Watched a great talk today about web/technology accessibility, and the speaker pointed out that yes, accessibility is important for people with permanent disabilities, and we should definitely care about that. But also accessibility helps EVERYBODY, because everybody will, at some point in their lives, find themselves in situations that accessible technology can help with. Here are permanent, temporary, and situational disabilities that accessible technology can help with:
Tumblr media
Remember that whether something is disabling or not depends on the situation, the environment, the technology, etc. We’re ALL disabled at some point. It is important to support permanently disabled people, but it is also important to remember that accessibility helps us all!

Image:
 A cartoon in two panels.
Panel 1: A shaded brick wall with a circular hole in it.  Three shapes, a purple pentagon, a green trapezium, and a yellow triangle are looking at the hole with confused, sad, frustrated expressions.
A voice is coming though the hole:"I don't know what you guys are complaining about ...
"Panel 2:  The brighter, sunnier side of the wall.
A lilac circle - looking very self-satisfied as the other shapes peer through the hole - says"If you want to make it through, just be yourself!"
Commentary text beneath the image:
Canikon-Bokeh "Exactly"
sonic-hip-attack  'Imagine a wall full of circular holes, that circles can keep walking in and out of with no difficulty.
'Now imagine that the triangles manage to get the resources together, after years of not being able to fit through the circle's holes,
to drill a single triangle space into the wall.
Now imagine that the circle who previously supported the triangle's efforts because they are well-rounded (har) and value equality comes along and sees the construction project.
But instead of being happy, they get angry '"Well, I won't be able to fit through your hole!!!! the circle cries.'"I helped you get the drill!!!!" the circle shrieks.'"Make it fit me too!!!!" the circle demands.
'The triangles, barely holding it together enough to get a triangle hole together stare at the circle in confusion.
'"You have all the holes you need," the triangles explain.
This is for us.
You don't need to fit through our hole, too."
'"YOU'RE BEING UNEQUAL AND HURTING MY FEELINGS!"
the circle wails, "I DON'T SUPPORT YOUR HOLE IF IT DOESN'T FIT ME TOO GIVE ME MY DRILL BACK."'
"It's not your drill, it's our drill. You helped us get it because you said you cared."'
"I ONLY CARED WHEN I THOUGHT YOU'D MAKE A HOLE EVERYONE COULD FIT THROUGH, YOU'RE PERPETUATING INEQUALITY!!"
'"Why is it up to us, the small group that has never been able to fit through the wall at all, to make a hole everyone can use?
Why isn't it up to you, the people who have been able to cross back and forth at will for years? We just want to see the other side, why are you yelling at us?"
'"I DIDN'T ASK TO BE BORN A CIRCLE OMG, I'VE HAD TO WORK HARD ALL MY LIFE TOO. YOU'RE JUST BEING BIGOTED AGAINST ME BECAUSE OF SOMETHING I CAN'T CONTROL JUST LIKE EVERYONE IS AGAINST YOU."'
"You are interfering with our project and asking us to comfort you while we're trying to make progress. Please leave."'
"I'm going to tell everyone about this," the circle warns.
"Nobody will support you now"'
"Apparently nobody ever did," the triangles sigh, getting back to work.'
SetFabulazersToMaximumCaptain'
It's kind of sad.'That we have to draw comics using colorful shapes 'To explain systematic inequality to people.

TIL that UK Labour law is so anti Union that according to this Variety article, in general you will have to continue to work on projects under Equity* contract even if you're a SAG-AFTRA member otherwise you can face consequences such as dismissal or even being sued for breach of contract.
I'm sharing this in case there are questions about why this or that actor seems to continue to work during the strike. We don't know their contract and if it's Equity instead of SAG, they're not scabbing. It's not their fault, it's the fault of the studios in the US and the government in the UK.
*Equity is the UK version of SAG-AFTRA

Am I a radical because I think people should be paid fairly? Am I a radical because I think Heathcare is a right ? Am I a radical because I think the unhoused are from a failure by the state to provide them housing and support?
Am I a radical because I think all people should be treated equally?
Am I a radical because I realize equality don't mean the same thing for everyone, it means giving people what they need to be on the same level?
Am I a radical because I think that food and drink are a right?
Am I a radical because I want peace?
Am I a radical because jobs should be what you love, not what you are forced to do?
Am I a radical because I think colonization is bad?
Am I a radical because I don't ignore the benefits I have had from being a White, Straight, Male?
Am I a radical because I don't ignore the benefit I have the totalitarian policies of the US in relation to the world?
Am I a radical for speaking up against the horrors of capitalism?
Am I a radical for thinking that a single country should not determine the worlds safety?
Am I a radical for think war is bad?
Am I a radical for thinking civilians shouldn't be killed?
If that's what defines a radical, then that's what I am. And I'm proud to be one.

How do we not know about these things until after the fact. The Republicans are light years ahead of us in organization, messaging, opposition research, etc.
It’s not enough just to defeat Trump. We need to take back the Senate, the House of Representatives, clear the fascists from the SCOTUS, and take back the state legislatures.
This is a war and we can not be divided. We must stick together and defeat this Republican scourge begore they take away the right to vote and protest.
Your very existence depends on voting and defeating every Republican candidate on the 2024 ballot.

So Australia just voted no to enshrining a voice for indigenous Australians into our constitution. This voice was to be an advisory body with no real legal power over policy. And yet, despite the history of absolute HORRID treatment of Aboriginal Australians (attempted genocide) and the MULTITUDE of issues they continue to face as a marginalised group in our society, WE STILL SAID NO.
I am sitting in my kitchen sobbing. I am grieving for indigenous Australians, who I am sure will suffer greatly as a result of this. I am grieving for the complete backwards step we have taken. I am grieving for the fact that we live in a world where people are so selfish and ignorant that they can't think of the needs of others for the sake of equity.
If we cannot look out for each other, especially when it comes at absolutely no cost to ourselves, what hope do we have?

Representation is more important than ever, especially for the kids who are most marginalized.
Digital illustration of an older Latina teacher wearing an apple print dress. She’s standing in front of a blackboard that says, ‘inclusive curriculums benefit all students.’ There’s a variety of items around the image, including a pride flag, Black lives matter sign, globe, and plant.
