#Dodge Viper Pacifica

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dodge Viper Pacifica Prototype, 1989. Designed at Chrysler's Pacifica Design Studio, this full convertible Viper was 9/10ths the size of the Viper RT/10 concept and was powered by a V8 rather than V10 engine. Sources suggest it was a "Plan B" Viper, in the event that the "full-fat" RT/10 couldn't be productionized economically the Pacifica would be a slightly smaller, V8 roadster alternative. In fact the RT/10 was put into production and the Pacifica remained a on-off

Short original story about a car accident.
It’s raining. Not like a hard rain or anything. Parker makes his way downy the highway with determination and a degree of speed that might not be exactly legal. But he isn’t going alarmingly fast. He maneuvers his car–a rather stylish Dodge Viper–into the fast lane. It isn’t the latest model but he has it painted a sleek purple some shade in between light and dark. After successfully making his pass he get back into the right lane. He’s behind a Chrysler Pacifica with a collect of bumper and window stickers.
From this he deduces that the driver is probably a soccer mom or an unfortunate son who is stuck using the car. He knows that the dad is still in the picture, helping to raise three kids–a teen boy, a young girl, and a baby girl. They have a dog. Based on the bumper sticker in the left hand corner it’s a shih tzu. He likes shih tzus well enough, but prefers bigger dogs--maybe a pit or a huskie.
Parker turns the volume up. Lil Peep's U Said plays nearly at full blast. He knows that he's probably annoying other drivers with the overload of bass. But he can't help it, other than the rain, its a nice day. The warmth and the gloom almost matches the mood of the song. He rolls the window down. He's about to take the volume up another level but he doesn't quite get that far.
He reads the bumper sticker as he pumps his breaks; 'if you can read this, you're too close.'
The music seems to blare louder, more vividly.
'If you can read this, you're too close.'
He tries pumping the breaks again but they won't engage. The space between his Viper and the Pacifica closes.
'If you can read this you're too close.'
"Motherfuck! I know." He yells. He remembers the emergency break a little too late.
He catches a glimpse of the bumper sticker once more before his fender comes to meet it.
'If you can read this, you're too close.' He can read it alright. He can read it very clearly.

Our 8 Favorite FCA Cars Built Under Sergio Marchionne
In 2009, led by CEO Sergio Marchionne, Fiat purchased a 20-percent stake in Chrysler. Over the next few years, Fiat continually acquired a larger share of the previously bankrupt American automaker. Five years later, in January of 2014, Fiat spent $4.35 billion to acquire the 41.5-percent stake still held by VEBA, the United Auto Workers’ pension fund. With that agreement, Fiat gained full control of Chrysler, and a new company was formed: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
Initially, Marchionne had planned to retire next year, but that all changed recently when he developed complications following surgery and his health took a turn for the worse. On July 21, Mike Manley replaced the Italian-Canadian as CEO, and this morning we learned that the man who saved both Fiat and Chrysler passed away. To commemorate Marchionne’s leadership, let’s take a look at some of the greatest vehicles built by FCA while he was at the helm.
The Hellcats
Over the last decade, Ford and Chevrolet have both spent an incredible amount of money turning the Mustang and Camaro into bona fide sports cars. Dodge, on the other hand, supercharged a V-8. The first cars to get Dodge’s 707-hp monster of an engine were the Challenger and Charger, but FCA didn’t stop there. It later stuffed the Hellcat engine into the Jeep Grand Cherokee to make the Trackhawk, and soon you’ll be able to buy a Hellcat-powered Ram pickup truck. They might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s hard to argue that the Hellcats (and their derivatives) aren’t awesome.
Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio
The 8C is beautiful, and the 4C is great in its own way, but they both appealed to only a small group of enthusiasts. In order for Alfa Romeo to break back into the U.S. market and establish itself as a legitimate BMW competitor, it needed cars it could sell in larger numbers. The Giulia and the lifted Giulia wagon that is the Stelvio are those cars. Reliability is still an issue, but from behind the wheel, you probably won’t care. Even in non-Quadrifoglio form, these are two of the most fun-to-drive vehicles in their respective segments. In fact, we liked the two new Alfas so much that we named the Giulia our 2018 Car of the Year and the Stelvio an SUV of the Year finalist.
Chrysler Pacifica
It may sound crazy to spend $2 billion developing a brand-new minivan, but FCA’s investment appears to have paid off. Through June of this year, the Pacifica has outsold both the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna. The only reason it isn’t the top-selling minivan in the country? Fellow FCA brand Dodge still sells the budget-priced Grand Caravan. The Pacifica also feels thoroughly modern and was competitive enough to be named a finalist in our 2017 Car of the Year competition.
