Make some noise for Fossil Friday! Corythosaurus was a duck-billed dinosaur that lived in what is now North America. Its name is a nod to the helmets worn by Corinthians in ancient Greece: This species’ strange skull is capped by a crescent-shaped helmet that contains extended tubes, which form elaborate nasal passages. See it up close in the Museum’s Hall of Ornithischian Dinosaurs.

Common Dinosaur Mistakes
you know the "bunny hands" pose everyone does to indicate t. rex? with the hands folded down, palms facing the chest? yeah. almost no dinosaurs could do that. it would break their wrists. only one unique group evolved to do that, which doesn't include any of the Jurassic Park dinosaurs. the term for this is "pronation" and actually the vast majority of land vertebrates can't do it. mammals can. mammals are weird.
not a single dinosaur has claws on their fourth or fifth fingers. not a single one. not even if they're quadrupedal.
most dinosaurs have very stiff tails and can't wiggle them around like a lizard tail. the tails were stiff for balance.
the "tongue flick" thing that lizards do is a lizard thing. dinosaurs wouldn't have done that. they don't do that today (birds, birds don't do that)
"nonavian" dinosaurs with feathered wings had them like birds. they covered the hands. and attached to the hands. stop giving Velociraptor hands. it had wings. and very big ones, too, based on Zhenyuanlong.
dinosaurs with scales don't have lizard scales. lizard scales are a derived trait found only in lizards. they had scutes similar to those of living birds, but much smaller compared to body size, and often in crazy shapes and patterns. dinosaur scales are super weird tbh
sauropods don't have elephant feet. they handled the problem of size in a much weirder way: instead of spreading out the weight, they turned their feet into columns. like pillars. some of the biggest species didn't have any fingers, their front limbs just. end. for maximum column support.
dinosaurs were chonky. you could not see the bones like a silhouette under the skin. some might have been skinnier and some of the features of the bones would be somewhat like with skinny bird legs, but most of the time? no. so stop making the holes in their skulls visible on the outside like damn. jurassic park/world is the biggest offender for this one.
the whole unique feature of dinosaurs is having their legs DIRECTLY under their bodies. they do not sprawl. I can't believe I have to say that, but I do.
hadrosaur (duck-billed dinosaur) front feet were hooves. like, seriously, hooves. not little flippers. not three fingered hands. hooves.
I reserve the right to add more to this post as I think of things.
other people can too, but just research before you do.

[ Argentinosaurus, a giant sauropod, illustrated by Chase Stone. ]
"Of all the animals ever to have roamed the planet, the iconic long-necked, long-tailed dinosaurs known as sauropods stand unrivaled. No other terrestrial creatures have come close to attaining their colossal sizes. They overshadowed all other dinosaurs, from the duck-billed hadrosaurs and the horned ceratopsians to the armored ankylosaurs and predatory tyrannosaurs. Even the mightiest land mammals—mammoths and rhinoceroslike beasts that were up to twice as heavy as the largest elephants alive today—were featherweights compared with the biggest sauropods. From an evolutionary perspective, this singularity makes sauropods an intriguing anomaly. Evolution is rampant with examples of convergence, in which the same feature evolves more than once independently in different groups of organisms. A classic example of convergence is powered flight—flapping wings evolved in birds, bats, pterosaurs and insects, but the particular bones or other structures making up the wings differ among the groups, attesting to their independent evolutionary origins. Convergence in evolution is very common even when it comes to complicated features: warm-bloodedness, eyes that can move and focus, bipedal locomotion, the loss of limbs, the use of tools, and live birth all evolved multiple times in different animal groups. Convergence is widespread in the plant kingdom as well: carnivorous plants evolved at least a dozen times, roots evolved more than once, and even arborescence—plants taking the form of trees—evolved more than once. With convergence so common in nature, sauropods' uniqueness in size is special in itself. No other land animal has approached even a third of the largest sauropods' weight. What makes sauropods stand out from the crowd, both literally and figuratively?"

