Ok, ever since I heard about the ExFog system I had to try it out. (Thank you @dr-lynne for making a post about it, thus bringing it into my orbit!)
So here's my review:
Firstly I should point out that the ExFog was listed as out of stock on their website, so I had to purchase one from Amazon for about 65usd, so keep that in mind going forward.
Secondly, I have not done rigorous testing. I have only worn it around my house and not outside in the summer heat. I did to a quick workout to work up a bit of a sweat and heavy breathing, but that still wouldn't account for outdoor humidity.
That being said, I do really like the ExFog. It's pretty small, so it's easy to hide; very quiet, any amount of background noise will drown out the sound of the fan; and not too complicated to set up and use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see the tubes hide against the ski mask extremely well. You can barely even see them from the front! The size of the machine is just right to hide under the hat, and it comes with three different ways to attatch it to your person. It has a headlight like strap that is designed to make the machine sit at the back of your head. It also comes with a loose bit of Velcro that you can stick onto whatever you want to attach to; I chose this option to attach mine to the top of my ski mask. The third option is...
Tumblr media
Well it's certainly something. (I double checked the parts list and that said it's a T band, but honestly I have no clue how this is supposed to attach to anything). But never the less, multiple attachment options are always good.
As I stated previously, this thing is very quiet. Obviously I can hear it pretty well, seeing as it is literally attached to the top of my head, but the hustle and bustle of a local con or renfest will completely drown it out.
Setup was incredibly simple. All you have to do is snap on one of the custom manifolds (where the aquarium tubing attaches to the machine), shove the tubing on, cut it to your desired length, and then repeat for the other air nozzle on the other side, and you're ready to go!
All in all, this thing seems to work great! Although I haven't tested it outside in a humid environment, it has been exemplary in it's duty to remove and prevent fog. I will have to put it through more tests, but so far it's great. However the 65 dollar price tag can be a little steep.

It's such a small moment, but the fact that Mrs. Norris tries to get Tom to play cards by suggesting they will up the ante for him, but only against Dr. Grant, is such a complex and horrible thing
“My dear Tom,” cried his aunt soon afterwards, “as you are not dancing, I dare say you will have no objection to join us in a rubber; shall you?” Then leaving her seat, and coming to him to enforce the proposal, added in a whisper, “We want to make a table for Mrs. Rushworth, you know. Your mother is quite anxious about it, but cannot very well spare time to sit down herself, because of her fringe. Now, you and I and Dr. Grant will just do; and though we play but half-crowns, you know, you may bet half-guineas with him.”
Firstly, Mrs. Norris must be aware that Tom has a gambling problem, she was around when Sir Thomas sold the Mansfield living. In order to flatter Mrs. Rushworth with a game, she is tempting Tom with his principle vice. In fact, this even proves she knows because she's using it against him.
Second, she constantly talks about how Sir Thomas is in financial peril, Fanny cannot have a horse! But she sees nothing wrong with Tom gambling a significant amount of money for her own ends, which proves a good deal of her frugality is self-serving or pointedly cruel.
Third, much like she offered Henry's carriage to get scratched up on the way to Sotherton, she offers Dr. Grant's money against Tom's but indicates that she will still play for a lower amount. While she wants to tempt Tom to play, she will not spend her own money.
Fourth (speculation), Mrs. Norris hates Dr. Grant and is probably asking Tom to play so that she has a better chance to beat him. We know Sir Thomas doesn't want his wife as a partner in whist.
Mansfield Park is so amazing because this tiny, seemingly insignificant moments reveal so much about each character!

So, there's this famous quote (and source of many memes) from Northanger Abbey, where Henry Tilney says:
“and this is a very nice day, and we are taking a very nice walk, and you are two very nice young ladies. Oh! It is a very nice word indeed! It does for everything. Originally perhaps it was applied only to express neatness, propriety, delicacy, or refinement—people were nice in their dress, in their sentiments, or their choice. But now every commendation on every subject is comprised in that one word.” (chapter 14)
Indeed, Jane doesn't seem to like the word that much, at least in this novel: of the 14 times it is used, 3 happen before this exchange, 10 during it, and then one last time in chapter 29.