Dodge Viper ACR
The Dodge Viper technically went on sale before Fiat bought the rest of Chrysler, but the track-focused ACR variant didn’t show up until a few years later. Sold as a 2016 model, the Viper ACR was an absolute track monster. Not only did it beat the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and Porsche 911 GT3 RS in a comparison test, it also laid down some incredibly quick lap times. Last we counted, the Viper ACR had more than a dozen track records, including one that our own Randy Pobst set at Laguna Seca.
Fiat 124 Spider
We’re fans of the Fiat 500 Abarth and its raucous exhaust note, but it takes more than one vehicle to bring back a brand in the U.S. It’s also probably safe to say the 500L and 500X weren’t going to do it, either. In 2015, though, Fiat introduced the 124 Spider. It’s based on the Mazda Miata but gets Italian styling, turbo power, and an Abarth version of its own. There’s no way to know what the future holds for Fiat, especially in the U.S., but the 124 Spider at least gives it a fighting chance by bringing customers through the door.
Ferrari 488
At first glance, it would be easy to dismiss the 488 GTB as little more than an updated 458 Italia. Drive one on the track, though, and it quickly becomes clear that’s not the case at all. Thanks in part to its twin-turbocharged V-8, the 488 has a personality of its own. It also proved impressive enough to be named our 2017 Best Driver’s Car. This year, Ferrari upped the ante with the Pista, a track-focused 488 that’s also the most powerful V-8 road car Ferrari has ever sold.
Ram 1500
It’s no secret that full-size trucks are big business in the U.S., and after selling the fourth-generation truck for nearly a decade, Ram needed the fifth-gen 1500 to be a winner. The resulting truck is powerful, quick, fuel-efficient, packed with technology, and rides more like a crossover than the pickup truck it is. Based on what we’ve seen so far, the Chevrolet Silverado better watch its back because the 2019 Ram 1500 is one heck of a truck. The high-quality interior is just an added bonus.
Jeep Wrangler
Under Marchionne’s watch, Jeep grew from a niche player into a true powerhouse. Global sales are expected to cross the two-million mark this year, more than six times higher than they were back in 2009. So when Jeep redesigned the Wrangler, it had more than hardcore off-roaders in its sights. And somehow, it built an SUV that’s even more capable than the outgoing Wrangler while also offering more on-road refinement and improved fuel efficiency. It’s a recipe that can only help Jeep in its quest for global domination.

How to Reset Powertrain Control Module for Jeep Cherokee ?
When a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced on vehicles equipped with the Sentry Key™ Theft Deterrent System, it must be initialized to properly function with the anti-theft module. This is accomplished at a Chrysler Group Dealer by using the DRBIII® or StarSCAN™ Scan ToJol to enter a PIN number. JEEP Dodge Chrysler PAIS 4 EPC Software Download & Installation When the PIN number is not available from the vehicle owner or a Chrysler Group Scan Tool(s) is not available this can be accomplished by writing the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the PCM using an after-market scan tool with a "VIN Write Function". More information is available from the scan tool manufacturer or the Equipment & Tool Institute. NOTE: After performing this procedure with an after-market scan tool on vehicles equipped with Chrysler Group's Next Generation Controller (NGC),Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) “P0633 - SKIM SECRET KEY DATA NOT STORED IN PCM” will be set. This DTC will not effect vehicle or system performance and cannot be erased. SEBRING COUPE/STRATUS COUPE (ST) Initializing the PCM on these vehicles requires the use of a DaimlerChrysler scan tool (DRBIII®), J1962 MMC Cable, and ST22 PCMCIA Diagnostic Card. Initializing the PCM on these vehicles requires the use of a DaimlerChrysler scan tool (DRBIII®), Multiplexer cable box, and the CH9043 Crossfire or CH9087 Sprinter PCMCIA card. This equipment is available for lease from DaimlerChrysler for short periods of time. Let’s Call First Three Quarters of 2018 Auto Sales ‘Not Bad’
IHS Markit had expected 2018 U.S. car and light truck sales to end up at 17 million, about half a million short of 2016’s record. But after September’s seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 17 million, the analysis firm is increasing that number.
How? It’s statistics. “Seasonally adjusted” means just that.
“This September bounce back, and expectations that the pace of sales in the fourth quarter should not move drastically from this level will likely push full-year light vehicle sales volume to 17.1 million units in total,” says Christopher Hopson, manager of IHS Markit’s North America light vehicle forecasting.
Seasonal adjustments mean that July and August historically are very strong sales months as consumers take advantage of warm weather and end-of-model-year prices, while September traditionally is a transitional month as new model-year cars and trucks arrive.
