Picrew versions of Brontes and Bestia and personal faceclaims for them (Francoise Yip and Jeanne Crain, respectively), since their faces aren’t ever shown in canon, so they can look like whatever I want them to

Y'all know the Dread Masters, right?
Tumblr media
Well, I've been playing Tyr 2 through Oricon, and now I have these insane gooberheads on my mind. And let's be real here, THESE guys should've had the first expansion. Sure, Rise of the Hutt Cartel is decent on its own, but c'mon! The Dread Masters were built up through the operations as primary antagonists and all they get is a side update with one planet and two operations?! Man, BioWare, I liked these guys, dammit! Okay, that aside... If anyone else has anything they'd like to share about the Dread Masters (feelings, headcannons, ect).

Can I please just
I know I don’t Shut Up about the Dread Masters
I know they’re standing at a funny angle
But Brontes doesn’t even come up to Tyrans’s shoulder why is she so leeeeeeetle I’m gonna cry
Edited to add:
Tumblr media
Like, I know it’s just a perspective thing, and that if Tyrans and Bestia are standing on the same line behind Raptus, and Brontes and Calphy are standing on the same line behind them, then the height differences are not as drastic as they seem (also they’re standing in a different order on Oricon and their height differences don’t seem as drastic), but still
but also considering the fact that Styrak is standing in the back row and he’s still the tallest, how fuckign tall is Styrak

[SEAT OF THE EMPIRE: ORICON]
Oricon was a moon in the Outer Rim Territories just outside the Seat of The Empire. An insignificant world, it was once home to Darth Vitus before its location was lost to the wider galaxy. The moon had a rocky, volcanic surface, and it was left permanently tainted by dark side power due to Sith rituals and alchemy.
During the era of the reconstituted Sith Empire, the Sith Emperor tasked six Sith Lords—Bestia, Tyrans, Brontes, Styrak, Calphayus, and Raptus—with studying the powerful Phobis devices, and sent them to Oricon to do so. When they emerged from their research as the mysterious and powerful Dread Masters, they declared their intention to make Oricon their home, and with the Emperor's blessing, they used thousands of slaves to construct the Dread Fortress as their citadel.
During the Galactic War, the Dread Masters' rebellion against the Empire was brought to end in the Dread War on Oricon, where the remaining Dread Masters were slain within their fortress, with the exception of Calphayus.

The V'ehsz Legacy vs. Oricon
I've been thinking of the Oricon/Dread Master arc lately
and it got me thinking about how my legacy faces it
I knew from the get-go that my Republic toons are the ones who actually face the Dread Masters, themselves, but it also got me wondering about how each individual member of my Main Eight dealt with that arc
Leo, my Knight, is actually the one to take the reigns for it, with Synnda (Consular) and Varrich (Trooper) close at her side.
She takes the lead, charging into battle but also knowing when to hold her blows. She helps Republic and Empire alike, trying to keep as few people from becoming corrupted by the Masters' influence as possible. It hits too close to home for her, remembering her own time under Vitiate's control, and she fights more fiercely than ever to bring down the Dread Masters. She strikes down both Brontes and Bestia.
Synnda is the driving force for her strike team avoiding corruption, holding it back and taking the brunt of it himself. It probably contributes to the dark side corruption marring his face. He's the voice of reason among the trio, coaxing them to stay their hand when he knows words will have a better affect. But, he's also the one both Tyrans, and Raptus, fall at the blade of - showing them, far too late, the power behind his soft voice.
Varrich is the aggressive one, rushing in with blaster readied as his squad watches the team's rear in its assault on the palace. He nearly kills Calphayus when the man comes to the Republic, defeated, but the other two manage to make him stay his hand. It's him and Havoc Squad that keeps Bestia's beasts, and other Dread forces, from tearing the rest of the team apart.
Jen (Smuggler) is nowhere in sight for the arc, not wanting to endanger his crew and leaving it to the soldiers and Jedi he knows will handle it better than him.
Azan (Warrior) and Qizulth (Inquisitor) work closely on Oricon for a bit. Azan, along with her girlfriend Max, protecting Imperial forces through brute strength, and Qizulth tapping into his powerful Force abilities to help hold off the corruption. Qizulth stays close to the Imperial base camp, while Azan ends up tailing Leo's strike team until losing it to the chaos within the fortess that forces her to fall back where the Empire has more numbers.
Terrin (Hunter) shows up on the planet later than everyone else after hearing about something going on, and wanting a piece of the action. She ends up teaming with Azan and Max, and the they storm the fortress, only to find Brontes' (relatively fresh) body. By the time they're only about halfway to the palace's throne room, the Dread forces are falling back, Leo's team victorious.
And, then there's Agent Xaerez, former Cipher Nine. He has eidetic memory.
...and yet Oricon is a blank time period in his mind. He doesn't remember what happened, and his companions claim he disappeared during that time.
There are no records of his involvement.

