Interviewer: When the boys find the direwolf puppies, the audience starts to think that maybe these pups serve as a metaphor for something else… the family and particularly the children.
George: They’re the family sigil, the direwolf is on the Stark banner, so there’s clearly some significance to that, at least in the mind of these people who are medieval. As to whether there’s any real significance to it, I play it both ways. I like some ambiguity in my fiction.
Interviewer: Is that why Lady gets executed? Was it a way to pull away from that a bit?
George: Yeah, it was definitely a way of casting it in question, but also of advising the reader that anything can happen.

asoiaf modern au where the stark kids still have wolves and it’s a real problem and animal control keeps getting called on them. shaggy dog has ripped out a kids throat.
theon also dresses the same in this au as he does in the books because he likes being different. and he’s still a hostage of the starks.

so we all know that the got show wildly underutilised the direwolves and robbed them of all magical significance, which annoys me because the starks finding the direwolves in chapter one of got seems to be a direct counter to the existential threat posed by the others in the prologue. they don't just mark the beginning of political upheaval, but also the return of magic to westeros. like daenerys' dragons, they are the magical counterbalance to the evil power of the others - one of the many incarnations of ice in the prophesised song of ice and fire.
having said that, they also have personal roles for each stark. the nominal determinism of the pups has been well analysed but i think you could read thoroughly into the behaviour of each one - for instance, nymeria connecting arya to westeros and her identity as a stark warg and summer matching bran's weird-girl green-seer energy.
to cut a long-winded post short, however, i think ghost is going to have to die in order for jon to be resurrected. i hate the thought as much as you likely do - ghost has been a close companion of jon and the reader throughout the series but unfortunately, that's what makes the sacrifice so meaningful. i do think jon's resurrection will require a sacrifice: it won't be like the show where jon sits up, is sad for five minutes and then hops off the dissection table to swing a sword about.
one of the many things ghost's name seems to foreshadow is jon's resurrection. not only that, but theon suggests the albino wolf is bound for death, saying he will "die faster than the others". however, when jon retorts "this one belongs to me", he takes responsibility for ghost's life. this is what all the starks do for their pups, but in jon the rescue is especially marked: he turns back to find ghost and whilst he is the runt of the litter, under jon's care he grows to be bigger than his siblings. jon gives ghost life and it makes a lot of symbolic sense for that life to be eventually returned. moreover, ghost with his weirwood colouring represents the old gods of the north - jon even muses that he might be some kind of agent of them. i don't think the lord of light alone can bring jon back: it has to be a rebirth of ice and fire, a spring-like mix of both elements of jon's nature.
jon's resurrection will mark a major change for the direction of his character and is potentially the first step towards realising his targaryen heritage and maaaybe becoming a dragon rider. the death of ghost, of his past as the invisible bastard of winterfell, might be necessary for this. however, i don't believe ghost or his identity as a wolf, as a stark, will truly leave him. if he has warged into ghost and lives on for a period of time in his body, it only makes sense that ghost will live on in him even after he has died. prolonged warging can create slippage between man and beast which we've already seen between living jon and his direwolf. we won't lose ghost entirely and perhaps with the affirmation of robb's will and finally turning home towards winterfell, jon will realise he doesn't need the physical emblem of a direwolf to be a stark - he has the wolfblood of the old gods and the first men within him always.

Jon telling Ghost that it’s him who deserves the honors for defeating the wright (half-truth, man and direwolf did it together)
Ghost was curled up asleep beside the door, but he lifted his head at the sound of Jon's boots. The direwolf's red eyes were darker than garnets and wiser than men. Jon knelt, scratched his ear, and showed him the pommel of the sword. "Look. It's you."Ghost sniffed at his carved stone likeness and tried a lick. Jon smiled.
"You're the one deserves an honor," he told the wolf …
Dany thinking that it was Drogon the one defeated the warlocks in the House of Undying (true, Drogon rescued his mama)
Jhiqui disagreed. “You burned the maegi in their house of dust and sent their souls to hell.”
That was Drogon’s victory, not mine, Dany wanted to say, but she held her tongue.
Both magical animals stepped in to rescued their favourite humans and it’s not their last time we see them aiding them when there is a need for it.

