2023 Big Sugar Gravel Recap

Big Sugar Gravel in Bentonville, Arkansas has been staking its claim as one of the best gravel races in the country, and for good reason. The race features a challenging course, a welcoming community and a fun, festive atmosphere. It also serves as the grand finale of the Life Time Gran Prix series, and it’s where competitors raced last weekend for their chance to earn some of the $250K offered in prize money. Bikeflights’ own Kerry Werner and Michael Potter were onsite to enjoy both the expo and the race.

In Northwest Arkansas, biking is becoming ever more popular, and the cycling-centric town of Bentonville has been forging the way. Increased rider access to trails, sidewalks and bike lanes are benefitting residents and attracting like-minded visitors. Among the many events in the area, Big Sugar Gravel showcases the growth of the community through its gravel roads and city square.

Expo on Thursday and Friday kicked off the weekend. Held downtown on streets closed to vehicular traffic, the expo gave cycling and local brands the opportunity to connect with the riders roaming the streets and picking up their race numbers.

Bikeflights was one of the many brands that set up. We showed off our Bike Box Large (BBL) and talked with those interested in shipping their bikes. A great thing about the BBL is that you can use it to ship your gravel bike or your mountain bike.

Big Sugar Gravel’s course is famous for its sharp, chunky gravel. The undulating limestone terrain makes for an especially challenging 104-mile loop. Flat tires and leg cramps commonly impact the results in big ways.

The men’s race was decided in a four-rider sprint with an underdog winner. Torbjorn Andre Røed claimed victory against Brendan Johnston, Bikeflights Ambassador Alexey Vermeulen and Keegan Swenson. It was an especially tight race with the top 10 men all finishing within nearly one minute of each other.

Kerry fought his way to 21st overall after an early crash and a hard chase.

The women’s race unfolded quite differently as the freshly crowned Gravel World Champion Kasia Niewiadoma soloed for nearly 50 miles to claim her first victory wearing the iconic rainbow bands. Lauren De Crescenzo and Anna Hicks completed the podium in second and third place, respectively.

Big Sugar Gravel was the seventh and final event in the Life Time Grand Prix series, which included a field of 70 athletes, 35 women and 35 men, competing for a $250,000 prize purse. Keegan Swenson and Sofia Gomez-Villafane earned the overall titles and the year’s largest gravel payout. Bikeflights Ambassadors Haley Smith and Alexey Vermeulen both found themselves in the money with third and second-place finishes. Special shoutouts go to Starla Teddergreen, Kyle Trudeau, Andrew L'Esperance, Kerry Werner and Eric Brunner for competing in the series and finishing their seasons strong.

We had a great time in Bentonville and are already looking forward to returning again next year although we’re also already struggling with the decision of whether to ship our gravel or mountain bikes. Might be best to plan for both!

November 13, 2022: University of Virginia lost 3 Young Men, Football Players they were Shot and Murdered on Campus. The last 24 hours have felt like a nightmare for UVA the entire Football Team and Campus.

D’Sean Perry: Perry was “very, very artistic, could draw, could shape pots with clay, loved music, very cultured and well-rounded. Just a great teammate and had a sense of humor that was one of a kind that only D’Sean could have.”  Elliott

Devin Chandler: “Devin was what you wanted in a young person that’s at this level but he was just a big kid. The thing I remember about him is he always brought a smile to my face, because he just was happy with where he was, comfortable in his skin, and had a very bubbly personality.”  Elliott

Lavel Davis Jr: “Big smile, lights up the room, and most people would say because he’s the tallest guy in the room but just his presence, he’s got a gentleness about him, but he’s passionate about what he believes in,” Elliott

Mike Hollins Jr. is 1 of the wounded and is intubated, but in stable condition. “We’re lucky Michael was spared but we’re still grieving for the three families that cannot say the same. Our heart aches for them. That was my brother’s brothers.”  Ebony Hollins-Allen, Mike Jr’s Sister

The other man wounded was discharged from UVA Medical Center, but currently his name and condition is not being released. per Eric Swenson, UVA Health Spokesperson 

After the Shooting christopher darnell jones jr., the killer ran prompting an hours long manhunt as Students went into lock down in dorms, classrooms and libraries

November 15, 2022: jones jr. was arrested. At this this time he has not given a motive and Police have not found one

“In the course of their investigation, University officials spoke with jones’ roommate, who gave no indication of the presence of any weapons.” However they “did discovere in 2021 jones was tried and convicted of a misdemeanor concealed weapons violation, he received a 12-month suspended sentence and a small fine.” Coy, UVA  

Throughout the investigation “Mr. Jones repeatedly refused to cooperate with University Officials who were seeking additional information about the claims he had a firearm and about his failure to disclose the previous misdemeanor conviction.” Coy, UVA

The killings are among at least 68 shootings so far in 2022 at US School, including 15 on College Campuses and is among some 600 US Mass Shootings so far in 2022, in which at least 4 People were shot

in a mind-blowingly shocking twist, deadpool is y’all’s favorite pansexual lmao

there were some recurring themes in the reasons y’all love these characters; y’all like the characters themselves and them being pan is secondary. they were the first pan/queer characters y'all saw. the characters are authentic, relatable, interesting, or amusing. they have chaotic or bad bitch energy. they’re open or casual about their pansexuality/queerness. they have a strong sense of who they are and are unapologetic about it. and they make y'all feel seen/valid or have helped y'all accept being pan/queer.

