Physicist Netta Engelhardt is searching black holes for universal truths

As Netta Engelhardt sees it, secrets never die. Not even in a black hole.

Engelhardt is a theoretical physicist at MIT who is teasing out the convoluted physics in and around black holes, in search of the fundamental ingredients that shape our universe. In the process, she’s upending popular ideas in the fields of quantum and gravitational physics.

One of the biggest revelations from her work to date is the way in which information that falls into a black hole can avoid being lost forever. In 2019, shortly before coming to MIT, she and other physicists used gravitational methods to demonstrate that whatever might happen to the information inside a black hole can in principle be undone as the black hole evaporates away.

The team’s conclusion stunned the physics community, as it constituted the most quantitative direct advance toward resolving the longstanding black hole information paradox — a conundrum raised in the work of physicist Stephen Hawking. The paradox pits in opposition two theories that both appear to be true: one, the pillar of “unitarity,” which is the principle that information in the universe is neither created nor destroyed; and two, a calculation by Hawking from standard gravitational physics showing that information can indeed be destroyed, specifically, when radiating out from an evaporating black hole.

“Imagine you had a diary and you set it on fire in the lab,” Engelhardt explains. “According to unitarity, if you knew the fundamental dynamics of the universe, you could take the ashes and reverse-engineer them to see the diary and its contents. It would be very difficult, but you could do it. But Hawking’s calculation shows that, even if you knew the fundamental dynamics of the universe, you still couldn’t reverse-engineer the process of black hole evaporation.”

Engelhardt, then at Princeton University, and her colleagues showed that, contrary to Hawking’s calculation, it is possible to use gravitational physics to see that the process of black hole evaporation does in fact conserve information.

As a newly tenured member of the MIT faculty, Engelhardt is now tackling other longstanding questions about gravity, hoping to fill the last, largest gaps in physicists’ understanding of the universe at the most fundamental scales.

“At the end of the day, I’m driven by questions about nature and how the universe works,” says Engelhardt, who is now an associate professor of physics. “Answering these questions is a vocation.”

Gateway to gravity

Engelhardt was born in Jerusalem, where she developed an early interest in all things science. When she was 9, she and her family moved to Boston, partly so that her mother could enroll in a visiting scholars program in MIT Linguistics. New to America, and having only learned to read in Hebrew, Engelhardt spent those first weeks reading every book the family brought with them, some of them atypical for a 9-year-old.

“I read all the books we had left in Hebrew, until at long last, there was just one left, which was Stephen Hawking’s ‘A Brief History of Time.’”

Hawking’s book was Engelhardt’s first introduction to black holes, the Big Bang, and the fundamental forces and building blocks that shape the universe. What she found especially exciting were the missing pieces to physicists’ understanding.

“People can spend their entire life searching for answers to these very foundational questions that I just found completely fascinating,” Engelhardt says. “Where does the universe come from? What are the fundamental building blocks? Those are questions I realized I just wanted to know the answer to. And from that point on, I wasn’t just set on physics — I was set on quantum gravity at 9.”

She fed that early spark through college, double-majoring in physics and math at Brandeis University. She went on to the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she pursued a PhD in physics and really began to dig into the puzzle of quantum gravity, a field that seeks to describe the effects of gravity according to the principles of quantum mechanics.

The theory of quantum mechanics is a remarkably good blueprint for describing the interactions in nature at the scale of atoms and smaller. These quantum interactions are governed by three of the four fundamental forces that physicists know of. But the fourth force, gravity, has eluded quantum mechanical explanation, particularly in situations where the effect of gravity is overwhelming, such as deep inside black holes.

In such extreme regimes, there is no prediction for how matter and gravity behave. Such a theory would complete physicists’ understanding of the universe’s workings at the most fundamental scales.

For Engelhardt, quantum gravity is also a gateway to other mysterious questions to be answered. For example, the way in which space and time emerge from something even more fundamental. Engelhardt spent much of her graduate work focused on questions about the geometry of spacetime, and how its curvature may emerge from something more basic as described by quantum gravity.

