by making a joke that makes him think she’s trying to get serious. I hate this plot line. It grosses me out so much. Anyway. After pedophilia didn’t work out, Titti (Beatrice Arnera) (her roommate) convinces her to dress nice (slutty) and go to the nurse Christmas party and drink. At the party, she runs into some familiar faces who promptly overstay their welcome in her life. But Umberto (Glen Blackhall) (a doctor from the hospital she works at) is still into her and she still hasn’t realized that. If by the end of this episode, you don’t kinda hate her mother, congratulations for your healthy relationship with your family because that’s the only way her mother could seem like a joke.
1:5 The Party’s Over
So I watched the last two episodes back to back, there might be some bleeding between the two. I’ll do my best. So Gianna had an eventful evening. She baked a cake for Davide only to discover him (with the cake in her hands) swapping spit with a girl his own age. Woof. So then she meets up with her besties (minus Titti who is with a man🍆) Margherita (Fiorenza Pieri), her older sister, and Caterina (Cecilia Bertozzi), the chick who owns the cafe they are drinking in. They get drunk with the guy who works for Caterina (who she has a thing for) named Thomas (Marcos Piacentini). Gianna is super drunk, so Margherita and Thomas walk her home. Gianna also makes an interesting discovery.
1:6 Like a Nativity Scene
This episode does end on a cliff hanger, but season 2 is out in a couple weeks. This episode ends up being a really great family love and acceptance of each other style. Umberto finally shoots his shot, but gets called into the ER before Gianna can respond. Gianna gets really upset she got kicked out (her patient coming off of a lot of drugs had complications) and gets cheered up by Diego (Alan Cappelli Goetz), the deaf custodian, who has secretly been pining after Caterina this whole time. But who comes to dinner at the parents’ house?
I’m gonna take a minute here to compare this to the Norwegian version because I have to get it out somewhere, but then I’ll talk about the season on it’s own. I think the main character in this version is more likable because of her zany fourth wall breaks, but I also think there was tonal change. In Home for Christmas, Johanne felt truly alone when she was lonely. In I Hate Christmas, it felt more like Gianna felt like she was missing out, but her family and friends were all still very close. And that might be to make it more similar to Italian culture, I’m not sure. But I know when shifting something from British to American, the asshole character is often shifted to the idiot character because we Americans don’t think assholes are funny. We do think idiots are funny. I also think this version, I Hate Christmas, did a better job of representing certain audiences that may not get as much screen time, like the suitor who used a wheelchair, Carlo (Marco Rossetti), and Diego being deaf was much better subplot than the clown dude from Home for Christmas that just didn’t speak Norwegian. I think I still related to Home for Christmas more because I’m quiet like Johanne and also I’m way more used to snow than boating and biking everywhere. Although that was really cool to watch.
Okay, now just talking about this season of I Hate Christmas. Christmas felt very commercial in this show. Like, idk why the nativity scene sounded like a show of wealth, but it did. This also felt like Gianna was maturing a lot. Imagine being 30 when you realize other people have problems you might not know about. I also think it’s interesting to have Gianna not stick things out with the rich suitor. Yes, he was intense and pushy, but he was also sweet and thoughtful. I also liked him better than the doctor, but I don’t relate to Gianna much anyway. I also enjoyed the bit about private vs public healthcare in Italy, which isn’t exactly the same as the US because our health system is weird, but a lot of people in the US do have to travel to bigger cities to get better quality care. Like where I live is very medium-small sized city that doesn’t have any major attractions for tourism or shopping or family activities, so it’s hard to attract good medical professionals because there’s not much for them to do besides work, so a lot of people travel 2-3 hours for better medical care. Sometimes they have to for specialized care, but also sometimes they choose to because they’ve had medical procedures botched by local doctors.
I’ve gotten off topic. Anyway, this show isn’t bad even though I feel like I’ve been kinda hard on it. It was weird that the song “edamame” by bbno$ was in every single episode though. I’ll still watch season 2 when it comes out because I want to compare it to Home for Christmas season 2. But maybe I Hate Christmas will last more than 2 seasons! Overall, 3 stars.

THE GAY WHITE WAY
1907 / 1908
Tumblr media
The Gay White Way is a three act musical revue (review) with music by Ludwig Englander, and book and lyrics by Sydney Rosenfeld and James Clarence Harvey. It was originally produced by Sam and Lee Shubert, staged by R.H. Burnside with dances arranged by Ralph Post.
“The story of ‘The Gay White Way’ concerns almost anything in general and hardly more than nothing in particular.” ~ Frederick Tragellia
The show was a revised and re-written version of the previous season’s hit Wine, Women and Song.

