Apart from a single occasion (where I was really cash-strapped and cut costs with a middle-of-the-road Mac-mini which I upgraded myself), when updating my computer systems, I have purchased a MacBook-Pro for flexibility. Something “Wicked This Way Comes” in the Clouds (Black and White) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While out on a morning stroll and walking up this hill in a west Austin neighborhood, I noticed these clouds going by off in the distance. My first thought was that title from the Ray Bradbury book. The next thought was that a black-and-white image would definitely best capture the mood with the clouds. I later did that conversation using Silver Efex Pro 2 where I made some adjustments to color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.

What do you use to edit your photos?!!

For many of my black and white photos I shoot JPEGs and don't edit, except to slightly crop in iPhotos. I have been pleased with the JPEGs my Sony makes, especially the high-contrast black and white.

If I am taking photos at night, indoors, or with poor lighting conditions, I will shoot the photo in RAW format, with the JPEG produced by the camera for reference. I pre-process the photo using DXO PureRAW. This sharpens the image and gets rid of noise. It is a pretty amazing tool and I highly recommend it for anyone shooting in RAW. I then use Adobe Lightroom to edit the photo. If I decide I want to process the RAW image as black and white I use DXO NIK Silver Efex Pro 3, as it emulates film much better than Lightroom. I also sometimes use DXO NIK Analog Efex for a vintage look.

I am colorblind, so I rely a lot on Lightroom's presets for color photos. I usually make several different versions of a color photo and run them past my wife to select the best-looking image. If not for my wife, I probably would never make color photos

This made it much more accessible to the casual photographer and increased its popularity. They reduced the price of the Nik Collection to $150 (from $500). They were developed by Nik Software, which also developed Snapseed, a popular mobile phone editing app. Nik plugins have been around since the late 1990s. This popular suite of photo editing plugins has a history. Color Efex Pro 4 creates pops of colour in the dunes and deepens the blues of the sky. Black & White Image of Lichen, Rock Formations and Hillsides in Pinnacles National Park (Black & White, HDR) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: Captured while walking the Balconies Cave Loop with a view looking to the southeast in Pinnacles National Park. I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete color setting in the image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 6 where I did some adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image. I then exported that TIFF image to Silver Efex Pro 3 where I made some adjustments to color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.

Today is my last full day in Cannes for this year and tiredness has caught up. Luckily I had a few hours this morning to relax before heading out for the amFar event.

Its quite obvious from the work I post here and to instagram (@edwards_photo) that I love to work in black and white. Although my personal “walk around” fuji at home is set to the ACROS film simulation and I therefore shoot in monochrome, whilst working, I have to shoot colour and so use Silver Efex Pro, part of the NIK collection now owned by DXO to convert copies to Black and White. (My shooting style does not change , colour or mono, my images are still very much driven by light and shade).

Silver Efex Pro is included in a suite of products that also includes Colour EFex Pro and Analog Efex Pro. I originally purchased the suite back in the days when it was still owned by NIK (before the days of it being brought by Google, released for free and treated very poorly). Luckily DXO have now taken it on board and are moving forward.

Although I use Silver EFex all the time, I rarely play with the other applications, despite having them all set up as export/edits in my Lightroom.

In my fee time this morning I decided to play with the other tools, looking back over some of the images I have taken on the streets of Cannes this year whilst moving between venues.

Combining the tools allows a large number of effects to be added, either subtly or completely over the top.

Filters and the like are scorned on in professional photography circles and of course nd a severe no-no in the press photography world but it’s always nice to have some creative fun and additional tools in the armoury do not hurt.