Can I request Hobie Brown to react to his shy gn crush accidentally sitting on his lap for your fluffy Friday?
Adorable! Thank you for requesting! ❤️

It's Fluffy Friday! (For real this time lol)
ʕ·ᴥ·ʔ
You're talking excitedly with Gwen, food tray in your hands, the Miguel burger sways slightly as you bounce on your feet. The can of soda clinks against the plastic tray.
"Oh! You should absolutely not skip season four even if it's dog shit." Walking backwards to face Gwen, she listens intently to your rambling. "How else are you gonna get the references they throw at you in later seasons?" You say with a cheery smile.
"Are you sure? You literally said it was shit" Gwen raises a brow questioningly.
"Duh! So you can compare how shitty it is to season 5" you turn harshly around, not looking where you're going.
"Shit! Watch out!—" Gwen tries to stop you, but it's too late. You hit a bystander waiting for their meal. You're one of the rare spider people who wasn't gifted with enhanced senses. Cursing at your crappy luck.
Your tray hits the poor guy who was unfortunate enough to be in your way. Pasta lands harshly on their red suit, coating it in bright yellow. The bun from the burger sticks to the spandex, replacing the spider logo to Miguel's mask design.
You crane your neck to apologize to the unusually tall Spider-Man, staring in horror at his scaly face, rows of sharp teeth bearing down at you as he growls angrily. His large shadow looms over you. The tray clunks loudly on the tiled floor, acting as a death bell for you.
"I'm so sorry!" You say weakly, trembling in your suit.
The T-rex steps towards you, footsteps rumbling like little earthquakes. You instinctively walk back, eyes trained on the dinosaur, ready to swing away in case he snaps his jaws at you.
"I'm sorry! I'll get it dry cleaned, please don't eat me–" something hits the back of your knees making you fall on something sturdy. "Oof" you let out, Your back hits someone's chest, strong hands over your waist, steadying you. Craning your neck to the left, you're face to face with someone familiar.
"Falling for me now huh, lovey?" Hobie's fave is mere inches away from yours, brown eyes staring at your flustered face.
"I-uh..hmm?" You could only manage to make noise, noticing how warm his palms are against the spandex of your suit.
Hobie smirks at your reaction, turning his head to address the T-rex that's been hunting you. "Hey big man, they said sorry already. We're on the same team, yeah?"
Spider-Rex huffs out, air coming out of his nose. He drops his head down to your height, you cling tighter on Hobie's torso, much to his satisfaction.
The dinosaur nudges your legs with his snout, as if to say: you owe me dry cleaning.
"Just send me the bill" you chuckle nervously.
Spider-rex huffs one more time, hot air hitting you and Hobie, you try to hide your face on his chest, not caring if the pins on his vest poke your skin. Hobie holds the side of your face, shielding you, his head lays on your temple, piercing cold on your skin.
"Alright! They got it!" Gwen steps in between you and your scaly friend, hands on her hips.
Spider-rex finally leaves, the floor shaking as he moves. Gwen clicks her tongue, tapping her foot in annoyance.
"Fuck, you okay?" Hobie ducks his head to meet your gaze. Fingers fixing your unruly brows that must've ruffled it when the dinosaur huffed and puffed. "He's all bark and no bite. Don't worry he doesn't eat fellow spider-people, usually" he says softly while he rubs your arms comfortably.
"Usually?" You ask in a small voice, slowly realizing you're sitting on his lap. Quite comfortably if you dare add.
He chuckles, "You planning on staying here? I don't mind" Hobie plays it off as he pokes your side.
"Right, sorry" practically jumping off his lap, feet landing back on solid ground, your shyness taking over. "Was I crushing you?" You ask softly.
"Nah," he reassures you. "Come sit down with me" Hobie scooches over, giving you space to sit right next to him.
Gwen drops her tray on the table, clicking her tongue. "I'll get something for you to eat, okay" she pats your shoulder. You nod appreciatively. "Play nice, Hobie" Gwen points an accusing finger at Hobie. "Be right back"
"I'm always nice, Gwendy" He raises his hands in surrender. Hobie notices your apprehension, he gestures for you to sit down across from him this time, as to not make you uncomfortable.
You bravely choose the seat next to him, surprising you both. He smiles when you slide next to him. Your spine is unnaturally straight, muscle tensed. Bashfulness at the forefront.
Hobie wants you to relax so he decides to wordlessly offer you his tray of food. "Wanna share mine?"
A soft smile curls around your lips, affection blooming in your chest. "You sure?"
"Yeah, only if it's with you" Hobie's eyes are soft, gazing at you longingly.

