Lord of the Rings Characters as Studio Ghibli Characters
Because my mom and I just watched all the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies and I am also obsessed with Studio Ghibli, I thought this would be fun! So here we go!
Frodo – Nausicäa (Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind
Tumblr media
Both simply want to protect and save their homes (Frodo with the Shire and Nausicäa with the Valley), and although they can fight, they consistently choose not to, and choose to be kind instead.
Sam – Pazu (Castle in the Sky)
Tumblr media
Both have similar arcs! They have a friend they are ride or die for, but when the friend sends them away, they have to make a choice to go home or go back for their friend anyway—and they choose to have courage and go back.
Merry – Kiki (Kiki’s Delivery Service)
Tumblr media
(Merry was kinda hard ngl) I think he and Kiki have growing up in common. They learn the hard way that life isn’t how they thought it was or would be, whether by being thrust into a dangerous quest or going off to grow up alone; and although this sobers them up a bit, they never lose their optimism and instead figure out what they can do to keep their heads up.
Pippin – Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Tumblr media
Like Merry, Pippin was thrust into the whole Quest unexpectedly, as was Chihiro (and yes I’m aware Pippin knew a little bit in the books but bear with me). But both have a common goal of helping others (for Pippin it’s Frodo, and for Chihiro it’s her parents), and maybe they don’t know exactly what they’re doing, but they survived their journeys.
Gandalf – Zeniba (Spirited Away)
Tumblr media
Zeniba is just as powerful as her twin Yubaba, but rather than use her power for greedy purposes, Zeniba chose to live a quiet, simple life in the forest. Similarly, Gandalf is one of the Maiar—an all-powerful wizard who consistently implies he could decimate everyone in his way. And yet, he interacts with people, he loves hobbits, he uses his power to entertain and delight people; he consistently chooses a simple life.
Aragorn – Howl (Howl’s Moving Castle)
Tumblr media
Both run from something—Howl from any supposed “national responsibility” and Aragorn from his family history. But both come into themselves and both find a reason to fight. Although I think Aragorn is FAR less concerned about his appearance lol
Legolas – Haku (Spirited Away)
Tumblr media
Legolas was also hard, but I went based on vibes and Haku fit those vibes. They’re both beings that have a strong connection to nature, Haku being a river spirit and Legolas being a Wood Elf.
Gimli – Dola (Castle in the Sky)
Tumblr media
Gimli and Dola both appear gruff and crude at first, insensitive and not caring about anything except their goals. But as time goes on, it is revealed they are very caring people who love their friends and families, and they’re actually pretty soft inside after all. And both have a love for treasure!
Boromir – Ashitaka (Princess Mononoke)
Tumblr media
Both Ashitaka and Boromir have a lot going on—Ashitaka obviously has his curse that’s eating away at him and has to spend the entire movie contemplating his own imminent death, and Boromir has the weight of his father’s expectations and the desire to defend Gondor and save his people. But they are both very noble people who try to do the right thing even if they may not know what exactly the right thing is, and at the very end they stick to their morals and end their films with honor.
That’s all for now! I may do a part 2!

First time watching Castle in the Sky from Studio Ghibli
You know how when people love something, they say “I want to experience that for the first time again”? I think that sometimes too.
I have a long list of shows and movies that seem to be considered classics or must-knows that I’ve been…procrastinating on. I reckon it’s about time to start watching those, and what better way to make sure I remember how it feels to experience them for the first time than to share the entire experience with everyone?
So here is part one: my first time watching Castle in the Sky from Studio Ghibli, with no prior knowledge or research about the film (except that I’m 100% sure I have heard the soundtrack somewhere).
I use the #commentary tag for my commentary posts, and you can also find a complete list of my commentary posts at my wordpress blog (link in bio). Final thoughts are at the bottom:)
Tumblr media
Dudes are like, 2 seconds away from falling. How the heck are you holding onto you flying motorcycle thing like that? What is this?
Also, I love how they make the things look like flies, and then gives them fly noises too.
Tumblr media
Why are you still shooting when they are not there? What a waste if bullets—hold on, do they not shoot bullets in this universe, like star wars guns? I mean, the guns do make “pew pew” sounds instead of “bang bang” sounds, so.
Tumblr media
oh my gosh I did not expect this! I see the suits and sunglasses and thought she’s like a princess with bodyguards or something.
Tumblr media
oh. ma’am, I’m sorry for calling you “dude” earlier on. Somehow the pigtails didn’t clue me in, but it’s a gender neutral “dude”, I swear.
