Opinion | No one needs an AR-15 or any gun tailor-made for mass shootings
By the Editorial Board
The Post’s investigative series on the AR-15’s dominant place in the United States’ marketplace and psyche sat atop the Post website on Monday, the day of its release — until, hours later, breaking news replaced it. Three adults and three children had been killed in a Nashville school shooting by a 28-year-old assailant with three guns, including at least one AR-15-style rifle.
These attacks are always heart-wrenching. But they’re not surprising anymore — neither the massacres themselves nor the weapons used to carry them out. 10 of the 17 deadliest mass killings in the United States since 2012 involved AR-15s. The names of the towns and cities where these tragedies took place have become familiar: Newtown, San Bernardino, Las Vegas, Parkland, Uvalde and beyond. The Post chronicles the journey this now-iconic rifle took from military-issued firearm to off-the-shelf bestseller, and underscores the danger in the public’s embrace of a weapon the Defense Department once lauded for its “phenomenal lethality.”
Tumblr media
“I don’t know why anyone needs an AR-15,” President Donald Trump reportedly told aides in August 2019 after back-to-back mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso. There’s no good answer. The AR-15 was designed for soldiers, yet its associations with warfare eventually became a selling point for everyday buyers. “Use what they use,” exhorted one ad displaying professionals wielding tactical rifles. Now, about 1 in 20 U.S. adults own at least one AR-15. That’s roughly 16 million people, storing roughly 20 million guns designed to mow down enemies on the battlefield with brutal efficiency. Two-thirds of these were crafted in the past decade — and when more people die, popularity doesn’t fall. Instead, it rises.
Tumblr media
The AR-15, The Post explains, is materially different from traditional handguns. The rifle fires very small bullets at very fast speeds. The projectiles don’t move straight and smooth through human targets like those from a traditional handgun. Their velocity turns them unstable upon penetration, so that they tumble through flesh and vital organs. This so-called blast effect literally tears people apart. A trauma surgeon notes, “you don’t see the muscle … just bone and skin and missing parts.” Another mentions tissue that “crumbled into your hands.”
A Texas Ranger speaks of bullets that “disintegrated” a toddler’s skull.
This explains the lead poisoning that plagues survivors of the shooting in Sutherland Springs, Tex.; David Colbath, 61, can scarcely stand or use his hands without pain, and 25-year-old Morgan Workman probably can’t have a baby. It explains the evisceration of small bodies such as that of Noah Pozner, 6, murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary, and Peter Wang, 15, killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. The Post examined the way bullets broke inside of them — obliterating Noah’s jaw and Peter’s skull, filling their chests with blood and leaving behind gaping exit wounds.
Even thinking about these injuries is horrifying, so much so that crime scene photos are often kept confidential. But the gruesome reality of what an AR-15 can wreak poses an argument in itself: There is no excuse for the widespread availability of these weapons of war.
No single action will stop mass shootings, much less gun violence more generally. The Post’s reporting is only more evidence of the need for a ban on assault rifles. It’s evidence, too, of the need for a ban on high-capacity magazines. Rules restricting how many rounds a gun can fire before a shooter has to reload are more difficult to skirt than flat-out assault rifle bans, which sometimes prompt manufacturers to make cosmetic changes that will reclassify their products. A number is a number. These prohibitions might face legal challenges, but lawmakers in four states have recently added caps. More should follow.
Think of Sutherland Springs, where the shooter, armed with a Ruger AR-556, got off 450 military-grade bullets within minutes, killing 25 people including a pregnant woman. Think of Dayton, where the gunman needed only 32 seconds to hit more than two dozen people with 41 bullets. That’s because he was equipped with a 100-round drum magazine. Even a 30-round magazine — the industry standard these days — would have forced him to reload at least once. A 15-round magazine would have forced him to reload twice. The Post’s analysis of the time this would have taken reveals the lives it could have saved: potentially six of the nine who were killed, in the case of a 15-round magazine.
Think, in contrast, of Poway, Calif., where a gunman killed one person at a synagogue and injured three others with a 10-round magazine before running out of bullets. Members of the congregation moved to confront him as he fumbled with another magazine, and he fled. Children who survived Sandy Hook told their parents they ran away while the assailant was “playing with his gun.” What they’d seen was plain enough. The shooter had stopped to reload.
The AR-15 has become a cultural symbol. But what kind of culture tolerates death after death after 10 murders — or after 27, or 49, or 60? Respect for the Second Amendment doesn’t require standing by while 6-year-olds are torn to shreds. The nation needs to act on guns. The AR-15 and weapons like it are a good place to start.

songs of the isle pt. 1
*The scene opens with a young man with strawberry blonde medium slicked back hair dressed in brown work boots, black jeans and a shirt that has 1958 Dracula graphic on it.
He has a large black backpack on, and he is walking through the dense forest in the night, He comes to a sudden stop as a load howl comes from behind him. He freezes only turning his head to face where the sound came from then his frozen state broken now by his hands shaking when finally seeing a large silhouette in the dark.
As the silhouette moves, its form becomes clear showing a creature on all fours before becoming a blur in the night again, but the noises of its movements only gets louder and faster. The boy’s face changes growing hair and more across his body all while his body starts expanding becoming bigger more muscular and his nails growing, and his feet break out of his boots.
The boy takes a large breath then breaks into a sprint, his feet barely touching the ground he is running faster and faster downhill the howls getting closer and spreading as more join the first silhouette closing in on the boy.
The clattering of jaws gets louder and louder as the boy’s legs push and pull harder trying not to fall, praying, pleading with any force natural or unnatural that somehow, he gets away.
Then the life returns to his face as he sees a lake with only one boat in the water like somehow a higher being knew he would need it, or some kid forgot to put it away but it that moment he only sees hope.
He runs feeling the wood of the dock under his feet while hearing the claws of his attackers digging into the wood behind him, he uses his nails to cut the rope connecting his salvation to the land and jumps high the looking like an inverted Icarus with the moon replacing the sun and his will to live his wings.
As he lands onto the boat, it gets pushed far by the force of his jump and one of his pursuer’s heads hitting and breaking a piece of the boat, he looks out toward the dock seeing the angered beasts of his past fade away with each passing*
1 year later 23/01/22
*The scene opens back up with a young person sleeping on a bench on the top floor of a Ferry, the young person has purple straight shoulder length hair and light hazel eyes. They have a blue and pink tie dye hoodie, black jogging trousers and green leather boots*
PA system: we will be docking at the Douglas harbour in proximately 15 minutes.
*The young person shoots up and sits for a couple of seconds before lying back down onto the bench then the scene cuts to the man walking off the ferry and as he gets further into the harbour. He starts to look around while standing in one place till he stops moving his head when he sees an old man with small round glasses.
He is standing next to a 2004 ford ranger dark green; he has white thinning hair and a thick beard he is dressed in a thick green waterproof trench coat, white dress shirt, dark red cardigan, khaki brown trousers, black dress shoes. As the young man gets closer, the older man walks toward him and when they meet in the middle, they hug then they both get into the car. *
Old man: ahh so how has everything been with my granddaughter.
Young man: Grandson papa, grandson
Old man: sorry still getting used to that.
*The car becomes awkward as they start driving*
Old man: sorry for not being better at this, just not something I have had to deal with before and that’s rare for someone my age (chuckles)
*They both have a slightly less awkward laugh*
Young person: I have been using Vick recently, I really like it
Papa: mmmmh, I like it
*They both smile together*
*The scene cuts out as the car drives away from our view and the scene comes back to the car parking into the driveway of a large 1930s white with black stripes house Vick and his Papa get out of the car*
Vick: I thought you guys were well off before but damn, this is nice.
Papa: Well, your Great grandfather build it
Vick: come on that’s not fair I just left school, up till now I have so much work, exams, and homework that I have just been too busy.
Papa: I know I was just teasing you
*They go inside the house together and go up the stairs to the second floor*
Vick: so, which is my room, Papa?
Papa: well, I have got a surprise for you
*Papa walks a bit further down the hallway then reaches up and grabs a string that is handing from the ceiling and pulls down a ladder*
Vick: don’t mess with me right now, Papa
Papa: you will see if you stop standing around and see your new room
*They both head up the ladder one at a time to show a large opened up room in the attic with a bed and empty bookshelves with nothing more than that*
Papa: so, what do you think, I know it’s a bit empty but we thought you would like the opportunity to put your own spin on the place
*Vick hugs his Papa*
Vick: its perfect, thank you.