(my favorite response was the one that just said "i love bastards" because honestly same)

but this kind of made me realize how pansexual characters seem to have similar traits. whether they’re the literal devil, a superhero, or a normal person, they tend to really know who they are, which is often unique or quirky or badass, and never waver in or apologize for it. which is cool. we don’t get many pansexual characters, but the ones we have are kind of awesome.

This show had a lot of random bloopers - Stephanie dropped a cherry and a banana, Ashley dropped one of her wooden spoons in front of the diner counter right before the drumline, and Olivia didn't have her stethoscope during the heartbeat scene so they had to mime it. Probably the only blooper you can hear is that Nik fell at the end of Never Getting Rid Of Me; he had to repeat the last line so he could get up and jump into the chair. Then he ad libbed about falling a few times in the following scene. She Used To Be Mine was unreal. She had to stop before the last verse for applause.

Another warm up sketch of DC’s latinx and hispanic heroes and antiheroes, and this time with a very well known fella: BANE.

Yes, Bane. We all know his deal: the son of the supervillain King Snake, who spent his whole life in prison in his home island of Santa Prisca (a fake South American nation) paying for the crimes his father commited in the prison of Peña Duro. It was there that he received a formation and education that paralleled Batman’s in terms of classic education, meditation, built his physique, learned multiple languages, etc, all while hearing tales about Batman, which he believed was a personification of a bat that once attacked him as a child, and that gave him a fear for bats. It was also there that he became addicted to the super drug Venom, after being forced to become a test subject for it.

Then came “Knightfall” (the famous story where he broke Batman’s back) and he instantly became an iconic villain, followed by appearances in other media, which led him to become a household name.

But it was years after that, in Gail Simone’s Secret Six run, that -at least while that book lasted-, that Bane became an antihero. I mean, he was still a villain (like all the characters in that book), but he had a new sense of purpose, a new found family, and even if his actions weren’t always good or the right ones, there was this wicked sense of nobility, sometimes of using any means to justify the end, all of which makes him an antihero in my book.

Of course, that stage in Bane’s life (the best one IMO) lasted as long as that book. When the New 52 reboot came, Bane reversed to being a classic and prominent villain, that somehow has had like, 3 or more stories about taking over Gotham in the last 10 years, so yeah.

Also, I want to point out the fact that even though he’s one of DC’s most prominent latinx characters, he’s never been played in live action by a latinx actor: He was played by wrestler Robert Swenson and by Michael Reid MacKay in Batman & Robin (where he was given the name Antonio Diego), he was also played by Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises, and by Shane West in Gotham (which weirdly, it wasn’t actually Bane, but his father King Snake).

In other media, the story has been more favorable, since there are latinx actors like Henry Silva (DCAU), Héctor Elizondo (Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman), Danny Trejo (Young Justice), Carlos Alazraqui (Justice League: Doom) and Eric Lopez (Young Justice: Legacy), but they’re actually the minority, since he’s mostly been played also by white or non-latinx or hispanic actors.

Nicely captured with just a few quick dropouts and no major blackouts. There is one head on the left that can occasionally be seen, but it never blocks the action. There is some slight washout in some of the wider shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. 2023 Leadville Trail 100 MTB Recap

Leadville, Colorado once again hosted the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race this past weekend. Riders from around the world gathered to take on the challenging course, pushing their physical and mental limits to complete the grueling 104-mile route high in the Rocky Mountains. Bikeflights’ team members Justin Barr and Kerry Werner and several Bikeflights Ambassadors were on site to take in the thin air, work the expo and ride.

The festivities started with the Race Across the Sky expo in downtown Leadville. Industry brands, including Bikeflights, set up their tents and displays to connect with riders. Despite a little rain, the energy was high at the venue among riders and vendors who were eager for race day.

A bucket list event for many riders, the Leadville Trail 100 MTB features a course that is renowned for its unforgiving climbs, fast descents and breathtaking vistas. From the lung-busting ascent of Columbine Mine to the heart-pounding descent through Powerline, each section of the course poses its own unique challenge. 

Traditionally, finishers earn coveted belt buckles based on their finishing times. While some riders’ goal is just to finish before the 12-hour cutoff time to receive a small belt buckle, others aim for finishing in less than nine hours to earn a big belt buckle.

Doubling as the fourth stop along the Life Time Grand Prix series, this year’s race drew the fastest field ever, and the overall winner Keegan Swenson even went on to set a new course record by besting the previous time by nearly 15 minutes!

Among the Bikeflights’ Ambassadors in the race was Alexey Vermeulen, who had an amazing and hard-fought second-place overall result. Kyle Trudeau, Eric Brunner and Maxxis Factory Racing riders Haley Smith and Andrew L'Esperance all had incredible rides, too, improving on their Grand Prix overall ranking and earning big belt buckles in the process. 

Congratulations to all of the incredible riders who took to the start line. Whether you completed your goals or settled for redemption another year, we look forward to seeing you back in Leadville next year!
