Survey card, Mount Wharton, near Accomack, Virginia. HABS data, Library of Congress (HABS VA,1-____,3-)
“Main house approx. 25 x 50 feet and has cellar.
So end gable at “A” of brick. this end in ruins July 1940.
Scalloped shingles on main house and so. wing.”
A little gem of a notecard, attached to the survey photos for Mount Wharton.
During the Great Depression, the US governmet hired people to go out into America and document old buildings.  This was the start of the Historic American Building Survey (HABS).  The LOC provides free access to this huge trove of photographs and survey reports.  Many of the buildings and landscapes documented therein no longer exist, or look totally different today.
The HABs photos, survey notes, and drawings have a certain spare elegance that I find striking.  Good enough for government work, I suppose.

Mount Wharton, near Accomack, Virginia. HABS photo, Library of Congress ( HABS VA,1-____,3--1)
Survey notes: “Main house approx. 25 x 50 feet and has cellar. South end gable…of brick. This end in ruins July 1940. Scalloped shingles on main hose and [south] wing.”
Later additions on early houses are quite common, and Eastern Shore houses often have “telescoping” series of added rooms, making the houses much longer than they are deep. Mount Wharton shows a good example of that trend. The addition likely represents one or more  18th or 19th century add-ons to the core 18th century building.  Note the exposed frame and rafters in the ruined section of the building and also the small outbuilding behind.
No longer extant, near as I can tell.

I took a walk like 2 weeks ago in the town to the north of me. I took 2 photos:

The fallout shelter sign was on the side of a bank.
The concrete mile marker was next to the old train tracks.

obviously i don’t disagree with those posts about getting your vaccine when you can, even if youre “cutting in line”, but it doesn’t make me any less annoyed about how people who have been putting my life and the lives of my coworkers at risk this entire pandemic are being vaccinated ahead of us just because they’re white, they have money, and/or they simply have the time.
i live in maryland, where the vaccine rollout has been described as “slow and inequitable”. my county, one of the most populous counties in my state, with the highest number of cases by far, was previously receiving only 4000 vaccines a week. as of the beginning of march, we had the lowest percentage of vaccinated people in the state (8%). our governor said it was because black people don’t want to get vaccinated, that the low rates of vaccination in my county are because poc are “refusing” to get vaccinated, and that majority black areas like pg county and baltimore city were getting more vaccines than they were entitled to.
thanks to volunteers (who had to cease operations because they were too overwhelmed), i was able to get vaccinated a few days ago. my coworkers signed up through this too, but only one of them was able to make their appointment because they all HAD TO WORK. here, your chances of getting an appointment at all are vanishingly slim. actually getting there requires either luck or flexibility that a lot of low income essential workers don’t have.
i’m not trying to guilt anyone. if you have the chance to get a vaccine, get a vaccine, but make no mistake that class and race are a feature in vaccination accessibility.
