3 Private Companies That I Would Love To See Go Public… (but shouldn’t): Part I
From the first look at the title, you may ask: what benefit would you get from a company going public? The answer to that would be -
“I would buy a cr*p load of stocks from them.”
Heck, I would dump all my life savings into them; maybe even get a gold tooth, just to pluck it out, and personally mail it to the company to trade it in for stocks. (Sidetrack — Now, there’s a great idea for Apple’s Trade In: gold teeth. Boom. Chip shortage problem solved. You can thank me later, Apple.)
Now, I am not an expert in any of these industries. I am simply a customer/user (a bypasser if you will) that enjoys the products and innovations that these companies make. This is just an opinionated piece of article. So, without further ado, I’ll go straight into the list.

1. DYSON
The first response I get from people when I say this is, “What… The vacuum cleaner company??🤨”
Yeah… sort of. But to me, Dyson isn’t just a vacuum cleaner company. It is a hive of skilled engineers that innovate appliances to make them more reliable and convenient. What impresses me the most is that they focus on the products’ performance so much that they put a lot of effort into redesigning things that had already been invented and try to improve them with engineering. To me, they redefine innovation. I know it’s a bold statement, but it’s my opinion. So, :P
Sure, there are big famous companies like Goldstar or Three Stars that offer nice electronics. But personally, I actually want my vacuum cleaner to be equipped with 14 cyclone chambers, a hyperdymium motor, and 5 stage filtration system to suck in everything on my floor. They even have lasers that shoot out to reveal dust on the floor! Can I afford it? No. But I’d do anything to invest in Dyson because the company has a core value in offering high quality and reliable products, with every nook and cranny meticulously engineered to perform in its optimized state. Everything about the products: the design decisions, features, lab results are backed by science, not someone’s belief that customers need them.
Like, have you seen those Dyson hair curlers? Just go try it out, you’ll understand what I mean about excellence and quality.

2. QUANTIC DREAM
I don’t know much about Quantic Dream… only that they make incredible video games with breathtaking visuals, creative gameplay, and most importantly, engaging story. But I saw the potential of what the company could bring after my 3-day nonstop sitting with Detroit: Become Human. Hello, eye strain and constipation. (jk my eyes are fine)
To be honest, I only played Detroit once, which completely defeated the purpose of the game… But making my friends, even my mom, play the game and watching their own unique stories unfold was a new and surreal experience. It was like watching a movie at the cinema with them, but every time I go into the theater with a different person, the movie has alternate scenes. All the while, we still had the fun and suspense you get from controlling the characters and becoming them whilst playing the game. If you haven’t played it, I implore you to at least play through 3 scenes: the Negotiation scene, the Murder Investigation scene, and the Chase scene. The honorable mention being the Ship-Corridor-Duo-Massacre scene. If you know, you know. *smashes refrigerator*
Quantic Dream, at the moment, is a video game company. However, looking at their passion to create content with high quality graphics, captivating stories, and immersive gameplay, I can see them becoming an entertainment company, especially with everyone going crazy about the metaverse. You think Facebook’s Horizon Worlds is neat? Wait till you see what the future has for VR movies and games (I’m sure nausea will be taken care of by then). A VR game with a flexible plot timeline, that doesn’t constrain the player to a set of limited choices… Now, that’s what I call immersion, baby! *ptooey*

3. VALVE
Valve is the most interesting company that I have followed since elementary. Though a widely known fact, many people forget Valve is different from other video game companies because it is an amalgamation of (1) a video game company, (2) a digital distribution/platform service (which in turn makes it a Big Data company), (3) software company, (4) and a hardware company. As a result, to understand more about Valve, we have to look at what kind of products they offer.
Game + Software
Valve, as its website domain name suggests, is a software company. Looking at its M.O., Valve usually releases games to showcase their software that change the gaming industry forever. For instance, Half Life was the first game to ever have a well thought-out, sequenced cinematics, bolstered by its sturdy AI. Though it may not seem like a big deal, this was groundbreaking back then, eventually setting standards for the gaming industry. Next, Portal, Portal 2 and Half Life 2 was introduced to not only show its incredible storytelling and expandable universe, but also to show off Valve’s incredible physics engine.
Hardware
Similar to the other games, Half Life: Alyx was essentially introduced to show off their new VR headsets (if you count HTC Vive, too). I’m not completely sure on this, however, my best guess is that Valve was actually planning to release the game around the same time the headsets were announced. But you know Valve… they rarely deliver things on deadline. Which actually reinforces my point. The games they develop aren’t their highest priority. They are all swamped with other projects, probably. Like why would you waste time on games, when all the cash is flowing in from Steam?
Be that as it may, Valve is stepping up a notch in the hardware industry, as they are going to release a handheld console. This is expected to change where and how people are going to play games, how people are going to purchase games, etc. Who knows in the future Valve’s new console might allow people to share games by Steam-dropping them, or allow people to play full VR games in the bathroom. Not necessary, but still cool. At least, that’ll solve the constipation problem. Just saying…
Digital Distribution/Platform Service
Steam, also revolutionized the gaming industry, because it changed how game developers and gamers interacted. To be more specific, (1) it offered digital transaction for purchasing games. This not only made it faster and more convenient to buy games, but also (2) laid a foundation for a platform where developers and gamers can communicate by allowing one to update the progress of the game development, and the other to give direct feedback about the games. Furthermore, it (3) offered a place for gamers to also share their gaming experience with other people as well.
Granted, all the individual points that are mentioned above were not new, but Valve was the first to successfully offer all 3 features at once in a large scale.
Regardless of whether you agree with me or not, we can’t deny that Steam is more than just a digital distribution service. Having amassed a large user base, it can also be seen as a Big Data company. In fact, it now handles all sorts of information about all the users, ranging from their personal data to game preferences. Think of it as Netflix for games. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were to eventually become a production company. It would certainly be a good place for having video game adaptions. An official Half Life series would be cool. (Valve, please…)

