One of Milwaukee’s best music venues, Cactus Club, was contacted by Live Nation, and as club owner Kelsey Kaufmann explains in this tiktok- harassed her about Milwaukee’s Deer District double venue complex planned to begin building in 2023, a project that she vocally does not support.

A rep from Live Nation, the $18+BIL company who also bought up a large portion of Madison’s music venues in 2018, and is, as you should remember, also the same company at the center of the Astroworld tragedy that killed 10- called Kelsey and became antagonistic when she was critical of the proposed double venue project across from one of Milwaukee’s other historic venues, Turner Hall.

Despite a growing movement against the project other venues formed a group called Save MKE’s Music Scene, which made a petition from Concerned Downtown Neighbors, and has nearly 10k signatures, the Milwaukee Common Council last week on October 25 voted to recommend zoning, so this project is all but inevitable- and is slated to open in early 2024. The Council will likely go forward with full approval tomorrow, November 1.

Besides building a new complex FPC Live/Live Nation/Ticketmaster are attempting to attain through hostile tactics a monopoly of Milwaukee’s music scene, as it did in Madison, and will continue here the company’s long history of labor violations, wage theft, and sheer incompetence culminating is dangerously unsafe environments that put their workers and audience lives at risk.

EDITORIAL

We were always just lurkers… But no more! We were always just lurkers… But no more!

We had been talking for a while about the Interactive Fiction community, and wondering what we could to do… you know, do our part to help it become its best self.

And out of all the things available out there, between the directories and the group chats, the forums and the discord servers… it can get pretty overwhelming to be part of it all, to keep track of everything. And we realised there wasn't really a newsletter for IF. Something that tracks of what is happening…

So why not just… make it happen?

Like a lot of things, What's New in IF started on a whim. But we hope we can turn it into something great. Something that can help the community keep track of what's happening.

You can now register for the Narrascope! It is happening June 21-23, in hybrid. They've also released the schedule of talks!

The Interactive Narrative Exhibition is looking for IF pieces to be displayed in a Museum in Poland!

Until mid-May, the Spring Thing is welcoming players to check out the entries vote for the “Best in Show”!

Do you speak German? The annual Grand Prix has released its submissions and is looking for voters!

The Dialogue Jam by the @neointeractives group is open for submission until the end of the month. Only Dialogue is allowed!

In less than two weeks, the window to submit for the Text Adventure Literacy Jam 2024 will end. The goal is to make a parser for beginner players.

Also ending at the end of the month is the Amare Games Festival 2024, which is all about love!

On the Choice of Game Forum, the Diversity Jam is running. They accept any CScript game… as long at is not in ENGLISH!

After months of hiatus, the 79th edition of the Bitsy Jam finished recently. The theme was: long distances.

An emotional visual novel about being a struggling indie dev game developer and depiction of suicide in narrative games. It is very short and hits hard.

Eat Me by Chandler Groover (Inform)

It was weird, it was gross… It's just genius. There's no way to describe how insane this game is. Maybe the most disturbing escape game ever made. No wonder it's so highly rated and won awards… TG for walkthroughs!

We... don't really know what we're doing.

Yes, it's true! Not a lot of thought process went into making this. We actually started putting this together at 3-4am after making the Tumblr Blog.

We haven't really made any plan on what should or should not be included in this zine. We just knew we wished we had something like this when we started.

So while it may seem bare right now, we hope, in time, to fill all the pages, and even add more, as we find more projects, and events, and other IF- related stuff to share!

But for that…

"hurry up, will you?" dahlia's friend, violette sighed from the door of their dorm. it was opening at conte forum, and somehow dahlia's friend group had convinced her to go to the game.

"vi, the game starts in an hour, calm down. we have plenty of time."

"plenty of time? girl, everyone and their moms are trying to go to this game. apparently the team this year is gonna be really good."

"people have been saying this every year forever now, and they haven't won for like ten years or something."