My favorite color is Green.
I need glasses, but I don't like wearing them.
I grew up watching Charmed, Supernatural, and Gilmore Girls.
I was named after a Charmed character, and when I came out I changed my name to be the masculine equivalent of that character's name.
I have loved Greek Mythology since I was eight. My favorite God is Apollo and my favorite Goddess is Artemis.
I love dinosaurs, my favorite is the T-rex.
I find Plesiosaurs interesting.
My chosen middle names are Douglas and Marcus. (Like the Lab Rats characters.)
One time my cousin went camping with my mom and I and we tried to get a bird to come towards us by trying to mimic the noises it was making.
In fifth grade I faceplanted in front of a Dollar General because I wasn't looking where I was going and tripped. (My mom thought my nose was broken and my brother laughed at me.)
I like to write short scary stories. (I like to have my brother read them out loud to me and tell me if they are good or not.)
When I was around four or five I accidentally lit a trash can on fire.
I had the purple unicorn pillow pet.
I had a dog named Trixie, whenever my brother and I would eat Trix before school we would say 'Silly Trixie, Trix are for kids!' and laugh at the stupidness of the joke.
When my oldest nephew was a baby I would move his legs around while singing the Cupid Shuffle specifically the part that goes 'to the left to the left to the left to the left to the right to the right to the right to the right now kick now kick now kick now walking by yourself now walking by yourself' to make him smile.
One of my friends drew me in the blue Dino Charge uniform on a birthday card.
The friend that drew me in the uniform and I used to pretend like we were Power Rangers with another friend.
On my aunt's birthday last year my brother and I got her a pin that said 'Birthday Boy' as a joke.
I watched Dirty Dancing for the first time when I was four with my older sister, and it is the first movie I ever remember watching.
All of these things are human. Right?
If that's the case then none of this matters, because according to some Republicans I'm not HUMAN!!!

Season 2 Deleted Scenes
2x01- They Started It
The Walker family are having dinner, all but Liam. Stella and August are asking questions about Marv Davidson. They both seem agitated, likely still reeling from the events at the school earlier in the episode. Abby confirms that she broke off her engagement to Marv 40 years ago and that he died. She explains that there was a fire in a barn that they had near the back road of the property and he didn’t survive.
Stella and August wonder why the Davidsons would return after everything that happened while the camera zooms in on Cordell as he stares at the tablecloth, lost in a memory.
We cut to a flashback. Young Cordell and Denise stand in the flaming barn, holding onto each other fearfully. Then we see the barn door. It’s locked, but someone’s hand is reaching inside. We see slender fingers, black with ash, curling around the edge of the door. Despite their ragged appearance, the nails appear manicured, like a woman’s hand.
We cut back to the present with Abby saying that there’s no need to dig up the past. Cordell’s phone buzzes and he pulls it out of his pocket. Abby asks if it’s work. He says that it’s actually Geri, who is at the Side Step along with Liam. He says that he’s going to pick his brother up and thanks Abby for the meal before getting up from the table and leaving dinner.
2x06- Douglas Fir
Cordell and Liam leave Dan Miller’s temporary lodging. Cordell comments on how he’s a long way from Davidson ranch.
Liam steers the conversation in a different direction, bringing up the previous Christmas, when Cordell had been away on the undercover mission. He says he realized earlier that day that they didn’t talk about the holidays much the previous year and kept the christmas village train set in the attic. It didn’t feel right without Cordell. But they kept things normal otherwise, for the sake of the kids. Cordell says he knew Liam held everything together while he was gone and Liam reminds him that he had to.
Liam then says he’s glad Cordell is seeing things clearly, though his tone is less than appreciative. Cordell picks up on this attitude too and stops Liam to ask him what that meant.
Liam reminds Cordell of Boyd’s statement about Dan, his criminal history. Cordell says that of course he’s taking it seriously. It’s his job as a ranger. He’d like Dan to be innocent; the Davidsons have been through enough as it is. But Dan clearly has the means and experience to do so and he would’ve had access to the truck routes through Denise. “It’s Suspect 101.”
But there’s an extra piece, Liam reminds him. Dan’s motive. Dan killed Earl, one of Seranos’ men behind the hidden camera operation. Liam says that this armored truck robbery could’ve been Dan’s way of “paying back his debt” and getting out of hot water with the North Side Nation. Cordell agrees and starts walking again. They have a job to do.
2x11- Boundaries
Scene One:
Denise sits at the dinner table in the Davidson house. It’s daylight behind her. She checks to make sure she’s alone and then opens her laptop, where she has a video open. It’s footage from Seranos’ hidden cameras. Specifically, the moment when Cordell claims the barn fire was all his fault and Abby tries to assure him otherwise. Denise watches, confusion on her face.
Scene Two:
Cassie drives a very drunk Dan Miller home from the Side Step. Laying down in the backseat, Dan rambles about how his life is crumbling to pieces. He claims that Denise and Gale were the first people that ever felt like family. Then they adopted Colton and it was all “set in stone”. But now, it was all falling apart.
Cassie asks what his plan is: to drink until it all goes away or drink until he forgets he exists. Dan says that she talks more than other rangers; they normally stay quiet, likely afraid that he’ll snitch on them to his wife. Cassie cheekily reminds him that Denise will soon be his ex-wife.
He sits up, saying that she’s not being very nice. She then says that he still has a chance if he cleans himself up. Dan thinks for a moment and says that she’s right. And he’s gonna figure out a way to show Denise what she means to him. He then thanks Cassie for her help. She says that’s what she’s here for and Dan lays back down in the seat.
2x13- One Good Thing
We see someone setting a Ranger hat down on a desk. The camera zooms out and we see that it’s Cassie. She sits down and looks around the office, apprehension, amazement, and disbelief on her face.
She reaches into the desk drawer and pulls out a sketch drawing of Cordell. This was Micki’s old desk. Looking at it makes her emotional; she may recognize it as the work of her predecessor.
In the background, Captain Larry James sees her and smiles before walking over. He’s happy to see that she’s moved into her own desk. He asks if she thinks she can live up to it. She shakes her head. “Not even a little bit, sir.”
James assures her that he thinks she can do it, especially after everything he’s already witnessed from her. Then he walks away, leaving her to process her new position.
2x19- A Matter of Miles
Cassie and James stand in his office. It’s dark outside the window.
James is asking Cassie for her opinion on Miles. She knows him better than everyone but he thinks that Miles is guilty of something. Cassie assures him that, whatever Miles is hiding, he has a good reason for it. James agrees that’s a possibility but they need Miles to come clean, now. Cassie says that she can handle that. James asks if she’s sure she’s up for it and says it’s alright if she needs to step back. Cassie declines his offer and asks him about Cole.
James thinks that Cole is at least as guilty as Miles in whatever is happening and says he’ll handle it. He then tells Cassie to do what she has to do to get Miles to talk but to stay within the lines. There’s a beat of silence, then Cassie says that she will. Then she leaves the office.
2x20- Something’s Missing
Scene One:
It’s the last day of school at Sacred Hearts High and there’s much happiness between students and parents.
Stella and Colton stand beside her car. Colton has something on his mind and Stella waits for him to speak. Colton says that it’s amazing how far their relationship as come. Stella wishes the adults in their families could take a page out of their playbook. Colton comments that at least her family loves each other.
At Stella’s questioning glance, Colton elaborates. His family is miserable. He says that ever since they moved onto the ranch, it’s been nonstop fighting. Even after Dan won the race, things haven’t calmed down. It even seems that Denise resents him for doing so. Stella can’t believe it’s that bad. Colton says that the only thing his parents can seem to agree on is keeping the feud going between the families. Stella looks sympathetic and touches his arm in a comforting manner.
Scene Two:
The ranch is decorated for Stella’s graduation party. Abby is setting out the drink glasses for the picnic table on the back porch while August takes pictures. August tries to take a picture of Abby but she stops him by putting her hands in front of her face. “No, not me!” August laughs and says they’ll look great. She laughs with him.
Abby looks behind him and asks him to grab the large, empty, mason jar drink dispenser and bring it inside. He does, but not before taking a final look at the party and smiling. The camera pans to a banner that reads “Happy Graduation Stella!”

