CARRY ON (How Supernatural Should Have Ended)
AO3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/28041390
INT. VAMP NEST BARN. NIGHT.
A VAMPIRE has just impaled DEAN on a nail. It is suggested that he is about to die. There are two flickering light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The barn looks uncannily similar to the barn in which Dean and CASTIEL first met.
Dean chokes, blood pooling from his mouth. His eyes are glassy and fighting to stay open. SAM’s eyes are filled with tears--he can’t believe it.
DEAN (coughing, trying to speak through the pain) I thought— dammit, man, I thought this was our chance. A chance at a real life.
SAM (truly, genuinely, painfully) I’m sorry.
Sam’s hand hovers around the wound, as if trying to cure it. Dean shakes his head. He doesn’t want to die, but he’s past the point of no return.
DEAN (gently) Sammy— everything we’ve been through, everything we’ve lost— I’m glad it was with you.
SAM (starting to panic) No, Dean, no—
DEAN (breathing slower, but doing his best to look his brother in the eyes) I didn’t wanna die. I didn’t. Promise me you know that.
Sam nods. He can’t speak. He wishes— he prays— but no one comes. Dean’s head goes slack in Sam’s hand. His eyes are empty. He’s dead. The camera PANS slowly to Sam’s stunned face.
SAM Dean. (He waits for an answer, but none comes.) Dean, please.
Behind, there is a flutter of wings. The light bulbs blow out, glass shattering on the ground. Sam freezes, hoping against all odds—
CASTIEL (firmly, as if with all the power of Heaven on his side) No one dies today.
Without further ado, he grasps Dean’s body and pulls him off the nail. Sam winces at the sound, but Castiel does not flinch. He grips Dean by the shoulder and puts his hand over the wound. An unearthly blue light— the light of angelic Grace— flows from his hands, shines from his eyes. It is not the healing we’ve seen before— this power seems to come from the deepest part of Cas himself.
A beat. Sam stares, tense, hoping. Cas steps back, and Dean gasps.
SAM (with deep relief) Thank God.
DEAN (exhausted, yet still wise-cracking) That asshole ain’t to thank for this one, Sammy.
He sways, and Sam rushes to hold him up. Dean looks at Cas, who is, as usual, unreadable.
CAS Hello, Dean.
DEAN (softer) Cas. Jesus, you’re— you’re here.
CAS (with a slight smile, hardly believing it himself) Jack. He came for me.
Dean’s smile falters. He glances at Sam— they both feel guilty for leaving Cas behind. Castiel catches this look, and is about to speak, but winces. A curl of blue Grace floats from his mouth, winding into the air and vanishing like smoke.
SAM (concerned) Cas— are you okay?
Cas stumbles, falling to brace himself on the wall. Both Sam and Dean reach out to grab his arms on either side.
CAS (looking between them, suddenly weak) I think— I think I’m falling again.
BLACKOUT.
END OF ACT TWO
ACT THREE
INT. BUNKER - KITCHEN - MORNING
With a WIDE SHOT, we see that Dean is making eggs this time, with less spirit than the last morning. He slices peppers and onions with precision, but we can tell that he is worried, his brow furrowing as he sprinkles them in the pan.
Sam sits at the table, flipping through a huge, ancient tome. A stack of books rests next to him, waiting to be studied. Cas is not at the table, a noted absence.
Dean flips the omelet off the pan and onto a plate, setting it in front of Sam, who barely looks up.
DEAN (demanding) So?
SAM (looking up apologetically) I don’t know. I think it’s something to do with The Empty— sapping his grace, somehow. Saving you probably took a lot of mojo.
DEAN (muttering sarcastically, as usual) Great.
INT. CASTIEL’S ROOM
Castiel sleeps, his face serene. Morning light spills in through the window, the drapes gently fluttering. It’s a beautiful scene, almost like a painting. The song “THANK YOU” by Led Zeppelin begins to PLAY. PAN TO Dean in the doorway, awkwardly holding a plate of eggs and mug of black coffee. Dean’s face is softer than we’ve seen it in a long time. He hesitates, not wanting to disturb his friend.
CAS (sleepily) Dean?