It appears
7 times in Pride and Prejudice (used mainly by Lydia, but also by Mrs Bennet, Mrs Gardiner and Lady Catherine);
12 in Sense and Sensibility (by sir John, Marianne, Edward, Mrs Palmer, and Mrs Jennings most of all);
17 in Emma (by Harriet, Mr Woodhouse, Emma, Miss Bates, Mrs Elton, and Mr Weston);
15 in Mansfield Park (by Mrs Grant, Mrs Norris, Mary, Tom, Mr Crawford, Maria, and Edmund);
12 in Persuasion (by Elizabeth, Wentworth, Admiral Croft, Mr Elliot, Mary
But of those, none are used by the narrator in NA; 2 in P&P; 3 in S&S; 5 in Emma; 4 in MP; and 6 in Persuasion (and I'm including all indirect speech). Very nice.
But you know what generic, vague descriptor our beloved Jane loved? fine.
NA: 33 times (18 from dialogue: used my Mrs Thorpe, Mr Allen, Mrs Allen, John Thorpe, Catherine, a miss Thorpe, Isabella, Tilney, and Mrs Morland.)
P&P: 40 times (21 in dialogue: used by Mrs Bennet, Charlotte, Lizzy, Darcy, Caroline, Mrs Gardiner, Mrs Reynolds, and Mr Bennet)
S&S: 29 times (17 in dialogue: used by Willoughby, Marianne, Edward most of all, Mrs Palmer, Anne Steele, and Mrs Jennings)
Emma: 48 times (33 in dialogue: used by Harriet, Mr Woodhouse, Mr Knightley, Emma, Miss Bates, Jane Fairfax, Mr Weston, Frank, Mrs Cole, Mrs Elton)
MP: 67 times (38 in dialogue: used by Mr Rushworth, Lady Bertram, Edmund, Mrs Norris, Fanny, Mrs Grant, Dr Grant, Mr Crawford, William, Mrs Price, Mr Price, and Mary)
Persuasion: 35 times (17 in dialogue: by Mrs Musgrove, Mrs Croft, Charles Musgrove, Sir Walter, Admiral Croft, Captain Wentworth, lady Dalrymple, Harriet Smith).
Not only is fine used much, much more than nice, but nice is most often used by silly or unrefined characters, whereas fine sees more representation of all sorts of characters, and it is used by the narrator specifically, much, much more, not only to describe weather, but to describe people, places, clothes, and so on and so forth.
So, dear Jane, I think we need to talk...

I'm thinking (and chuckling about) Harvey and Graham living together in the 7th year Hufflepuff dorms and wondering how they get along? Does Harvey think Graham is a bit too much? Do they bond over their mutual interest in a certain redheaded Gryffindor?
Hehehehe. 😈
So, this is one of those things that I didn’t intentionally plan at first, but realized after the fact. I have a lot of side characters, and sometimes I don’t notice that I’ve accidentally put them in the same dormitory until I’m organizing my notes and see those two names next to each other and go: “…..huh.”
However, like little accidents often do, this particular accident spawned a whole slew of ideas…and after much musing, the conclusion I reached was that Graham and Harvey fuckin’ hate each other.
Or rather, Graham fuckin’ hates Harvey, and Harvey just kind of smiles at Graham in pleasant bafflement like, “Wow, what an odd fellow. Why are his robes so rumpled. Anyway…”
Graham, I think, would resent the heck out of Harvey for being something of a friendly oaf and getting the head boy badge, while he, Graham, is actively running a student support group and trying to change things in the school. What has Harris ever done???? But Graham feels he’s constantly overlooked and he’s a little bitter about it. (Who can blame him!!)
Meanwhile, he has to listen to Harvey moan about his on-and-off relationship with Sophie Price, which he is probably moaning about while he’s apparently dating some Gryffindor muggle-born girl who — oh — is actually really hot.
And then…AND THEN that Muggle-born girl shows up to the great hall in a miniskirt and inspires a school wide protest for muggle rights?? And then?? And then???? That idiot Harveh fookin’ Harris dumps her? For Sophie Price? The girl who cheated on him?
Yeah, Graham is NOT impressed.
You know who else is apparently in that dorm? Clarence Smith, whose claim to fame was hitting on Lily at Slughorn’s Christmas party and getting told to fuck off by Sirius and then later telling Bertha Jorkins that Lily was shagging Bertram Aubrey. These Hufflepuffs are MESSY.
(Also I love the implication that Graham heard all this drama and was like, “yeah fuck these dudes. That girl needs some support. Better invite her to my secret muggle-born support group.”)