Description: Even as a boy growing up amid the green hills of rural Pennsylvania, Robert W. Black knew he was destined to become a Ranger. With their three-hundred-year history of peerless courage and independence of spirit, Rangers are a uniquely American brand of soldier, one foot in the military, one in the wilderness—and that is what fired Black’s imagination. In this searing, inspiring memoir, Black recounts how he devoted himself, body and soul, to his proud service as an elite U. S. Army Ranger in Korea and Vietnam—and what those years have taught him about himself, his country, and our future.Born at the start of the Great Depression, Black grew up on a farm at a time of great hardship but also tremendous national determination. He was a kid who toughened up fast, who learned the hard way to rely on his strength and his wits, who saw the country go to war with Germany and Japan and wept because he was too young to serve. As soon as the army would take him, Black enlisted. And as soon as he could muscle his way in, he became a Ranger. As a private first class in the 82d Airborne Division headquarters, Black withstood the humiliations of enlisted service in the peacetime brown-shoe army. When the Korean War began, he volunteered and trained to be an Airborne Ranger. In Korea, this young warrior, his mind and body bursting with the lusts of adolescence, grew up fast, literally in the line of fire. In clean, vivid prose, Black describes the hell of giving his all for a country that lacked the political resolve to give its all to a war against the North Koreans and the Chinese. If Korea was frustrating, Vietnam was maddening. The heart of this book is devoted to the years of action that Black saw in Long An Province starting in 1967. Black writes of the perplexity of collaborating with South Vietnamese officers whose culture and motives he never fully understood; he conjures up the sudden shock of the Tet Offensive and the daily horror of seeing fellow soldiers and innocent civilians slaughtered—sometimes by stray bullets, often by carelessness or treachery. Vietnam challenged everything Black had come to believe in and left him totally unprepared for the hostility he would face when he returned to a war-weary America. Written with extraordinary candor and passion, A Ranger Born is the memoir of a man who dedicated the best of his life to everything that is great and enduring about America. At once intimate in its revelations and universal in its themes, it is a book with profound relevance to our own troubled time in history. From the Hardcover edition

He traveled to Ohio to talk with mill workers in Steubenville and Mingo Junction and to study the idiosyncrasies of their speech. He read about hunting techniques and regulations and met with Vietnam veterans, particularly former prisoners of war. Some of these veterans provided memoirs, medical and psychiatric records, and other information. The production crew watched hours of news footage of the war. De Niro also continued his practice of analyzing the screenplay and making copious notes. The spiral- bound notebook here includes not only notes made during preparations for The Deer Hunter but also notes on Raging Bull (1980), which De Niro hoped would be his next project.”

Season Six, Episode Two: Superposition
I kinda wish they'd taken DOB off the opening credits to really commit to the bit of him being gone.
This season's budget went on horsies.
Stiles' legendarily bad lacrosse skills defy being erased.
Some of the extras in this scene do not look like high school kids.
"We're gay!" - Iconique.
Why is Coach there at 9 at night as well?
Oh Corey, you've damned yourself.
Someone didn't keep their hand at the level of their eye, did they?
Wait, Ross Butler's in this episode? This is gonna be like Jordan Fisher all over again, isn't it?
Oh jeez, he's Malia's booty call, lmao.
Train station!
Lydia's mom's still playing dumb? Come on, Natalie, at some point you gotta realise that you're doing more harm than good.
Hey, Shirtless Scott, haven't seen that for a while.
This lacrosse conversation isn't about lacrosse, is it?
Coach is such a bastard, oh my god.
The triumphant return of Malia's yellow highlighter.
I swear this blue hallway is new for this season, I'm sure we've never seen it before.
The lack of Stiles does give the Puppy Pack a little more time to shine tbh.
Give Corey a break, damn. Especially since he's going to disappear permanently soon.
That sounded like Christmas carols.
Aww, Baby Scott.
Actual healthy conversation between Liam and Corey? Genuinely impressed actually.
"I think I had a best friend." :(
"I think I loved him." :((((
The helium theft was Douglas, right? Because his throat's all fucked up from the War and being in a tank for 60 years.
The Sheriff's WIFE?
Oh, that does look like the same actress for Claudia as the one in Season 3 actually. Shame she's evil.
Is Coach meant to be watching porn? Because it sounds like kung fu.
"I held a guy's hand." "I get it." - Did Coach just come out?
"What the hell is a Stiles?" - Season 1 throwback!
Mischief is the translation of Stiles' Polish name, right?
Ah, I didn't pause it in time last episode - the three main Ghost Riders are the Outlaw, the Ranger, and the Enforcer.