“Those are big questions to tackle,” Engelhardt admits. “The largest bulk of my time is spent thinking, hmm, how do I take this vague intuition and condense it into a question that can be concretely answered, quantitatively? That’s a large part of the progress you can make.”

A black hole imprint

In 2014, midway through her PhD work, Engelhardt honed one of her questions about quantum gravity and spacetime emergence to a specific problem: how to compute the quantum corrections to the entropy of gravitating systems.

“There are surfaces (in spacetime) that are sensitive to gravitational (curving) called extremal surfaces,” Engelhardt explains. “There already was a formula that used such surfaces to compute the entropy of gravitational systems in the absence of quantum effects. But in realistic quantum gravity, there are quantum effects, and I wanted a formula that took that into account.”

She and postdoc Aron Wall worked to construct a general equation that would describe how entropy of gravitating regions should be computed when quantum effects are taken into account. The result: quantum extremal surfaces, a quantum generalization of the old classical surfaces.

At the time, the exercise was purely theoretical, as the quantum effects from most processes in the universe are too small to even slightly wobble the surrounding spacetime. Their new equation, therefore, would land on similar predictions as the purely classical counterpart.

But in 2019, as a postdoc at Princeton, Engelhardt and others realized that this equation might give a very different prediction for what a quantum extremal surface might do, and what the corresponding quantum gravitational entropy would be, in one specific situation: as a black hole evaporates. What’s more, what the equation predicts could be the key to resolving the longstanding black hole information paradox.

“This was a very dramatic moment,” she recalls. “Everyone was working around the clock to try to figure this out, not really sleeping at night because we were so excited.”

After three sleep-deprived weeks, the physicists were convinced that they had made a dramatic step toward resolving the paradox: As a black hole evaporates and releases radiation in a scrambled form of the information that originally fell into it, a new, completely nonclassical quantum extremal surface emerges, resulting in a gravitational entropy that shrinks as more information radiates away. They reasoned that this surface can serve as an imprint of the radiated information, which could in principle be used to reconstruct the original information, which Stephen Hawking had shown would be lost forever.

“That was a Eureka! moment,” she says. “I remember driving home, and thinking, and maybe even saying out loud, ‘I think this is it!’’

It’s not yet clear what Hawking was actually calculating to assume the contrary. But Engelhardt considers the paradox close to resolved, at least in broad strokes, and her team’s work has held up to repeated checks and careful scrutiny. In the meantime, she set her sights on other questions.

Testing pillars

Engelhardt’s breakthrough came in May of 2019. Just two months later, she headed to Cambridge to start her faculty position at MIT. She first visited the campus and interviewed for the position in 2017.

“There was a palpable sense of excitement about science in the Center for Theoretical Physics, and you feel it everywhere — it permeates the Institute,” she recalls. “That was one of the reasons I wanted to be at MIT.”

She was offered the position, which she accepted and chose to defer for a year to complete her postdoc at Princeton. In July 2019, she started at MIT as an assistant professor of physics.

In the early days on campus, as she set up her research group, Engelhardt followed up on the black hole information paradox, to see if she could find out not only how Hawking got it wrong but what he was actually calculating, if not the entropy of the radiation.

“At the end of the day, if you really want to resolve the paradox, we have to explain what Hawking’s mistake was,” Engelhardt says.

Her hunch is that he was in a way computing a different quantity altogether. She believes Hawking’s work, which raised the paradox to begin with, might have been computing a different type of gravitational entropy, that appears to result in information loss when run forward as a black hole evaporates. However, this other form of gravitational entropy does not correspond to information content, and so its increase would not be paradoxical.

Today, she and her students are following up on questions related to quantum gravity as well as a thornier concept having to do with singularities — instances when an object such as a star collapses into a region so gravitationally intense as to destroy spacetime itself. Physicists historically have predicted that singularities should only be present behind a black hole’s event horizon, though others have seen hints that they exist outside of these gravitational boundaries.

“A lot of my work now is going into understanding how many pillars of gravitational physics are just not true as we currently understand them,” she says. “Answering these questions is the ultimate motivation.”

