Sharing another longer comic I made for The Nib back in 2016, since they'll be shutting up shop at the end of this year. This piece was such a great excuse to dig deep into the world of sail-powered cargo! I particularly loved talking to the team behind Ceiba, who are now years into their build and documenting the entire shipbuilding process along the way.

This represents a transversal section of the mast viewed from the top, it has a solid carbon core, on this section we have fitted that core with a steel reinforcement casing because we are going to need it
The reason why we have such a strong width steel reinforcement on this section is because underneath it we have an electromagnets ring that it supports
Possibly all of the carbon inner core has a steel casing, less important in terms of width, that can still allow us to conserve some flexibility why we have the carbon core, with an outer carbon casing and very likely high density foam in between
On any given section the mast is strong, but overall its length flexible
Underneath that ring we have our carbon yards that are encased in the mast, yet because that section of the mast is now orientable using electromagnets we can gyrate each section, each sails to a given angle forming a helicoidal ensemble
And that's something that a Dynarig can't do
So looking at that large sail one thinks that it's clumsy, it's anything but clumsy, each of the 8 sails that constitute it readjusts its angle and orientation, especially when veering
Also structurally strong, we wanted to keep the design see through but the section where the yarns are attached is one piece
Again another electromagnets ring beneath the yards section to have the mobility that we want, efficient and reliable
The Dynamast is a bit of a biomorphic design inspired by the human dorsal column, likewise it has a limited amplitude, I think that 60° on each side would do, -60, 0, +60 so 120° in total
But of course it is an evolution of the Dynarig, and we want to work with the Dynarig team who have produced very important data regarding structural stress, especially on the base of the mast
Yes but it looks like this mast is much lesser above and has a wider base so how does it cope with these 8 sails, providing they are equal in area that is correct, I think that the vertical distribution of these yards, where these sails area becomes gradually less nearer to the top, holds the answer to that
Ultimately the goal is not to bruteforce the orientation of the mast and its sails, sequential helicoidal angle distributions of the 8 sails, coupled with the orientation of the rudders below should provide for a smooth sailing ship, where we have these sails scoop the wind in sequences depending where the rudders orient the ship
It is possible that at some point you want to stow away the top sails to force the ship in a given direction, but that is what sailing in made from
There might be rules embedded in the navigation system of the EXPLORER, where the median angle distribution of the sails can never be more or less different than 30% of the median angle of the rudders, if you don't have that you want to stow away some of the higher sails to get away with it
At any rate there is a lot to discover for the skipper of this ship, and that also has to do with its mast and sails

The Best Superyacht Concepts of 2019
The Best Superyacht Concepts of 2019
At the forefront of innovation and creativity worldwide, the superyacht industry continues to deliver ground-breaking designs of the next generation. Design studios and shipyards across the industry share a drive to take on ever more challenging projects, leading to exciting concepts that stir the imagination. We handpick some of the most forward-thinking and inspiring designs that have come to light over 2019.
Valkyrie
Where better to start than the blueprint for the world’s largest ever superyacht?
At beginning of the year Chulhun Park, now Chief Designer of Latitude Yachts, spoke to Superyachts.com about his gigantic 229m concept, Valkyrie. To say that this concept is unconventional is an understatement. More than her pure size, Valkyrie presents a complete reinvention of the notion of yachting. Valkyrie’s non-rectilinear shapes and curved lines have been intricately penned to reflect both sunlight and moonlight, creating harmony with the nature that surrounds her.
It is not just the profile of this superyacht that redefines traditional notions. Valkyrie’s function, described by Park as a “floating entertainment hub”, is truly unique. Fitted with a casino, theatre, gallery and convention hall, Valkyrie is intended to be open for public access and for an owner this offers a promising return on investment.
Developed in collaboration with Palmer Johnson where Park previously worked as Senior Exterior Designer, Valkyrie is no doubt one of the most ambitious projects the industry has seen.
SY300
Philippe Briand’s 90-metre megayacht concept is both an aesthetic and engineering masterpiece. Using his experience working on renowned sailing yacht projects such as Vertigo and Sybaris, Briand has reverted to the use of carbon fibre masts on this latest project, while a sleek design certainly hasn’t impacted the enormous exterior spaces on board.
The most admirable feature of SY300 is her self-sufficiency. As the industry moves into a new chapter dominated by efficient designs for the protection of the environment, Briand’s SY300 is fully wind-propelled with a remarkable hydrodynamic efficiency. It may seem strange to praise a sailing yacht for being efficiently powered, but over the years many sailing yachts have effectively become motor yachts with sails. With this concept, Philippe Briand has responded to the demand for efficiency in the industry and simultaneously restored the authenticity of the sailing experience.
Project Lotus
Another from the mega-sailing yacht category, Royal Huisman’s dual-ship Lotus concept is for the thrill-seekers. Project Lotus offers a unique sailing experience and comprises of a package of 2 superyachts.
The first, and the mothership, is an 88m Two Mast DynaRig sailing vessel designed with smart innovation including solar technology in the masts that reduce the environmental impact while enhancing performance. The imposing 88m superyacht is accompanied by a 70m Shadow support vessel built for versatility. While hosting the owner’s arsenal of toys and equipment, the Shadow vessel is a visual complement to the DynaRig superyacht and can also be used independently for adventures to remote locations.  The integration of these two superyachts aims to get the best out of both motor and sailing experience, and clearly acknowledges the owner-driven trend towards more explorer-type vessels capable of reaching new destinations.
The stunning lines of both these yachts was the work of British design studio ThirtyC, and Royal Huisman has praised the innovative design. The Dutch shipyard has stated that Lotus is “a masterpiece offering complete customisation, open spaces, reduced complexity in terms of both rigging and crew as well as an engineering package that fits both luxury and agility on the water.”
After a successful presentation at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, we hope to see this captivating design come to life in the not-so-distant future.
VIS
Francesco Paszkowski revisits the Fincantieri Group’s military history with this alternative superyacht concept.
For over 230 years, the Fincantieri Group delivered all naval vessels from aircraft carriers to destroyers and submarines. Capturing and translating this history into a superyacht, Paszkowski has created what can quite simply be described as a luxurious battleship.
The 80.80m VIS is something the superyacht industry has never seen before, offering a unique experience far removed from the traditional white vessels. Her formidable military styled exterior provides a dominant figure on the waters, complete with shrewdly thought out exterior spaces that maximises liveability. Inside the superyacht, the rugged profile hides a bright and elegant layout, a contrasting air of serenity and sophistication opened up by large panoramic windows throughout.
The 6-deck concept makes innovative use of spaces, with folding-out terraces and wide social alfresco areas on the exterior. A solar-panelled roof on the wheelhouse bridge ensures guests can enjoy the bar and large pool while being protected from the sun. While styling has been kept minimalistic for a sophisticated feel, there are touches that show the ingenuity of the architecture at hand. One such feature is the winter garden, surrounding the scenic lift in the wide lobby. The upper deck, dedicated exclusively to the owner, is fitted with a gym and a large sheltered terrace. Direct access from the owner’s stateroom to the helipad is provided through two stairways on either side of the main deck lobby.