Even though Ford Motor Company, Toyota Motor Sales, American Honda, and Nissan North America saw sales declines last month, the numbers are skewed because September ’17 sales to which they’re being compared were “atypically high,” says IHS Markit’s principal automotive analyst, Stephanie Brinley.
Which might help explain why General Motors switched from monthly sales reports to quarterly sales reports early this year. Quarterly reports give a more steadied look at what’s happening to auto sales. This serves as a reminder that from now on, I’m running year-to-date auto sales ever quarter in place of monthly sales columns, with percentage increases or decreases compared with the same period a year earlier.
We know so far that most car models continue to decline as most SUV and truck models increase, and that Subaru is running ahead of both Hyundai and Kia, while Volkswagen struggles—it’s up 5.5 percent thanks to a new, more competitive Tiguan and the addition of the Atlas three-row SUV, but seems to be selling them mostly to fans of its Golf, Jetta, and Passat.
Mercedes-Benz including its van and Smart division can’t keep up with BMW and Mini, though Mercedes the marque, on the strength of its GLC- and C-Class, has sold 319 more cars and SUVs so far, than BMW without Mini.
Among popular-priced marques, the Toyota RAV4 remains the bestselling model after the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, and Ram 1500 pickup trucks. Speaking of those trucks, the Ram brand is about even for the first nine months of this year, compared with the first nine months of last year, while Fiat Chrysler’s Jeep brand is on fire, outselling Subaru by more than 240,000 units so far this year.
While the Fords Escape and Explorer have lost a combined 26,659 so far this year, the Chevrolets Equinox and Traverse are up a combined 40,134, which is a commentary on either the power of having fresh product on your showroom floors, or the problem with everything at Ford except pickup trucks and truck-based SUVs, or both.
One more clear trend is that with midsize sedan owners trading them in for compact SUVs, compact sedan sales is catching midsize sales by default. So the Honda Civic is outselling the Accord, the Toyota Corolla (including iM) is outselling the Camry, and the Nissan Sentra is just 1,452 units behind Altima.
And so, to the numbers …
1. General Motors: 2,168,808, off 1.2 percent.
This breaks down to 1,504,038 Chevrolets, off 0.8 percent, 395,924 GMCs, off 2.4 percent, 155,606 Buicks, off 2.6 percent and 113,240 Cadillacs, off 0.5 percent.
Chevrolet has sold 424,403 Silverados for 2018 so far, up 1.4 percent. All but a few thousand sold in September were the old ’18 model. GMC Sierra was off 1.4 percent, to 152,242.
Chevy Equinox was up 10.2 percent, to 234,379, while Malibu was off 23.9 percent, to 107,458 and Cruze was down 26.5 percent, to 109,662.
Chevy Traverse was up 20.4 percent, to 106,998 and Colorado was up 26.3 percent, to 104,838 and GMC Canyon was up 8.6 percent, to 25,273.
Encore again leads Buick sales year-to-date, up 7.7 percent, to 69,747. Buick has sold 35,277 Enclaves, up 12.1 percent, while Regal is up 22.4 percent, to 11,008.
Cadillac has sold 46,983 XT5s year-to-date, off 5.7 percent, plus 212 XT4s all of the latter in September.

Ford Mustang leads Pony Car Wars, at 61,619, off 0.9 percent, to Dodge Challenger’s 52,313, up 37 units for the year so far, with Chevy Camaro third at 39,828, off 25.9 percent.
Ford says September sales of the F-Series topped 70k for the seventh straight month, at 75,092, off 8.8 percent. Year-to-date, Ford has sold 679,018 F-Series, up 3.1 percent.
Escape is off 10.2 percent year-to-date, to 210,050 and Explorer is down 1.6 percent, to 171,416, meaning that both models are slipping in two of the hottest segments.
Ford Fusion is off 21.8 percent, to 124,964 and Focus was off 19 percent, to 100,267.
Expedition is up 0.3 percent, to 40,521, while Lincoln Navigator has rocketed up 81.9 percent, to 13,085.
While the Ford marque is off 2.1 percent, to 1,812,345 through September, Lincoln is down 9 percent, to 75,280.

Cadillac Escalade is up 3.3 percent, to 27,299, while CT6 is off 10.6 percent, to 7,270.
Both Chevrolets Bolt and Volt have slipped this year, so far. The Bolt EV is down 17.4 percent, to 11,807, trailing the Volt, which is off 13.7 percent, to 13,243. Corvette is off 21.2 percent, but leads both electrics with 14,881 sold in ’18 so far.