The Forgotten Realms – the default setting for the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game – form one of the largest, most detailed and most popular fantasy worlds ever created. It is the brainchild of Canadian writer Ed Greenwood who started developing it as a setting for fantasy stories when he was just eight years old. Ten years later he began running D&D campaigns set in the same world, and also began writing articles for Dragon Magazine. The first mention of the Realms in-print came in 1978. Over the next eight years Greenwood became a popular writer of articles for the magazine and he included plenty of hints about his own campaign world in the process.
In 1986 TSR, Inc., the publishers of D&D, were looking for a new setting. The Dragonlance setting had been an enormous success, but the feeling was that the continent of Ansalon was too small to serve as a setting for lots of stories. D&D creator Gary Gygax was also in the middle of his painful departure from TSR, which made the future use of his World of Greyhawk setting questionable. D&D needed a new “base” world.
TSR editor Jeff Grubb contacted Greenwood and asked exactly how much of the Realms had he actually created? Greenwood’s reply was, “lots.” Soon boxes were arriving at TSR HQ in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin by the score. Each box was packed full of notes, handwritten and typed, featuring information on hundreds of characters and cities, dozens of countries and countless new monsters, factions and magical items. Greenwood’s map of the main continent was divided across dozens of A4 sheets of paper which were painstakingly reassembled in the main TSR office, taking up almost every inch of free floor space. Greenwood’s map of the setting’s signature city, Waterdeep, was even larger and detailed and named almost every building. This was the Tolkien school of in-depth worldbuilding taken and expanded and applied to a continent several times the size of Middle-earth.
The slightly awed TSR bought the rights to the setting and began released it to the public in 1987. The first release was a novel, Darkwalker on Moonshae by Douglas Niles, followed by the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, or the “Big Grey Box” as it became infamously known. The Grey Box sold over 100,000 copies in short order, a staggering number for an RPG supplement. Ed Greenwood provided his own novel, Spellfire, and a few months later another book was published by a first-time novelist named R.A. “Bob” Salvatore. The Crystal Shard introduced the character Drizzt Do’Urden, a dark elven ranger seeking to atone for the sins of his entire race, and a fantasy publishing legend was born. To date, more than 30 million Drizzt novels have been sold by themselves.
The Realms grew and expanded. The continent of Kara-Tur, previously developed in 1985 for the Oriental Adventures sourcebook, was bolted to the eastern side of the Realms (with Greenwood’s blessing). The western continent of Maztica and the southern continent of Zakhara were explored in further boxed sets. Dozens of adventures and supplements explored the gods, power groups and races of the Realms in remarkable detail. In 1989 the Realms made the transition to D&D 2nd Edition through an epic campaign known as the Time of Troubles, or Avatar Wars, the first of many “Realms-shaking events” that unified a setting noted for its expanse and scope.
The setting expanded to a successful comics run and also a line of well-received video games, such as Curse of the Azure Bonds. However, it was the epic dungeon-crawler Eye of the Beholder (1991) that became a major crossover hit with general gamers and expanded the audience even further.
D&D and the Realms ran into a major problem with the collapse of TSR in 1997, during which time it was briefly possible that both would disappear altogether. However, Wizards of the Coast stepped in and bought both the game and the setting. This led to a creative renaissance for the setting, spearheaded by the hugely popular video game Baldur’s Gate (1998), the first RPG to be released by BioWare. D&D 3rd Edition arrived in 2000 and was followed by the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book in 2001, one of the most handsome RPG books ever published. Over the next seven years the Realms continued to peak in popularity, with more video games such as Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights contributing to its success.
In 2008 D&D launched its 4th edition, but the surprising decision was made to effectively destroy the Realms, turning it into a kind of post-apocalyptic, high-concept setting. The decision was vehemently rejected by the overwhelming majority of Realms fans; sales of the 4th Edition D&D and Forgotten Realms material were disappointing and the setting spent several years in the doldrums until 2014, when Wizards of the Coast launched D&D 5th Edition. A streamlined, back-to-basics version of the game, it proved an immediate, huge hit. Even more notable was that, for the very first time, the Forgotten Realms was now the default setting for the D&D game. The new setting rolled back most of the disastrous changes from 4th Edition and restored some faith and popularity in the setting.
There are still some worlds left unconquered. A Forgotten Realms movie is in development for release in 2021 or 2022, and Larian Studios are working to relaunch the video game line with the eagerly-awaited Baldur’s Gate III. After a short hiatus, the novel line has been relaunched by R.A. Salvatore with a new run of Drizzt books, although there seem to be no plans for more material at the moment. And, watching over it all, remains Ed Greenwood, who still insists he has far more unpublished notes and setting material than has ever been seen formal print. On that basis, the Realms will be around for a long time to come.
Tumblr media
Mapping the Realms
Greenwood’s original map of the Realms focused on the continent of Faerûn, extending west to the island of Evermeet; south to the jungles of Chult and the island of Nimbral beyond; east to Semphar and the Horse Plains; and north to the towering Spine of the World mountain range and the Endless Ice Sea beyond. He had little notion of what lay elsewhere in the world, except for a huge island chain to the north-west called Anchôromé.
Other writers and editors soon expanded the setting. The 1985 Oriental Adventures book by Dave “Zeb” Cook had detailed an Asia-like land called Kara-Tur. This was retconned (and shrunk in the process) into the eastern half of the continent in the Kara-Tur: The Eastern Realms boxed set (1988). In 1990 the Horde boxed set explored the Tuigan plains which linked the two subcontinents. In 1991, the Maztica Campaign Set added a new continent far to the west of Faerûn. In 1992 the Al-Qadim sub-setting was launched, detailing the lands of Zakhara to the south of Faerûn.
Through all of these boxed sets, adventures and campaign guides, maps were a constant feature. Not just maps of the continents and landmasses, but maps of individual countries, cities, streets and even individual buildings. The City System (1988) set contains a colossal map of Waterdeep which is too big to fit inside most average-sized homes, and names virtually every building in the city. The Forgotten Realms is almost certainly the most heavily-mapped fantasy world in existence, with literally thousands of maps existing of its various locations.
Despite that, a full, canonical world map of the entire planet of Abeir-toril had to wait until the release of the Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas (1999) on CD-ROM. The atlas featured almost every single map from every single Realms product ever released plus lots of new ones, and also a complete world map which added multiple new continents to the planet. Ed Greenwood would later reveal some new information on these continents, but, twenty years later, they have still received scant development compared to the originals.
The first-ever canonical world map of Toril, from the long out-of-print Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas (1999) by ProFantasy.
A New Map of Toril
My new map of Toril depicts the planet as it stood between the 2nd and 3rd Editions of the setting. When 3rd Edition setting was released in 2001, the map-makers chose to shrink the main continent of Faerûn to remove empty space in the south; given that Faerûn was never the biggest fantasy continent in the first place, sometimes straining credulity given how packed it was, this was unnecessary and was eventually reversed in 5th Edition.
4th Edition, much more controversially, blew up the continent in a magical catastrophe known as the Spellplague and completely reshaped it. Fortunately, most of these changes were promptly abandoned in 5th Edition, which restored the continent to its former glory.
To create this map, I used a base model from my twenty-year-old copy of the Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas (this also inspired some colour choices, particularly for the mountains) and information from canon sources and from some of the better fan maps out there. A more detailed map of Faerûn will – hopefully! – follow, although it will be considerable work.