エンジニア的「ブラックパール号」:世界一巨大なエコフレンドリーヨット
Tumblr media

Oceanco's Black Pearl: Everything you need to know about the biggest sailing yacht in the world
The largest sailing yacht in the world, Oceanco's Black Pearl also boasts a hybrid diesel electric system and can reach 17.5 knots under power
Tumblr media
That's a big sailing boat!
It sure is! At 350ft (106.7m) long and built out of steel and aluminum by Netherlands based Oceanco, 'Black Pearl' is the biggest sailing boat in the world! She's almost 50ft wide!
Hang on, 'Sailing Yacht A' is larger isn't it?
Yes it is, considerably, but it's not actually a sailing boat. 'Sailing Yacht A' is actually a sail assisted motor yacht. The sails help power it.
So 'Black Pearl' will run fuel free?
Completely. And I really do mean completely. Under the right conditions, as the boat sails and the propellers are dragged through the water they spin up to create efficient generators. Add the solar sails, and clever features like on board heat regeneration, and the sun and the wind will power the entire ship without burning a drop of diesel!
That's incredible! But those masts look huge, it must take ages to set the sails?
The three 70m (230ft) tall DynaRig carbon masts were designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and support 2,900 square meters of sail. Amazingly, full sail can be set or furled at the touch of a button in just seven minutes.
Tumblr media
But you can motor it too?
Of course. In addition to wind power, she is powered by a hybrid diesel electric system. 2 x 1080kW MTU's linked to 2 x 400kW electrical propulsion motors.
  How fast can it go?
17.5 knots under power, faster under sail. 30 knots is possible in the right conditions.
Presumably there's plenty of space for people too?
Her accommodations include a master suite, two VIP suites, two double guest cabins and a full beam beach club, that converts into a cinema. There's an all glass lift to take you between decks too, Willy Wonka would be proud.

Superyacht Black Pearl features her fantastic DynaRig. Unlike conventional triangular sails where enormous loads are at the head, tack, and clew, the rectangular sails don’t see that kind of loading. They also don’t see the kind of chafe found on more conventional masts. In fact, where a conventional sloop rig will need some high-tech membrane sails made from the latest high-tech fiber to manage the loads, the sails for many DynaRigs have gone retro and are made out of Dacron. This dramatically reduces the cost of sails, and you also end up with sails that are easy to maintain. Most sailmakers anywhere in the world are familiar with Dacron and can do the necessary maintenance. Also, remember that once the boat is at the dock or on anchor, the sails are neatly tucked into the mast away from the constant threat of UV degradation. @oceancoyacht @dykstranavalarchitects #yachtstyle #yachtphotography #yachtworld #supersailing #sailing #luxury #luxuryyacht #superyacht #boating #boats #sea #summer #travel #yachtlife #lux #yachting #yacht #instaboating #instasailing #instaluxury #island #ocean #lovetheocean #theexquisite #megayachts #yachtinglifestyle #yachtweek #yachtscharters #yachtingmagazine https://www.instagram.com/p/CFs1WDfAC8r/?igshid=sjmtktr23dei
