I dunno, Ed, that looked a bit like a street performance.

ED MYTHBUSTING
Eating disorders are NOT contagious! Stop treating them like they are. It’s a mental illness, just like any other...not contagious!
Thin celebrities aren’t The Reason™️ people have eating disorders, although the way thin bodies are presented may cause or contribute to feelings of insecurity or shame about food and the body.
The invention of size 0 and 00 are not The Cause™️ of eating disorders—and they aren’t unrealistic sizes, some people are just small and need those sizes.
That whole idea that we look in the mirror and see a big fat person when we actually look like skeletons?? It’s just not universal, and it’s strange to assume that it would be. I’m sure some people do have that experience, but it’s not universal. My eyes are fine, I can see my body just fine, it’s about feelings—not about what my body actually looks like.
Not everyone with an ED is super skeletal skinny, or white, or female, or able-bodied, or teenaged. Just like everyone else, we come in all shapes, sizes, colors, ages, etc. We aren’t all skeletal, white, teenage girls 🤷🏽‍♀️
For some reason, in all the fiction I’ve seen about EDs, the girl with the ED has divorced parents with whom she has a rocky relationship? Dysfunctional family situations are a big risk factor and can contribute to stress and disordered eating. But everyone has different experiences and, needless to say (I hope) some of us have good relationships with our parents, some of us have parents who aren’t divorced, etc etc. This one feels particularly harmful though, because it kind of implies that it’s the parents’ fault that their child has an eating disorder because they got divorced.... And divorced doesn’t always mean bad! *EDIT* Divorce can also be very good, as it ends marital conflict that can be traumatic to children and can remove children from a toxic and abusive situation. Unfortunately, this doesn’t erase the trauma that happened before the divorce and doesn’t mean that the divorce itself won’t be traumatic either. Children need love, care, and stability—which they can adequately receive from divorced parents, if no abuse is involved, but sometimes this isn’t provided and the trauma can manifest as an eating disorder.
People with anorexia DO actually eat. Sometimes, we even eat normal, balanced, sufficient meals. Which leads me to...
Not all days are bad days, at least not for everyone. I have an eating disorder, but some days I feel totally fine and normal. Just like any other mental illness...it’s not constant uninterrupted anguish.
“Diet culture” is not The Cause™️ of eating disorders, but it may contribute to feelings of shame about food and the body.
Eating disorders are “about” a person’s relationship with food and their body...but they aren’t really ABOUT a persons relationship with food and their body. For some people, it’s about control, or shame, or gender dysphoria, or fear of adulthood, or purity. For some people it’s about a fear of abandonment, fearing that people will leave you and not take care of you unless you’re sick.
Not everyone with EDs hides their body under baggy clothes! Not all of us feel the need or want to cover up.
Like all mental disorders, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT A LIFESTYLE CHOICE. They’re complex mental disorders, trust me! No one just chooses to starve themselves, force themselves to vomit, eats until it hurts, or exercise till they pass out. These aren’t fun quirky lifestyle choices.
Not all of us “look sick,” you can be a normal weight and still have an ED. This goes back to #5. I’m olive toned and tan which makes my complexion look healthier than the skeletal, white, teen girl you’re expecting—that doesn’t mean I’m doing great.
Getting up to a healthy weight or “looking healthier/better” doesn’t mean someone in recovery is actually doing better. If they were in inpatient care, they likely HAD to gain weight to get out...this doesn’t mean the mental part of this MENTAL ILLNESS is cured.
On the other hand, being thin doesn’t mean someone, even someone with a history of EDs, isn’t doing okay. Again, and I cannot stress this enough, people with EDs come in all different shapes and sizes. Even if someone is “too thin” and in recovery, it doesn’t mean they’re faking, all bodies are different maybe this is normal for them, or maybe they arent at a normal weight for them but they’re really trying to gain weight and get better. Maybe they’ve broken the ED in their brain and are waiting for their body to follow—don’t invalidate their progress by commenting on their size.
Anorexia and Bulimia aren’t the only eating disorders! There’s orthorexia, diabulimia, binge eating disorder, OSFED, etc. No one is worse than another per se, everyone has different experiences, different severity, and no matter what ED someone has it is always deeply painful and everyone deserves help!
