Now for the third member of Raisa's team: Pyrrha the Varusaburosu - featuring a soft redesign of the species to better fit into mainline + Stories settings.
A little about Pyrrha + some notes on the redesign:
Her egg was stolen from its home in a faraway volcanic region, then sold in a black market deal gone wrong, alongside several other foreign animals and eggs.
Raisa’s wife is actually the one who happened upon the eggs while searching for stolen artifacts from a dig she had been a part of. She brought the eggs to the Scriveners, but the organization was unable to track down the details of their origin, and thus the eggs were turned over to the riders of Tazeem, including Raisa.
When the young Pyrrha hatched, Raisa was unsure of what to make of her. She was quick to anger, full of energy, and food aggressive. Pyrrha has since leveled out a little, becoming a stalwart companion and a terrifying powerhouse in Raisa’s team.
I designed her with the rest of the 'blos line in mind: her horns and spines have been rounded off and made blunter to better fit a burrowing monster, and some of her more extravagant plating has been simplified.
I did end up keeping the bright palette and general silhouette, because I adore Frontier's Varusaburosu and want her to be recognizable as one, but now - I think - she fits in a little more with her relatives.

Day 8: Diablos
Big, mean, and super territorial. One of my absolute favorite monsters, I’m always happy to fight, wear it or ride. From is giant horns to its mace shaped tail, to its wild sounding roar I adore this monster.
Here is a subadult male being fresh by wandering into a female’s territory. Too bad for the young male she is in heat and in a especially dangerous mood. Hopefully he will live long enough to learn something from the encounter.

(late) Rathalaugust Day 8: Diablos.
The Bone-dry Bulldozer of the Badlands. Caught unaware, this IG hunter just got JAWS'd. They didn't know.
Tried to do a stricter digital watercolour this time, unlike where I normally use watercolour brushes for rendering as if any other.

Thinkin' about Dragons, Wyrms, and Wyverns as they are in Cantankerous.
Dragons are mythical beings; the only two we know of are Tathemet, the literal Sum of All Evil, and Trag'Oul, the Sum of Humanity's Souls (among other things).
Tumblr media
They are epic things, and so different from one another that to call them the same thing seems false, at the very least. There's no better word for them though.
Because dragons as a concept are very cool though, I thought Diablo deserved More Dragons. But like. Less mythical-aetherael, more terrifying-beast-that-you-could-slap-a-saddle-on-if-you're-batshit-enough. So, Wyrms.
Sanctuary, and everything in it, was made by angels and demons. Inarius himself had a big part in sculpting the planet, but everything else was made by his host and Lilith's followers. (No one talks about her followers enough smh.)
For the purposes of Cantankerous, Inarius did not make much else. He worked on the oceans, he created Arreat, he had a hand in the forests that became the planet's lungs. But when it came to life on Sanctuary, he left that to everyone else.
Except for Wyrms.
They started small, like little scaley winged snakes, but quickly grew larger and larger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Large enough to ride even, by certain dour nephalem.
Tumblr media
Why he made wyrms is very fanficy (maybe I'll get to it one day), but suffice to say he wanted these things to be powerful, and he wanted them to be his in a way not much else on Sanctuary was. He wanted big living WMDs bound to him by 'blood', such than an angel has it.
All it took was a little light-blood, a bit of willpower, and the worldstone, and Sanctuary had its own dragons. Wyverns were not intentionally made by Inarius, but rather a result of the tuning of the worldstone. Turned out in addition to dampening the nephalem it dampened the planet on the whole, and this included the offspring of his Wyrms.
So Inarius made Wyrms. Initially he made three, one of his own, one for Linarian, one for Lilith. Maybe he made more after that, or maybe he left the lizards to their own devices.
All this to say that this thing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this thing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Might could be considered half-siblings bcuz of this thing.
Tumblr media
Inarius made them both by way of donating his own essence (not like that, step away from the gutter). If that makes him Rathma's father, stands to reason he's the father of anything else made that way. The wyrms just have the worldstone for a mom, where Rat has a Lilith.

Ranking rpgs based on their combat
(this is only ones that i play and i know the older games are hard to compare to the newer games but i just think it’s nice to see the progression)
10: Mass Effect 1-I genuinely love playing this game but the combat really feels clunky and I HATE the overheating mechanic. I understand for lore reasons why it exists but they ditched the idea in the other games so honestly i’m not a fan. Overall it’s fun but the combat feels very annoying to me but i’ll give it grace for being basically as old as me.
9: Diablo 3-So it’s the only diablo game that iv played but honestly i just think the mechanics feel too repetitive. Like genuinely my biggest complaint with it is that i just get too bored with it even with all the powers you eventually can get. It all kinda feels like your doing the same thing over and over again (unless you find some really good combos).
8: Mass Effect 2-it feels a lot better than ME1 and using biotics is a million times better. However the leveling system kinda sucks and i think they should have just stuck with the system they used in ME1. But the fighting feels a lot better, not great but better.
7: Dragon Age Origins-it physically pains me to put it so low but this game is also old. I like the tactics system a lot and the abilities are so fun but basic combat is just very weird and can be super buggy, especially when bigger enemies can still hit you when you move out of the way so it feels like there’s no point at using certain tactics and you just gotta hit it with as much power as you can.
6: Greedfall-I genuinely love the combat in this game but it gets very boring after awhile. You have very limited abilities and honestly bigger fights just get frustrating because it feels like your just waiting for when you can use your abilities again. But it feels very smooth (for the most part).
5: Mass Effect 3-I love that they added being able to jump over certain things and roll away, it makes me feel more engaged in the fights. The biotics in this game are amazing but again, i hate the leveling system. Can they please just bring back the ME1 level system i’m begging them.
4: Dragon Age 2- So i am in fact the da2 combat target audience. I love how fun and flashy it is, i love having big aoes to use on hordes on enemies, i love being able to swing my weapons around and knock over people like bowling pins, it’s so fucking fun. Obviously it’s not like, the best but i genuinely adore it.
3: Mass Effect Andromeda-Unpopular opinion maybe, but i think combat in this game is fantastic. The jumping while fighting is so fucking fun, the biotics are so cool to use and i actually love the leveling system. The weapons are actually really good and overall i really love fighting in this game. If MEA has no fans i’m fucking dead what can i say.
2: Dragon Age Inqusition-I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I love jumping i love all the different abilities different classes get, i’m obsessed with the weapons and armor crafting. It has some of the flashy-ness that i love from DA2 but still has really good combat abilities and tactics.
1: Baldurs Gate 3-It is hard to compare this game to the others because it’s much more recent and it uses a different system than the others, but i think it provides a great example of what an amazing rpg should do. The different classes are so unique and the combat is genuinely so fun and actually makes me think.