Geology: I think geology should be one of the big fields of science. It doesn’t really fit neatly as a branch of physics, chemistry, or biology since it draws on all three.

Physics: No. For one, everything is physics so that argument doesn't mean anything.

Biology: Also we’re called ‘the big three’, if we added another then it’d be, like, more than three. Some mysterious higher number.

Chemistry: Besides, we’re the big fields because we’re the most important and popular.

I'm glad you came to my ask box; Currently I do not remember most of the resources I once used, but once I remember I will reblog that post.

- Benoit B. Mandelbrot's book "The fractal geometry of nature" is pretty good for getting a good "visualized idea" of the topic of chaos theory, fractal geometry and dynamical systems. It uses helpful analogies and some parts are really awe-inspiring - overall, good food for the imagination as well!

Geometry dash lore interpretation post

I think it's about time that I spread the lore and concepts that I modified for geometry dash because I'm really invested in the game (gameplay wise and lore wise) so here is the summary (warning: it is LONG):

The geometry dash app or game or whatever you'd like to call it is an actual facility in the middle of nowhere. If you go outside you will literally see thousands of miles of absolute darkness and the only light comes from the facility itself. Now if you enter you will find yourself in the menu where you can go to the official levels made by rubrub himself or head to the custom level section.

The darker areas signify how deep below ground the rooms are. There are also some hidden passageways that connect some places like the passageway that connects the shopkeepers shop with scratch's shop.

And I'd like to clarify that I interpret the levels as portals that the players can jump into (as well as the other characters but they aren't exactly supposed to do that...)

This is the same map but I put the in game screenshots to better understand what I mean.

Anyways now onto the characters:

(I don't have any high quality pictures of this guy, so sorry bout that.) He's the player (based off the default cube that you start off when you first boot the game). He's mostly silent and is the source of this conundrum. He represents the regular player's action: going into the levels, buying stuff from the shop and freeing those who shouldn't be freed. There are other cubes/players of course but they are usually doing what they are supposed to do and they stay out of trouble (unlike this miscreant).

We've also got the shopkeepers. The original three are the shopkeeper, Scratch and Potbor: The shopkeeper is just your regular guy just trying to make a living wage; Potbor is a special security droid that acts as surveillance but is disguised as a shopkeeper (he hasn't got a clue of what he's doing) and is rubrubs dear and precious child robot; Scratch is another robot that was thrown away and forgotten about due to his design being flawed (he is a draft design, so to speak), so he found an old abandoned shop left by another shopkeeper and is currently in hiding whilst selling whatever he can find in the trash bins.

Then there are the other new shop owners. The mechanic is the same species as the shopkeeper but due to an incident he has built and installed implants for himself and has now become a cyborg. He is also responsible for creating scratch, Potbor and the diamond shopkeeper. The diamond shopkeeper is just another regular robot shopkeeper that relies on the diamond plastered in his chest to be up and running. Without it, he is good as dead.

And as for their dynamics....

The shopkeeper and scratch are good buddies and they help each other out. And by help each other out I mean the shopkeeper is constantly panicking and saving scratch's ass from being caught.

Potbor is not aware of scratch's existence but if the two were to meet Potbor would neutralise him on the spot.

The mechanic is aware of scratch's existence (obviously) and constantly regrets not killing him when he had the chance so now he has to deal with him trying to get past his security.

And the diamond shopkeeper is...strange. He isn't the brightest tool in the shed but he makes up for it by being the mechanics bodyguard.

Enough shopkeeper stuff, let's move onto the guardians:

Glubfub or the "Key master" is the giant hulk-like beast that is in charge keeping the "demon guarding" locked up (I will bring him up later) and is the guarding of the vault of secrets.

Spooky or "the Guard" is the Tumblr sexyman and is in charge of... something. Rubrub makes him believe that he has the most important job of all and he takes it to heart. Unlike the other guardians he takes his position as a guardian very seriously (that's why he wears the suit but he doesn't really need it) and is rubrub's #1 fan.