The music fades, but remains in the background of the scene.
DEAN (gruffly) Mornin’, sunshine.
Dean moves to sit on the bed, a respectful distance away from Castiel. He sets the plate and mug on the bedside table. Castiel shifts into a sitting position. Dean looks at Cas, and we think he is about to speak— he thinks he is about to speak— but he remains silent. Cas merely looks back at him, at the face he thought he’d never see again. The awkwardness is mostly on Dean’s side, which is not a surprise. Castiel seems content to merely look.
DEAN (eventually) So, are you… human now? For real this time?
CAS (eyes flickering briefly) Yes. I believe so.
DEAN (gearing himself up to be angry, to find a solution) Okay. Well— we’ll fix it. Find some spare grace, find a spell to restore your grace, whatever. We always do.
CAS (sighing) Dean—
DEAN (a little heat to his voice) Dammit, Cas, let us help you. You saved my skin at the cost of your own for the hundredth time and— and I won’t let you do that. Not again. No one dies this time, remember?
CAS Dean, you’re not gonna find anything. Not this time. And I’m— (he pauses, smiling slightly. He looks calm, at peace.) I’m happy. And I can say that now, without fear. I can feel. That’s all I’ve wanted, for so long.
There is a pause. Dean swipes a hand over his face and shifts closer on the bed. There is so much left unsaid, between these two, and it hangs heavy in the air.
Dean (voice ragged) Cas. What you said. Before the Empty took you.
CAS (steadily, without hesitation) I meant it.
DEAN I’ve wanted to say it back. For so long, Cas. But I— I didn’t think— I mean, you were an angel, and there was Lisa, then Purgatory, and the Mark, and Chuck, and everything against us— it was never right, and I never thought you felt— (he breaks off, swallowing.) I never thought you could. Love me, I mean.
Cas says nothing, but laces his fingers with Dean’s. Dean looks down, stunned, then back up at Castiel’s face.
CAS But I do. Against all odds, I do.
Dean kisses him. “Thank You” by Led Zeppelin resumes. Cas pulls him in, closer. It is a beautiful, tender kiss, a movie kiss. After a moment, they break apart, still holding hands.
DEAN (slightly embarrassed, yet as unguarded as we’ve ever seen him) I love you too, Cas. I always have— you’re family.
CAS (softly, as if this moment is one he could break) So what now?
DEAN (his voice opening, finally, into hope) The rest of our lives, man. Everything that comes after.
PAN OUT, as they move into a tight, intimate hug. They’re family. The camera moves from them to the window. The curtains. The soft light outside.
INT. BUNKER - KITCHEN
Sam sits at the table, hands in his hair, still poring over the books. His plate is empty— Dean is a good cook. He is unaware of the conversation his brothers are having inside Castiel’s room. There is a CRASH. Sam sits instantly alert— there are those killer instincts. He grabs a gun and creeps slowly towards the entrance, where he finds… EILEEN. She stands at the entrance, confused, looking around. Sam keeps the gun trained on her, grief and rage and confusion flitting across his face.
EILEEN Sam?
SAM (speaking with certainty) You’re not her. You can’t be her. No one ever really comes back, no one that I— that I—
EILEEN Sam, it’s me. I promise.
She pulls out a silver knife, slashes it on her arm. She lets Sam pour some holy water on her hand. She goes through every test, staring at Sam’s face, willing him to believe her.
SAM (disbelieving) Holy crap. It’s you. It’s really you.
EILEEN (smiling) Duh.
Sam sweeps her into his arms, as if he’ll never let her go. She holds onto him just as tightly. In the same moment, they both realize how lucky they are to be here, together.
“CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON” begins to PLAY.
CUT TO MONTAGE:
Dean hunting with Charlie and Cas, watching their backs as they move through a dark tunnel.
Sam and Eileen sharing a beer as they watch a movie, the lights flickering on their faces.
Dean throwing popcorn and Monopoly pieces at Sam, chasing him around the living room as Sam raises his arms in protest.
Cas and Dean washing dishes together, bumping shoulders and hands, smiling.
Eileen holding a newborn child as Dean, Sam, and Cas all crowd around her— someone takes a picture.
