Easy A - 2010

SAFE/Caution - A,V•

  • Aprox 56:20 •A,V• When Olive says we even have inside jokes, Marianne pretends to choke/g* and makes mild noises in disgust.

I just rewatched Easy A and I realized that there’s a huge plot hole in it. When the guidance counselor Mrs. Griffith and her student Micah pin the chlamydia scandal on Olive they miss one important thing! Emma Stone’s character (Olive) is underage in the movie. When Mrs.Griffith rationalizes her affair with Micah she continually says that her affair with him is legal because he is nearly 21. BUT…they fail to mention that in California it is considered statutory rape when a 20-21 year old has sex with a minor. Essentially… in their plan to avoid teacher/student sex scandal, they set Micah up to be potentially charged with statutory rape against Olive.

My point here is that if the school and local pastor had made the responsible legal decision about the false rumors then, the film would be telling an extremely different story. Additionally…if Olive’s parents had been highly religious instead of liberal then…they would have pressed charges on Micah for raping their underage daughter. It’s a bit horrific that the filmmakers thought it would be acceptable at the time to portray statutory rape as a “better alternative “ to a student/teacher affair!!

thought I made a post about this once but apparently I DIDN’T, anyway, in Easy A when Todd says “screw all of them” and Olive says “I already did” like she’s making a joke but her heart is broken it brings tears to my eyes Every. Time. anyway Emma Stone slayed this performance with such sweet vulnerability in this essay I will

Just once I want my life to be like an 80’s movie, preferably one with a really awesome musical number for no apparent reason. But no, no, John Hughes did not direct my life.“

i would LOVE to go through and talk about all the literary and eighties movies allusions in easy a but i think that the BEST one is the lawnmower scene at the end where he rides up ON a lawnmower with what’s basically a romantic boombox. my mom and i both clocked it as a parody of the sixteen candles and say anything, but my dad was like “no there was an actual movie where they had this scene on a lawnmower”

and he was RIGHT! the plot of that movie was “nerd pays hot girl to fake date him for a month and ends up becoming super cool and actually getting the girl in the end” and i was like “you know, that actually makes MORE sense for this movie because of the She Spent So Long Living This Lie That Everyone Around Her Believed It And She Was Starting To As Well theme” and if that’s not a good allusion i don’t know what is. props to you easy a