"but this year is gonna be different, trust me. they got all these players coming, cute players." violette said, wiggling her eyebrows at her best friend. dahlia's eyes rolled to the back of her head. the last thing that was on her mind right now was boys, cute or not, it didn't matter. she was finally in college, ready to have the best four years of her lives, and she was not going to let some douchebag hockey player ruin that for her.

"i don't care if they're cute or not, vi. athletes are assholes, and you know that." the monroe girl said, referring to their junior year of high school when violette got her heart broken by a basketball player, and then a soccer player. it was a though year.

"doesn't mean you can't enjoy looking at them. i got us seats right behind their bench to!" the girl squealed as the two exited their dorm room.

when they got to the forum, there was an extremely long line to get in. violette had been coming to games her whole life with her dad, and she had never seen one this long before.

"jeez, all this just to watch sweaty man run after a rubber disk..." dahlia whispered as the two waited in line.

"hot sweaty man, they're skating and it's called a puck."

"that's in a shape of a disk and made of rubber."

soon enough, the two girls made it in, with twenty minutes to spare before the start. warmups were almost done when the two girls got to their seats. there was only a handful of players on the other team still on the ice, and about ten eagles.

"why're they just standing there and talking? are they gossiping?" dahlia gasped, confused as to why a trio of eagles were just standing at the blue line across from them.

"i dunno, maybe." her best friend shrugged, not really paying attention to them. but for some reason, dahlia's eyes stayed glued to them. they were laughing and shoving each other a bit, each playing with a puck. as the clock neared the last minute of warm ups, the boys slowly started making their way to their changing room.

as they approached the bench, dahlia made eye contact with one of them. he had blonde hair poking out the side of his helmet and a wide smile on his face as he laughed. the girl hated to admit it, but he looked good. his smile was truly beautiful and contagious.

the two held eye contact until the boy disappeared past her vision. their eye contact didn't go unnoticed from her best friend, nor his friends.

"girl, what was that?" violette asked with a smirk on her face. dahlia's cheeks during a deep shade of red, her eyes looking down at her lap.

"what're you talking about?"

"don't act stupid, you know exactly what i'm talking. that little eye contact you just with will fucking smith."

"who?"

"will smith, pretty much everyone knows who he is. well expect you of course." violette teased, making dahlia roll her eyes slightly.

"whatever. it lasted like two seconds-"

"more like ten. a little more and his head was about to leave his body so he could keep staring at you."

"you're being dramatic, vi."

"i can hear the wedding bells already." violette giggle, making her best friend slightly shove her. the two didn't talk about it for the rest of night, but violette biting her tongue every time will came back to the bench and stared at her best friend.

all though dahlia would never admit it, the boy caught her attention. his soft smile, his little blond curls, and his intoxicating laugh that could be heard every once in a while. every time he was on the ice, her eyes would always move towards him, even if he didn't have the puck. there was just something about him that drew her towards him, and she hated it.

the eagles ended up winning 4-2 against long island, will getting an assist on the game winning goal. the boy wasn't shy to send a small wink towards the girl right before he disappeared for the last time down the tunnel.

dahlia hated how she could feel her cheeks burning, not even wanting to know how red she was. violette couldn't help but laugh when she saw the look on her best friend's face. her eyes wide with a shy smile.

"girl, what do you have to say now?"

"shut up." dahlia mumbled, her cheeks turning even a deeper shade of red, something the girl couldn't think was possible. the girl waisted no time getting up from her seat and leaving the forum, violette hot on her trail.

the black hair girl seemed to only have one thing to talk about on their way home. will smith. dahlia had never wanted to duck tape someone's mouth shut so badly before. sure the two made eye contact and exchanged smiled lots of times during their game, but it didn't mean anything. dahlia was going to wake up the same person she was this morning, and she would probably never even see him around campus.

violette wasn't the only who noticed all the same looks shared between the two 18 years old. will's linemates were quick to jump on his back when they got back to the locker.

"well that was fun." one of the senior said as everyone started undressing from their equipment, the celebrations done with.

"smitty had a lot of fun, that's for sure." ryan laughed from across the room, making the centerman look at him with confused eyes.