The World of Abeir-toril
The world of the Forgotten Realms is an Earth-sized planet called Abeir-toril, “Cradle of Life” in Auld Wyrmish. Toril is the third of eight planets in its star system, and it possesses one large satellite, Selûne, and dozens of smaller satellites, asteroid-sized bodies called the Tears of Selûne.
Toril is divided between one very large continental landmass, almost big enough to qualify as a supercontinent, and three other continent-sized bodies. Five large island-continents and thousands of smaller continents are also known to exist.
The main continental landmass is divided into three lesser continents or subcontinents:
Faerûn is located in the west of this landmass, running from the Endless Ice Sea to the Great Sea and from the Trackless Sea to the Tuigan Plains (or Hordelands) in the east. Faerûn is the original and principle setting for the Forgotten Realms campaign and by far the area of the planet with the most development. Faerûn vaguely resembles Europe and the Near and Middle-East in the medieval period, with the landlocked Sea of Fallen Stars serving as a Mediterranean analogue.
Kara-Tur is located to the east of Faerûn and is the home of the mostly-defunct Oriental Adventures and Living Jungle sub-settings. It is an Asian-inspired land of vast empires, huge cities and adventure. Kara-Tur is the home of the largest nation on Toril, the Shou Lung Empire, and the tallest mountain range, the Yehimal, which is even taller than the Himalayas.
Zakhara, the Land of Fate, lies south of Faerûn and south-west of Kara-Tur. The home of the Al-Qadim sub-setting, it is a land of vast, boiling deserts and cities clustered around oases and bays. Zakhara is inspired by the mythology of Arabia. The largest single city on the planet, Golden Huzuz, can be found in Zakhara.
In addition, several other continents can be found elsewhere in the world:
Maztica, the True World, lies to the west of Faerûn across the Trackless Sea. It is inspired by Aztec and Mayan mythology and consists of jungles, volcanoes and deserts. North of Maztica lies a land of open plains more reminiscent of the American West, although this area has not been explored much in canon materials.
Katashaka lies to the south of Maztica and consists of steaming, hot jungles inhabited by various hostile lizardfolk. Katashaka seems to have been inspired by South America, but it has received relatively little development so far.
Ossë is a large landmass lying to the east of Kara-Tur. It is quite hot, sparsely-populated and has not yet been explored in detail in any canon materials. Based on the limited information available, it appears to be a supersized version of Australia.
There are numerous islands of note in the world, the most famous of which are Evermeet, the home of the elves located far across the Trackless Sea; the Moonshae Isles off the coast of Faerûn; Lantan, the land of engineers and tinkerers; Nimbral, the mysterious Sea-Haven; the islands of Anchôromé off the coast of Maztica; Wa and Kozakura off the coast of Kara-Tur; and the large island-continents of Myrmidune, Tabaxiland, Aurune and Braaklosia, about which relatively little has been revealed.

Blu-ray Review: The Blob
Tumblr media
Horror fans have been known to dismiss remakes outright - an understandable, if misguided, reaction to the trend that dominated cinemas in the mid-2000s - but we cannot forget that three of the strongest genre offerings of the 1980s are remakes. The Thing, The Fly, and The Blob all offered fresh takes on 1950s sci-fi/horror mashups, elevated by strong characters and innovative special effects. While The Blob isn't held in quite as high regard as The Thing or The Fly, it's worthy of praise not only as a remake that improves on the original but also as a thoroughly entertaining movie that can stand on its own.
The 1988 remake of the 1958 cult classic is directed by Chuck Russell (The Mask, The Scorpion King) from a script he co-wrote with Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), fresh off their successful collaboration on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. They handle the material masterfully, delivering a roller coaster ride of a film that includes a particularly inspired homage to the original picture's iconic movie theater sequence.
Tumblr media
When a meteorite crash-lands in the rural town of Arborville, it unleashes an amorphous mass of pink slime that continuously grows as it consumes the townspeople. After witnessing the carnage of the predatory life-form firsthand, three high school students - preppy cheerleader Meg (Shawnee Smith, Saw), her football player date, Paul (Donovan Leitch, Cutting Class), and the local bad boy with a heart of gold, Brian Flagg (Kevin Dillon, Entourage) - unwittingly become responsible for saving the town.
The Blob is a blend of science fiction and horror, like its predecessor, but this incarnation ramps up the action and add some welcome levity. Well aware of the cheesy, B-movie reputation of the original film, Russell and Darabont embrace the outlandish premise, but they smartly never poke fun at the threat. Instead, the well-paced humor stems from the characters and their situations. ("Ribbed!" remains a laugh-out-loud line.) Russell's clever direction extends to the editing, like a hard cut from the blob's first attack to a closeup on jello being slurped up.
Tumblr media
Shrewdly eschewing the obvious Steve McQueen-type leading man of the original film, this version of The Blob features an ensemble cast populated by character actors, including Jeffrey DeMunn (The Walking Dead), Candy Clark (American Graffiti), Art La Fleur (Cobra), Beau Billingslea (Halloween H20), Paul McCrane (RoboCop), Robert Axelrod (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Bill Moseley (The Devil's Rejects), Billy Beck (House), Douglas Emerson (Beverly Hills, 90210), Jamison Newlander (The Lost Boys), Jack Nance (Eraserhead), and Second City comedian Del Close.
But the true star of the movie is its namesake. The ambitious, practical special effects - a mix of miniature and full-scale effects - remain convincing three decades later, even under the scrutiny of high definition. They were painstakingly created by Tony Gardner (Seed of Chucky, The Addams Family), with the creature designed by Lyle Conway (Little Shop of Horrors, The Dark Crystal), and visual effects supervised by Hoyt Yeatman (The Abyss, The Fly), expertly captured by cinematographer Mark Irwin (Scream, The Fly).
Tumblr media
The special effects become even more impressive after watching the hours of supplemental features on Scream Factory's The Blob Collector's Edition Blu-ray. Various artists who worked on the creature detail the trouble it took to bring it to life, including second unit shoots that occured as late as three months prior to the film's release. The picture's existing high-definition transfer is crisp and clear, and the release features reversible artwork with a new design by Joel Robinson (who nails Dillon's signature mullet) on one side and the original poster on the other.
Three audio commentaries are included. Filmmaker Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem) moderates a new track with Russell, Irwin, and Gardner. Lynch emphatically cites The Blob as the movie that made him want to be a filmmaker, which he proves with his encyclopedic knowledge as he leads an enthusiastic, friendly conversation. Another new commentary finds Smith watching the film for the first time since the '80s alongside moderator Justin Beahm (who produced the disc's extras). Comparatively laid back following the excitable Lynch, it's fun to hear the actress' memories come flooding back. The third commentary, ported over from Twilight Time's long-sold-out 2014 Blu-ray, features Russell sharing a plethora of anecdotes with moderator Ryan Turek (then a journalist, now a producer at Blumhouse).
Tumblr media
There's also a whopping eleven new interviews, beginning with a two-parter with Russell totalling over 45 minutes. The first segment traces his early career, from a theater kid in Chicago to his big break directing A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, while the second half focuses on The Blob. Actors Leitch, DeMunn (whose video features minor focus and color issues), Clark, and Moseley (whose first exposure to the horror genre was the original The Blob) each relish the opportunity to discuss their early creative work before fondly reminiscing about The Blob.
There's also interviews with Irwin, who compares and contrasts The Blob with his work on The Fly; Gardner, who elaborates on the effects team's challenges; special effects supervisor Christopher Gilman; mechanical designer Mark Setrakian; blob mechanic Peter Abrahamson; and production designer Craig Stearns, who also talks about working on Halloween. Finally, the disc includes 28 minutes of previously unreleased behind-the-scenes footage of Tony Gardner and his special effects team working on The Blob, plus theatrical trailers, a TV spot, and a still gallery.
The Blob is available on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray now via Scream Factory.