ANYWAY lmao. This is one of my absolute favorite parts of story-crafting: making accidental connections and discovering all this backstory that has been going on right under my nose 😌
tl;dr: Graham is a Harvey Harris Hater.

Kay Francis and William Powell in Jewel Robbery (William Dieterle, 1932)
Cast: William Powell, Kay Francis, Helen Vinson, Hardie Albright, Alan Mowbray, André Luguet, Henry Kolker, Spencer Charters, Lee Kohlmar, Clarence Wilson. Screenplay: Erwin Gelsey, based on a play by Ladislas Fodor and a translation by Bertram Bloch. Cinematography: Robert Kurrle. Art direction: Robert M. Haas. Film editing: Ralph Dawson. Music: Bernhard Kaun.
Jewel Robbery is a perfect storm of what would be taboos under the Production Code: Not only does it condone adultery and let crime go unpunished, but it also allows William Powell's jewel thief -- pardon me, robber -- to slip a cigarette laced with an uncommonly potent strain of cannabis to the jewelry store guard, thereby violating the forthcoming ban on drug references in movies. (We are assured that, after a case of the giggles, the guard will fall sound asleep to wake refreshed with no hangover but the munchies.) The adulteress is Baroness Teri (Kay Francis), a golddigger who has married the aging Baron von Horhenfels (Henry Kolker) for his money, while carrying on a liaison with the much younger cabinet member Paul (Hardie Albright). Unfortunately, as Teri tells her confidante Marianne (Helen Vinson), Paul is a bit of a bore. She makes the best of it, however, swanning around in gowns designed by Orry-Kelly that defy the law of gravity and raking in the jewels her husband provides. Which leads her to the jewelry store that is about to be robbed and to the robber himself, with whom she swiftly falls in love. The rest is a story of crime and absence of punishment that ends well for Teri and her thief -- uh, robber. Francis and Powell were never better, and there's a good deal of charm and wit to the film. It could have been directed with a lighter touch: William Dieterle is better known for the somewhat stuffy biopics The Story of Louis Pasteur (1935), The Life of Emile Zola (1937), and Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet (1940), and he doesn't have the Viennese insouciance that the script needs. But he lets his actors provide that, with good results.

THE THUNDERMANS
JESSIE
BUBBLE GUPPIES
RUGRATS
NI HAO KAI LAN
LALALOOPSY
STUCK IN THE MIDDLE
LIV AND MADDIE

WHY WOULD YOU CURSE ME WITH REMEMBERING THAT LALALOOPSYS EXISTED AND THAT I HAD THREE OF THEM
BUT I AGREE THAT ALL THE OTHER ONES WERE GREAT (Except Liv and Maddie, I never actually watched that one)
But like Thundermans were *chefs kiss* Max and his talking evil bunny (Dr. Colosso?? I think?) were my blorbos and so was Nora. I watched the entire series so many times
JESSIE I WATCHED SO MUCH (Even though I voted for George in the polls) AND I THINK I WATCHED THE WHOLE SERIES AT LEAST 3 TIMES A YEAR (Ravi, Luke, Zuri, and Bertram my beloveds)
RUGRATS WAS SO GOOD AND I LOVE IT SM
Also I completely forgot about Ni Hao Kai Lan till now

Just Dizziness - Chapter 34
Sophie’s POV
Poking at Ben, I wanted to know how she was doing, trying to get him to call Tom.
“Just call, for maybe a minute?”  I was trying not to fidget, and it was a losing battle.
Glancing at his watch, he saw he had a few minutes before he had to leave.  “Ok, but I’m sure he would have said something if things weren’t alright.”
“Hey, mate!  Wanted to check in and see how you two are holding up with everything.”
I listened in, trying to decipher from Ben’s side of the conversation.
“Well that sounds delightful.  Care to elaborate?”
That sounded promising! Right?  Maybe?
“That’s rough, man.  I can’t imagine being in your shoes.  If that happened to Sophie, I’d completely lose my mind.”
My heart thumped, awing at his response.  Honestly?  I’d feel the same way if something happened to my Bennie.  It’s like losing your other half.
“Like Dr. Bertram said.  Start back at the beginning.  Show her how much you love her.  Take her back to some of the places you took her on those first dates, your favorite memories.”