Not all eating disorders are connected to or caused by a single traumatic event or by any traumatic event at all. Everyone has different experiences, and some people are just predisposed to develop eating disorders...
If you haven’t guessed by now there is no single Cause™️ of eating disorders. People have different life experiences, different brains, different habits....
People with EDs are not an enemy to people in larger bodies, fat acceptance, body positivity, etc. That would be like saying that people with depression are an enemy to happiness and positivity, and I think we can all agree that that’s not the case. Body positivity is wonderful, and I’m sure there are far more people with EDs than you think who are strong advocates for body positivity or who want to be able to accept the body positive message but aren’t currently capable because of their disorder.
Having an eating disorder doesn’t mean that you just hate food, that you judge others for eating or what they eat, that you fat shame others, etc. I know a lot of people with EDs who LOVE food and are wonderful cooks. Some people with EDs may feel uncomfortable being around people who are eating, but not everyone feels that way. As with any insecurities, people sometimes project their body insecurities onto others—it’s not a great thing to happen, it’s not fun, but it is fairly normal and it doesn’t mean that someone with an ED is necessarily judging other’s food choices or body.
Treatment and recovery are different for everyone—and they should be different for everyone. It’s wrong and dangerous to administer the same treatment to every person with an ED. People with both Type 1 diabetes and an ED (usually, have been misusing insulin to lose weight) need vastly different care than someone with a different condition, and beyond that different people just need different care. No single thing works for everybody, it would be nice if that was the case though!
Please feel free to keep adding, it’s really important to bust these myths, stereotypes, and misconceptions. Just like everybody else, people with EDs are widely varied and diverse and it’s important that we recognize this to make it easier for people to recognize disordered eating and get help.
Feel free to comment on this post. Are there any ED myths I missed that really bug you? Am I wrong?? Let me know!

i just saw that ed mythbusting post and oh my god
I’ve realized that I do treat my eating disorder like it’s contagious ??? Like I’m scared shitless to talk about my ed and self harm because for some reason i’m convinced that the person i’m talking to will also begin using that as a coping mechanism and then I will be at fault Feeling like i gave them that idea
and like in a way it is true. ed especially are so fucked up because in these diet culture times you can easily lead one person into getting an ed
I know that eds arent about the body most of the time but sometimes they ARE and like. you losing a shit ton of weight can affect another person when they notice how much attention you are getting/how people are showering you with compliments and so on
Like its not your fault but it can happen and its so fucked up and i hate it

Have you seen Sex Explained on Netflix yet? If so, thoughts?
I have!! And I really like it. Of course, with a series SO SHORT (like, about 2 hours for the WHOLE thing?) it’s one of the most basic intros you can get - but they cover very up to date research and especially the part about birth control I think every person regardless of gender would do well to watch lol. I LOVE that they tend to give you a history of sorts in a matter of minutes on how we have this knowledge and what civilsations that came before us did with this, andI really do like that they also in general focus on the limits of current treatments and knowledge - asking WHY do we not know this now, WHY are we still doing it this way, and where do we have to look to change that. I like that they focus a lot of that limited time in going into the topics of focusing on the male side of things that often get neglegted while women are so often the recipients of intervention instead (i.e. in fertility treatments or birth control!) and where research needs to be taken to level these imbalances out. I also really like the way they aim to de-mystify sexual fantasies, which can be so mentally scary for many people, and aim to take the preassure out while using research that normalises and explains some of those very, very common sexual fantasies some of us stop to think and worry about why we keep having those!
So, all in all, all of the little there is to this series I very much applaud! However, here as everywhere, I am missing an episode about sexual pleasure. This series is very medical and clinicially focused, which is amazing and they’ve done it in a beautiful, positive and modern way (note, for instance, the fact that there is NOT an episode about STIs! - not to say this isn’t an IMPORTANT topic, but it’s one that has been overfocused in Sex Ed for decades now creating too much fear instead of focusing on ways to protect yourself in general!).