2. Ford Motor Company: 1,887,625, off 2.4 percent.
MKX was off 12.6 percent, to 19,886 through September, a month before first deliveries of the Nautilus replacement. MKC is down 5.5 percent, to 19,270.
Continental languishes at 6,334, off 28.6 percent.

Tacoma is up 24.8 percent, to 183,909, while Tundra is up 2.5 percent, to 87,782.
Buoyed by addition of the three-row model, Lexus RX is up 4.9 percent, to 79,563. NX is up 3.6 percent, to 43,513.

Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat Will Still Play Key Role in FCA Lineup
Steve Beahm took over as head of FCA passenger car brands (Dodge, SRT, Chrysler, and Fiat) for North America in February, responsible for selling and marketing once-majestic brands now struggling for relevance in an SUV-happy market. In 32 years with FCA, the Washington native has done fieldwork and supply chain management, and he led Maserati North America. He started racing at 16 and still follows the sport, so when FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne asked him to take this job, “it was a quick yes.”
Congratulations on the new job.
I started February 1, so we’re on four months, but I’ve been around the company for almost 32 years, not necessarily in this role, but in a lot of commercial roles throughout that time frame. Never in the brand. Most of my career has been in sales, in the operations side, running incentives, field operations. I had Maserati for a short period of time, as well as the supply chain.
So you have it in your blood?
I started racing with my dad when I was 16 and did it for about 20 years and only gave it up because I ran out of time. The career was taking more of my time, and I had some kids at the time so I had to give up the sport, but I still follow it today.
What were you racing?
My first car was a ’69 (Plymouth) Roadrunner and the second one was a ’70 (Dodge) Challenger. Then I went on the dark side and raced a couple GM models for a while, but I started on the Mopar side and whatever my dad had available, I was willing to drive at the time.
So you are the perfect man for this job.
When Mr. (Sergio) Marchionne (chairman and CEO of FCA) asked me, it was a quick ‘yes.’
FCA’s five-year plan centers on volume brands. What is the role of the brands you oversee?
Passenger car brands represent 20 percent of NAFTA revenue. Dodge is the biggest brand by volume and revenue. Dodge’s role is to be prominent as America’s sports car brand. That’s what we’ve labelled it in the past few years, and I truly believe that’s where the brand is at today and where it’s headed for the future.
Charger and Challenger stay on the same platform, and you just keep updating it?
There’s a lot to be said for keeping a similar platform from the standpoint of knowing the bones that you have and how to make it better. We’ve had a proven vehicle out for a period of time, and right now that would be the direction we would head and for the vehicle it’s the right thing. No full commitments, but that’s part of our direction right now.
With the Challenger, have Hellcat and Demon been a boost to visibility?
It has been. Challenger started as a 2008, then Hellcat in 2015; Demon came out as a 2018 model. And we’ve got some other stuff coming down the road. For 2019 we’re going to do a Redeye. It’s a Hellcat that’s been possessed by a Demon. It’s  got a Hellcat body—basically suspension and platform—with the Demon engine. It’s calibrated a little bit differently than in the Demon, but it’s pretty much the Demon engine, so 797 horsepower. It’s a wide body, as well, so you get the 3.5-inch-wider wheels, which means more rubber on the ground.
Are those Nexen tires?
Redeye has Pirelli P Zeros. In terms of performance, the Demon was intended for the track even though it was street legal. We wanted to provide a car that wouldn’t be just on a race track or in somebody’s garage, but a car that would actually be out on the road. So the Redeye has a lot of the same features that were in the Hellcat or the Demon, performance-wise. We’re excited about it. It’s going to be a mainstream vehicle. It’s expected to sell 7 to 8 percent of our mix within Hellcat.
Will it have the transbrake, too?
It will not have the transbrake. It has line lock. Transbrake was the dragstrip piece on the Demon side, along with the suspension that was created for the Demon, so a lot of those features are not available on the Redeye.
Will it be a special edition or limited run?
It is not a special edition. I view it as no different than the Hellcat itself, other than we got an additional version with higher horsepower. It’s not limited to certain volumes. We have no limitations of the volumes right now, and we’re estimating it will be somewhere between 6 and 9 percent of Hellcat sales.
What other variants are planned?
Scat Pack: the first performance vehicle on the Challenger side. We’re going to make wide body available on the Scat Pack for the first time. The second feature is that it gets the waterfall hood from the Hellcat, and the Hellcat is going to get a dual-snorkel hood. That provides an extra 10 horsepower on the Hellcat, so it goes from 707 to 717. It’s fully functional. The left snorkel on the hood goes straight into the induction system and allows the engine to give us 10 more horsepower.