I wish I could include the Dread Masters into this verse but the thing is, Bestia snd Brontes were the only ones that I liked. xD
but in all seriousness, I wish there was a Dread Masters story arc for casual/solo players without doing raids. that's my biggest gripes about the stste of swtor that every new story arc content always have a raid.

The Foundation of Fear
(I’ve been thinking about writing about the Dread Masters for a while now, so thanks to @animperialmarch for creating a perfect opportunity. AO3)
The shadows in the Dark Temple seemed alive, creeping around her, clinging to her skin, their indistinct whispering sending chills down her spine. She could feel a soft hum of the stone floor under her feet, the unmistakable sign that at least one of the Phobis devices was active. Well, that, and a slippery sensation somewhere just beyond her grasp, clawing relentlessly at her mental barriers, urging to cover, to flee, to disappear among the shadows. She smiled, her steps not faltering even for a moment. Bestia knew fear and thrived on its power: it followed her everywhere she went, and it was her who commanded it, not other way around.
Ignoring a sudden blood-curdling scream, reverberating in the corridors, Bestia entered the Phobis chamber, steeling her mind against the direct onslaught of pure, crippling terror.
Some poor acolyte’s body laid on the floor, still twitching, her dead eyes open wide, a small trickle of blood in the corner of pale lips vivid red against the woman’s ashen skin.
“I think she bit her tongue off.” Brontes didn’t bother looking up from the research station, reaching up for a datapad held up by some sort of metal claw attached to the stone floor. There was more of them, all around the chamber, hanging off the walls and ceiling, waiting motionlessly for their mistress’ commands. “I wonder if...” she started, but then just shook her head, turning to the Phobis device. It was surrounded by four claws, which unfolded gracefully, and then joined together activating a forcefield, creating a dome crackling with white energy. Brontes didn’t move, engrossed in the readings flashing on the datapad.
Bestia felt her fists clenching in anger. Oh, how she longed to lash out, make the other Lord crawl at her feet, teach her some respect. She never took lightly to being ignored, but, unfortunately, she was also painfully aware that Brontes was essential to... their new cause. There was no one else quite like her, but the same could be said about the rest of them, and wasn’t it infuriating? For the Sith, a rivalry resulting in bloodbath was like breathing, so this new... cooperation felt unnatural.
“Magnificent, isn’t it?” Brontes’ silky voice cut into her musings. She still wasn’t looking at Bestia, her gaze focused on the device, sitting dark, cold and silent inside the forcefield, yet still pulsating lazily, relentlessly pushing on its boundaries. “And yet I can’t not hate it a little, because I know I won’t be able to master and harness its power properly just by myself. Sooner or later it will claim me, take my mind and turn it against me. It’s so beautiful. However... to suddenly find myself forced into becoming merely a part of something greater is... unnerving, to say the least.”
“Yes, it is.” Bestia shrugged, and came to stand at the other Lord’s side. “But the Emperor brought us here together. We should trust his will.”
“Oh, I know, I know.” Brontes waved her hand impatiently. “Raptus told me all about it. I swear, this man could talk for hours. I’m certain Tyrans agreed to join us just to quiet him.”
“Tyrans is more than that.”
“Yes. We all are.”
To say that Bestia never hesitated would be an overstatement, but she was used to acting swiftly and with force. Brontes was meticulous, always analysing and calculating, her mind was able to make leaps and connections none of them could ever dream of. If she wasn’t sure about the devices... well, if that was the case it was too late, anyway. The choice was made, by them or for them, it was never entirely clear when one acted under the Emperor’s direct orders, and all that was left now was carrying it through.
“If you’re having doubts, this is no time or place for them. Not anymore.” Bestia said coldly.
“Only Jedi do not doubt, and that’s because they don’t think.” Brontes answered mockingly. “But don’t worry, I don’t plan on backing down. This, “she pointed at the Phobis device,” surpasses everything I’ve ever dreamed of. Calphayus looks at them and sees our future victories, sees greatness, and you don’t have to be a prophet like him to understand that they hold the potential for so much more. I want to know it, I want to have it all, but...”
“You will.” Bestia interrupted her imperiously. “We will. This is just a beginning.”
“Yes...” Brontes looked ahead, her eyes empty. “But what will be the end?”
Bestia sighed. There was no point in arguing any further.
“Come” she commanded.” Give Styrak your notes, make him do some work, you’ve been here for too long. It’s starting to affect you.”
Brontes hummed and cocked her head, still looking thoughtful.
“Perhaps. Well, at least if we all go mad, the entire galaxy will follow.”
Bestia smiled at that, there was a dangerous glint in her eyes.
“Of course. The galaxy will fall before us. One way or another.”

