A CIDADE DE NORWICH
Norwich é uma cidade com cerca de 150 mil habitantes, localizada a 160 km a nordeste de Londres. No passado, ela foi capital da tribo Iceni, um assentamento localizado perto da aldeia de Caistor St. Edmund a 8 km do centro atual da cidade. Após uma revolta liderada por Boudica em torno de 60 d.C., a área de Caistor tornou-se a cidade de Venta Icenorum. O assentamento romano caiu em desuso em torno de 450 e os anglo-saxões se estabeleceram no local da atual cidade entre os séculos V e VII, fundando Norwich. A cidade antiga era um centro próspero para comércio e comércio, mas, em 1004, foi invadida e queimada por Swein Forkbeard, rei viking da Dinamarca.

O Castelo de Norwich foi fundado logo depois da conquista normanda da Inglaterra em 1066. 1. CATEDRAL DE NORWICH
A Catedral de Norwich foi construída de calcário, entre 1096 e 1145, e é dedicada à Santíssima Trindade. O pináculo da catedral, que mede a 96 metros, é o segundo mais alto da Inglaterra.

A Catedral de Norwich tem o segundo maior claustro na Inglaterra, apenas superado pela Catedral de Salisbury, onde fica uma das cópias originais da Magna Carta. No centro, um jardim com pedras formando um labirinto.

Entre alguns dos destaques da catedral estão: uma seleção de 61 misericórdias dos séculos XV, XVI e XIX; na capela de São Lucas está uma pintura do final do século XIV conhecida como “Despenser Retable”; e uma fonte batismal de cobre, formada a partir de tigelas utilizadas anteriormente para produzir chocolate na fábrica Rowntree, que fechou em 1994.

2. RIVERSIDE WALK
Um dos lugares mais gostosos para passear em Norwich é na calçada (Quay Side) que fica ao lado do rio Wensum, que corta a cidade. A vista do rio e dos edifícios laterais a partir da Eye Bridge St é incrível e o local se tornou um dos mais fotografados. Passeando pela lateral do rio, aproveite também para conhecer a Cow Tower (Endereço: Cotman Fields, Norwich NR1 4AA | Horários: diariamente de 9h às 17h | Entrada: gratuita), uma torre medieval de artilharia, construída em alvenaria por volta do ano 1300 para defender a cidade de possíveis invasões.

3. ELM HILL
Elm Hill é uma histórica rua de paralelepípedos, com muitos edifícios que remontam o período Tudor (1485-1603). A rua, criada no século XII, é uma gracinha e, na minha opinião, a mais charmosa da cidade. Ela se estende da Igreja de São Pedro Hungate, encontra a Princes Street e vai até a esquina com a Wensum Street. Durante os séculos XV e XVI, Elm Hill era uma das mais importantes vias comerciais da cidade.

4. CASTELO DE NORWICH MUSEU E GALERIA DE ARTE
Norwich Castle é uma fortificação medieval, localizada no alto de uma colina a pedido de William, o Conquistador, logo depois da conquista normanda da Inglaterra em 1066. Na área circundante ficam belos e bem cuidados jardins, conhecidos como Castle Gardens (Jardins do Castelo).

The Despenser Reredos at Norwich Cathedral is one of the finest examples of late fourteenth century church art anywhere in Europe. It is named for Henry le Despenser, the bishop who commissioned it in 1382. It shows scenes from Christ's passion, resurrection and ascension.
While many such works of art were destroyed during the Reformation and the English Civil War, this one survived because the wood panel was flipped over and used as a table top. This was probably done by the Puritan iconoclasts because one of the boards in the panel was removed (see the blank areas at the top of each scene) and legs were added at the four corners. For about 200 years the table was used in a workshop within the cathedral. In 1847 something rolled under the table and the person retrieving the object looked up and saw the paintings. The missing parts were reconstructed and the central painting was restored in 1958.
