langstone orthostat. at 2.76m high it is the largest stone in a single stone row measuring 118m long, consisting of some 27 mainly small-sized stones and orientated north to south. this substantial orthostat is at the lower southern end of the row and leads to a now mutilated cairn to the north. this large standing stone was re-erected in 1893 in its original socket hole. it is reminiscent of the bone stone at the end of one of the stone rows at drizzlecombe with its strikingly similar hammerhead profile. it lies in the danger zone below white tor and was mutilated by american troops during ww2 when it was used for target practice. . . #orthostate #longstone, #standingstone, #menhir, #stonerow, #cairn, #ancientarchitecture, #ancienthistory, #prehistory, #dartmoor, #dartmoorlife, #ancientrituals, #artandarchaeology, #ancientceremony. https://instagr.am/p/CPTeU8ZLjkN/

Welcome to the beautiful Drizzlecombe on Dartmoor. A site in the middle of nowhere that has Bronze Age stone rows, cairns and menhirs. One of the menhirs (large standing stone) is 4 meters high which is the biggest on the moor and the cist (stone burial tomb) is neolithic so this area has been used as a meeting place/place of worship for thousands of years. Nowadays it's only inhabitants are sheep and the wild ponies that graze there and the occasional walker like me.