The Gatekeeper is the oldest of the guardians and is the closest one to rubrub. Whilst everyone sees lord rubrub as this omnipotent god (which he kinda is) the Gatekeeper (or the old man as I like to call him) sees him as a coworker and is not afraid to tell things straight to his face. He also guards something (not sure what) as well as the key which unlocks one of the demon guardians locks.

And last but not least you've got rubrub himself and the demon guardian. If you know the Og geometry dash lore there's no need for an introduction. Lord Robtop or Rubrub is the boss of the facility and rarely appears within it's walls, opting to rest in his own private chambers. His mortal form is literally just a cube so he had the mechanic build him a robot body (I know he looks like Steve jobs I tell myself that every day).

The demon guardian was originally just a guardian like the others but decided that he was done with idolising and worshipping rubrub and went rogue. Obviously rubrub wasn't having any of that so he attempted to delete him. That failed and now he is this unstoppable beast that can shape shift into anyone (with some limitations) and wants to destroy the facility and escape the void. Robtop stopped him, however, and locked him away in the basement for god knows how long...till the player arrived.

And ONE LAST THING! If you're as obsessed as me you might notice a certain pattern appearing in some of the designs

Well this symbol is a sign of one's devotion for rubrub and almost every single character that is not being hunted down has it. For example: the Gatekeeper has it tattooed in his tongue, Spooky has it in his chest, and the demon guardian has it tattooed in the back of his head but scratched it of with his claws so now he has a scar.

String theory postulates the existence of additional compactified dimensions that are curled up and imperceptible at macroscopic scales. These dimensions are believed to influence the behavior of subatomic particles and underlie the fundamental forces of nature. M-theory extends this notion by encompassing multiple possible geometries and allowing for a broader range of dimensions. It is so important to discern genuine information from the influence of the Theosophical Society, which has at times distorted and popularized certain aspects. The society's appropriation and misrepresentation of spiritual concepts, such as the astral plane, have led to a bastardization of authentic beliefs. For example, the Theosophical Society popularized the notion of the astral plane as a realm inhabited by disembodied entities, deviating from its original context within esoteric traditions.

The concept of spiritual planes spans across diverse belief systems and religions, each offering unique perspectives and interpretations. For instance, in Hinduism, the concept of "lokas" refers to different realms or planes of existence, such as the physical realm (Bhuloka), the celestial realm (Svarloka), and the abode of the divine (Brahmaloka). While the specific characteristics of spiritual planes may vary, some common elements emerge across different belief systems. These include the presence of heightened consciousness, divine energies or entities, transformative experiences, and access to higher knowledge. Spiritual planes are often described as existing beyond the physical realm, serving as realms of expanded awareness and connection to the divine or transcendent forces.

Spiritual planes encompass a range of realms beyond our immediate sensory perception. The astral plane, often discussed in esoteric traditions, is considered a realm of psychic and emotional energies. The ethereal plane is described as a realm of subtle energies and spiritual beings. Beyond these, the celestial planes are associated with realms of higher consciousness and divine presence. It is important to note that the categorization of these planes can vary across different belief systems.

The interactions between dimensions and spiritual planes are subjects of great interest and contemplation. While dimensions pertain to the structure of space and time, spiritual planes exist beyond these physical dimensions, yet are intricately connected to them. However, it is crucial to distinguish between genuine esoteric teachings and the popularization of the astral plane in certain New Age and Christofascist movements. Some individuals and groups have appropriated and distorted the concept of the astral plane, aligning it with their own ideologies and personal narratives.

A prevalent misconception surrounding the astral plane is the belief that it is inhabited by spiritual entities or beings. However, it is important to note that the astral plane itself is not a dwelling place for independent entities. Rather, it is a realm of energy and consciousness that reflects the thoughts, emotions, and intentions of individuals who access it. The perception of entities in the astral plane often arises from personal narratives, personal beliefs, or symbolic representations rather than the existence of actual separate beings. These narratives often stem from individuals who do not genuinely access the astral plane.