The (Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack) 1320 is another model that we will announce at the Dodge Mile High NHRA event in Denver on July 19. It’s a special model, a buzz model. The 1320 is intended to be a vehicle that someone can drive to work, but if they’re working on a Saturday they can head over to the dragstrip and take it down the track. It has a lot of features that you may have seen on the Demon or on Hellcat, that’s available as a Scat Pack. So the Scat Pack is the base model of 1320. It has 485 hp. It’s got special wheels and tires in terms of traction and capability, so the vehicle will be able to hook up in all conditions whether it be on the road or on the track. And it’s got some cool down features for someone who might be hot-lapping at the track, for the staging lanes. It will have some other cool features that will allow the vehicle to be a little bit more race-friendly for someone who is driving it to the track.
Are there other models for 1320?
No, it’s just going to be the Scat Pack for now. And Scat Pack will be the wide body whether it’s on a 1320 or not. But the only way you can get a 1320 is in a wide body off the Scat Pack. Nexen street-legal drag radials will be available, and it’ll also come with a little “Angry Bee” on it (an homage to the Dodge Super Bee). We’ll also supply some additional screens (in the instrument cluster) for setting up your car, similar to what we did with the Demon. In this case, it may not be to the same extent, but you have the capability to go in and try to set up the right balance for track conditions on the 1320.
You can keep doing that until you are limited by regulations or unable to add the tech you want?
(What stays the same) is the bones of the platform: A frames, suspension. All the other stuff underneath it will actually be all brand new in terms of our wiring harness, electrical capability. The architecture might be off the same platform—in some cases, we might make some enhancements—but everything else pretty much will be relatively all new.
Is there room to further expand the Hellcat family?
We’re always challenging our engineers. We’re always challenging our people on the marketing side to come up with what the people want. Dodge has the largest social media following of any brand, and we think we’re closer to our customers because of that. We have the most Facebook followers, most followers on Instagram and Twitter; our job is to listen to [our customers], and when we can go down some paths they want us to, if it’s good for our brand, we’ll do it. That’s a lot of what’s happened with Hellcat, Demon, and then the Redeye. A lot of the Demons are in storage rooms, a few of them are on the track. I want to see some Redeyes out on the road.
The FCA plan has the Hellcat engine going into the Ram pickup.
Yeah, we’ve got great engineers that provided us with an outstanding engine that has a bunch of performance, and the Ram guys think that’s a good fit for them to take advantage of it as well, and we’re good with that.
There were reports that the Viper is coming back.
As Mr. Marchionne indicated, the Viper is not in the [next five-year] plan.
The Viper plant no longer exists.
It does not. It is being modified for meetings, as a conference center, and a way to display some of our cars.
Does SRT remain as a brand?
It’s a brand that’s very important to Dodge. As America’s performance brand, SRT has to be the organization that continues to push us on the edge of performance. It’s that fine line of putting it on the track and driving it on the street. The SRT engineering team continues to find ways to provide us that performance level that our competitors can’t match.
Durango has performance versions.
Absolutely. It has an SRT version, so don’t underestimate the Durango. The Journey may be a little different, but the Durango SRT is one impressive vehicle.
So Durango fits with what you are trying to do with Dodge.
Absolutely.
How do Journey, Caravan, and Durango still fit in Dodge? Or do they have a long-term role?
They have a role through the ’19 model year. We don’t talk much beyond that. But being America’s performance brand, long term, [some of the vehicles] may not fit.
When does the Grand Caravan go away?
We haven’t announced the end of production. It’s going to be through the 2019 model year, like the Journey, at this point.
Was the Magnum ahead of its time? It fits the Dodge persona now.
We had a couple trendsetters: the original Pacifica and then the Magnum. They’re both unique vehicles. We’ve actually looked at it, but at this stage we’re not headed down that path.
Is Chrysler the minivan brand?
I view it as people movers. The Pacifica is the anchor of the brand. It’s an outstanding vehicle, good for us to build upon. We’re looking for other opportunities. It’s my job to find ways for that brand to grow.
A Pacifica-based corssover was delayed. Is it still in the plan?
It’s not in the future plans Mr. Marchionne spoke about so I can’t give more details about that.
Do you stop making the Chrysler 300 but keep the Dodge large cars?
The 300 goes through the ’19 model year. If you step back and say, ‘Does it fit people movers?’ it does from the sedan standpoint, but not from a utility.
Can Chrysler survive with just a minivan?
It’s my job to look for opportunities—in a profitable way—to build on the Pacifica. Waymo agreed to buy 62,000 [Pacifica hybrids for their autonomous vehicle fleet]. I want to build on that and add Chrysler products.
Waymo is a great partnership.
I look forward to that relationship. I think it’s good for both of us.