But yeah, all imo it’s missing is an episode focusing on the ACTUAL SEX and how we can make this pleasurable for each other, going into topics like performance anxieties, intimacy, orgasming, the orgasm gap, research on how to orgasm especially for women (from masturbation techniques to thrusting techniques better equipped to reach female orgasm than that stereotypical in-and-out-and-that’s-it; all of it research which exists very much!), mythbusting a lot of sexual myths we still carry around (like, starting from virgintity and libidos and the generally male-centric concept that sex equals vaginal penetration with in and out friction as the epitome of sex, or like even the fact that only about a century ago women were thought to experience no sexual arousal and that she were somehow immature if she didn’t come through vaginal penetration alone and all that nonsense crap), CONSENT IN ALL ITS FACETS, the history of devaluation and denunciation of female pleasure and female sexual experiences, masturbation, research on the average likes and dislikes that are just as quantified already as the research on sexual fantasies is.
(Ya know lol, this stuff I find so little focus in the world of that I’m literally writing fanfiction about it lol.)

Dragon Ball Z 011
Tumblr media
Hot damn!   It’s time for Terror on Arlia!   This is probably one of the best filler episodes ever.   It’s like, the driver’s ed episode, the Goku vs. Pikkon fight, and this.    I’m not sure how I’d rank them, but maybe I’ll work on that sometime later.
Tumblr media
First off, some time has passed once again since the last episode.  Now, Gohan is strong enough that the dinosaur that keeps attacking him is no longer a threat.
Tumblr media
Gohan just calmly runs away from it, then jumps right before he runs into a boulder, and the dinosaur hits it instead.
Tumblr media
Then he hacks off a piece of the dinosaur’s tail while it’s stunned.   Again.   Gohan’s apparently been doing this for a while now, and he warns the dinosaur that it’ll run out of tail at the rate they’re going.   The message is simple: Don’t eat Gohan’s friends.
Tumblr media
Gohan has also figured out how to make his own ki blasts, which is pretty high-level stuff.   His ki may only be powerful enough to start a fire, but it’s way more than most of the other characters could have done at age four.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Bulam, Krillin, and Yamcha are looking for Tien and Chiaotzu.   Or maybe they’re just talking about looking for them now that they have Yamcha.   I’m pretty sure the Gohan scenes are taking place over the course of several weeks, while these Z-Warrior scenes are supposed to be playing out over the course of a single day.  Even if it really is taking this long to find Tien, why would Krillin and Yamcha be with her for the whole search?   They’d be better off heading to Kami’s Lookout, so they can start training for the Saiyans.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Tien, Launch is on the run from the cops for stealing a bunch of money for Tien.
Tumblr media
She eludes the police with a grenade launcher.
Tumblr media
So she escapes with the loot.   Most of it anyway, a lot spilled out of the back while she was being chased.
Tumblr media
But never mind that, here comes Vegeta.   He and Nappa are on their way to Earth, and they set their space pods to put them in stasis for the year-long journey, but Vegeta programmed it to wake them up at a certain point along the way, so they could get out and stretch their legs.
Tumblr media
Seems he found a planet along their course for Earth, and since the Saiyans conquer planets to sell for profit, he sees this as a way to make some nice profit on the side.  This seems a bit out of character for Vegeta, given what we learn about him later on.   I would think that the Planet Trade business is just something he puts up with until he can find a way to get out of it.    So it’s not that he wouldn’t want to take a pit stop on the way to Earth, but I doubt it would be to score some extra cash.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Nappa just wants to get out of the pod and move around a bit, so he’s up for anything.
Tumblr media
And here’s the lucky planet they’re going to.   It’s called Arlia, and it looks really crappy, even from a distance.  There was an episode of Mythbusters where they tested the futility of polishing a turd, and it ended up with them making piles of dung into spheres.    That’s what Arlia looks like.
Tumblr media
The planet actually manages to look even worse up close.   I don’t know if the boys meant to set down in a desolate area like this, but I always got the impression that most of the planet looks like this, so they didn’t have much choice.   Vegeta concedes that they probably won’t find a buyer for Arlia after all.   I figure this is the sort of planet a Space Trillionaire would buy, but only because he wants to feel like a Space Quadrillionaire.