Perception and interaction with the astral plane vary among individuals and spiritual practitioners. It is commonly experienced through altered states of consciousness, such as deep meditation or astral projection. (*2a) However, it is important to note that the astral plane is not accessed through visualizing or imagining specific entities or landscapes. In fact, relying heavily on visualization during astral experiences can be a sign of failing to enter the authentic astral plane, as it indicates a reliance on mental constructs rather than a true connection. In order to enter the astral plane, one must break away from their physical body and move into their subtle body (astral form). Visualization is a mental and physical process and will keep a practitioner locked in their body.

For witches, the astral plane can serve as a valuable tool for spiritual exploration (*3a), self-discovery, and magical practice. By accessing the astral plane, witches can tap into aspects of their own being, gain insights, and work with potent subtle energies that they normally have difficulty accessing. They may engage in astral travel to gain knowledge, receive guidance (*4a), or create complex and sprawling energetic constructs. The astral plane can also be a space for ritual work, spellcasting, and experimentation.

The Dream Plane

The dream plane is a fascinating realm of consciousness that exists parallel to our waking reality. It is a domain where dreams unfold and where the mind explores and experiences a multitude of scenarios and emotions. Unlike physical locations, the dream plane is not bound by conventional notions of space and time. It transcends the limitations of the physical realm, offering a platform for profound exploration of the subconscious mind.

Throughout history, dreams have held significant cultural and spiritual importance in various societies. Ancient civilizations, such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Native Americans, recognized the profound insights and messages that dreams could convey. Dream interpretation was considered an art, with dreams being seen as portals to hidden truths, divine messages, or glimpses into the future. These cultural perspectives highlight the belief in the dream plane as a gateway to the mystical and the profound.

One common misconception regarding the dream plane involves the belief in the existence of entities or supernatural beings within dreams. However, it is important to understand that dreams primarily originate from the depths of the dreamer's own mind. The various characters, events, and environments encountered in dreams are often representations of personal experiences, emotions, and subconscious processes, rather than external entities or supernatural phenomena.

As far as science understands, the dream experience is a complex interplay of psychological and physiological processes. It’s hard to forget the first time getting your heart broken by your best friend’s brother.

It was like a moment in a fairy tale when the nerd is able to score the popular guy at the end of the movie. Luca had shown up to Lia’s doorstep with a bouquet of flowers, a duck stuffed animal, and a sign which said:

I’D BE ONE LUCKY DUCK IF YOU WENT TO PROM WITH ME

Of course, she didn’t even hesitate to say yes. She rushed up to him and embraced him as tight as she could. After the proposal, it was all she could think and talk about.

Adam was happy to see Lia so happy. “I really didn’t think I would be a sophomore going to prom!” she squealed as she fell back onto her mattress, grabbing the stuffed duck from next to her.

Adam, on the other hand, sat at her desk trying to get his geometry homework done. The whole reason why he was at her house was to study with her, but she had gotten distracted with prom talk.

“I think I should get some credit for coming up with the idea,” he commented as he scribbled away at the equations on his worksheet.

Lia had the whole night planned out. First, Luca would stop by her house to pick her up. He would admire her and her sparkly dress when she came down the stairs like a princess being escorted to a ball.

Then, they would meet up with Adam and his date to take pictures with the Fantilli’s at the park. After that, they would go out to eat and make their way to the dance. They would dance and laugh and maybe even kiss at the end of the night.

After a month of waiting, it was finally the night Lia had been anticipating, and it started off like she had hoped it would.

She slipped into her shiny gold dress and matching heels after finishing up her hair and makeup. Like perfect sync, she heard the front door open and Luca’s voice echo throughout the house and up to her room.

She came down just like she had planned it out. Luca’s eyes met hers as she came down the stairs slowly. His jaw slacked as he watched her dress glisten in the light. When they finally met at the bottom, he couldn’t stop smiling.

“Cornelia,” he whispered. “You’re stunning.” He slid on her corsage to match his boutonnière, leaving a stupendous smile on her face. Even when taking pictures, he couldn’t stop staring at her. “You’re so beautiful, Lia,” he whispered into her ear as her mother snapped endless pictures of them.

It was a dream come true.

After being bombarded by her parents with pictures, they met up with Adam and his date, Emerson, at the park along with the boys’ parents.

