Do you see Tom Riddle as a pretty boy or a handsome man?

Perhaps I'm missing some sort of modern slang as to what each means, but I'll reply literally. Anonymous (or others) feel free to correct/enlighten me if I stray off topic.

I don't see why he can't be both, especially considering that we get to experience young Tom as well as older Volmemort in the books.

He was a pretty, good looking boy when he was younger, and remained a handsome man for a while, until his magical experiment and the Horcrux making caught up with his appearance. I still HC that Bellatrix finds him more attractive in his gaunt, skeletal appearance than before, but that's probably just me.

In the fourth book, while he's still a semi-human creature, before the ritual that gives him back his body, Frank, the gardener of his family estate, demands he turns and "faces him like a man!"

"But I am not a man," Voldemort replies, "I am so much more than a man [but why not, I will face you]"

What Voldemort might have meant with that is up for debate. Perhaps all he means is that he is a man (as in biological male who identifies with the male gender), but he is also so powerful and, to use the expression Voldemort himself loved as a child, so SPECIAL, he's also in a class of human on his own.

Also, later on we find out that he has fathered a daughter, so apparently he does have normal urges that men have. He's not above lust, sex and even maybe being fond of another human (Bellatrix and Delphi).

In addition, when Dumbledore and Harry make it to the cave that Voldemort chose as the hiding place for the Locket Horcrux, we find out that Voldemort values magical power above all, and that HArry's magic, that of a young, average (maybe even a little beyond average), won't even register in his book compared to Dumbledore's. To me this seems to suggest that Voldemort is quite happy to be "old", "mature" and, to his eyes, "wise". And it's not hard to see why he thinks this. He used to be a little boy at the bottom of the social ladder. He might have been "pretty", something that, in older times, was associated with "good families" but he was still an orphan people just ignored or even pitied. Now he's surrounded mostly by younger witches and wizards, and he's their leader.

To sum up until now, I think Voldemort is happy to be a man of a certain age and standing, rather than a boy.

However, he wants to be more than that. He wants to be special, extraordinary. And not just with his deeds, but also with his appearance. He doesnt even want people to speak the name he chose for himself, a name that he likes and is proud of, as it sums up his grandiosity and goal in life (to flee death). Altering his appearance and making it bizarre and unique is also part of this need. By looking like a snake, he's finally special in every way: the way he acts, looks, talks, they're all unique to Lord Voldemort. He's not just a man, any man, he's The Dark Lord.

But I digress. The key for me is a (common, I think) headcanon, where Voldemort suffers from some flavour of body dysmorphia as a young boy. I'm not an expert on the condition, so by no means do I claim to know what I'm saying, just sharing how I feel about him. I think he DOESN'T LIKE BEING ATTRACTIVE, especially after he finds out he looks identical to his father. To some degree he finds his "pretty appearance" useful, since, sad truth be told, we're all inclined to treat a good looking person better and pay more attention to them, and in his early days of near starvation and abuse this was useful. But he hates it, deep down, as he hates everything about himself from those days.

Not only that, but he actually doesn't find himself attractive. He thinks he's too pale, his hair annoys him because it's too curly and needs some work in order to look presentable, his cheekbones are too high, he's too thin and boney, and the list goes on and on with things only he finds weird and unattractive. All part of his deep-seated self loathing that is in the root of all his actions, covered up with illusions f grandeur.

And so he sheds every bit of his old appearance that's possible to change, from his eye colour to the shape of his nose. In fact, now I think of it, in Goblet of Fire he says he'll be "Settling for his old body for a while", suggesting he's planning on further transformations in the future, when he has more time with Harry dead.

TLDR: to us, semi-biased readers, he's both. In his own eyes, he's neither.

Also this gave me an idea for a minific, so I may post a drabble at some point, inspired by this.