"what do you mean?" will asked in a confused voice. gabe started chuckling as everyone else was just as confused as the boy in question.

"we saw those little looks, buddy."

"what looks?" one of the sophomore asked.

"willy's got a little girlfriend." gabe said, looking at ryan as the two started laughing. the two boys couldn't contain their laughter as will's cheek turned a deep shade of pink, making others in the room start laughing as well.

"shut up."

"don't worry, bud, she was staring at you just as much." ryan added through his laughter.

it was safe to say that will had never gotten undressed and showered so quickly before. it was like all his teammates could talk about was this mystery girl who's name he didn't even know. he was tucked into bed far before gabe had even started making his way home.

"i have french with her friend. i could try to hook you guys up if you want." gabe said once he had made it into his bed and hour after his roommate.

"don't. you guys are making this such a big deal when it really isn't. we made eye contact a couple of times, that's all. i don't even know her name." will mumbled as he turned on his side, facing the wall.

"whatever you want, man. you guys would look good together, just so you know."

the room was silent after that, neither of the two boys saying anything, and slowly drifting off to sleep. meanwhile, across campus, dahlia was laying in her bed, her eyes wide open as the night replayed in her head over and over again.

the boy intrigued her, there was no denying that, but the chances of them ever seeing each other again were slim to none. and there was no way she was going to another hockey game just to see him, it was one of the most boring she had ever watched.

at least that's what she kept telling herself...

Chapter 6 Part 1 Public Update 🎉

First of all: Happy Eid-ul-Fitr for those who celebrate it! I hope all of you have a good day so far!

Now, on to the Chapter Update! Chapter 6 Part 1 is 38.4K words long, which brings the total word count for the demo so far to 272.8K words!

This chapter was first planned to be only around 20K to 25K words long, but the amount of variations in this chapter is insane! But, at the same time, I'm pretty excited for you guys to finally see how the group will interact with each other for the first time!

Walking I got he old man’s office, Josè already knew what he was going to bargain for. After years of trying and never being able to achieve his ideal body type, he had resulted to drastic measures. Measures that led him to the old abandoned looking store in the back ally of this run down city. He was surprised when the ancient man behind the counter looked up at him and grinned. All Josè had to do was tell the old man his desire and next thing he knew a cold wind blew through the store while old man cackled. Josè was pushed from the store by a invisible force and right before him the door of the shop disappeared as if it had never been there. Leaving him to wonder if after all this time his searches were for nothing.

Turned away from the alley he began to walk back to his car. Another loss in his search for the ideal body he was trying to achieve.

Back in his apartment he skimmed through online forums trying to find something else that could work to help him get what he wanted. He was at a loss. He was willing to do anything to get the ideal body he wanted. Thinking back to his encounter with the old man he was sure that his request “make me bulking bear of a man!” Would have interested the old man but it seemed as though he was mistaken. He slammed the laptop he was searching the internet on and got in bed. Disappointed with the way his day has ended.

During the night tho he began to change. His skin began to take on a brown hugh. He tossed and turned not even aware that his body was changing while he slept. A thick beard quickly grew on his face while it looked as tho a carpet of thick dark hair began to push out of his skin. His nose rounded out as his cheek bones pushed out. Changing the shape of his face while his eyes became a little smaller. His feet thickened and lengthened. Stretching from an 11 to size 16 wide. His feet poked out from the bottom of his covers as he got taller growing from 5’10” to 6’3”. When he woke up the next morning, He was unrecognizable.

Letting out a loud yawn he noticed instantly that his voice was much deeper than it ever was before. His eyes shot open and he propped himself up. Seeing hairy feet poking out of the bottom the blanket he yanked the blanket off his body. Yelping at the hairy tanned body that was under his control. He took time getting ready. Exploring every inch of his body. The hairiness, the bigger feet, and even the bigger package that made him reposition himself. Sitting now with his legs spread eagle so he didn’t crush his new package. Going to the bathroom he took a picture and couldn’t help but smile. Finally having what he wanted.