PAN UP from that picture on a table to an older Sam, reading in the study while his son reads next to him, a picture of his father.
Cas playing catch in the yard with Claire, who is clearly indulging him. His brow furrows as he drops the ball again and again, Dean laughing from the porch.
An older Dean finally perfecting his pie recipe, passing the plate around the dinner table, looking pleased with himself. Contented.
Sam’s son goes off to college, and Dean takes a breath, and claps a hand on his shoulder. Smiles proudly at him.
Finally, Dean in a hospital bed, surrounded by his family. He grasps Sam’s hand, looks at Cas like he’s trying to memorize his face. They are all old. They are all satisfied with their lives. Dean smiles, closes his eyes.
BLACKOUT. Heart monitor FLATLINES.
ACT FOUR
EXT. BOBBY’S FARM - PORCH. LATE SUMMER.
The field is golden and beautiful, yet as ragged as Dean remembers it. BOBBY SINGER sits on his rocking chair, beer in hand. Dean walks up to the porch. He takes his time— he has all the time in the world, after all.
BOBBY (fondly) Took you long enough, boy.
DEAN (looking around, smiling slightly) Had a life to live.
Bobby grunts, motions for Dean to sit down next to him. He hands him a beer from the cooler.
DEAN Thought you’d be able to magic yourself one of those from thin air, up here. Service not working lately?
BOBBY More authentic this way. (pause) Heaven’s better now, actually. You saw the old version— it’s not like that up here anymore.
DEAN How’s that?
BOBBY That kid of yours: Jack. He made it so you’re not just trapped in old memories— you can go anywhere, see anyone. (another pause— he knows how much this means to Dean) Anyone.
DEAN (swallowing— this is difficult, painful) Even—
BOBBY (more gently) They’re just up the road. (He takes a sip of his beer.) You have a lot to talk out. Bad memories to work through. But you can do it, with time. Work it all out.
DEAN I hope so, Bobby. I think so.
Pause. Something catches Dean’s eye. PAN OUT to the road— to the IMPALA, shiny as the day she came off the line.
DEAN (reverently) They brought my Baby.
BOBBY (looking at him like a father looks at his son) Go. They’ll wait.
Dean smiles, as big as we’ve ever seen, like a kid on Christmas. Driving down an empty highway, with nothing to do, nowhere to go. His favorite.
Dean turns on the car, smiles nostalgically, and flips on the radio. “HEY JUDE” by The Beatles begins to PLAY.
As the song plays, Dean sees people standing by the road— old friends, old lovers, old rivals, old members of his family. There is CHARLIE, waving frantically, a grinning KEVIN by her side. There are JO and ELLEN and ASH in the Roadhouse, bickering among themselves. There are MARY and JOHN, young lovers again, looking at each other with hope in their eyes. There is PAMELA, there is JODY, LISA, JESS, countless others they’ve loved and lost. JACK even blips in to wave hello.
And then, as the song concludes, Dean pulls to a stop. At the end of the road is Cas, and Sam standing behind him, waiting. They stand on a bridge that stretches over a river. The sun is just beginning to set. Dean gets out of the car, closing Baby gently.
DEAN Miss me?
SAM (rolling his eyes fondly) Shut up.
DEAN (brief confusion) So? Where’s everyone else?
SAM They’ll be here soon.
CAS They have some more living to do.
Dean nods, and turns to gaze out over the bridge. Cas slips a hand into his, and they stand together, looking at the sunset, breaking gold and crimson rays over the water, finally calm, finally peaceful.
BLACKOUT.
CARRY ON WAYWARD SON begins to PLAY again as the credits roll.
THE END.

longing (destiel)
Tumblr media
word count: 2,500
summary: Dean is terrified when he accidentally tells Cas how he feels. Little does he know, Cas already knew...
authors note: this is my first destiel imagine, so pls go easy on me :’) it’s an idea I’ve had floating around in my mind for a while. Let me know what you think/if you would want me to write more like this!
all my works || request imagines here
Dean was about 95% sure he was going to be sick. The nausea in his gut coiled every time the words resounded inside his mind. Spoken in his own voice. Spoken only a few hours ago.
