Creating an IF: Agency
Welcome to the first entry in my blog series about my journey as a novice Interactive Fiction (IF) writer. With a background in game design and experience as a tabletop RPG Dungeon Master, I've always been intrigued by the unique storytelling potential of IF, particularly the concept of agency.
The Novel vs. The Game vs. The IF
In traditional novels, a significant amount of time is devoted to fleshing out the protagonist's motivations, backstory, and personality. This groundwork is essential for readers to understand and empathize with the characters' actions. In contrast, video games focus extensively on creating immersive scenes, allowing players to visualize and interact with the story's setting and characters without relying on the player's imagination.
Interactive Fiction, however, operates on a different level. The medium doesn't necessarily require extensive character backstories or immersive graphical environments. Instead, IF thrives on the absence of these elements, offering unique storytelling opportunities through what is arguably the most powerful tool in gaming: Agency.
Using Agency as a Storytelling Tool
Interestingly, restricting agency can be an effective narrative technique. This approach works best when a certain level of agency has already been established. By gradually limiting choices or disabling options, you can effectively convey feelings of powerlessness or helplessness. This method creates tension and elicits emotional responses from the player.
For example, imagine wanting to portray a character grappling with depression or a lack of motivation. Present the player with multiple positive actions that the character knows they should undertake, but can't bring themselves to do. You might present options like:
Do the dishes
Go for a walk
Take a shower
Go back to bed
Except, some of these options are grayed out, unavailable. This subtle storytelling device powerfully conveys the character's emotional state without explicitly stating it. It allows players to project their own experiences and interpretations onto the character, creating a more personalized and immersive narrative.
Agency: Not Just a Novel with Choices
It's crucial to remember that IF is not simply a novel with added choices. Approaching it as such can lead to a narrative that feels like herding cats, trying to manage unwieldy choice permutations, or, worse, neglecting the essence of player agency. IF requires a unique balance, a careful orchestration of choices that both guide the narrative and allow for meaningful player interaction.
In summary, understanding and effectively utilizing agency can transform your IF into an engaging, emotionally resonant experience. It's about offering choices that matter, that shape the narrative and reflect the player's influence on the story world. So, embrace the power of agency and see where it can take your storytelling in the realm of Interactive Fiction.

More Blender experiments! This is my first toon render, and first time using the new and improved grease pencil tools. Additionally, all the animation is procedural and I even used drivers for the first time--albeit in the most simplistic possible way. I tried sculpture painting which let me add color to my froggy sculpt without topologizing and unwrapping.
The frog character concept comes from this book my friend is working her way through.

The ART of captions (and hashtags)
Tumblr media
Who knew captions would be so integral?
In Becoming Filipino's distribution process, Dekada Productions have formulated a strategy, plan and timeline, in marketing the anthology to the public, particularly Filipino people. We had DP blasts, plug-ins, a whole dedicated TikTok page for reactions, among other things.
Becoming Filipino is live. Check it out here for yourself!
Although not my main role, I've taken the task to create captions to create fun and witty captions to intrigue viewers into clicking and interacting with our site. While it all looks fun and games, with the heavy use of emojis, the witty roleplay of a #RegisteredFilipino who had just applied through PCS (our site) and as a government worker working under PCS, along with the excessive and overkill of hashtags...
I say, the ART of captions (and hashtags) are often overlooked.
Not only captions, this includes copywriting and even marketing as a whole!
THIS is digital storytelling.
While we think of digital storytelling as still and moving pictures, digital storytelling encompasses so much more than that...including, just words.
So much thought and knowledge is necessary in creating relevant but creative captions that help gather specific target audiences, and as well, making our work (our product or service) actually interesting.
While the work itself is good, how is it going to actually create traction from their first experience or acknowledgement of it. How are you going to make it...watchable without having to yet watch it?
Just through words of advertisement, there is a story to be unfolded.
This is digital storytelling.

SEM 601: Lightroom
Use some of the pictures from our shared folder, and play with Lightroom presets. Using Adobe's standard presets, try giving the same picture different tones. Try a few different presets, and/or the same preset on multiple pictures to see the differences.
When finished, post at least three of the pictures here as a Photo post. In the caption, make sure to let us know which presets you used. Tags: Office of Doc Malone; SEM 601; Lightroom

I asked Matt to design me a monster. He drew this and said, "Make it wiggle and rain shrimp." I like to think I met his artistic vision.
This features fur particles (not the dynamic kind), rigid bodies, and Eevee. Eevee definitely isn't as capable as Cycles, but it can render without crashing the laptop. It's nice to see my animations at full speed!
By the way, the material for the shrimp is entirely procedural. Behold my chaotic node tree:

Basically, Death Island is like Total Drama but the teens don't get eliminated, they die, horribly. Whoever loses the challenge, dies. There will be 15 challenges for 16 contestants, and only one lives the torture.

The writing might not be the best, but I'm hoping to work more on it. :)