I can't say exactly why but I imagine Voldemort as a father who demands the best in terms of study, while he doesn't care much about the rest, perhaps only a little about education, because after all he can't be the father of a savage .

nicknames for the next gen kids

Albus:

Al - only Scorpius and Rose get the honour of calling him this

Alby - James made it up as a joke and it kinda stuck (family members only)

Albussy - is the family wifi password.

Sev/Sevvy - Lily called him these when she was a baby/toddler

School Bus - James. Just James.

Scorpius:

Scorp - Albus couldn’t be bothered to say his whole name and now half of his friends just call him Scorp

Scor - Albus couldn’t be bothered with the extra ‘p’ on the end of Scorp. this nickname didn’t stick, but it’s still used occasionally

Scorpion King - used in the alternate reality and it kinda slaps tbh (also used by Rose at the end but just no.)

Malfoy the Unanxious - by himself

Scorpius the Dreadless - again, by himself

Corpse - kinda in his name ig?? and he’s pale asf

Jack Frost - the hair.

Rose

Rosie - Ron and Hermione think it’s cute (which it is oml) but Rose hates it

Posie - Scorpius teases her with it when they’ve become better friends later on

Scorp’s Girlfriend - used by literally everyone at Hogwarts bc they think they’re dating when they’re really not.

Hermione Granger 2.0 - usually comes from Albus but sometimes Ron joins in. this is not appreciated by Rose.

Jamesy Wamesy - Albus wanted revenge for ‘School Bus’

Jamesy - kinda a better form of ‘Jamesy Wamesy’ which Teddy picked up

All The Marauders In One - Harry receives this comment on James’s report card VERY often (always from McGonagall)

Lily - no one can be bothered with the whole Lily-Luna thing at this point

Lils - Harry started it bc he wanted to separate his child from his mother and he obviously didn’t call his mum Lils

Ted - James, like Albus, was too lazy to complete Teddy’s name in a sentence

Edward - his full name so technically not a nickname but let’s just pretend it is

T - Albus got even more lazy than before and only wanted to say one letter

Teddy Bear - James got drunk. or high. or both.

Parent!Voldemort AU where V would be alive and actually raise Delphini.

It could be a world where he's already won the war and now he left every boring political things to his followers (Lucius would be gladly running the government for him). And then he's gonna travel around the world with his daughter, they explore magical mysteries and practice deep dark magic together. Voldemort would teach Delphini everything with his knowledge, bring her to meet many ancient magical creatures (dragons, werewolves, giants, shirens, vampires, ancient elves, ...) and learn everything she wants from them, from him.

He wouldn't do this parent things very well as first. He would be a bit silly, bad father while struggling with that little girl. Like, he often makes Delphini go fighting with enemies beyond her skills. When he didn't notice, she could be fed to the dragons, almost be drowned after winning against the shirens, passed out when practicing astray magic (of course she would learn that, she's a Black!), won against a pack of giants but almost being buried by their collapsed bodies. But Voldemort would always run forward to his daughter and save her at the right time. He learned from those incidents and took more care of Delphini time by time (in his own way of love). And Delphini has both Black blood and Slytherin blood in her, she's very stubborn so she could survive after all of those. Voldemort would also make various delicious meals from many cultures for her (he is a master chef cause he learned many things and had to survive on his own in his first travel around the world, no one can convince me otherwise). Their father - daughter bond would increase during their world journey. It would be wholesome but sometimes heartbroken (cause you know how Voldemort thought about love 💀).

It doesn't need to be a Voldemort!win AU, the war could be still happening but he wouldn't show his face or still hide his identity, to raise Delphini and make her become a incredibly inhumanly powerful witches who would serve as his right hand in the war. I just wanna see more Voldemort and Delphini interaction, my sweet little girl and my beloved old man 🥹🥹🥹. And it would be more interesting if Bellatrix was included there.

Although I have always imagined Voldemort as someone who did not care about the biological sex of a possible child, I still think that he was happy to have a daughter, because the resemblance to Bellatrix was more accentuated and the idea of having someone similar to Bella he liked it a lot.