Because I’m in love with you, Cas.
Those words had actually left his mouth. After so many years of hiding, so many years of being careful to not look too long, to touch too long, to hold his tongue, to repress it. And with just one slip of his temper, he’d ruined everything.
Why did Cas have to be so reckless? If he’d just agreed to stay in the bunker, to stay put, Dean wouldn’t have been so worried about him, wouldn’t have gotten so pissed that he was willing to put himself in danger like that. He wouldn’t have said what he said. He wouldn’t be fighting off tears, alone in his room with his headphones on and the knowledge that he’d ruined his own perfectly crafted facade with seven stupid words.
Over the heavy drums in his ears, he couldn’t hear the knocking on his door.
Cas turned the knob slowly, not wanting to startle Dean. He could hear the frequencies of the music from a mile away - Dean was on the playlist he listened to when he was upset. He recognized the guitar parts of the song he was playing and it brought a small smile to his face as he entered the room, but it didn’t last long.
“Get out.” Dean’s voice was dull when he spoke. Cas’ feet stuttered a bit, but he couldn’t ignore the pull he felt anyways, underneath the words.
He’d felt that pull since that first day, in that barn. And he’d learned how to push it down, how to ignore it, or water it down enough so that he could function when they were apart.
So Cas ignored Dean’s demand and walked over, gently placing his hands on the headphones and coaxing them off his ears. Dean didn’t move to stop him, and Cas felt him shudder a bit as his fingers grazed over his cheekbones.
“I said get out Cas, and I mean it.”
“You don’t mean it. Not really.” Cas kept his voice calm as best he could. His heart was racing within his chest, pumping blood much faster than it needed to. It worried him a bit, but he could hear that Dean’s was doing that exact same thing. It comforted him as he sat down on the edge of the bed.
“Oh, I don’t? Let me try it again then, with some more feeling. Get. The Hell. OUT!” Dean’s voice changed into a familiar tone of arrogance and deflection as he yelled. Cas smiled anyways. He was familiar with this version of Dean, and he knew that it would pass as soon as it came.
“How often you forget what I am.” Cas was still calm. It caught Dean off guard entirely. He sounded like Castiel when he spoke like that, not Cas. He sounded like the old, asshole angel who had told him to show him respect, who had acted all high and mighty. Not his Cas. Not the man he loved.
“What’re you talkin’ about?”
Cas sighed a bit, scooting himself back so that he was sitting on the bed fully, his legs crossed in front of him as he turned to face Dean.
“Dean, I’m an angel. An ethereal being. And I’ve been human, and I have many human tendencies from being around you and your brother. But I am still an angel. And I still have the powers of an angel. You often forget that because I act more humane than my kin.”
“Forget that? I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about Cas, you healed me yesterday. I don’t forget that you’re a friggin’ angel. I know all about your angel radio and your wings and your halo, the whole nine.”
“Of course. You know all about my powers that are of use to you. But you don’t know all of my capabilities. You’ve never even seen my true form, how could you know everything that I can do? Take for example how attuned I am to other’s feelings of longing.”
Dean looked up at him, gears turning, trying to decipher everything while the large majority of his mind was spinning in an entirely different direction. Cas was sitting on his bed, in his room, and he’d told him he loved him and he hadn’t even brought it up. What the hell did that mean?
“Yeah, yeah like that time you found Claire. Because she missed you. I knew you could do that. So?” The confidence was gone from Dean’s voice, and there was a lump in his throat.
“I knew you were lying about wanting me to leave because I could feel it, Dean. I could feel that even though you were saying you didn’t want me here, you were feeling the opposite. You were longing for me to come and find you.”
“Yeah, well. I wanted to explain myself, you know. What I said. Because, I uh- I said it wrong. I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant that I love you. Like, you know, normal, I-care-about-you love.” He fabricated the excuse as quickly as he could.
“You are a terrible liar when you’re flustered,” Cas said blatantly.
“I’m not lying, and I’m definitely not into dudes,” he mumbled, but even Dean could hear that he didn’t really mean it. Cas sighed, reaching a hand out until it found his. Dean sucked in a breath at the contact, but he held on, squeezing against his fingers. This couldn’t be real, this was another dream. It had to be.