I grabbed a hand towel, trying to take out my building anxiety on it instead of his shirt sleeve.
“There’s no supposing about it.  Now get off your arse and show that woman how much she means to you.  Help her remember, and what she doesn’t remember, create new memories.”
With that, he placed his phone back in his pocket.
“So?  What did he say?”
He glanced at his watch again.  I knew he had a meeting, but my nerves were fraying.
“Unfortunately nothing new.  I’m so sorry, darling.  I know you were hoping for something more.  I’d stay if I could, but my meeting starts soon.”  With a kiss on the cheek, he dashed for the front door.
It was early afternoon, and I found myself walking around London.  I was maybe a little too eager or maybe just hoping lunch with the girls would still happen.  I missed my friend.  We had become closer friends when the accident happened with her newly minted nickname ‘chickie’, and then suddenly I never heard from her again, at least once she was awake (which was a massive relief).  I didn’t want to just push myself back into her life either.
I found myself at the garden she and I used to go to when we wanted to escape from the boys once in a while, needing girl time.  There was just something so calm about being surrounded by all the flora and fauna and meandered towards the usual bench, finding myself surprised.
“Chickie?”
Your POV
I found myself walking around with those words stuck in my head, cringing every time they passed through my head.
I feel like I can’t win.
After our discussion last night, I shouldn’t be surprised.  Without realizing, an hour had passed, and I found myself in the middle of a beautifully kept garden.  According to the sign, it’s called St. John’s Lodge Gardens.  I think this is Regent's Park?  Something about this seemed vaguely familiar.
It’s just so incredibly frustrating
I winced, hearing Tom’s words echo in my head as I sat on a wooden bench, thankful for the peace and quiet.  I thought things were going decently.  I knew I should have told him about my doubts earlier, but he had already been helping me so much, and that wasn’t another burden I wanted to put on him.
Before I knew it, I was on the verge of tears again.  I found a semi-private bench somewhere in the middle of this garden and decided to just have a good cry as there was no one around.
“Chickie?”
I could hear a vaguely familiar voice nearby but decided to ignore it.  Whoever it is, they’re probably here for someone else.
A moment later, I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up to find……Sophie?  I think I remember her from the hospital.  “Oh, um, hi.  Hello.”  I try to wipe away my tears and pretend as if she didn’t just catch me crying, but rather than going with it, she pulls me into a hug.
“It’s ok, chickie.  If Tom said or did something that’s upsetting you, I’ll smack him upside his head myself.”
I couldn’t help but be both confused and amused.  “Heh, thanks.”  I had to know…….  “Hey, uh…..who’s chickie?”
She started withdrawing at the question.  “Sorry.  It’s something I used to call you because of an incident at a petting zoo a few months back.”
Petting zoo?  “Interesting.  I wish I could remember.  Could you maybe tell me about it sometime?  There’s just so many things and people I still just can’t seem to remember, and it’s driving me bonkers.  Tom, too, apparently.”
Sophie’s eyes seemed to soften a bit before she spoke again.  “I have to admit.  I was wondering why I never heard from you when you woke up from your accident.  I texted a couple times but never heard back.”
“I’m so sorry.  Tom let me know my phone was destroyed in the accident and had to set me up with a new one, and for some reason I lost quite a lot of my contacts as well.  I got random texts from people but was too overwhelmed with everything to figure them out and felt bad with what Tom was already helping me with to ask him about them.  I’ve probably lost a number of friends with all this.”
I started crying again, feeling even worse than before.
“No, no.  Don’t cry.  None of this is your fault.  You couldn’t help it.  You are doing the best you can given what’s happened.  I haven’t been the best friend to you through all of this.  Rather than coming over to check in on you or calling Tom myself, I texted a couple times and then poked at Ben to call and check in with Tom about you because I was afraid of overwhelming you with another person instead of giving you the choice.”
“It’s ok.  To be honest, so much has been overwhelming, but I was out earlier this morning for breakfast and came home to overhear Tom on the phone with someone, saying how frustrated he was, and that he felt like he couldn’t win.  I left as quickly and quietly as I could before he figured out I was home and ended up here somehow.”
Sophie listened intently the entire time I spoke.  She even ignored her buzzing phone.  It felt comforting, like we had been friends for some time and I could trust her.  It really made me wonder why I put off getting together with her and Emma for girl time.