Besides Brontes, is there any Dread Master that you love to develop more on?
:heart eyes:
I have Ideas for all of them, but Brontes is definitely the one that I've latched onto the strongest. Bestia probably comes in next, and then Calphy, then maybe Raptus and Styrak, with Tyrans probably coming in last. A lot of my ideas about them are just in a very disjointed jumble in a very messy google doc, but I've tried to organize some thoughts about each of their origins, their relations to each other and to the Emperor, their different passion projects and strengths. Some of it is based in the lore and their in-game lines, and some of it is just "nah I said what I said, deal with it." Every now and then I read someone else's headcanons about one of them and think "well that's cool, my headcanons are stupid," and I have to remind myself that it's not a contest, and we can all have different ideas that are just as valid and neat (and they can even be similar and still valid, I don't have to throw out some of my ideas just because someone else thought of something that's kind of like what I thought but my jerk brain is Yelling that theirs is better).

SWTOR: Women Characters and Betrayal
Something I realized today: With only three exceptions I can identify (Satele Shan, Crysta Markon and Shae Vizla), every single really strong woman with agency in the game that has a pivotal role in the PC's story is depicted as a betrayer or someone who has lied to those who gave them responsibility about major issues. It's as though they had not figured out how to write women without making them either exhibit some treachery, inspire some level of distrust, or have little agency.
SPOILERS FOR EVERY CLASS STORY, SHADOW OF REVAN, KOTFE, KOTET, THE TRAITOR ARC AND OSSUS
Kira Carsen (Jedi Knight): Child of the Emperor. Obviously not her fault and she consciously throws off the Emperor's influence, but they do set her up as "oooh, she's got an evil side!"
Master Yuon (Jedi Consular): Part of the group that abandoned Parkanas Tark on Malachor III. Dread Master Brontes: Turns on the Empire to the point where the Empire sends people to hunt her down and stop her damage. Dread Master Bestia: Turns on the Empire to the point where the Empire sends people to hunt her down and stop her damage. Risha Drayen (smuggler): Some of the NPCs you meet don't ever want to see Risha again because she screwed them over so badly. She does show her loyalty to the smuggler in the confrontation with Nok Drayen, and from then on, but she's still left people like Beryl Thorne in her wake. Raina Temple (Imperial Agent): Raina hasn't lied to the PC, but she's lied to the Sith about being Force sensitive. Kaliyo Djannis (Imperial Agent): Her entire companion storyline is about all the people she's betrayed or reneged on agreements with. She almost does that to the PC, too. They continue this theme in KOTFE by showing her betraying the Overwatch chief, lying to the PC about her true intentions (bombing the city) and getting emails from disgruntled people she's burned. Senya: Does a literal 180 and goes from supporting the Alliance to rescuing the person they're trying to kill and depose. Also lures the PC into an ambushed "trial" with the Scions which damages HK-55. Lana Beniko: Famously, arranges for Theron to be captured by the Revanites during Shadow of Revan. Chancellor Saresh: If you're Imperial, Saresh has reason to kill you already. But if you're a Republic PC in KOTET, Saresh may have worked well along side you - and she tries to kill you and take over the Alliance anyway. Empress Acina: Goes from "the new Sith Empire isn't treacherous, I have no reason to try to betray