Cagliari, al via “ArteXarte”
Tumblr media
Read the full article

Summer Series: The Spectacle of Nature
The Three Founders of Botany
Botany in the West developed as a distinct discipline of scientific study in the 16th century. This is the period when the “Three Founders of Botany” Otto Brunfels, Leonhart Fuchs, and Hieronymus Bock published their great illustrated herbals. Prior to this, herbals were collections of plant knowledge passed down from ancient Greek scholars (as discussed in the previous post on the Ortus sanitatis, or “Garden of Health”) or local folk knowledge. The botany of the Aristotelian school of thought was largely forgotten in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire and through much of the Middle Ages. These ideas were kept alive through the foundation of Greek schools in Syria, and the translations of classical Greek and Roman scholars throughout the Arab world. Eventually these Arabic translations were rendered into Latin and were re-introduced to western Europe in the 13th century.
Before the 16th century, the study of plants in the West was heavily tied to the utilitarian pursuits of medicine and agriculture. Brunfels, Fuchs, and Bock were all German physicians, but their systematic and observational study of plants set them apart from other naturalists who came before them. In The Science of Describing: Natural History in Renaissance Europe historian Brian W. Ogilvie wrote:
Unlike their medieval predecessors, Renaissance naturalists condemned the inaccurate or inadequate descriptions of the natural world that had been bequeathed from antiquity. The disparity between what they saw and what they read motivated careful investigation into the variety of the created world, and prompted the development of new descriptions modeled after the old. Initially, these descriptions were pictorial, but soon a technical descriptive language was elaborated that eventually took precedence, within the community (pg. 6).
As Ogilvie notes, illustrations played a key role in communicating new scientific knowledge about plants. The development of woodcuts that could be printed at the same time as metal text revolutionized natural history books during the early modern period in Europe.
Today we are focusing on three major figures in the development of botany in the West:
Otto Brunfels was born near Mainz, Germany in 1488 or 1489 and died in 1534. His book Herbarum vivae eicones (“Pictures of Living Plants”) was published from 1530 to 1536. The book is actually remarkable because of its illustrator Hans Weiditiz (1495-c1537) because he represented plants in a naturalistic way from observational drawings. Otto Brunfels’ text itself was not very innovative because it was mostly a compilation of previous writings. Images 1-3: Illustration of Narcissus plant from the Met’s Open Access Program, title page of Herbarum vivae eicones from Iowa State University Special Collections Department’s “The Three Founders of Botany” digital exhibit, portrait of Brunfels from Wikimedia Commons.
Leonhart Fuchs was born in 1501 at Wemding in Bavaria and died in 1566. Fuchs produced the botanical masterpiece De historia stirpium published in 1542 by Isingrin of Basle. Fuchs is known for promoting new scholarship in the study of plants. De historia stirpium features hundreds of delicate woodcuts. Fuchs oversaw the production of the illustrations for his herbal, which is made evident of the woodcut of the artist and sculptor. Images 4-6 from Wikimedia Commons and the Biodiversity Heritage Library.
Hieronymus Bock was born in Heidelsheim or Heidersbach, Germany in 1498 and died in 1554. Bock was encouraged to write his herbal by Otto Brunfels. The first edition of Bock’s Kreütterbuch was printed in Strasburg by Wendel Rihel in 1539 and it did not have illustrations. Illustrated versions started appearing in 1546 and contained many woodcuts based on the illustrations found in the herbals of Brunfels and Fuchs, along with illustrations by David Kandel who is responsible for the portrait of Bock. Images 7-10 in this post are photographs I took of UW-Madison’s hand-colored copy of Kreütterbuch from 1577. Hieronymus Bock’s major advancement in botany was not from the illustrations in Kreütterbuch, but from his simple accurate written descriptions of plants based on his own observations.
I will do more in-depth posts about Leonhart Fuchs and Hieronymus Bock in the future because I had the chance to view their herbals in person at UW-Madison Special Collections this summer!