Chilean paleontologists have released their findings on a new duck-billed dinosaur named Gonkoken nanoi, which inhabited Chilean Patagonia in the late Cretaceous, in the late age of the Dinosaur, approximately 70 mya.
The name Gonkoken nanoi means similar to koken or swan in Tehuelche language,  the indigenous people that inhabited the region where this species was found, and nanoi in honort to Mario “Nano” Ulloa, who helped during expeditions. It is estimated that it could have measured between 3.5 and 4 meters in length and weighed between 600 kilograms and one ton.
Chilean Patagonia could have been a refuge for these primitive forms of hadrosaurs, which would have migrated to the Southern Hemisphere long before more advanced forms, and it is believed these hadrosaur may have even reached Antarctica, when it was connected to South America.

Today’s Exhibit of the Day? The Museum’s mummified hadrosaur—one of the most complete pieces of Mesozoic dinosaur remains ever found! This fossil represents one of the greatest discoveries in the history of paleontology: a rare glimpse at the texture of dinosaur skin. Like the skin on modern birds’ feet, this duck-billed dinosaur’s skin was marked by bumps called tubercles. The tubercles are larger along the animal’s back and sides and smaller around the joints, which needed to be flexible.

An incredibly rare discovery: a complete hadrosaur skeleton.
The fossil is of the large, plant-eating, duck-billed species was found sticking out of a hillside at Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada.
At the moment, all that’s visible of the fossil is a portion of the dinosaur’s tail and right hind leg, but researchers Brian Pickles of the University of Reading and Caleb Brown from the Royal Tyrrell Museum explained that the way in which the fossil is arranged suggests the skeleton is in a sitting position — and may be fully preserved within the hill.
According to Brown, roughly 400 to 500 dinosaur bones have been excavated from the area — but finding any fossils with skin is quite rare. Even rarer is finding a dinosaur preserved in the same position as they were in life.

Minqaria bata Longrich et al., 2024 (new genus and species)
Tumblr media
(Type specimen of Minqaria bata [scale bar = 5 cm], from Longrich et al., 2024)
Meaning of name: Minqaria = beak [in Arabic]; bata = duck [in Arabic]
Age: Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian)
Where found: Sidi Chennane, Béni Mellal-Khénifra, Morocco
How much is known: Partial skull of one individual.
Notes: Minqaria was a hadrosaurid (duck-billed dinosaur). It was small for a member of this group, estimated as having been about 3.5 m in total body length and weighing around 250 kg. Another hadrosaurid of similar size, Ajnabia, lived alongside it, suggesting that a range of small hadrosaurids were present in North Africa near the end of the Cretaceous.

OWEN'S NEXT TOP BEASTIE: EXTINCT ANIMALS WILD CARD ROUND 1
Tumblr media
information + propaganda under the cut!!
Spinosaurus
Bio: Spinosaurus were river-dwelling carnivores that lived during the Cretaceous period. Their name comes from the distinctive 'sail' on their back, made up of seven-foot tall spines. Spinosaurus was a strong swimmer and a fierce predator, hunting almost exclusively in the water. Its skull was long and crocodile-like, with greater bone density for more control over its buoyancy, and it's currently the largest known carnivorous dinosaur at ~46-59 feet in length.
Propaganda: these dudes are fuckin sick. my favorite dinosaur by a long shot and i shouldnt have to explain why. also every new discovery seems to steer them away from being a sick ass carnivore to a duck billed weirdo and im so here for ittttt
Anomalocaris
Bio: Anomalocaris were the greatest thing to happen to the Cambrian period. These funky little bastards had a body structure so unconventional it defied classification for years. They were apex predators of the Cambrian ocean, and one of the key species in defining the predator-prey relationships we recognize today. Giant compound eyes for visual hunting, huge grasping tendrils out front, and a segmented body- what's not to love?
Propaganda: just go here ok?
