Hey! I have started reading the books and I saw in the final few novels, Drake and Wenna have a daughter called Loveday? Am I correct? How old is Loveday by her first book appearance? Is it possible she could be born / introduced in this final season?
Same person who asked the previous thing about Loveday: what is she like in the books? Thank you!
Yes, they have a daughter called Loveday, who is born in (if I recall correctly) 1802 - ie, two years after their wedding.
We first meet her in The Miller’s Dance, which takes place 1813-15, and she’s introduced thus:
Geoffrey Charles was walking beside the old pond of Trenwith when he saw a small procession wending its way up the weed-grown drive. In the lead by a few paces on an elderly mare was a thin dark man; behind him on two ponies a dark woman in a long grey linen riding cloak and a girl of about twelve, hair in pig-tails, bare legs showing under a dimity skirt.
A page later we get a little more:
Loveday had the fine skin and dark hair of both her parents, but was of an age when child charm had gone and the looks of adolescence were yet a little way off.
She appears or is mantioned a handful of times in The Miller’s Dance and then, briefly, in Bella Poldark, where she attends Esther Carne’s marriage to Ben Carter (Esther being the daughter of another Carne brother, and therefore Loveday’s cousin). In that book, she’s described as being ‘tall and spectacled but not so elegant [as Morwenna]’, and she’s about 18 here. She’s also a bridesmaid for Clowance’s second wedding, in the same book.
But I don’t think she ever actually has a line of dialogue. She’s essentially a cipher: she’s there as proof that Morwenna was finally able to heal enough from her abuse to have a ‘true marriage’ to Drake. As a character, we know nothing about her.
So could she be born at the end of season 5? Possibly. They’ve said, I believe, that they’re going up to 1802, and certainly a birth - or at least the announcement of a pregnancy - would be a happy note to end on for a couple that has been such a focus of the show. Unless they’re aiming for the whole of 1802 (ie, a three-year period) I don’t think they can really go as far as the birth, though. But we’ll see.