“I don’t understand why you are upset Dean. Did you think that I didn’t know how you felt about men?”
Dean’s eyes blew wide at that, but he didn’t pull his hand back.
“You knew? What do you mean you knew? How?” There was no point denying it anymore, his cover was royally blown anyways.
“Dean. When I went into hell to raise you, it was no easy task. By the time I got there, Alistair had tortured you so brutally that your soul was already weakened. But when you began to torture, it shattered you. Doing that, putting souls on the rack, went against everything you ever stood for. All your soul knew before then was self-sacrifice and suffering. It couldn’t handle the shift.
“And so when I found you, finally, you were in pieces. Your body was mangled, your soul tattered, in the figurative and literal sense. And I carried you in my arms. I stitched you back together with my own hands. I placed your soul back together, piece by piece. And in the process, I had to learn your make-up, what makes you, you. I know you, Dean Winchester. I know every single inch of your soul, including what, or who, it loves. Back then, your soul didn’t know me specifically, but I understood the gist.”
Dean couldn’t come up with words to describe anything he was feeling, so he just sat there in silence, in awe of the man in front of him.
“It’s nothing to be ashamed of Dean,” Cas said after a few moments, squeezing Dean’s hand in reassurance.
“So if you knew how I felt this whole time?”
“You have to understand, human emotions are not always easy for me to decipher. I have a much better handle on it now because I spent so much time as a human. It was then that I learned what it is like, to truly feel. To feel sorry, and to feel remorse and guilt and happiness and love. It wasn’t until I felt those things myself that I could understand other’s feelings. Until I could understand your feelings. And when I got my grace back, I carried those experiences with me, and when I heard your longing again, that was the first time I truly understood what it really meant. That it meant that you-”
“Wait wait wait, you heard my longing? How does that work exactly?” Dean cut him off.
Without realizing it, he leaned in towards Cas. They were close now, closer than they needed to be, but neither of them were about to move away.
“Well, it’s a bit of a mixture. I can hear it, like a frequency, but mostly I can feel it. Angels are attuned to human needs, because we are instructed to protect them. In my case, I thought that the longing you had for me was just because I was the one who raised you from perdition. We’ve been connected since then, you and I, so the feeling was to be expected. But over time I started to realize that you longed for me in a different way. It felt different. Sam longed for me sometimes, when you were both in trouble, or my services were needed, or he hadn’t seen me in quite some time. But it was meak, and it faded away gradually each time.
“But you... Dean your longing was unbreakable. It never rested, never ceased. Even when you would sleep I could feel it. And the strange thing was, it didn’t matter where I was, or how far away. In fact, the farther I got from you the more you seemed to long for me. As if you wanted me closer to you.”
“I did. I do.” Dean said the words without thinking, his other hand coming around to grasp Cas’, as if he could hold him there.
“I never wanted to leave. It was always out of necessity. I don’t like being away from you. It hurts me, to feel you needing me when I can’t be there.”
Cas looked down at their hands, his thumb brushing against the long scar down the middle of Dean’s palm.
“Cas, if you felt that way... and you knew that I felt this way, why didn’t you say anything?”
“The same reason you didn’t I suppose. I didn’t think you’d feel the same. You see, I think I loved you before I knew what it meant. I thought this connection, this love I have for you, I thought that it came from our journey back to earth. It was treacherous, and I had to carry you for several days. That was bound to leave a mark on both of us.”
Dean was trying to listen, but his head would only let him repeat one word. Love. Love. Love.
“You love me?”
“You know the answer to that Dean, you needn’t ask.”
“Say it Cas. I want to hear you say it.” Dean felt as if he was going to explode.
“I love you, Dean.”
“I love you too.”
They weren’t sure who moved first - it didn’t really matter. All that mattered was that their lips ended up pressed against each other. Dean’s hands ended up clutching onto the collar of his trench coat, pulling him as close as he could get him.