Are there plans to take Dodge and Chrysler international? Are they NAFTA-only brands?
The passenger cars for Dodge and Chrysler are NAFTA influenced heavily, way north of 90 percent, and that will continue moving forward.
Is Fiat’s product line streamlined for North America?
The product plan is driven from EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa). Our job is to identify what models work for the U.S. and NAFTA. We’ll take products they build in Europe, homologate them, and they’ll be electric with a high percent of them hybrids.

2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye First Look: Possessed by a Demon
Hellcat is becoming a full litter for Dodge.
The Dodge brand, which FCA is winnowing down to a sports car brand, is building on the success of the Challenger SRT Hellcat and subsequent Demon by expanding the family.
After the Challenger began as a 2008 model. Dodge added the Hellcat for 2015, and the Demon came out as an 2018 model. “For ’19 we’re going to do a Redeye. It’s a Hellcat that’s been possessed by a Demon,” said Steve Beahm, head of Passenger Car Brands-Dodge, SRT, Chrysler, and Fiat for FCA North America.
“We’ve got a Hellcat body, basically suspension and platform, and then we’ve got the Demon engine,” Beahm says in an interview with Motor Trend. “It’s a little bit different calibration than the Demon engine.”
The supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 generates 797 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque in the 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, making it the most powerful production V-8 now that Dodge has stopped production of the Demon. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Quickest muscle car
FCA says the Challenger Redeye is now the quickest muscle car with a claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.4 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 10.8 seconds at 131 mph with a top speed of 203 mph. The Demon, capable of 840 hp and 770 lb-ft on high-octane race fuel, has a claimed 0-to-60 mph in 2.3 seconds. Its 3,300-unit production run ended in May.
“In terms of performance, the Demon was intended for the track even though it was street legal,” Beahm said. The Redeye grew out of a desire to provide a car that would be out on the road, not just on the track or in somebody’s garage. Dodge designed the Redeye as a mainstream vehicle with a lot of the same performance features in the Hellcat or Demon.
The Redeye “is a wide body as well, so you get the 3.5-inch-wider wheels, more rubber on the ground,” Beahm said. It has Pirelli P Zero tires.
It does not have the Demon’s Drag mode suspension tuning for weight transfer on launch or TransBrake which mechanically locks the output shaft of the transmission as the throttle goes up to build and hold more power for launch in Drag mode, but the Redeye does have line lock.
Not limited run or special edition
Like the Hellcat, the Redeye is not a special edition or limited run, Beahm said. “It’s not limited to certain volumes.” He expects the Redeye to account for 7 to 8 percent of total Hellcat sales.
The Redeye goes into production in Brampton, Ontario, this fall for delivery by the end of the year. It will top the 2019 Challenger lineup that still includes the SRT Hellcat, which boosts its performance to 717 hp and 656 lb-ft of torque. That is made possible with a new dual-snorkel hood that pays homage to muscle cars from the mid-’60s and early ’70s and is fully functional, providing maximum air intake. The left snorkel goes straight into the induction system and allows the engine to give the extra 10 hp.
The previous bulging aluminum hood from the Hellcat migrates to the Scat Pack for ’19. Dodge is also making the widebody available on the Scat Pack for the first time. The R/T Scat Pack Widebody shares the same fender flares as the SRT Hellcat Widebody, which add 3.5 inches to the overall width and is shod with Pirelli P Zero 305/35ZR20 tires mounted to 20 x 11-inch forged Devil’s Rim aluminum wheels. Also for ’19, Challenger GT RWD and R/T models get a standard high-performance suspension.
Ramming the Hellcat engine into a pickup
The Hellcat engine also migrates to Ram for a performance pickup to go up against the Ford F-150 Raptor. The Ram TRX will go into production by 2022, according to FCA’s latest five-year plan. Says Beahm: “We’ve got great engineers that provided us with an outstanding engine that has a bunch of performance. The Ram guys think that’s a good fit for them to take advantage of it as well, and we’re good with that.”
Is there room to further expand the Hellcat family? “We’re always challenging our engineers. We’re always challenging our people on the marketing side to come up with what the people want. That’s one thing the Dodge team has done well,” Beahm said, noting Dodge has the largest social media following, on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram of any brand that allows interaction with customers. ”Our job is to listen to them, and when we can go down some paths they want us to, if it’s good for our brand, we’ll do it. That’s a lot of what’s happened over the last few years with Hellcat, Demon, and then the Redeye because a lot of the Demons are in storage rooms, a few of them are on the track. I want to see some Redeyes out on the road.”
Beahm also will continue the SRT brand, which pushes the performance edge, which is crucial to Dodge.