He went out and for the first time in his life he was happy with himself. Confident in how he looked. Men would stop and. Hawk at him as he was the epitome of a hairy Hispanic daddy bear now. At the gym he couldn’t help but take a picture of himself. Posing while he felt the sweat drip down his hairy body after his first workout in his new body.

He was amazed at the strength he now possessed. He did t think there anything he couldn’t do. He was on top of the world.

When he got back home, he sat down to relax on the couch while he wait for his food to arrive that he ordered. He was committed to keeping this body in tip too shape now that he finally had it and that meant continuing on with his very strict diet of rice and chicken. Which was cheap when he could order it from the Chinese restaurant down the road. When the door bell rang his plain rice and bland chicken was there. He sat to eat the whole time still trying to get used to new bulk he had wished onto himself. Then the smell hit him. At first he thought something was rotting but soon was horrified to find it was his own breathe. Almost like he had halitosis. I. The bathroom he quickly brushed his teeth to get himself his horrible breath but didn’t do any good. It wasn’t long after that he smelled bo. Very pungent and enough to make his own nose burn. He jumped in the shower to wash the stink off. His own feet beginning to itch from the tangled hair and sweat that now adorned them. When he was done with his shower he had a few moments of freshness before the smell was back. Almost as if he never showered! What was worse was even though he has just dried himself off he could feel a heavy sweat droplet rubbing down his hairy back. Josè couldn’t make sense of what was happening. But it had to be worth it if it meant that he was going to be a like this. He loaded on the deodorant and popped some breathe mints. It was already much better than it was before. He just didn’t realize that with a body like this is meant new smells would come with it.

That might be tossed and turned some more in his bed. Just like the night before he was unaware that his body was still changing. Only this time all he did was sweat. The next morning he woke up he was in a puddle of sweat. His bed sounded like a wet spinach as the blankets and sheets stuck to his hairy body. The room smelt like a sauna only this was a permanent smell he would have to get use to.

Walking to the bathroom he thought he heard something. But he couldn’t make out the noise. In the bathroom he ran the water for his shower. Brushed his teeth and breathed into his hand. Yeah. Still horrible breathe. Popping some mints he got in the shower and did the same routine he did the night before. He felt so weird this morning though. He could feel his stomach gurgling. Like gas was building up inside. And when the water was shot off as if on command a loud fart escaped. When he got out of the shower he felt odd. The steam in the room was thick and hard to see. He wiped the mirror down and was scared at what he was seeing. The sound he heard. The gurgling sensation. It was all coming from his stomach. Which was slowly pushing outward.

He tried to suck his stomach in but found it impossible as it just kept pushing outward. Soon love handled formed and would hang over jock straps whenever he wore them.

His body continued to expand. His chest becoming heavy while his arms got even bigger. Soon his weight had had went from 175 to 250!

He didn’t know what to make of everything happened. His stomach was large and round now. Hard to touch. What little fat there was jiggled when he walked. This wasn’t what he wanted at all. He didn’t have anything that would fit him now. Everything would be skin tight or impossible to wear. He heard a wicked laugh laugh coming from the door way and looking over he seen the old man. “Get used to it. You’ve got some more weight to gain. You wanted to be a bear. So you’re going to be one”.

For all that I'm completely willing and supportive in letting people identify however they choose, there are some contexts where you can't self-ID completely freely. The types that inspired this? Religion, ethnicity, and politics.

Religion and ethnicity are fairly straightforward; in my context, I've seen so, so many people who think that they can "declare [themselves] to be Jewish" and are flabbergasted and in denial that it's not that simple. This also goes for any closed tribal group or identity, so I think that doesn't need much explanation.

But politics, I hear you ask? How can self-ID be a problem there?

Well, let me paint you a picture.

A number of years back, before Drump's election, I was active on the BoingBoing BBS, and there was an individual who went by Max_Blanke. Max claimed to be a political moderate, insisting on it again and again and again...