Cas was more hesitant, unsure of himself. His lips were soft against Dean’s, letting him do the work as he moved them. With gentle hands, he reached out to touch Dean’s side, placing both his hands along his ribs. The gentle brush of his fingertips set Dean’s skin on fire, every nerve ending ablaze. How long had he waited for this?
“Cas it’s okay, you can touch me, it’s okay,” he murmured, breaking the kiss and putting his forehead against Cas’, trying to will himself to slow down.
“I’ve... Dean, I’ve never kissed someone that I cared about. Someone that I love. I don’t want to mess it up.” Cas’ voice was soft, his breathing heavy.  Dean leaned back just a inch, just enough for blue iris to connect with green ones. Both their pupils were blown wide.
“Cas, there is no way in hell that you could ever mess this up, not with me, okay? We’ll take it slow, one step at a time.” He brushed a calloused finger across Cas’ cheek, leaning in to press another soft kiss to his lips.
“You’ll teach me?”
“Of course baby. I gotta say though, it takes a lot of practice. You’ll have to be very dedicated.” Dean grinned his most mischievous grin.
“Okay. I can do that.” Cas’ voice was very serious, and he nodded as he accepted Dean’s words.
“God I love you,” Dean chuckled, pulling his angel in for one more kiss. “I think it’s time we both get some rest.” He wasn’t sure his brain could take anymore new sensations or emotions without a good night’s sleep.
“Right, I’ll leave you to sleep then.” Cas went to stand up, but Dean grabbed his hand before he could.
“Cas, what do you usually do when Sam and I sleep?” He’d never asked before, always just assumed he laid in bed like the rest of the population.
“I watch over both of you. I usually end up close to your door. Your ‘longing’ can be quite loud at night. It quiets down a bit when you sense that I’m near. It seems to comfort you.”
“Would you want to, uh, stay in here tonight? I bet it would be quieter if you were in here with me,” Dean offered.
“That’s an interesting theory. I wouldn’t mind to try it.” Cas shrugged a bit, standing up. Dean watched as he took a few steps over, grabbing the desk chair and pulling it out before sitting down formally.
“Cas, I didn’t me-” Dean started to ridicule him but stopped himself, reminding himself of his words spoken just a second before.
“I meant with me, Cas. Take off your coat, and lose the pants as long as you’ve got somethin’ on underneath.”
Cas did as he was instructed, a look of confusion still on his face as Dean turned the covers down.
“Now lock the door and c’mere.”
Cas approached the opposite side of the bed, locking the door with a flick of his fingers and following Dean’s example of climbing under the covers. It was warm and cozy to have Dean so close to him - the bed wasn’t that large after all.
And Cas’ heart fluttered a bit when he felt Dean move, taking Cas’ arm gently and moving it out of the way so that he could nuzzle up to his side. Dean’s arm wrapped around him as he rested his head against Cas’ chest, breathing him in.
It took Cas a moment to decipher where he should place his arm, but he settled on wrapping it around Dean’s shoulders, hugging him closer to him. Dean’s muscles relaxed at his touch.
“I could get used to this. Sorry I’m such a buzz kill.”
“I would rather you sleep. You’re grumpy in the mornings when you don’t get your rest.”
“Hey, be nice,” Dean pouted a bit, sitting up so he could see Cas’ face. Cas smiled at him, and he leaned in very carefully, placing a soft kiss to Dean’s lips.
“You’re getting better at that already,” Dean offered him a soft smile, unwilling to look away from him. But eventually his exhaustion caught up with him, and he laid his head back down on Cas’ chest, letting the cadence of his breathing calm his racing heart.
“Go to sleep Dean. I’ll watch over you,” was the last thing he heard that night, and he slept in peaceful, blissful dreams.