Emerson was a girl from his mandatory art class freshman year, at the time she was a sophomore. They sat next to each other leaving Adam always distracted in class, but their dynamic was perfect because she was always there to help him pass.

She was a really pretty red head which Adam had developed feelings for shortly after meeting her. She wore a light pink dress with white heels and Adam wore a matching tie. They also had a matching pink corsage and boutonnière.

After pictures, the four of them went to get food at a steakhouse the Fantilli’s had reservations at before making their way to the dance.

Since Luca was the eldest brother, he had to drive them all everywhere. While Adam and Emerson sat in the backseat giggling with each other, Lia and Luca sat in the front.

Luca’s hand was rested on her leg. It felt so natural like it was meant to be there. Not only was his hand a secure feeling, but it also made her feel giddy.

Adam snuck in Fireball shooters into the dance without ease. Lia, Adam, and Emerson had their heads on a swivel, but there were people everywhere and it was easy to sneak off. The chaperones were exhausted teachers who were probably drunk themselves.

A slow song started to play which caught the attention of Adam and Emerson. Emerson placed her hand on his arm, signaling that she wanted to go out and dance. Adam smiled at her before turning his attention back to Lia. “I’m gonna dance with Emerson,” he said. “Luca should be back soon. Probably taking a shit.”

Lia flashed a false smile and watched as the two strayed off together, leaving her stranded by the table. She looked around the packed gymnasium full of couples slow dances with one another before downing her entire shooter. Her throat burned and her eyes watered as her entire face scrunched up due to the strong flavor. Even with the amount of people here, she still felt very alone.

‘I need to find Luca’, she thought to herself making her way to the bathrooms where he had excused himself to. She tossed out the now empty bottle as she exited through the gym doors.

Her heels clicked against the hard tile as she made her way through the dimly lit hallway. She could see the bathrooms just down the hall, but they looked completely stranded.

Around the corner, she could hear a girl’s voice. “You know we could’ve just talked on the dance floor,” the disembodied girl giggled.

Lia turned around to head back to the gym doors. That was until she heard his voice respond, causing her to stop dead in her tracks. “No, we can’t.”

That drew not only Lia’s attention to around that corner, but it also physically dragged her over to the corner. Luca’s voice grew louder the closer she got to the end of the hall. “You know I’m here with Lia. She’s my date, you’re not.”

Lia’s head peaked around the corner to see them standing across each other. It was Amber, Luca’s ex girlfriend. What could she possibly want to do with him after she dumped him? “But Luca,” she pouted as she dragged her finger down his neck. He shuddered before pushing it away. “I really miss you.”

He didn’t say anything back, he just huffed and stared at her. Lia watched as his eyes shifted from anger and annoyance to hurt in an instant.

What was she doing to him? She had him wrapped around her finger still, even after tossing him to the side like a dirty t-shirt. It infuriated Lia, but like a bad car wreck, she couldn’t look away.

Lia felt relieved when he said, “No, you don’t.”

Before he was able to escape her, Amber was able to suck him back in with her coy expression. “But, babe. If I didn’t miss you, would I want to do this?” In a swift motion, her lips had locked with his.

Lia’s heart dropped to her stomach as she watched the two. She couldn’t speak, her jaw just hung wide open. This wasn’t how the night was supposed to go. Luca was supposed to be kissing her! Not his ex!

The worst part of it all, Luca didn’t even pull away. He kissed her back for a second before pulling away and shaking his head. Even though it was a second, it was a second too long for Lia. “I can’t,” he said flatly. “I can’t do this to Lia.” He said he couldn’t, but he just did.

His turned his head to find Lia paralyzed in front of him as she fought back tears. His face turned whiter than a ghost, along with Amber’s. “Lia…” He discarded Amber and made his way over to her, but she shook her head.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Her eyes darted between both he and Amber. “Unbelievable. I expected this from Amber, but from you Luca?! I’m fucking done.”

She turned around to walk away, but Luca followed her. “Cornelia!” He grabbed onto her wrist, but she pulled away from his grip. “Please!”