Season 2 Episode 6
A midseason finale with a pile of angst tall enough to put a “Douglas Fir” to shame.
This one took me a while to process and honestly I’m still not completely over it so forgive me if this review is a bit messy.
In a complete break in pattern to how I usually do things, I’m gonna talk about the lighthearted stuff first and work my way up the Angst Ladder.
So August was signed up to play piano at the school holiday party. Unfortunately for him, the fall from the Davidson’s barn messed up his shoulder badly enough that he couldn’t even move it enough to play the piano. Colton sees his struggle and offers to help him out in exchange for some piano lessons. August agrees and they end up performing on stage at the end of the party, earning praise from the whole crowd (especially Denise and Faye). I like that the kids have worked through their initial issues and I hope we see them become better friends in the future.
August did have to come clean to Cordell about his shoulder injury and how he got it because of how much it was hindering him. Thankfully, Cordell went easy on him. I do love the idea that August is incapable of lying to his dad because he’s easy to read though.
Also the Bah-Humbug Bonham story was cute. I loved him showing up as Santa at the end. A sweet way to end a very rocky episode.
Micki and Trey are next up on the list. Their plotline started off pretty well and I was irritated at the promo for misleading us after this first scene. Micki inisted on talking about Garrison, even after Trey tried to put it off.  She even ignored a call from Cordell, something that she would normally gladly use as a diversion. She toldTrey the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about Garrison. It’s easy to see how much this had been weighing on her, even before Trey closed the door on her. She even admits that she doesn’t know who she is anymore after eveything she’s been through lately. Trey was obviously sympathetic towards her emotions and it seemed like they had everything worked out.
But then, at the holiday party, Micki learns about what Trey was doing while she was undercover. It starts off innocently enough with the teachers gushing about how great and helpful he was. Then he confessed to her that the reason he signed up to do all those things was to distract himself from her being gone and what that might mean for their relationship. She asked him to elaborate and pushed when he was reluctant. So he told her that he found the timing of her urgent undercover mission to be awfully convenient, as things were just starting to get real and permanent between them. She’s insulted by this claim at first and reminds him that there’s a chaing of command that she has to follow. He counters and gets her to admit her leaving was her own decision, not an order. This causes her to leave the table and they don’t reunite until much later, when they finally break up. It wasn’t something either of them wanted to do but they could both admit that they should. Micki needed to go back home and figure out who she was and what she really wanted and she couldn’t keep jerking Trey around while she did that.
I honestly teared up a bit during the scene in Ranger HQ where she prepared to leave. We see her leaving a note for Cordell on his desk and her gun and badge on her own. James saw her and all but begged her to stay. Cordell wasn’t far behind and he blamed her leaving on him not being a good enough partner. Ultimately though, her decision was made and a tearful goodbye was shared between the trio.
Thank you, Lindsey Morgan, for bringing Micki Ramirez to life. You were a blessing on my screen and I hope to see you again one day.
At long last, we’ve reached the main plot of the episode.
Early on this fine day, three men in reindeer masks with guns and a blowtorch corndered a forensics van holdign evidence against Serranos and steal it from the driver. Denise went to the Walker ranch after hearing abotu this and enlisted Cordell and Liam to locate the van, claiming that if she went down herself no one would talk to her. They agree and head out witht he case file.
Coming off of the last episode, both brothers claim to be 100% cool with each other but it became clear that it would take more than a Brother Parallel to fix eveything between them. Things were perfectly fine until Dan Miller’s name was tossed in the ring as a suspect. Their attitudes toward the case shift dramatically and in very opposite directions, with Liam going on the offensive and Cordell trying to rein him in. Once again, we had Liam making accussations and Cordell dismissing them. It isn’t until Liam opened up about the trauma he was still dealing with after nearly dying to Clint’s bullet that Cordell was willing to listen. Cordell agreed to trust Liam’s instincts but insisted that Liam needed to trust him as well.
In the end, Dan was proved innocent after a helpful tip from Gale about some meth heads buying a blowtorch. While the case was solved in the episode, there are still a lot of questions in the air about Dan Millier and what exactly he was doing with all that money in plastic bags and, more importantly, why he was hiding it from Denise. (I am gonna call out the promo for being misleading her about the context of Codell’s comment on being through with the peacemaker gig though. Not cool.)
Unfortunately, the brother’s issues did not end there as on the way home, they come across Dan and Gale surrounded by police cars. Cordell wondered what was going on as Dan was cleared as a suspect hours before hand and he hadn’t called anyone out. Liam insisted they keep driving and that it probably wasn’t important, which only served to make Cordell suspicious. After some prodding, Liam admitted to Cordell that earlier that day, he secretly called in a false warrant on Dan’s truck. Cordell got angry with him and left the truck to sort out the issue, leaving Liam alone with his guilt. Later, Liam went to Denise and told her what happened. We didn’t get to see the end result of this confession but it most certainly won’t be good.
This was a whirlwind of an episode for me, as one would expect from a mid-season finale. Walker will be back on January 13th and I am anxious to see what happens next. What will become of Liam’s career after his screw up here? What about his relationship with Cordell? How will this affect their relationship with the Davidsons and will that spill over to the kids? How will Trey deal with the breakup? And, most importantly, will we find out what really happened during the barn fire?
Until then, my friends.

LA Confidential - nice read and pictures 👌
Tumblr media
Corduroy jacket, $2,730, and pants, $795, both at Ermenegildo Zegna; rollneck sweater, $185, by Mr P. at mrporter.com
Oh, it was such a sleepy, idyllic town until Armie Hammer came along with those chiseled charms of his. Eighteen months ago, the Italian city of Crema drew occasional visitors for its sweet ravioli and the Gothic 17th-century bell tower in the piazza. But then something positively scandalous happened involving an overripe hollowed-out peach, and Crema was anonymous no more. 😄
If you’ve seen Call Me By Your Name, you’re aware of the indelible moment in which Hammer plays erotic muse to last year’s juiciest moment in film. To sidestep spoilers, let’s just say that Timothée Chalamet, Hammer’s young costar in the coming-of-age drama, discovered a fruit-forward way of quenching his desire for Hammer’s character. Heaps of award nominations (including a Golden Globe nod for Hammer’s performance) and a global invasion of drosophilalike movie tourists followed.
“I went back to Crema after Call Me By Your Name had already come out, and walked into the duomo, which had been so calm and lovely when we filmed,” Hammer, 32, says, shaking his head a little in the courtyard of a Hollywood hotel. At 6 feet, 5 inches with bright blue eyes and a polished smile, the movie star in the conversation is impossible to mistake for someone else. “A few girls were standing together looking at their phones, and one of them looked up at me and just went, ‘Holly f---! There he is!’ And I thought, That’s it. Everything’s different here now.”

You could say that about Hammer too. The actor noticed a change at the Oscars last year. The first time he attended, in 2011, to support The Social Network (through the magic of split screens, Hammer played both of the Winklevoss twins, who claimed the Facebook idea was theirs), he felt lost in the blur. “You’re on the red carpet looking around at all the insanity going, ‘What the hell?’” he says. “It was like being in a car accident.” But last year, the experience was one to savor. “I walked into a situation where suddenly I’d done a lot of work with a bunch of different people, and it was all, ‘Hey, how are you?’ ‘Oh, wow, great to see you.’ ‘Isn’t this fantastic?’”
Hammer’s orbit continues to widen. This season, he appears opposite Felicity Jones and Justin Theroux in On the Basis of Sex, a biopic directed by Mimi Leder about the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Hammer plays Marty Ginsburg, a husband-of-the-century type who cooked and cleaned, and also argued cases alongside his wife in support of her pioneering legal career. “I talked to a lot of Marty’s law students and family members, and said, ‘Be totally honest—he couldn’t have been as great a guy as we’re making him out to be,’ and they all said, ‘You’re right. He was better.’ What the hell do you do with that as an actor?” Hammer obviously figured it out: The role is getting early Oscars buzz in the best supporting actor category.
Hammer portrays another dedicated family man in Hotel Mumbai, based on the terrorist attacks in 2008 at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in India. It costars Dev Patel. Hammer’s character has to make a Sophie’s Choice-style decision about whether to protect his wife or the child he’s separated from. The production shot in Adelaide, Australia, shortly after Hammer wrapped on those magical months in the Italian countryside. “I went from riding a bicycle in paradise and drinking wine at lunch to getting chased down the hallway by guys with machine guns,” he says. “At a certain point, you just go, ‘Acting is a really weird job.’”