“Can’t blame you one bit.  I’d be upset if I heard Ben saying something like that.”
Before she continued, her phone buzzed.  Checking it, there was a message from Ben.  “When was the last time you checked your phone?”
That’s an odd question.  “Um, I shut it off when I left the house a while ago.  I don’t even know what time it is right now.”
She showed me her phone.
Bennie: Please call.  Tom is freaking out.  He can’t get a hold of her.  Need help.
“Would you like me to call Ben and let him know you’re with me?  Or do you want to call Tom?”
I thought for a moment before responding.  “Could you let Ben know?”
“Not a problem.”  With that, she called Ben, letting him know we were together, having a bit of impromptu girl time and told him that Tom needs to chill and think about what he said earlier, likely in conjunction with the conversation he had with Ben earlier as his wife is upset.
“And you’re supposed to be Sherlock here, but I’m the one putting 2 and 2 together.  Think about it for a moment………..and there it is.  Now, please, talk to Tom?  We may be out for a while.”
She put away her phone before talking again.  “I feel like part of this is my fault.  I asked him earlier to call Tom, trying to check in on you….”
I cut her off before she could get any further.  “This is not your fault by any means.  He and I already had an argument last night, and I figured he had his frustrations.  So It would have come out sooner or later.”
“Argument?”
“There’s so much to tell you.”
“I’ve got time if you want to talk about it.”
It felt nice and comforting talking to her.  I couldn’t put a finger on it, but it was like we had done this a hundred times before.  I gave her the same explanation I gave Emma that morning but included what I overheard Tom say on the phone when I reached home earlier.
“To be honest, that's kind of why I ducked out of breakfast with you and Emma.  It’s not that I didn’t want to talk to you.  I was just so incredibly nervous to get together with someone who knew me, but I had no recollection of in return.”  I couldn’t seem to stop talking.
“I can’t blame you, especially hearing how you’ve been feeling and what you’ve been going through.”
“But talking to you now, it feels so comfortable, like we’ve been doing this for ages.  It feels nice.”  She smiled at me in return, some type of relief visible in her eyes.
“I’m so glad.  I’m always here for you whenever you want to talk or just get away.”
Without even realizing it, we had left the bench and started wandering around the garden.  After a few minutes, she spoke again.  “So what do you want to do about Tom?”
Sighing heavily, I paused.  “I just wished he had told me he was feeling frustrated instead of overhearing him telling Ben, but I can’t blame him.  I didn’t exactly tell him my doubts either.”
She placed an arm around my shoulders, allowing me to lean my head on her shoulder.  “It’s completely ok.  You’re both entitled to your frustrations.  As long as you talk about them.  Mind you, how you both found out about them may not have been the best, but it’s better late than not at all.  No relationship is perfect, not even Ben and I.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at that.
“As long as you communicate and want to work on it.  That’s what matters.”
“You’re right.  I know.  I’m just so tired of all these blank spots that I’ve been caught up in how it makes me feel.  I’ve felt bad about him having to take care of me, but I don’t think I stopped to realize the effect this would have on him.”  I couldn’t help but sniffle a bit.
“It’s ok.  This isn’t a situation that tends to happen to everyone, but the bond you two have is incredible.  Plus you’ve got me, Emma, Bobby, and so many others to help and support.”
That helped me feel better.  That and stopping by the bakery to pick up some pudding.  I made sure to get some for Tom as well.
“I’d better head home.  I think I’ve made him worry long enough.”
“It’s alright.  Feel free to call or text anytime you want to chat or get together.”
Sophie’s POV
With that, she walked the last couple blocks back to her place.  Once she was out of sight, I pulled out my phone.
Soph: I have an idea for chickie
Em: I’m all ears

Well, another haunt season has come and gone, which means I can tell you what I've been up to for the past two (ish) months!
For those of you who don't know, every Halloween season I work at my local haunted house as a scare actor. For the past 5 years we've had a plague themed haunt, and while we've had plague doctors in there in the past, we didn't have one for the last couple years. This year I aimed to change that.
Now, I specifically wanted the plague doctor to be a constant presence in the plague ridden city, so I auditioned to be a roaming actor, and I actually got the position!!!
Without further Ado, i'd like to introduce to you all: Dr. Erhard Guntram!