Tumblr media
lmao I was just thinking “how you gonna hold her up when she stops floating”
Tumblr media
She almost got killed for this thing, and she just takes it off? And gives it to him? And lets him wear it? And HELPS him wear it? And just watches him walk off while wearing it?? What are you doing!!!
Tumblr media
Wait. How did they find her here? Most likely no one saw her coming other than Pazu. And she didn’t fall here, she fell at the mines! They’re in the middle of nowhere?
Tumblr media
*sighs and shakes her head* Men.
Tumblr media
Pazu: Can barely lift Sheeta
Also Pazu: Hangs on to a crumbling wooden bridge with one hand while holding Sheeta (also with one hand)
Tumblr media
I should probably start a counter for “how many times Pazu should have died in this film”. “My head is hard” my ass, he is protected by the power of god and anime.
Tumblr media
I think I’m starting to like Dola haha, I always like competent and smart villains (sense of humour is a huge plus too!) It’s just that her choice of minions is erm…
Tumblr media
Now “protagonist becomes a pirate to save love interest” is a concept I can get behind:) And I also finally learned how the guys managed to not fall out their flying things so that’s great—never thought they’d actually address it.
Tumblr media
Noooooooooo the poor guy just got revived five minutes ago and it just wants to protect the princess!! :((( #character death
Tumblr media
…But I thought she is a kid. A teenager at best. What the heck is going on here. They just mean “pretty” as in “this little girl is cute”, right? Right? Right? just for my peace of mind?
Tumblr media
List of things you should NOT do right next to a freaking cliff: number one.
Tumblr media
Things protected by the power of god and anime: 1. Pazu’s head; 2. Those eggs
Tumblr media
How does he know so much about Laputa when the majority of people don’t even believe it exists? It’s one thing to believe it exists and make it his life goal to find it, but where does all this knowledge come from? He totally knows where he is going! And now that I mentioned it, how did he find out about Sheeta’s real name? (me, two minutes later: ah, okay then)
Tumblr media
Look, I understand the allure of power, but what’s the point of becoming king if there’s literally no one to rule over? Is he planning to take over the world? Or does he not actually want to be a king all that much but just thinks he is owed this position because he’s born as a royal?
Tumblr media
Just throw it! Flick it over! *pulls at hair*
Tumblr media
Awwww. In case you haven’t noticed from my username, I have a thing for hugs. Love them. Crave them. An ending with a hug is the best ending.
Thoughts:
1.      Adults
Children’s and YA literature as a genre tend to distrust towards adults. The villains are adults. The parents are dead or unhelpful. My professor in college said that this is a way to create teaching moments: you can’t depend on adults, and have to learn to save yourself!
And at first I thought this story would be just like that too. Both Pazu and Sheeta are orphans. The villains are not just adults, but adults in power. And then the first non-villains adult we meet is Pazu’s boss, who apparently doesn’t listen to Pazu at all. I found the scene infuriating-: the adults needed Pazu to work—he doesn’t just run errands, but also takes on important tasks like operating the lift, yet there seems to be no respect or consideration for him. And the boss just leaves him alone in the mines when he goes home like that’s normal!
However, as the story goes on, I realized the role of adults in this story is not as negative as I thought. The boss and his wife ended up buying time for Pazu and Sheeta to escape, and train driver helps them with no questions asked, and even Dola, despite claiming to help them only for treasures, turns out to be helpful, and actually genuinely cares. I actually quite like the way our protagonists are treated on her ship (if we look past how exploitative it is, okay). They are not treated as a burden, ever, but put to important tasks based on their skillsets. They are treated as equals, not in a “you guys are grown-ups now and will have to fend for yourselves” way, but in a “I trust you and your judgement but at the same time you will get the guidance and help you need” way. Kudos to that. Oh and I love that Dola gave Sheeta pants. Those dresses stress me out so much.
2.      Mood
The colours and the overall atmosphere just gives me so much chimney sweeper vibes idk. Which is definitely not a happy vibe. There is so much blue, and everything is so dark—I don’t just mean the film began in night time. There is just a lack of colours in general, and everything is kind of muted. Even the peaceful/hopeful moments seem to carry a twinge of melancholy. I think it only clears out when they are with Dola’s gang on the ship.
The same goes for the music. I’m not the most educated person regarding music, but it seems to me the music is always kind of melancholic, and it’s not just because it is mainly piano. I was a bit unsure of this because the music remains sad even when they reach Laputa, but then as I watched on, I realized the melancholy in the music can be a kind of foreshadowing to what they see and encounter in the city. So, I guess it’s all intentional?