Replica leather trench, $4,980, by Maison Margiela at Barneys New York; classic T-shirt, $335, at Louis Vuitton; wool trousers, $225, by Mr P. atmrporter.com; L.U.C XPS 1860 timepiece in rose gold, $21,700, by Chopard at Neiman Marcus; Tyler lace-up boots, $318, at Frye.
On the surface, you would think Hammer could have chosen any career—or none at all—and done quite well for himself. It’s not just that he clearly won the DNA lottery; he’s good-looking enough to attract giddy triple-takes even among the blasé hipsters at the hotel. But Hammer is also—brace yourself if you haven’t heard—part of a storied dynasty. His great-grandfather was the Russian-American petroleum baron and philanthropist Armand Hammer, whose name is emblazoned upon buildings and institutions such as the Hammer Museum and Armand Hammer Golf Course in Los Angeles. This is the tycoon who traded caviar and furs with Vladimir Lenin in exchange for American wheat shipments and later bought the company that manufactures Arm & Hammer baking soda, mainly because he got a kick out of the name. Google around and you’ll see images of adorable little Armie—born Armand Douglas Hammer—on Great-grandpa’s private jet.
What’s interesting is how the family legacy shook out. Armie’s parents, Michael Armand Hammer and Dru Ann Mobley, now divorced, relocated the family to the Cayman Islands from Texas and Los Angeles when Armie was 7 and his younger brother, Viktor, was 5. Although the Hammers are mostly of Jewish descent, Armie’s parents identified as Christian evangelicals, and, while in the Caymans, founded Grace Christian Academy, which the Hammer boys attended, and the Christian Communications Association, a not-for-profit Christian radio station. When Armie announced he wanted to pursue a life in show business and left high school to follow his acting dreams, he was effectively disowned for the decision. Ironically, Hammer’s first significant role, at 22, was in a biopic of the young Billy Graham. “When I first got into this, the reaction was basically, ‘Are you out of your mind?’” Hammer says. “But when [my parents] saw how hard I was willing to work and how passionate I was, and that this wasn’t just a fad, they said, ‘OK, we get it.’”
Hammer insists he’s been independent financially since he was 19, and that’s been a prime motivator as he’s shouldered his way through hits and misses (The Lone Ranger and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. were supposed to be his megabudgeted star vehicles; they weren’t.) “I’m so thankful that from a young age, I’ve never had to take anything from anybody. You never get to take money without something attached to it, so I didn’t want those encumbrances. I wanted to live my life without anyone telling me what to do, and that’s meant everything.”

Hammer and his wife of eight years, food TV personality Elizabeth Chambers, have a daughter, Harper, 4, and son, Ford, 2, who travel on locations with Hammer when he’s not dadding around L.A. “I do a good portion of the school runs, and I cook breakfast for everybody every morning because it’s not like I have a 9-to-5—and also, I love it,” says Hammer, who collects vintage typewriters and won’t say no to a good cupcake (the couple owns two high-end bakeries in San Antonio, where Chambers grew up, and Dallas).
In between the cooking and baking, Hammer finds time for Hollywood. This year, he appears opposite Dakota Johnson in a horror-thriller by British-Iranian director Babak Anvari. “I play an empty shell of a man who works at a dead-end job at a dive bar in New Orleans, which was surprisingly enjoyable to do,” Hammer says. He’s also starring in a remake of Rebecca, Alfred Hitchcock’s first Hollywood film, with Lily James. The film shoots in London, which, unlike that serene village in Italy from Call Me By Your Name, maybe—just maybe—can handle “the Hammer effect.”

Color my world
Fandom: Pete’s Dragon
Pairing: Gavin Magary x Reader
Soulmate AU
Words 2233
Plot  You will be able to see the world in full color once you meet your soulmate but until then, you can only see the world in the eye color of your soulmate. However, you can alter the color your soulmate can see, for example, by wearing contact lenses. Like if you wear blue contact lenses, your soulmate sees the world in blue, purple makes them see the world in purple and etc. And you realize each day/week you get to see the world in a different color because your soulmate is being all cute and would want you to see every color there is and they probably have a huge collection of contact lenses by the time you both meet.
A/N: This is my entry for @bookcaseninja‘s soulmate AU challenge. I hope you like it. I flipped the prompt and made the reader the one who has the contact lenses because Karl’s eye color is beautiful and changes sometimes on its own. I’m also happy i found this site to help https://www.millhaven.nz/