A Game of Thrones, Sansa I
Eddard Stark had left before dawn, Septa Mordane informed Sansa as they broke their fast. “The king sent for him. Another hunt, I do believe.
“There are still wild aurochs in these lands, I am told.”
“I’ve never seen an aurochs,” Sansa said, feeding a piece of bacon to Lady under the table. The direwolf took it from her hand, as delicate as a queen.
Septa Mordane sniffed in disapproval. “A noble lady does not feed dogs at her table,” she said, breaking off another piece of comb and letting the honey drip down onto her bread.
“She’s not a dog, she’s a direwolf,” Sansa pointed out as Lady licked her fingers with a rough tongue. “Anyway, Father said we could keep them with us if we want.”
The septa was not appeased. “You’re a good girl, Sansa, but I do vow, when it comes to that creature you’re as willful as your sister Arya.”

𝐀𝐒𝐎𝐈𝐀𝐅 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞
Tumblr media
From the lovely @agameofclothes. I thought I'd give it a crack - if anyone wants to reblog with their answers or make a separate post is all good! I would love to see your answers!
𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦?
I have no idea, honestly. Probably wouldn't be from one of the big Houses :'). Let's just say that I'm one of the main characters ... so I'd want to be from House Targaryen, a long lost cousin.
𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟓 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 (𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐛, 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐲, 𝐉𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐲, 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧, 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐬) 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫?
... None. They're terrible for the role as leader. They're all ... old mean men. Except for Renly and Joffrey. Renly is young and quite hopeful but has no ambition. Joffrey is young and awful.
However, if I were asked who I was loyal to - I would just say whoever, depends on where I am.
𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫?
Cannot and will not choose just one. I love Sansa Stark so much. Her character development is absolutely admirable. From being a close-minded, manipulated young girl, to an adult who knows how the world works. It's amazing.
Dany Targaryen is the main character in both the books and tv series for me. She's the most interesting. From practically being a slave herself, she turned herself into a loved Khaleesi, and worked her way up from there.
𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤?
A Dance with Dragons. Characters have already been fleshed out, and now it's very plot driven.
𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬?
Okay so I found this here. Looking it up, somewhere it says it's semi-canon. But I believe it's real and I fcken love it.
House Plumm - Come Try Me
𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡, 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐒𝐞𝐚?
Well, with the South being Beyond the Wall and the North being cold as fck. I choose across the Narrow Sea.
𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝?
Dany deserves it and I genuinely think she should sit on the Irone Throne. Not because her ancestors created the title and united the lands, but because she has known pain, she wants people to be free -not to be slaves. She wants to liberate.
𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐲𝐝𝐨𝐠, 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐝, 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫, 𝐋𝐚𝐝𝐲, 𝐍𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭?
GHOST! He is the MOST loyal?
𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡?
Abso-fucking-lutely not. It's full of awful men???
𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫?
Like the other question; I couldn't pick one favourite character, so I definitely can't choose just one I dislike. And so this will be in bullet form:
Obviously Ramsay, what an awful dickhead.
Joffrey, the little shit.
In the book, Euron Greyjoy is a big big bad. Very scary. Cruel. Not like in the show where he's kind of funny and amusing. No, Euron in the books is a villain villain.
The Mountain? Disgusting.
Walder Grey and all those who participated in the awful act of the Red Wedding. Terrible.
𝐊𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐢 𝐨𝐫 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧?
Both... but her true name is: Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, the Mother of Dragons, the Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the Unburnt, the Breaker of Chains.
If it means for me, than I would rather be a Queen than a Khaleesi. I want a pretty crown and to have influence over the whole realm ... (I'm very humble...)
𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬?
...dragons. I think that's pretty obvious... Imagine being a descendant of Old Valyria and being able to BOND with a DRAGON. A freaking DRAGON. A beast that would have your back no matter what???
𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐠𝐨𝐝(𝐬) 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨?
The Old Gods of the Forest.
To me, a witch, this religion relies on believing in the world around you.
An excerpt from the GOT wiki page: "nameless spirits of each tree, rock, and stream worshipped by the Children of the Forest and later by the First Men."
It seems the most pagan-like, and I would be very comfortable with following this religion.

Okay but what about 11 year old Sansa running up to Jon and giving him a hug. And he’s mystified because they barely talk, let alone show each other affection. But then she’s like, “Thank you for the direwolves. I’ve named mine Lady and I love her so much.” And then she runs away, back to her lessons with Septa Mordane or whatever, and Jon’s left just standing there, grinning to himself like an idiot.