Tumblr media
Suddenly these big bug people show up.    I don’t know why they’re so much bigger than Nappa, when the rest of the Arlians we see are not.   There’s a lot we don’t know about the Arlians, and we’ll probably never know.    They threaten to arrest the Saiyans and take them to King Moai.
Tumblr media
Nappa’s eager to fight them, but Vegeta orders him to stand down for the moment, since he wants to see this Moai guy for himself.    I guess he figures the planets’ leader would be in a more advance (read: valuable) location, which would give Vegeta a better idea of what Arlia has to offer.
Notable, this is the first indication of Saiyans using telepathy.   Goku uses it later on, and we’ve already seen Master Roshi, Crane Hermit, Korin, and Kami use it, but it always seemed to be this mystical thing that only wise old martial artists could do.    Oh yeah, and King Piccolo could telepathically communicate with his offspring.
I guess what I find interesting about this instance is that Vegeta uses it rather casually, when he could just as easily whisper to Nappa, or maybe use some nonverbal gesture to get his point across.    The point here may be to indicate just how scary-powerful Vegeta is, but the thing about Vegeta is that anything we see him do can be applied to every other Saiyan character.   If Master Roshi can read minds, it sort of stops there.   If Vegeta can communicate telepathically, that means Nappa, Raditz, Goku, and Gohan can too, along with every other Saiyan character that hasn’t been introduced yet.   Vegeta might be the only one who knows how at this point, but that’s just a matter of skill.
Tumblr media
So here’s Moai’s stronghold, and guess what, it’s also a dump.   I’m not complaining about the artwork, mind you.    This scenery is breathtaking.   The twin suns sort of make this look like a face, with the clouds forming a furrowed brow.   It’s like the Arlians’ god is looking down on the castle, and he’s not happy with what he’s seeing.
Also, while Moai’s fortress looks moderately impessive, it’s surrounded by absolutely nothing.   What happened on this planet?   My guess is that it was ruined by centuries of war, but it’s also possible that the Arlians prefer it like this.
Tumblr media
Vegeta and Nappa are taken to a dungeon, which looks like something from a Prince Valiant comic.    This is the paradox of Arlia, because it looks like the Arlians are generally familiar with alien visitors, implying that they’ve been exposed to advanced technologies, but their own world is backward and medieval.    They don’t even seem interested in the Saiyans’ ships or their scouters.   And they lock them up behind a wooden gate.    And why do they carry swords when they all seem to have some sort of red mouth laser?
Tumblr media
While they wait, the Saiyans meet Atla, one of the native Arlians who’s been imprisoned by Moai.   Well, “meet” may not be the right word.   Atla just starts introducing himself and explaining the backstory while they stand silently and face in his general direction.
Tumblr media
From Atla’s words, it sounds to me like Moai took over the planet fairly recently, perhaps after a long civil war that killed anyone more qualified to rule.  Unconcerned with actually governing his people, Moai just does whatever he pleases, using his unlimited power to enforce his whims.   So there’s a good chance that the planet looks like a dump because of his indifference.
Tumblr media
I dig this sort of thing, because it reminds me of the decline of the Western Roman Empire, where the emperors eventually became little more than figureheads backed by strong military leaders.   Over time, the Roman armies became supplemented by foreign mercenaries, until eventually the top generals were all foreign mercenaries, and eventually they just dispensed with the figureheads and started ruling Italy outright.    I get the impression that the emperors didn’t particularly care that their domain was being usurped by outsiders, because as long as they were comfortable in their palaces then everything was fine.
There’s kind of a similar pattern in the Bible, where you see David and Solomon’s descendants slowly letting the Kingdom of Israel decline.    Rehoboam’s arrogance caused the kingdom to split in two, and while there were a few good kings who embraced piety and reform, a lot of wicked kings abandoned the principles that made their reigns possible.   They worshipped idols and did whatever they liked, and then eventually they found themselves surrounded by powerful enemies.   The later kings were reduced to vassals, but they didn’t seem too concerned about that as long they got to sit in their palaces and pretend everything was okay.
Atla laments that now Moai is capturing space aliens on top of oppressing his own people, which suggests that Moai only sees his rule as a right to oppress other people for his own amusement.