‘’(Y/N) could you come to my office for a second?’’ Your boss called for you. His tone suggested the urgency of whatever was happening. Your anxiety caused you to start making scenarios in your head even though you were one of the best forest rangers in the city.
You were born and raised in Portland. Both your parents used to work as park rangers so you decided to follow in their footsteps. During your training, you fell in love with the forest due to how beautiful the trees look from your view. You hadn’t found your soulmate yet so you couldn’t see the world in full color, you could only see the color of your soulmate’s eyes. And you got lucky in that department.
Whoever he was, one thing is certain. He has gorgeous eyes. It is not just a color you see every day. His eyes are a breathtaking mixture of green and hazel and those two colors change occasionally to create another unique sight. You assumed that depended on the light and you hoped to meet him soon to tell him how beautiful his eyes are. And if he had guessed how many contact lenses you own.
Due to your eye color being one tone you thought that he would have been bored to see just that for so many years. Therefore, you came up with a little trick to reimburse him. You bought a variety of lenses in every color available in the eyewear store. Your soulmate had given you the opportunity to see the world in a variety of colors and you would pay him back the same way. That’s how you started changed them every week. You had used almost two thousand so far.
‘’Is there something wrong Bill?’’ You closed the door behind you in case you were being reprimanded for something.
‘’Depends on how you take it.’’ He pointed at a chair across from him and continued after you sat down.
‘'We received a request from the Millhaven department. One of their rangers is about to take a maternity leave and they need someone to fill in for her.’’ He gave you some a moment to process the information.
‘’And you are thinking of sending me or did they specifically ask for a woman?’’ You asked while contemplating whether you would agree to move or not.
‘’They didn’t. What they did ask though was for someone who can facilitate a safety program, train volunteers and be good with kids on a school trip about the forest. Not only you are one of the few who ticks all the boxes, you are the best at each one of them.    He stood up from his chair and gave you a piece of paper.
‘’I would like you to ponder about it and let me know within the week. Millhaven is in Douglas County only five hours from here. They are expecting someone as soon as possible.’’ He handed you the message they have received from Millhaven asking for a ranger.
You saw the message and you immediately felt like you needed that transfer. Maybe a change of scenery would help you figure out how to find your soulmate, or even better he could be in this new city.
‘’I won’t need a week. I was already thinking of taking some time off to go on a trip so maybe getting to see a new place and experience life in a quieter town can be relaxing for me. I will start packing tonight so let them know I will be there tomorrow and that I can start the day after.’’
As you were driving you were sightseeing. Your sight once again changed. The green you were used to seeing had become deeper and the hazel was almost nowhere to be found. You were fascinated by the colors and combining it with the view along the road you were happy to be traveling. Something inside you made you believe you were closer to him.
You reached Millhaven in the afternoon and after settling in the Forest Lodge you visited the chief of the forest rangers to familiarize yourself with the department before starting the next day.
The chief was glad to see your enthusiasm and that you were willing to get to work. He informed you about some basic rules and regulations and the girl you will be replacing would fill you in on all the details the next day. She had work to do at the forest tending to a wounded animal the lumberjacks found.
You met her the next morning waiting for you. She had brought cupcakes to welcome you with. You were pleasantly surprised nobody commented on your unusual eye color.
‘’Hi (Y/N) nice to meet you. I’m Grace Magary the ranger you will be replacing obviously.’’ She caressed her baby bump.
‘’Nice to meet too. How far along are you?’’ You already like her because she seemed trustworthy and glowing from the pregnancy.
‘’I am due on about three weeks. My leave starts on Monday so we get two days to work together so I can show you around and prepare you for the job. I heard the best from your boss when he called to let us know you were coming.’’
She explained everything you needed to know. Millhaven was a small town so you wouldn’t be too busy. Your duties would be almost the same as they had been back in Portland so your adjustment was bound to be smooth. You told her that you already felt right at home there and that you would love to be able to see everything in their natural color.
Grace wanted to learn a few more things about you so she invited you to have dinner at her home. Her husband had chaperoned their kids on a school trip and she needed the company.
‘’How you been living here your whole life?’’ You asked your host while enjoying the delicious food she has prepared for you.
‘’Yes, I never even thought of moving. This town is small but it’s my home. I wouldn’t give up the relationship I have with the people here for anything. And the forest is absolutely breathtaking. You will get to experience it tomorrow.’’
‘’The chief told me about the new road flares we will be testing. And doing so in a clearing in the forest means that if something goes wrong, we will be able to put out the fire.’’ You looked at Grace to see if she understood that you were clearly joking.
‘’Hope that doesn’t happen. It would just be more work for us.’’ She cackled and adjusted her seat due to back pain.
‘’So (Y/N), I don’t want to pry in your business that you mentioned earlier that you still only see one color. You haven’t found your soulmate yet, have you? You know, that was rude, you don’t have to answer.’’
‘’It’s ok. No, I haven’t yet but I have a feeling it will occur soon. At least I’m lucky to see the world in the most scenic combination of colors.’’
Grace seems interested so you carried on.
‘’My soulmate’s eyes are green and hazel but that sometimes changes. Maybe it depends on the light or his mood. That’s why I wear contacts. I felt blessed to see something wonderful and I felt bad that he would be stuck seeing (Y/EC). I change it every week. The optician labeled them so I won’t wear the same twice.’’
‘’How long have you been doing that? It’s so sweet of you.’’
‘’Since I was twelve. I had a difficult time at first but I managed it. He is worth it.’’
The next day went by uneventful, waiting for the flares to arrive. Thankfully Grace made sure to give you another little tour of the town, to make sure you won’t get too bored.
The flares had arrived when you showed up the third day but you couldn’t find Grace. According to the boss she had a rough morning due to an allergy she had developed during her pregnancy and stayed home. You wondered if someone would accompany you to test the flares but nobody was available. Besides you were trained and trustworthy to handle it by yourself according to the boss.
Or that’s what he thought.
You had been given ten boxes to test two flares of each one. The first few times worked as expected. However, you found a defective one in a way you would never forget.
You looked around to check if anyone was close so that they won’t get scared. Nobody was close enough but you failed to hear footsteps approaching you.
Gavin was working on a part of the forest and when he had his break he decided to walk around. The clearing was his favorite spot since he was a little kid. He used to play there with his brothers throwing water balloons at each other. It was his idea because every time their mother reprimanded them, they claimed to water the forest that way.
He heard a noise and when he tried to see what it was a bright light came out of nowhere blinding him. He didn’t know what was happening and he feared that he could be dying.
The brightness wouldn’t have blinded you too if you didn’t wear protective goggles. A horrifying sound came from next to you followed by a loud bang. You turned around and saw Gavin unconscious on the ground. You run and asked him if he can hear you. When he didn’t respond, you began first aid by checking his breathing and pulse. Since no CPR was needed you called an ambulance, packed the flares and followed Gavin to the hospital.
Only when you made sure he was being treated by a doctor, you sat down and realized you could see all the colors. That handsome man you had sent to the hospital was your soulmate. You had no idea how to feel, happy for finding him or terrified he would be angry at you.
When you returned the flares to the station and filed a quick report, you spotted Grace. She seemed nervous but you couldn’t wait to share the news with her.
‘’I thought you were supposed to be resting, what brings you back here?’’
‘’I needed to take care of some files before I take my maternity leave. But I will be out of your way in no time.’’
‘’No, please stay. I need to tell someone what happened today.’’ You waited for her to sit and get comfortable before continuing.
‘’I found my soulmate...Well not exactly found since I sent him to the hospital but I'm sure he is the one.’’ You couldn't stop smiling even though you were sure he wouldn’t share your feelings.
‘’I heard about that when the doctor called me. You see the person you blinded, his name is Gavin Magary.’’ You stared at her with eyes wide open in an expression of stunned surprise.
‘’Magary? As in....?’’ You looked at her hoping that she wouldn’t say what you were thinking of.
‘’No, (Y/N) no. He is not my husband, he is my brother in law. They just called me because Jack is still away with the kids. I am so happy for you.’’ She hugged you and instructed you to visit Gavin when he wakes up.
Two days later you were standing next to him when he opened his eyes and moaned due to his head hurting.
‘’Try not to move around much I will call the doctor to check on you.’’
‘’Thank you, but who are you?’’
‘’We will talk afterward, now let me find your doctor.’’
His eyes were thankfully not damaged and his head would be fine eventually.
‘’You are my soulmate, aren’t you? I had been seeing this shade of grey for a few days. Nice to finally meet you.’’
‘’I’m (Y/N) and I’m the one responsible for blinding you. I’m so sorry about that I really didn’t hear you.’’
‘’Don’t worry, the doctor informed me about the flare you were testing and that you gave me first aid. Besides, you have been so cute to allow me to see so many colors that I would forgive everything you would do. Missed your natural one though I would love to see it again. Did you just move here?’’
‘’Yes, I was sent to fill in for Grace during her absence.’’ His face fell knowing you would go back to wherever you were from.
‘’However, I am sure that if I found something or someone to make me want to stay here I can work out an arrangement. Grace assured me they can hire one more ranger and my boss in Portland can find a replacement easily.’’
‘’Well, I will be in the hospital for a few more days. But what do you say, that I show you around when I get discharged? You can show me your collection of contact lenses and I can find something that you would want to stay around for.’’
‘’I believe I already found that.’’ You kissed his cheek and he leaned forward to give you the most passionate kiss you had ever experienced. And at that moment, you felt like everything stood still. You knew that you had found the person you were looking for.