Reasons why House Stark is my favorite in all of ASOIAF/GOT
They are one of the few noble houses to actually give a shit about the smallfolk of their kingdom. (Granted, not as much as show!Varys does, but it's still notable)
Their history is ANCIENT. Like, the only ones who rival them in longevity seem to be the Blackwoods and the Boltons
They never stop caring about one another, even when separated by thousands of miles and dangerous circumstances.
Ned's legacy looms over the other characters like a specter, and it all culminates in the show with his children breaking the wheel of absolutism and ruling all of Westeros.
Their honor. While it may seem stupid and counterproductive at first, the inspiration of love and loyalty in their allies and friends causes the North to rise up again and again in defiance of the odds, all out of their love for the Starks who had given them so much.
Wolves. I love their wolves. Their cute, fluffy, badass, mind-linked wolves.
And much more (come at me, Lannister-stans and Targ-fans)

A Family Dinner
(requested by the awesome @moonchildrenandflowercrowns )
Summary: You and Aemond have a nice family dinner
The candlelight flickered in the centre of the intimate round table, you sat facing Aemond- both your children sat opposite sides of you On the verge of their teenage years they were both beautiful.
Aelor was going to be a handsome Prince you could tell- inheriting his fathers sharp yet delicate features., he had began training with Aemond, with his fathers guidance he would be a skilled fighter and soon he would be able to ride his dragon, Velaxes, on his own.
Visera shared your features, the iron will of your stark blood and the fiery temper of her Targaryen paternal side made you realize she would be a force to be reckoned with and once her dragon grew larger - Aemond would gladly instruct her and guide her.
You smiled briefly at Aemond as he took a small gulp of wine, he then looked at both his children “How have your lessons gone today? History and Sigils with Sept Una yes?”
Aelor hooded “Yes…we were learning about the great houses of the realm.”
Aemond nodded “So what is house Tullys sigil ?”
Aelor paused but looked at his father “a silver trout”
“Hmmm” Aemond said “And their seat?”
“Riverrun.” Visera answered
You smiled as you took a carrot up with your folk and ate it, seeing the children engage with Aemond was heartwarming .
“You fought in the riverlands Father? During the dance?” Aelor asked
“I did. With Vhagar . Your uncle fought too with his dragon. “ Aemond said cutting up his food.
“No doubt you will read about your fathers triumphs in lessons with Maester Walden.” You said.
Aemond bowed his head slightly at your words, that time he spent away fighting Rhaenyra and Daemons forces left you tormented . Every day you waited for him to return safely and the day he did return was the happiest day for you , your family were whole again and nothing made you happier than Aemond being alive and watching his children grow.
Aemond caught your eye for a moment “And what can either of you tell me about your mothers House?”
Aelor looked at you “House Stark…” he said
You nodded “Indeed and the seat?”
“Winterfell.” Aelor answered
As Aemond swallowed his food he looked at Visera “And the Sigil?” He asked
Visera put her goblet down “oh erm…wolf..direwolf!” She said
Aemond chuckled lightly “Well done.”
You smiled as you pressed your napkin to your lips, Aemond watched you - keeping his eye trained on yours as he took a drink. The fact that Aemond still acknowledged you were from another noble house was admiring , he did not marry per the normal Targaryen Customs, but he was happy and you knew it.
“Did you ever see a direwolf mother ?” Visera asked
You shook your head smiling “I did not…sadly there are no direwolves south of the wall…”
Aelor looked up for a moment “Did you ever see the wall?”
Aemond looked at you, with equal curiosity
You nodded “Once I did. My uncle joined the nights watch and we rode with him to Castle Black to bid him farewell.”
“Is it as tall as they say? Bigger than Vhagar?” Visera asked glancing at Aemond, who chuckled slightly
“Possibly my girl, Vhagar is a very big dragon.” You said
Visera looked at Aemond again “ Is it true she is the largest in the world?”
He nodded once “She is.”
“And the most fierce dragon…” Aelor said picking at his food
“Your dragon Velaxes will be ferocious Aelor…but your bond with your dragon is deeper than a dragons temper.” Aemond said leaning slightly towards him
“I did not have the luxury of growing up with a dragon…I was late in gaining my dragon …and I did not want my children to grow up without a dragon that had been with them since the cradle…”
Your heart sank slightly , the idea that Aemond wanted to ensure his children grow up with proper Targaryen traditions was enriching to your soul, Aemonds sentimentality was warming.
“I’m grateful for Stormfire …just as Aelor is grateful for Velaxes …father.” Visera said holding Aemonds hand and squeezing it once.
Aemond seemed to glow when he was called father, all the worries he had when you were pregnant with both children had melted away and you were so proud of him. You were settled and happy, quietly watching the children tell Aemond about their days of learning, all the fear and dread during the dance now a distant memory- as all was well.