Taking up where Kuniskis left off
Beahm took over management of the passenger brands in February. He replaced Tim Kuniskis, who was promoted to global chief for Maserati and Alfa Romeo. Kuniskis is credited with taking the moribund Dodge brand and creating niche performance cars that generated a lot of buzz for the brand. He said his goal was to “tattoo the Dodge name into the subconscious of every performance enthusiast.”
Beahm is another good fit. “I started racing with my dad when I was 16 and did it for about 20 years and only gave it up because I ran out of time,” he tells Motor Trend. “My first car was a ’69 [Plymouth] Road Runner and the second one was a ’70 [Dodge] Challenger. Then I went on the dark side and raced a couple GM models for a while but I started on the Mopar side and whatever my dad had available, I was willing to drive at the time.” Eventually career and family responsibilities left little time for racing, but he still follows it today.
When Sergio Marchionne, chairman and CEO of FCA, asked Beahm to take over the passenger brands, “It was a quick ‘yes.’”
Dodge, Chrysler not focus of five-year plan
The latest five-year plan, which takes FCA through 2022, is focused on the automaker’s four volume brands: Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. The brands overseen by Beahm are relegated to predominantly NAFTA-region brands with smaller portfolios and sales and fewer resources. It requires some spit and ingenuity to maintain older platforms and create new vehicles.
It means Challenger and Charger, as well as the Chrysler 300, remain on the same, aging platform, with sheetmetal updates and other enhancements to keep them as fresh as possible.
“Dodge’s role is to be prominent as America’s sports car brand. That’s what we’ve labelled it in the past few years, and I truly believe that’s where the brand is at today and where it’s headed for the future,” Beahm said.
Viper is dead
That does not mean the return of the Viper. “At this stage, as Mr. Marchionne indicated, the Viper is not in the [next five-year] plan.”
And although the Durango fits the profile with its SRT version, the Journey’s future at this point is only being confirmed through the 2019 model year. The plan remains to discontinue the Grand Caravan minivan when more capacity is needed at the Windsor, Ontario, plant that also makes the Chrysler Pacifica, and the brand could add a Pacifica-based Chrysler crossover. Beahm said his job is to grow the Chrysler brand, which may or may not continue to include the 300 sedan.

Top 10 Chrysler Concepts You May Have Forgotten » AutoGuide.com News
http://www.autositenews.com/?p=7643
Chrysler‘s recent concept cars may not be terribly exciting, but in the past, it has created some stunning machines.
The American automaker’s most recent concept car is the Portal EV, an autonomous minivan-like vehicle that offers seating for six. If you’re an automotive enthusiast, nothing about the Portal Concept gets you excited. And if we’re being honest, Chrysler’s lineup these days isn’t doing the brand much justice with just the 300 sedan and the Pacifica minivan being offered.
SEE ALSO: Chrysler Portal Concept Tries to Make Minivans Cool Again
But there was a time when Chrysler generated a lot of interest with its concepts, some of which featured design and styling elements that eventually made their way to production cars. Other concepts never resulted in anything, despite a positive reception from the general public.
So we decided to take a look at some of Chrysler’s past concept cars, and here’s 10 you may have forgotten even existed.
10. Chrysler Chronos Concept
Introduced in 1998, the Chrysler Chronos Concept was heavily inspired by the 1953 Chrysler D’Elegance Concept, as well as the design of the Chrysler 300C. Under the hood of the concept was a 6.0-liter V10 engine generating around 350 horsepower, while it borrowed components from the Viper’s suspension. It rode on a high-strength steel chassis with rear-wheel drive, aluminum wheels, and a large wheelbase. Chrysler also put an emphasis on the concept’s interior, making it incredibly luxurious with wood dash panels, an in-place humidor with storage, humidistat, and lighter, as well as a hand-wrapped leather steering wheel.
9. Chrysler Java Concept
The Chrysler Java Concept made its official debut at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show and was considered a design study for the brand. “Conveying American optimism, the Chrysler Java show car represents a fresh design approach to an important European market segment,” Chrysler said in a press release at its unveiling. “With its clean, yet refined and elegant ‘one box’ profile, Java’s ‘Passenger Priority Design’ makes maximum use of its exterior dimensions.”
The concept boasted what Chrysler called unique Panoramic Seating that featured high H-points that enhanced visibility, comfort, space, and ease of entry and exit for both driver and passengers. The company said its design was almost architectural rather than automotive, with classic architectural proportions complemented by dynamic contemporary character lines. Under the hood was a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine generating around 80 horsepower and 95 pound-feet of torque.