Even when she was furious with him, she still couldn’t ignore him. She spun around and stared at him. Her doe brown eyes were now glossy with the tears she was doing everything in her power to fight back.

“What?!” she screamed. “What could you possibly want to say to me?!” He was taken aback from her yelling. His posture stiffened and he hunched his shoulders in an attempt to become smaller, possibly even invisible.

Lia didn’t even know what to do except stare at him with racing thoughts. She resisted the urge to punch him in the mouth.

What should she even do? Call him a bitch then leave him to sulk in his own thoughts?

Her mouth ran before her brain was ready. “Amber?” she choked out. “I mean, seriously? The girl you said you were over? Really, Luca?”

“It was a vulnerable moment,” he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. His eyes fell down to his feet, too ashamed to even look Lia in the eye.

She scoffed, “Am I just supposed to watch you stare at your feet?” The tears finally fell after fighting a treacherous war.

He snuck a glance up at her, a look of guilt swept across his features. If she hadn’t known better, she would’ve kissed him now to know how it felt. “You don’t deserve what you don’t respect, Luca. I’m done.”

“I don’t want to lose you, Cornelia!�� he finally replied. After hearing the words ‘I’m done’, he finally cracked. Not seeing her cry, not when she caught him kissing his ex, only when she cut it off.

She shook her head and spewed, “Can’t lose something you never had, Luca.” With that, she turned away and walked right back in the direction of the gymnasium.

Hearing him shout out her name caused her walking to turn to jogging as she sobbed even harder.

Where was Adam? She needed to find Adam.

She couldn’t find Adam before bumping into someone else on her way into the gym. “I’m really sorry!” she frantically apologized, wiping the tears away while avoiding eye contact with the man.

“Are you okay? What happened?” he hesitantly brought his hands up to her face. He tilted her face up so he could look at her. He had dark hair that flowed and piercing blue eyes.

Somehow, this man had captured the attention she needed for the night. It was a quick chance to escape this shit hole Luca had threw her in. She could dig herself out.

It was the first time Lia kissed someone other than Luca. The kiss left her disgusted. She had an embarrassing coughing fit once they pulled away, which left upset the guy whose name she couldn’t remember. “Is there a problem?” he asked with his eyebrows lowered and eyes narrowed.

Sneakily taking shots with Adam at the table had really fucked her over now. Not to mention, she could only think about Luca in this moment. “It’s nothing, Luca! I-“

“Luca?!” he scoffed, quickly pulling his hands away from her body. “My fucking name is Jason!”

“Jason! I’m sorry! M-My brain is jumbled!” Her voice quivered even when trying to keep it stable, but she was a blubbering mess.

It’s not that Lia wanted to keep kissing Jason. He had fish lips and slobbered like a dog. She was desperate to fill that gaping hole Luca had left in her heart.

Jason got up from his spot on the floor, leaving her on the cold, hard floor. “Have a good night, Cornelia.” He stormed down the hallway while fuming, entering the gymnasium doors.

“Jason!” she yelled for him, but tears were already pouring from her eyes. Her makeup was already horrendously messed up, streaks of mascara streaming down her face as she became engulfed with her emotions. She grabbed her phone from the ground and immediately texted Adam.

I need to go home.

She wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand while sniffling. It did no use since they continued pouring out of her. “Fuck!” she said through sobs.

It didn’t take long for Adam to locate her, quickly rushing over to her and stooping down to her level. “What happened?” he asked, confusion in his eyes because of how hysterical she was. “Why are you all the way over here?”

She had no words she could spit out. Her brain was too jumbled, she was too emotional, and her heart was shattered. All she could say was, “Home. I want to go home!” She entirely broke down.

“Uh, yeah!” He looked around with a panicked expression, not fully knowing what to do. “Let me get Luca.”

“No!” She protested. “Please don’t!”

His expression went from panic to disappointment as the realization hit him. His brother was the reason. “Fuck,” he groaned. He got his phone out of his pocket and called him mom. “Mom? We have a situation… No, we’re safe! It’s just Luca and Lia… Okay, thank you!” He hung up the phone then grabbed Lia’s hand. “She’ll be here as soon as possible.”