Dyson has launched its latest cord-free vacuum cleaner in India, namely the Dyson V12 Detect Slim. The new vacuum cleaner comes with laser detection technology and has a Hyperdymium motor from the company which generates up to 150 air watts of suction.

Expanding its range of vacuum cleaners in India, British technology company Dyson on Monday launched the Omni-glide cordless vacuum cleaner priced at Rs 34,900. Like the company’s flagship V11 Absolute Pro vacuum cleaner, the Dyson Omni-glide has an in-line design, with the separation system, the motor, filter and handle all aligned. However, the Omni-glide is the first Dyson vacuum cleaner to feature an omni-directional cleaner head that glides in all directions – forwards, backwards, and sideways.
“We are pioneers in the vacuum cleaner industry – we created our cyclone technology, removed the bag, and cut the cord with the introduction of our powerful cordfree machines. Today, we’re introducing a brand new way to clean hard floors with the Dyson Omni-glide vacuum,” James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer, Dyson said in a statement. He added, “Dyson’s new omnidirectional Fluffy cleaner head is a true testament to our engineering capabilities, and is powered by a Dyson Hyperdymium motor, and features two counter-rotating brush bars that spin at the same speed for pick up in both directions.”
The Dyson Omni-glide has an omnidirectional cleaner head, which floats on four 360-degree stabilising castors that allow it to move in all directions and into tight spaces. According to Dyson, the castors height and placement were engineered to ensure minimal resistance – whether rolling forwards, backwards or sideways. The Dyson Omni-glide has sealed ball bearings for a smooth change of direction and minimise build-up of dirt.
The Dyson Omni-glide vacuum cleaner comes with three tools – mini motorised tool to tackle hair and ground-in dirt, a worktop tool and a combination tool.

#PHnews: Dyson investing in software lab, R & D center in PH
MANILA – Dyson Ltd. has chosen the Philippines to host its first software laboratory and research and development (R&D) center, the British technology firm announced.
In a press briefing Thursday, Dyson chief operating officer Scott Maguire said the company’s upcoming software lab in the Philippines is part of the GBP2.75-billion (PHP117 billion) global investment of Dyson for the next five years.
“What we are looking to do is not only invent new hardware technologies, but we are looking to invest new products that solve new problems much more intelligently in the future as well… And the Philippines is going to be a much bigger part of our future,” said Maguire.
He added that the company will be hiring around 400 engineers for the software lab here for the next three years.
“We are confident that there’s a lot of good talent in the Philippines,” the Dyson executive said.
The software lab and R&D center will soon rise in Alabang, he added.

Maguire noted that Dyson has chosen the Philippines as a location for its new software lab and R&D center due to the success of its manufacturing plant as well as the country’s value for engineering.
He said the company has a software presence in United Kingdom, Singapore, China, and some capabilities in Malaysia, but the Philippines “will be the first software lab, R&D center for Dyson”.
Maguire cited R&D activities in the software lab here, which include reinventing of hardware and software technologies for vacuum cleaners, environmental care products, sensor software, motor controllers, Internet-of-Things, and robotic technologies for new products and categories that Dyson will be launching in the future.
Dyson has been in the Philippines since 2016, with its manufacturing plant in Calamba, Laguna that produces almost 13 million Dyson Hyperdymium motors annually.
“I think another role that the Philippine R&D center team will be playing is very close collaboration with all the other development centers Dyson has across the globe… [T]hat would help bring and elevate Filipino talents to a new level with the right exposure to the right technologies,” Dyson Philippines general manager Richard Perez said in a virtual briefing.