8. Chrysler Phaeton Concept
There was a time when Chrysler wanted a flagship for its lineup, with Plymouth offering the Prowler and Dodge having the infamous Viper sports car. The Phaeton Concept debuted in 1997, and perhaps in a way, it was Chrysler’s vision of a flagship but in the form of an outlandish four-door convertible. Head designer John E. Herlitz said the concept “embraces and contemporizes elegant, classic design cues from historic touring automobiles of the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s.” Heavily inspired by the 1941 Newport, the Phaeton Concept rode on 22-inch wheels, while the interior featured cream leather with brown details, satin metal highlights, and Zebrano wood accents.
Powering the Phaeton Concept was a 5.4-liter aluminum V12 engine with around 425 hp, while suspension similar to that of the Dodge Viper was used.
7. Chrysler Citadel Concept
Before hybrids were as popular as they are today, Chrysler rolled out the Citadel Concept in 1999 with a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine powering the rear wheels, and an electric motor powering the front. At the time, Chrysler said the V6 generated 253 hp and the electric motor added another 70 hp, helping generate similar performance of a V8 vehicle. There was also a spacious interior with dual-power sliding rear doors and a power rear gate, all of which has become commonplace since the concept’s original debut.
6. Chrysler LHX Concept
The Chrysler LHX Concept may look a bit familiar, especially its headlights. The concept was introduced in 1996 and previewed styling elements that eventually made their way onto the Concorde sedan. At the time of the LHX Concept’s debut, Chrysler executive vice president of product design and international operations, Tom Gale, referred to the LHX as a “heritage design,” defined as “taking the best aesthetic elements from the past and providing a modern interpretation.” Like the LHS that came before the Concorde, the LHX Concept had a front-engine, front-wheel-drive design, featuring a 250-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine.
5. Chrysler Atlantic Concept
First shown in 1995, the Chrysler Atlantic was dubbed a retro concept car, designed by Bob Hubbach and inspired by the Bugatti Atlantic coupes of the 1930s. Powering the concept was a 4.0-liter straight-eight engine, with massive 21-inch wheels up front and 22-inch rollers in the rear. Output from the inline-eight engine, which was essentially a pair of 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine blocks from the Dodge Neon put together, was around 360 hp.
There’s a story behind the Chrysler Atlantic’s design, with some saying “what if” sketches were done by then Chrysler president Robert Lutz during a lunch with design chief Thomas Gale. Gale passed those ideas to the design staff, and the Atlantic Concept was the result.
4. Chrysler Thunderbolt Concept
Sporting a 4.0-liter V8 engine with 270 hp, the Chrysler Thunderbolt Concept borrowed styling cues from the 1941 concept car of the same name. Chrysler even created a flyer for the Thunderbolt Concept, calling it “The Dream Car.” The two-door hardtop coupe featured four-wheel disc brakes, four-wheel independent suspension, anti-lock brakes, and traction control. “Remember dreaming of that special car? A car so unique and so elegant it would be a rolling sculpture, a fine work of art? It would be sleek, moving effortlessly and gracefully through the streets, with shapely body panels, a low stance to pounce on any challenge, and plenty of glass for great visibility – to see and be seen,” the flyer read. “That’s what the Thunderbolt is all about.”
3. Chrysler Cirrus Concept
One of Chrysler’s more interesting concepts was the Cirrus from 1992. Under the hood was a 3.0-liter turbocharged, two-stroke engine that ran on fuel-grade alcohol, producing 400 hp. The concept featured a cab-forward design and the lack of a B-pillar was due to the fact the rear-passenger doors were rear-hinged. The Cirrus nameplate went on as a production car, more commonly known as the Stratus or Plymouth Breeze.
2. Chrysler 300 Concept
The Chrysler 300 as we know it is really a far cry from the 300 Concept from 1991. Inspired by the Dodge Viper, the Chrysler 300 Concept was longer, wider, and taller but was still powered by an 8.0-liter V10. Although the concept was created as a production-intent vehicle, with standard steel and lighting to meet legal requirements, it would never head to production. Certain elements of its design, however, did end up on later production cars for the brand, such as the grille and scalloped headlights. The concept even featured an interesting version of keyless start, with a coded key card that had to be inserted into the center console in order to access the ignition button.
1. Chrysler ME Four-Twelve Concept
Believe it or not, the Chrysler ME Four-Twelve Concept was first unveiled at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show. Sporting a chassis tub constructed from carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb, the lightweight supercar was powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine with four turbochargers to generate 850 hp. At the time, had the Four-Twelve gone into production, it would have been the most powerful and fastest road-going vehicle. But sadly it never went into production. What’s interesting is that the styling is modern even by today’s standards, and Chrysler could roll this thing off the assembly line in 2018 and people would probably line up to buy it.