An important announcement regarding my portrayal of Clementine!
My portrayal of her has always been headcanon based while aligned with canon as much as possible with a few very subtle changes. Now, she’s canon divergent! Don’t fear, though, nothing changes TOO much in her story, it’s just a few key subtle differences while one or two are considered major differences from canon:
Christa managed to give birth to a healthy baby boy who she named Christo Jr., or CJ, for short, thus their relationship isn’t as bitter as it was in canon, and after the separation, Clementine’s been taking care of him ever since ; CJ and AJ eventually grow up very much like brothers. CJ becomes more or less the mind and logic  to AJ’s wrath and the heart and is a lot more witty and diplomatic than AJ is.
Has the initials W.C forcefully carved into her back at Howe’s ; the scar can still be seen to this day.
Clementine and Kenny / Luke were on the run from Carver and his group when the ski lodge was attacked in a winter snowstorm, and they fought walkers ... and even a walker bear, before Carver and his group manages to capture them.
Clementine shoots and kills Mike while confronting him, Bonnie and Arvo in Season Two.
She and the Cabin Group take shelter in an abandoned nuclear plant and pass through an abandoned zoo where she finds a hungry Bengal Tiger cub named Rani, so she feeds her and takes care of her, thus earning her a fiercely loyal companion for life. By the time of The Final Season, she’s in her prime.
Although this is already an established verse, in between Season Two and Season Three: A New Frontier, after her time with Kenny/Jane/Wellington/Alone, she is captured by a sinister group called Infernus Ortu, a former secret society turned death cult of anarchists and fanatics who predicted the end of the world and worship a pantheon of dark gods - harbingers of madness, ruin chaos and anarchy with the goal of “restoring the balance”. Their entire society ran on violence, cruelty, murder, humiliation, degradation, manipulation, abuse, slavery, domination, genocide and death in the name of “curing the plague” and “appeasing the gods”. After her gruesome time there, she manages to escape with CJ, AJ and Rani and for a year, she was on the run from their merciless apostles until she meets Ava of The New Frontier. Later gets trained in the arts of war and assassination by Ava and David Garcia. She worked as a medic and has had to put down turning patients. Later gets exiled from The New Frontier by David Garcia for stealing medication for a sick CJ and AJ - a relatively lighter punishment compared to hanging as a thief or her hands cut off for theft.
After her exile, she becomes a spy, beggar, thief, arsonist and child mercenary for hire turned bar owner, businesswoman, gang leader and crime boss of her own crime syndicate as the youngest, most ruthless survivor in Prescott under the alias of Hellgirl.
She meets Javier Garcia in a slaughterhouse filled with walkers and they incite a riot among the people there to which they separate, and they later meet once again just like the way they did in canon.
It’s not just James who saves her life in The Final Season after their confrontation with Abel and Lilly ... but Sophie ( @stillgcod ) as well.
Pretty much everything else in the rest of the series happens as it does in canon, only that @familiarblood’s OC’s play a major role in her life and are additional casualties to the losses suffered in the climax of The Final Season, so if you see Clementine mentioning them, don’t be surprised.
Julia gets shot in front of her son, Elijah died in the boat explosion trying to get the rest of the children to safety, Sam had her tongue cut out for mouthing off but it was done improperly so she choked to death on her own blood, Jeanne was shot in the chest by AJ on the bridge and left to be devoured, Jack broke his leg during the explosion and died in the caves, unable to make it over the river in time as he was devoured alive, and Junko was shot by Louis after Lilly forced him to for repeated disobedience. All of these deaths, including the deaths of Marlon, Brody and Mitch, scar her for life.

The following is a list of groups that Clementine has been affiliated with in her lifetime:
Motel Group - Season One - ages eight to nine.
Cabin Group - Season Two - age eleven.
Howe’s Hardware - Season Two -  Worked as a former Expansion Worker - Carver was considering making her his heir to the whole project, seeing as how out of all the Cabin Group, Clementine was the biggest threat until the Cabin Group murdered him and escaped to leave Howe’s a ruin - age eleven.
Wellington - Worked as a huntress and Patroller while attending the school within its walls - genuinely the happiest and most positive settlement she’s been involved in until it’s destruction - ages eleven to twelve.
Infernus Ortu - Season Two-A New Frontier timeskip - A former secret society turned death cult of anarchists and fanatics who predicted the end of the world and worship a pantheon of dark gods - harbingers of madness, ruin, chaos and anarchy - their goal was to “restore the balance” for there is no light without darkness, and they believed themselves to be darkness and hell incarnate and they refused to be forgotten. Their entire society runs on chaos, violence, cruelty, murder, humiliation, degradation, manipulation, abuse, slavery, domination and genocide in the name of “curing the plague” - they hae an ominous reputation. Dark and gruesome rites of passage such as human sacrifice, among other grim things, are required as an initiation to the cult. Clementine, along with AJ, were captured by the cult some time after Wellington’s destruction and she was forced to initiate and ascended to become an acolyte. AJ was intended on being one of the sacrifices to their dark and mad gods, but Clementine whisked him away and escaped before the ritual happened. Much of her journey afterward is being on the run from the cult’s bloodthirsty apostles for a very long time until The New Frontier began warring with them - aged twelve.
The New Frontier - Worked as a Supply Runner, Patroller, Huntress, Medic and Fighter. Clementine was trained by Ava and David Garcia when not healing the wounded and taking care of AJ, who were both part of the military even before the outbreak until her exile - aged twelve.
Prescott - Worked as a spy, beggar, thief, arsonist and mercenary for hire under the alias of Hellgirl while working as a actress/actor, singer and dancer at a theatre under the stage name of Clementia or Maria as a side job. Eventually became a bar owner and a businesswoman of many trades, and a gang leader of her own crime syndicate until her syndicate disbanded and she left - aged twelve to thirteen.
The Coalition - A nomadic group of rogues banded together for both the comforts and the practicality of group life. All are equal and the priority is to survive and thrive. There are no leaders, no ranks, no hierarchy. Each member is the free governor of their own life and are free to do as they wish. It’s best explained as a chaotic neutral group - they take no sides as a group - and members may be of any alignment, members can ally with other settlements or go against other settlements. The group exists for the dual purpose of being in a community for those who enjoy company yet do not wish for a leader, as well as a group that offers protection for its members and any children that may be born or brought in. Every member takes their own initiative on what way to help and whether to socialize at all, and disputes are often kept only between those involved. In addition, as disagreements over life values are inevitable in such a dynamic environment, secrecy is allowed among the members so long as these secrets don’t place the group in harm’s way. Leaving and joining are freely done with very few rules tethered to the statuses - there’s almost no chance of being turned away, and there’s no reason to force anybody to stay. Clementine and AJ often went in and out of joining and leaving the group - aged fourteen to sixteen.
Ericson’s Boarding School For Troubled Youth ( later renamed The Enlightenment ) -  Worked as a Supply Runner, Huntress / Fisherwoman, Former Second-In-Command and de-facto Leader and eventually Headmistress - aged seventeen and beyond into adulthood until she retires or dies.

#thedoors #jimmorrison #oliverstoneBuon Ascolto!