Tumblr media
(and before you ask, yes this costume is mostly just my Dr. Bertram outfit but with a different mask. I also did make a new cane, but that ended up breaking like the second week in 😭)
To make the character's story more interesting (and to explain why he was so desperately searching for a cure) I decided that Dr. Guntram would have an extremely bad case of the plague. Which means the extremely talented makeup artists got to have fun absolutely ruining my face! Here's some of my favorite makeups this season!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now part of my role this year was to check on the actors in my specific area, however I was not the main person doing that.
The main lead was my good friend @phantomgleek, and naturally we had to get some goofy behind the scenes photos. My favorite of which is on our last night, when we did twin makeups (which we call twin night)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On one of the nights I wasn't roaming, phantomgleek ended up stealing my hat, and went to every actor in our section and poked fun at Dr. Guntram. So naturally I had to buy a red wig and did the same to her character Adelaide! (Which of course led to our goofiest twin day photo yet.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(unfortunately I am now out of room for photos on this post 😭)
This was, without a doubt, the best season I've had at the haunt. Getting to make a new, unique character and to roam about, chasing people through the rooms was one of the most entertaining experiences. I've been a paid scare actor for 6 years now, and I volunteered for 6 years before that. I hate that this year is over, but I already can't wait for next year!!!

Elizabeth Elliot: Marry Mr. Elliot and reestablish myself as the mistress of Kellynch
Lady Russell: encourage Anne to marry Mr. Elliot, read all new poetry publications
Mr. Elliot: Keep Sir Walter from marrying that vile seductress so I stay in the line of succession
Mrs. Clay: Marry Sir Walter, at all costs

The last Commentary request(unless you want more, I'll gladly provide more!), and I'm sad that I can't simply send you ALL of So happy a summer but this scene... it breaks my heart a little in so many ways and I don't even know:
It was plain that Edmund wished to assure her of his honourable intentions, but it was equally plain that he did not yet consider himself at liberty to make her an offer.
“I hope,” he began, a little awkwardly, “that we shall have the pleasure of seeing you at Mansfield parsonage again. Have you plans to make another visit to this part of the country?”
Elizabeth assured him that she should be glad to do so, should an invitation from the Grants be forthcoming – “But as yet, no fixed plans have been made.”
“And if I were to pass through Hertfordshire this coming winter,” continued Edmund, with a speaking look at her, “would I be welcome to call on you?”
“Certainly – I am sure my family would be glad to make your acquaintance.”
“And I theirs,” replied Edmund earnestly. “You have spoken so often of your sisters that I feel as if I begin to know them already. I hope – I hope very much – that I may soon meet them in person.” He hesitated a little, then went on: “I do not know whether I will be able to travel before my father’s return. When he is back, however, and I have been ordained, I shall remove from Mansfield to Thornton Lacey. Once I am settled in my own home, I expect to be at liberty to arrange my time and travels more freely.” He glanced at her, his colour high. “If you are still at home – if it should please you, then, to continue our acquaintance…”
Elizabeth, comprehending all that was implied, managed to reply in a tolerably steady voice: “I should be pleased to renew our friendship when circumstances allow.”
“I am glad.” Edmund said no more, but a warm press of her hand expressed more than words could.
They walked for a half-hour more, Edmund eagerly expounding on the plans for his ordination and all the little improvements he hoped to make to the parsonage at Thornton Lacey. Elizabeth listened, commented and asked questions, though her mind was so busily occupied with the implications of their previous conversation that she feared she sometimes replied almost at random. Fortunately, Edmund, being scarcely in a better state, was in little danger of being offended.
“You will write to my sisters, I hope?” was his parting request at the gate. “I should very much wish to have news of you during the winter – and my sisters, too, of course,” he added, looking a little conscious.
This, Elizabeth could easily promise, having already made the same assurance to the Miss Bertrams that morning. “And I also expect to have frequent news of everybody at Mansfield from Mrs Grant,” she added.
“I shall no doubt often have cause to call on Dr Grant as I prepare for my ordination,” replied Edmund, with a hint of a smile.
Little more was said. Edmund pressed her hand once more; then, with a long, grave parting look, he took his leave.
