while we're talking about older queer/trans cinema, a shoutout to Different For Girls (1996) starring Steven Mackintosh (as Kim) and Rupert Graves as her cis boyfriend (who you'll recognise as Lestrade from Sherlock)
anyway obvious caveats for a trans woman played by a cis actor, but this is a tender and understated british film with a lot of humour and (after some police brutality because hey, you can't do London Metropolitan police rep without portraying the reality) it has a happy ending, big surprise for trans 90s cinema
also Miriam Margolyes being kickarse as usual as Kim's boss
and you can watch it on youtube

i do appreciate how natural how the misgendering is. i know some people get very triggered by it but for me i've just gotten used to it and lord knows i used to misgender myself sometimes. it happens. it can be simply annoying to downright traumatizing for some people but i still appreciate it

ngl I'm not a fan of how the very necessary discussion of how autistic girls (and many poc for that matter, not that we usually remember this) often end up masking hard due to the pressure to "be ladylike" or "not be too angry" and therefore end up being seen as "very polite" and "mature for your age" and so on and so forth is morphing into being less about how social pressures may impact how autism presents and more about saying "so there's Girl Autism and there's Boy Autism and Girl Autism makes you nice and polite and pleasant but Boy Autism makes you gross and annoying and rude and offputting and no it's not ableist at all to say that being overly excitable or trying to get a turn to talk when you don't know when your turn is or struggling with arbitrary rules is rude and annoying because Girl Autism exists uwu"

OH MY FUCKING GOD DIFFERENT FOR GIRLS IS ON IMDBTV
like, this was probably one of the first movies I ever watched where it made me realize you didn't have to be the gender you were assigned at birth and it was funny and real and also was one of those films that made me realize i do like romance as long as its not stereotypical straight nonsense and it was heart wrenching and takes me back to when I was like 11 and illegally downloading the weirdest, most random movies off the internet and just uuuuuurgh
i'm gonna watch it now. i'm honestly curious to see if it'll hit the same way with how i remember it, but i am so excited to watch this film again. i love it so much and it always introduced me to The Only Ones