 Interpolated songs included:
"Merry-Go-Round" by Louis A. Hirsch and E. Ray Goetz
"Somebody's Been 'Round Here" by John W. Bratton and Paul West
"If You Must Make Eyes at Someone" by Leo Edwards and Matt Woodward
"Dixie Dan" by Seymour Furth and Will D. Cobb
"My Irish Gibson Girl" by Jean Schwartz and William Jerome
“Under the Matzos Tree” by Fred Fisher and Alexander Carr

About the Title: Broadway was known as ‘the Great White Way’ because of the glare of its lighted marquees. At the time, electricity used in signage was new and eye catching. The words “great” and “gay” were then used interchangeably.  In the early part of the 20th century and previous, the word gay inferred frivolity, light-hearted fun, not homosexuality, as it does today.
The revue satirized past and present Broadway hits and locations. Performers played such real-life Broadway luminaries as David Belasco, Alla Nazimova, Eddie Foy, Trixie Friganza (played by her own sister Bessie), Anna Held, Henry Anglin (portrayed by his own son J. Heron), and Margaret Anglin.
"What Is the Gay White Way anyhow?" ~ a November 1908 newspaper article
The Gay White Way - meaning Broadway - is the greatest street In the world. It is a path of pleasure and a morgue of misery, a boisterous boulevard, a mainspring of mirth. Here are the definitions given by the stars and some of the principals of "The Gay White Way":
Jefferson DeAngelis - The Gay White Way is a riot of roses and a ramble of remorse.
Blanche Ring - The Gay White Way is a condition of minds and contradiction of  theories.
Alexander Carr - The Gay White Way is the only place where every chorus girl owns an automobile.
Maude Raymond - The Gay White Way is the street on which, if you leave it for season, you will return singing "Somebody's Been Around Here Since I’ve Been Gone.”
Laura Guerite - The Gay White Way is a continuous Tiddly Om Pom. It is a hash of happiness and a goulash of gaiety.
Frank Doane - The Gay White Way is nothing more than a gigantic lemon squeezer, and many a lemon it has squeezed.
The production had its world premiere in Philadelphia on September 23, 1907.

Scenes took place in the Tenderloin, an entertainment and red-light district in the heart of Manhattan during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The area originally ran from 24th Street to 42nd Street and from Fifth Avenue to Seventh Avenue. In 1960, a Broadway musical titled Tenderloin was set in the district during the 1890s.

The Gay White Way opened on Broadway at the Casino Theatre (1404 Broadway at 39th Street) on October 7, 1907. It was the follow-up to a previous musical revue titled Wine, Women, and Song.
Tumblr media
About the Venue: The Casino Theatre was  built in 1882 for light musicals and operetta, but showed mostly vaudeville starting in 1892.  A 1905 fire necessitated much reconstruction. In February of 1930, the theatre was demolished to make room for the expanding garment district.

A sign outside the Casino lists Jefferson DeAngelis, who played George Dane in the show.

Another sign outside the Casino indicates that Alexander Carr was appearing. He played Montgomery Bernstein Brewster.

“A musical comedy stew filled with everything these theatrical cooks, Messrs. Sydney Rosenfeld and Ludwig Englander, could put in it. But one of these men, in cutting up the ingredients, must have dropped in a lemon or two. While the first helping tasted good to a large audience, the second and third act helpings needed large doses of Worcestershire sauce, and then it wasn’t altogether as palatable as had been expected from a peep in advance at the menu before the curtain went up.”
Tumblr media
On October 16th it was reported that changes were afoot at The Gay White Way.
Tumblr media
This song is not listed as part of opening night, but was probably inserted after the show opened. Featured performer Alex Carr was its author and originator.
Tumblr media
On October 26th, a gun misfired onstage injuring Blanche Ring.
Tumblr media
On November 18th, a US Senator’s ex-wife joined the cast. Claire Oddie performed under her maiden name of Claire MacDonald. Her ex-husband Tasker Oddie became the 12th Governor of Nevada in 1911 and was one of those who signed the charter for the new city of Las Vegas.
The Gay White Way closed on January 4, 1908 after 105 performances. It began a limited tour in Philadelphia, where it first opened.
Tumblr media
On May 29, 1908, The Gay White Way finally played The Gay Wooden Way, appearing at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City NJ.  Original stars Jefferson DeAngelis, Blanche Ring, and Alexander Carr were still performing in the show. The show they performed, however, looked very different than the one that opened in nearby Philadelphia in late September 1907.