(Again, thank you for indulging me so much and should you be fed up with this, feel free to ignore this ask)
Thank you for indulging me with so many asks! This has been a fun game, and I have quite enjoyed the chance to ramble to my heart’s content. :D
This was a fairly challenging section to write. So far in the story, we’ve seen Elizabeth comment on her initial impression of Edmund, we’ve seen Fanny’s view of how their relationship develops – but we haven’t actually seen any direct Edmund/Elizabeth interactions from the perspective of the principals themselves. I felt that some on-screen action was needed in order to make the relationship feel believable. But since I also knew that I wanted to leave the fic open-ended, the characters had to sort of dance around the main subject of their conversation, forming an unspoken understanding while not, strictly speaking, committing to anything.
I also wanted to show Edmund in a kinder light than he’d been seen in the story up to this point. After all, he is fundamentally a kind-hearted, well-meaning, honourable man despite his flaws. He’s trying his best, it’s just that his best isn’t always that great.
I think Edmund would be very conscious of his awkward position here. He’s balancing different obligations: what he considers his duty to his family (particularly his father) and what he considers himself to owe Elizabeth. He wants to make his continued interest clear and to gauge her interest, but he can’t just ask straight out. Considering his honest nature, I think this sort of balancing act would be very difficult for him. He’d like to just speak his heart!
Elizabeth is also being careful not to say too much, though for different reasons. Edmund probably interprets it as maidenly modesty and reserve, but she’s actually just undecided. She doesn’t want to discourage him, but she also doesn’t want to give too much encouragement. She’s keeping her options open. Fortunately, a lady would have been expected to err on the side of caution, so Elizabeth probably isn’t coming across as cold, just well-behaved.
I wanted Edmund’s feelings to shine through here. He’s very nervous because there’s a lot at stake, and I wanted it to come across as kind of sweet. I also wanted to give readers a glimpse into his plans. He’s not just stringing Elizabeth along – he’s got a plan and a timeline for when he’ll be able to support a wife. But considering that they’ve only known each other for a couple of months, the prospect of being apart for an indeterminate amount of time (it’s not yet certain when Sir Thomas will actually make it back) is understandably daunting. Edmund is essentially asking Elizabeth to wait and potentially turn away other suitors who might come along. It’s not a small ask!
Elizabeth, comprehending all that was implied, managed to reply in a tolerably steady voice: “I should be pleased to renew our friendship when circumstances allow.”
“I am glad.” Edmund said no more, but a warm press of her hand expressed more than words could.
I think Edmund would be far too prim and proper to ask for a kiss under such circumstances, but I wanted there to be some physical show of affection. After all, it’s a pretty momentous conversation for both of them.
I’m pretty happy with this little summary of their conversation. We see some examples in Austen’s works of characters being so distracted by strong feelings that they hardly know what they’re doing – Darcy’s repeated inquiries about Elizabeth’s family come to mind. Here, both characters are relieved about coming to an unspoken agreement and somewhat caught up in the romance of the moment. It would be too much to expect them to be coherent under such circumstances.
They can’t write directly to each other, but there are ways around that. Charlotte, at least, would no doubt be doing her best to forward the match, and I don’t think the Miss Bertrams would mind playing messenger either. Here is also a hint of Edmund’s sense of humour – I do think he has one, though he rarely shows it, and it would certainly help endear him to Elizabeth.
Little more was said. Edmund pressed her hand once more; then, with a long, grave parting look, he took his leave.
And this last line is, of course, a reference to Darcy taking his leave of Elizabeth in Lambton. The circumstances are different – in Lambton, Elizabeth thinks Darcy is walking out of her life, while in this fic, Edmund has made it clear that he wants to keep pursuing her. Still, Elizabeth and Edmund don’t know when they’ll meet again, and it’s uncertain how Sir Thomas will react to Edmund’s marriage plans. I think Edmund would want to fix Elizabeth’s fine eyes in his memory to tide him over the long separation ahead.
I honestly have no idea how the story would continue from the end of this fic – I can see plausible plotlines with either an Elizabeth/Edmund or an Elizabeth/Darcy resolution. I do think that it might have been better for Edmund’s chances to propose at this point. As Elizabeth reflects after this scene, she probably would have accepted him if push came to shove. She’s not wildly in love, but she does like him and he really is a very good marriage prospect in many ways. But, like in canon (though for different reasons), Edmund lets his lady slip away and gives her time to have second thoughts. Still, Mr Collins would make Edmund shine in comparison, so maybe absence would make Elizabeth’s heart grow fonder…
Aaaand I’ll stop here before I end up with an infestation of plot bunnies. :D
