The Playstation 3 E3 prototype (2005)

Sony first officially announced the PlayStation 3 at E3 2005, which took place May 18-20, 2005 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The console was also unveiled with a boomerang shaped controller which was speculated to be discontinued due to the public disapproving of its bold aesthetics despite its exceptional ergonomics. 🪃

Composer David Wise, known for his Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country 2 soundtracks, was tasked with creating a new soundtrack for the GBA rerelease of Donkey Kong Country 3 (the original SNES version’s soundtrack only partially having been written by him). In addition to the soundtrack that can be heard in-game, he created high-quality remixes to be used in promotional material like E3 2005 footage, trailers, and commercials; however, for an unknown reason, none of the remixes were actually used.

Years later, David Wise released the remixes himself on his personal site. This is the promotional high-quality remix of “Arich Boss”, the theme used for the Arich and Kroctopus boss battles.

It is super hard to hear (or see) what is going on in the video. There are a handful of images of his event, but today I found out something rather peculiar. You see, according to Hunicke's blog:

YEAH. The Prince isn't only dancing with the women, but is getting the audience to yell so they can vote for the most attractive woman!? I know gaming conventions and booth babes can be wild, but you wouldn't think about that with the Prince, of all characters (Unless if you are the King in the Virgo stage).

I can't tell if the context makes this image even worse.

I guess this is what the King wanted: The Prince to be popular with the girls

Giant Enemy Crabgot is the best skin you can run on the champion

Giant Enemy Crabgot is technically a meme skin. It comes from an awkward Sony E3 conference presentation in 2013 (actually 2005, oops!) which, like most jokes that are almost a decade old, simply aren't worth explaining.

The original Giant Enemy Crabgot splash and design then piled on top the meme visual references to classic 50s monster B-movies, complete with a screaming interchangeable white woman slung over his shoulders, which... if you know the history of why so many 50s movie monsters loved abducting white women is... maybe a bit of an oopsie.

So enter his full visual update and the skins team decide to go absolutely fucking beast mode and replace all the dated memes and problematic 1950s monster tropes with a Pacific Rim and anime sleek interpretation of classic kaiju monster designs, turning Giant Enemy Crabgot from a bit of a cringey embarrassment, if we're honest, into straight up the best skin you can run on the character.