But every position he took was on the political right, very often the far-right. Police shooting a black man with his hands up? "Wait for the investigation, we don't have all of the information." Black Lives Matter protestors marching? They're nothing but potential rioters and an active threat to law and order. Muslim women being harassed and assaulted? False flag operation. Trump supporters being socially ostracized? They're clearly one step away from being rounded up and put into reeducation camps. Police officer with a Nazi tattoo on his arm? Oh, that's not exactly a Nazi eagle, it's different in a few tiny details. Republicans engaging in voter suppression? Don't we all know that the real threat is voter inflation and voter fraud?

And so forth.

It got to the point that it was pretty damn obvious that he was either A) a closeted fascist in denial, or B) a troll.

But he claimed, loudly and repeatedly, that he was a moderate, and that we were just bullying him, and so long as he kept his bigotry quiet and deniable, he was able to keep from being censured by the mods.

And this is a pattern I see again and again and again. Max was just one example (admittedly one that I took a lot of pleasure in ripping to pieces, calling out his fallacies and double standards, and showing his patterns of behavior to the rest of the forum, which is why he comes easily to mind); you will have people who claim to be socialists... but who regurgitate every right-wing culture war talking point. You will find people who claim to be progressive... but the actions and rules they want implemented would make society into a totalitarian surveillance state. Of course, there's the question of "Why is this important?"

Because end goals matter. This is not a matter of "my tribe wins"; these ideas will affect real people if and when they get implemented.

Interview with Niall Horan, ex frontman of One Direction

If the global success with One Direction is now far behind, the fortune that Niall Horan is enjoying as a solo artists is very current. His third album was just released. Emblematic title: The Show, and the show could not get better than this. Article by Leonardo Clausi

Precisely because this is the new age of anxiety (from the title of the poem by W. H. Auden The Age of Anxiety, 1947, and from Symphony n. 2 by Leonard Bernstein inspired by it, 1949), Public Health around the world should prescribe listening to Niall Horan. As anti-anxiety medicine, tonic for the psyche, emotionally restorative medicine. Really, who else in the modern soft rock world is as capable of tuning in for ten tracks on an equally balmy wavelength, without ever straying into drama or comedy, as Horan does on The Show, third album since he went solo after the dissolution of One Direction, the (boy)band who competed with the Beatles in music sales? Not even the much more wanted colleague Harry Styles, with his unapologetic Bowie-ism that annoyed Tony Visconti so much.

30-year-old Horan doesn't have the same ambitions. We could easily ask him to go and pick out our daughter from school because he is so.. fragrant? Since 2016 - without stopping except from when forced by the pandemic - he's been writing music and bringing it on tour. A constant motion of three albums, the feverish craftsmanship of a diligent entertainer devoted to the career that he was raised in thanks to the shortcut, sometimes a brutal one, with which talent shows have short-circuited the discography and industry of A&R (Artists and Repertoire). We intercept him as he drives, always busy as a bee. "I just came back from America yesterday. Today I am in Liverpool. It's constant travelling, I spend most of my time jetlagged". He is understandably satisfied with his latest discographic effort, which will become the center of the homonymous The Show Live on Tour, with the Italian stop on 21st March 2024 at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan: "I spent a lot of time writing and producing it during the pandemic and the year after. I’m happy, the response has been very, very interesting around the world". Not surprising, considering the melodic quality of the tracks, touched by the Californian light of the Laurel Canyon, with vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Beach Boys, and references to the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. "I trusted that I could write a song. I knew I had the ability to do it. I just needed to trust that I could get a guitar, or sit at a piano, and something good would come out of it. It's out, but you never know. I need to keep my head down, work hard and see".

The 70s were his first introduction to music through records (or vinyls, as hipsters say), which were floating around the house; the real love however started "when I realised how lucky I was to have grown up with music that stayed with me to this day. My parents had a large album collection. I still listen to a lot of them now. When I’m in the studio I often use analogue mixing desks, it’s an important part of the sound I’m looking for". Speaking of the search for the 'organic' sound that digital audio is not able to embody all the way, what does he think of artificial intelligence, now that creators in the entertainment industry are taking the streets as well to protest against forcibly becoming obsolete? "Artificial intelligence can really do a lot, but it can’t give you that feeling that I call the human touch. It couldn’t write 'Hey Jude' or any other masterpiece. Humans will always have the upper hand".

