My favourite way for Dick to be written is him just. Not swearing. He just doesn't do it. He got so used to the Robin persona, saying things like "gee whiz" and "holy guacamole Batman!" and "aw, shoot" that he just. Doesn't swear. He's a full grown man in his late twenties but he stubs his toe and shouts "sugar!!", you jump out to surprise him and he goes "jeez louise!" or something. Everyone makes fun of him for it, but it's not a choice anymore, that is just Genuinely his brain's first reaction now. There is a running bet/joke with the Titans to try and get Dick to react to something with a swear word, and they have not managed it yet.

mini batman meta - superman/batman: world's finest

okay so i'm reading batman/superman: world's finest issue #2 right? and we have this panel of dickie saying he's worried about superman [among other things] "even if batman isn't"

here ^^

but then we get the low-down from "count frankenstein" [as robin called him] and we see negative man do his thing and---

bats looks TERRIFIED, and it reminds me of battinson's line in the batman (2022) -- “I never thought I’d feel fear like that again,” he says. “I thought I’d mastered all that. I mean, I’m not afraid to die. I realize now there’s something I haven’t got past. This fear of ever going through any of that again. Of losing somebody I care about.” -- it's especially poignant in the movie because it shows that apart from trying to push the persona of bruce wayne away, the reason bruce was so cold to alfred was that he was afraid [source]. Robin probably only assumed that Bats didn't feel worried was that Bruce was supressing the fear, it's an established part of his characterisation at this point that he's not open with his emotions. This makes even more sense for him in-character for emotions that make him feel afraid or uncomfortable -- being afraid of losing superman and being afraid of that fear and feeling like he did when he lost his parents again [if that makes sense??]

what i'm building to here is, we see bruce terrified, no longer stoic, and it's great.

Hard to tell what was real now. So quiet, why so quiet, need noise, sound, something, was that the door? Don’t move, stay quiet, no motion...if no sign of consciousness, maybe they’d leave him alone. Nightwing's Log, Night 7 Supplemental

Alfred said something the other day about me being a lot like Bruce. I told him he was full of it, but I'm pretty sure we both know he's right. I got banged up pretty bad in that fall onto the mass grave, but what choice do I have but pushing through it? I'm taking care of myself, I swear, I just. Don't have time to sit around and recover the way I probably should. And the fact that I can hear Bruce saying the same thing in my head just underlines what Alfred was saying.

But at the same time I'm nothing like Bruce at all. Bruce was a leader and I'm. I can be, sure, but not…not here. I dunno about the others, but it almost feels wrong trying to step up into that spot. We're a team, and okay, a team needs a leader in theory, but…I'm not sure it should be me. I'm not even sure the others look at me like that in any case.

And then there's the audio log in the last cache I found. It was about me. Or at least, about a dream Bruce had about me. And about some things he wanted to say to me. Things I wish I'd known. We never really talked, after I left…not like we should have. To hear him say that…to say that Batman needed to be more like Nightwing, that was…I never imagined he'd even think that, let alone say it.

And he said he was proud of me…

He called me his son…

I wish we could've had that talk. Because he was wrong about one thing in that log.

I do still need him. We all do.

But we gotta keep moving. Hopefully the four of us are enough to fill the shoes he left behind. I know just me, on my own? I'm not.