you" to searching for superweapons on Iokath. Darth Zash (Sith Inquisitor): Literally tries to steal the PC's body. General Garza (Trooper): Havoc Squad 1.0 defected because she left them behind. And the way she treats the hapless victims of Eclipse Squad could be considered betrayal too. DS Jaesa (Sith Warrior): After telling the Sith Warrior "I'll never try to kill you and will always support you," her return involves her slaughtering the PC's troops on Iokath, trying to kill Lana Beniko (who may be the PC's wife or SO at that point) and trying to inflict as much pain as possible on the PC. LS Jaesa (Sith Warrior): Is allowed to stay in Gnost-Dural's sanctuary on Ossus because she sold out the Sith Warrior by telling Gnost-Dural all their secrets. Elara Dorne (trooper): Technically not a betrayal, but if the trooper goes Imperial on Iokath, Dorne says that she wishes they were dead and actively helps Jace Malcom try to kill them. SCORPIO: I don't really need to explain this one, do I? Ashara Zavros (Sith Inquisitor): Calls the Jedi to ambush the PC when they go to meet Zavros's ghost.
Like...do they even know how to write women without having them be depicted in some way as untrustworthy?

She thinks she sacrifices her life.
Oh, Calumnia doesn’t die, not when she walks into the Dread Fortress alone, and not when she walks out possessed. But she thinks she has sacrificed herself in turning her body into a prison for the Dread Masters.
Eventually she learns to manage the power, and eventually she learns how to shut them up. Her soul is connected to theirs, and oblivion is no longer theirs to consume and be consumed by. Bestia has a lovely recipe for tea, and it’s strange to remember that long before they were nightmares, they had been people.
She watches her sister claim the Throne and name herself Empress, and she watches the new Empress start a civil war when she signs a peace treaty with the Republic.
The Empire splits into shards of anger and betrayal and hope for the future but things settle after several years of violence. That a Republic embassy opens in Dromund Kaas lets Calumnia dream of a world where she canopenly admire the woman she loves.
But when her love opens the embassy, she remarks that Calumnia hasn’t changed a day since Oricon. Aliya has wrinkles in the corners of her eyes and she carries herself gingerly. Calumnia pauses, realizes her younger sisters look older, and she thinks about souls and emperors and the price of power.
What has been done cannot be undone.
Calumnia watches her father, her sisters, her ciphers and her love age and die. She remains 34 years old even as the Empire crumbled under sabotage and terrorist acts by a resentful traditionalist sect. She remains 34 even when the Republic finishes the traditionalist’s job for them.
She shortens Calumnia into Cal and buys a starship most others would write off as junk. Renting a hanger in the depths of Nar Shaddaa, Cal ignores the turning of the galaxy as she fixes her ship.
Cal watches the Republic suffer the same sabotage her Empire once did. She watches from Kaas City, because when Bane killed all the other Sith to begin his own sect, he left the rainy jungle world abandoned. It suits her fine. There’s plenty of ghosts in the Dark Temple, and she no longer bothers to grow close with the living.
She watches the Republic die, consumed from the inside out, and distantly, she knows her would-have-been-wife would never have recovered from watching the slow death of the once proud Republic. But dread and ghosts are her only companions now, and she is half ghost herself. Never dead, but never quite alive.
She realizes she sacrificed her death.