Horan's Irishness is a prominent element of his personality, that proud affability that made his country a cultural superpower despite its size. And that was worth the warm reception of none other than the POTUS, who is also a descendent of the Celtic diaspora. "For how small the nation is, the relevance we have worldwide is amazing. Only five million inhabitants, and yet our culture of drinking, night life, musical or literary traditions are known everywhere. It's something I always keep in mind and want to show off as much as possible. And yes, I was invited at Washington to meet Joe Biden". Understandably, the fact excites him: "It was crazy that someone from a small town like mine (Mullingar, northwest of Ireland, ed.) ended up playing for the President of the United States at the White House. I still can't believe it". Not to mention the fact that, from a particularly bigot and conservative society that it once was, Ireland is now one of the most advanced and liberal ones of the West. "I'm not sure how it happened, but I am very proud of it. It was great to see it become one of the first countries to have gay marriage, for example. And I’m proud that it’s acting as a catalyst for change in other countries".

And does he know U2, this compatriot up and coming group? Would he collaborate with them? "Some of my all time favourite songs are by U2, their shows are some of the best I’ve ever been to. It would be great to do something with them if they ever ask". Coming from one of the best selling bands meant that there was a challenging precedent to compete with. But Niall Horan is doing great. It's impossible to refrain from asking about a 1D reunion. "It’s a busy time for everyone, so no, not that I know of. We keep in touch but everyone’s doing their own thing. Louis is touring in America, Liam is working on his music, Harry’s busy on the biggest world tour... In fact, if you hear about a reunion, please let me know".

it took me a minute but I kind of like the iron giant style. it's simple and easy once you get the hang of it.

Anyways, meet Gage! He's an old character of mine that I still love. He's loud and confident and laughs a lot. Though not always the smartest, he loves helping and has put himself in charge of making sure everyone is safe and doing okay.

He lives in a world populated by extraordinary people, and is pretty low-ranking in power. He has eagle's wings (no flashy colors, patterns, or silent flight) and has only the strength of two men (he can lift 100lbs as if it were 50, which is still heavy.)

We had a roleplay on a chicken forum where Gage organized a group of "heroes" after being inspired by old, old comic books back from when most people were strictly human. We had over 20 people join and it was quite a lot of fun. They even saved the world at the end, but not without Gage's wings being turned to goop and rotting off :/

I think the the Satellite Music Video is a partial response to Question…? Here’s the timeline:

October 21st, 2022 - Taylor drops Midnights, and Question…? (with its OOTW sample) is track 7.

October 23rd - Harry starts his residency at the Kia Forum in LA, 15 nights between this date and Nov. 15th (including Harrywe’en) before concluding the NA leg of HSLOT and heading to LATAM.

November 2 - Harry begins to look unwell onstage.

November 4 - Harry has to reschedule a concert due to illness. Moves it to the 6th.

November 5,6,7 - concerts all rescheduled due to Harry’s illness.

Before November 15 - concerts are rescheduled for January 26, 27, and 29, 2023. Harry heads to LATAM.

January 26, 27, 29, 2023 - Harry plays rescheduled shows in LA

January 31 and February 1 - Harry plays 2 newly scheduled concerts in Palm Springs (the second on his 29th birthday).

February 5 - Grammy Awards in LA

February 11 - Brits in London

February 20 - Harry starts Australia/New Zealand/Asia leg in Perth, WA, Australia.

The video, which dropped May 3, 2023, starts with footage from a concert at the Forum.

It took place on January 27th, 2023. But here’s the thing: the earliest anyone knew about this concert (for MV planning purposes) was November 8, 2022. It would not have been possible without Harry’s illness and subsequent rescheduling. That is the very earliest possible date, and it’s 2.5 weeks AFTER Question…?

The video is sweet, sad, and full of Easter eggs. For example, it starts with a Brian Cox voice over talking about how Curiosity rover had spent “10 lonely years” roving the red planet (so January 2013 to January 2023).