ABOUT HANS ZIMMER
German-born composer Hans Zimmer is recognized as one of Hollywood’s most innovative musical talents‚ having first enjoyed success in the world of pop music as a member of The Buggles. The group’s single Video Killed the Radio Star became a worldwide hit and helped usher in a new era of global entertainment as the first music video to be aired on MTV. Zimmer entered the world of film music in London during a long collaboration with famed composer and mentor Stanley Myers‚ which included the film MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE. He soon began work on several successful solo projects‚ including the critically acclaimed A World Apart‚ and during these years Zimmer pioneered the use of combining old and new musical technologies. Today‚ this work has earned him the reputation of being the father of integrating the electronic musical world with traditional orchestral arrangements. A turning point in Zimmer’s career came in 1988 when he was asked to score RAIN MAN for director Barry Levinson. The film went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture of the Year and earned Zimmer his first Academy Award Nomination for Best Original Score. The next year‚ Zimmer composed the score for another Best Picture Oscar recipient‚ DRIVING MISS DAISY‚ starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. Having already scored two Best Picture winners‚ in the early ’90s Zimmer cemented his position as a pre-eminent talent with the award-winning score for THE LION KING. The soundtrack has sold over 15 million copies to date and earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Score‚ a Golden Globe‚ an American Music Award‚ a Tony and two Grammy Awards. In total‚ Zimmer’s work has been nominated for 7 Golden Globes‚ 7 Grammys and seven Oscars for RAINMAN‚ GLADIATOR‚ THE LION KING‚ AS GOOD AS IT GETS‚ THE PREACHERS WIFE‚ THE THIN RED LINE‚ THE PRINCE OF EGYPT and THE LAST SAMURAI. With his career in full swing‚ Zimmer was anxious to replicate the mentoring experience he had benefited from under Stanley Myers’ guidance. With state-of-the-art technology and a supportive creative environment‚ Zimmer was able to offer film-scoring opportunities to young composers at his Santa Monica-based musical ’think tank.’ This approach helped launch the careers of such notable composers as Mark Mancina‚ John Powell‚ Harry Gregson-Williams‚ Nick Glennie-Smith and Klaus Badelt. In 2000 Zimmer scored the music for GLADIATOR‚ for which he received an Oscar nomination‚ in addition to Golden Globe and Broadcast Film Critics Awards for his epic score. It sold more than three million copies worldwide and spawned a second album “Gladiator: More Music From The Motion Picture‚” released on the Universal Classics/Decca label. Zimmer’s other scores that year included MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2‚ THE ROAD TO EL DORADO and AN EVERLASTING PIECE‚ directed by Barry Levinson. Some of his other impressive scores include PEARL HARBOR‚ THE RING‚4 films directed by Ridley Scott; MATCHSTICK MEN‚ HANNIBAL‚ BLACK HAWK DOWN and THELMA & LOUISE‚ Penny Marshall’s RIDING IN CARS WITH BOYS AND A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN‚ Quentin Tarantino’s TRUE ROMANCE‚ TEARS OF THE SUN‚ Ron Howard’s BACKDRAFT‚ DAYS OF THUNDER‚ Smilla’s SENSE OF SNOW and the animated SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON for which he also co-wrote four of the songs with Bryan Adams‚ including the Golden Globe nominated “Here I Am.” At the 27th annual Flanders International Film Festival‚ Zimmer performed live for the first time in concert with a 100-piece orchestra and a 100-piece choir. Choosing selections from his impressive body of work‚ Zimmer performed newly orchestrated concert versions of GLADIATOR‚ MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2‚ RAIN MAN‚ THE LION KING‚ and THE THIN RED LINE. The concert was recorded by Decca and released as a concert album entitled "The Wings Of A Film: The Music Of Hans Zimmer." In 2003‚ Zimmer completed his 100th film score for the film THE LAST SAMURAI‚ starring Tom Cruise‚ for which he received both a Golden Globe and a Broadcast Film Critics nomination. Over the past year‚ Zimmer has scored Nancy Meyers’ comedy SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE‚ the animated Dreamworks film‚ A SHARK’S TALE (featuring voices of Will Smith‚ Renee Zellweger‚ Robert De Niro‚ Jack Black and Martin Scorsese)‚ and most recently‚ Jim Brooks’ SPANGLISH starring Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni (for which he also received a Golden Globe nomination). His projects also include Paramount’s WEATHERMAN starring Nicolas Cage‚ Dreamworks’ MADAGASCAR and Warner Bros.’ BATMAN BEGINS. Zimmer’s additional honors and awards include the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in Film Composition from the National Board of Review‚ and the Frederick Loewe Award in 2003 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