Tumblr media
I wrote about this episode some time back, comparing Arlia to Westeros from Game of Thrones, or A Song of Ice and Fire or whatever the hell it’s supposed to be called.   I’ve never read the books because I need that time to liveblog anime, but everything I’ve heard about it suggests that the whole story is about some backwater planet full of medieval fantasy tropes, and all the leaders are corrupt, venal idiots who only stay in charge because they’re protected by bullshit laws and traditions, or because they’re better at the endless palace intrigue that goes on in the story.   There’s one kingdom that was ruled by a Draco Malfoy clone, and another run by a guy who hunts naked women for sport, and I think some character keeps fetuses in jars for no apparent reason.    I get the impression that a lot of the books is just George R.R. Martin trying to use shock value to pad things out.   That and lore.   If Tom Clancy and Howard Stern co-wrote Lord of the Rings, you might have something pretty similar to Game of Thrones.
What I’m trying to say here is that Moai seems to just sit around all day watching his subjects fight each other for his own amusment.   He forced Atla’s betrothed, Lemlia, to be his queen (she’s the pink bug lady in the back), and he has soldiers just roaming the wastelands in search of new prisoners to mess with.   His men captured real live space aliens and he’s like “Oh goody!   Bring them before me, because I actually believe they’ll respect the idiotic rules that keep me in power.”    I’m pretty sure this is exactly what King Draco Malfoy Clone would do in this situation.
He looks and talks and acts like a complete buffoon, and he’s just begging for some hero to come along and punch him in the mouthparts.    Except Atla’s in the dungeon, and some other, more competent hero must have gotten killed off three books ago (cf. A Sleet of Testicles).
Tumblr media
And this is what I love about this episode.    Vegeta (along with Nappa, of course) are sort of being put into this role of traveling heroes who enter a tyrant’s domain and set things right.    They’re certainly powerful enough to do it, but we already know that’s not what they’re here for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vegeta kills all the gladiators and informs Moai that he only let himself be captured just to get this close to the king.    It astonishes me that Moai needs to have this explained to him.    He’s so used to having his own way that it never dawned on him that anyone could use his arrogance against him.
Tumblr media
Nappa strikes his classic pose and kills all the guards.
Tumblr media
Then Moai summons an even bigger bug creature named Yedi.  Nappa asks permission from Vegeta to handle this one, which I think is a nice touch.
Tumblr media
Nappa rips off Yedi’s finger and licks the monster blood off his face.    Nappa’s awesome.   He’s just havin’ a good old time.
Tumblr media
I forget why now, but rocks start falling, probably because Vegeta’s powers cause the ceiling to break apart.    Moai takes cover behind his throne...
Tumblr media
...but a rock ends up killing him anyway.  I woudn’t think that’s a vital area, but what do I know about Arlian anatomy?    It’s kind of fitting that Moai should die like this, in his own throne room/gladiator arena, cowering behind his throne.   He thought it would protect him like it always had done in the past, but in the end he met a power that didn’t respect anything he had accomplished.   The Saiyans ignored his royal robes and saw only a fool, and so he died a fool.
Tumblr media
Atla shows up and praises the Saiyans or liberating his planet from Moai’s tyranny.   You know, he could have followed them up here and helped out.   They were all in the same cell, and Vegeta and Nappa destroyed the door and killed all the guards, so what took him so long?
Tumblr media
The Saiyans just sort of look at him, and then they get back in their spaceships.
Tumblr media
I’m not sure why they even bother flying across the surface.   Maybe they’re still surveying the planet, but it’s a crappy planet no matter what angle you view it from.    At last, Vegeta gives up and they head back into space.
Tumblr media
But before they leave, he gets out of his ship and decides to leave a going-away present.    How does Vegeta breathe in space?  That’s one way you can tell which ones are filler scenes.   They usually play faster and looser with this sort of thing.
Tumblr media
On the surface, Atla and Lemlia are reunited at last, and it looks like everything’s going to be okay from now on, thanks to those two heroic aliens who...
Tumblr media
LOL JK, Vegeta blew up the whole planet.
What’s so great about this is that Arlia kind of deserved to die.   Not in the strictest narrative sense, but from a metanarrative viewpoint, it was just a really dumb planet.   Any world that could fall under Moai’s rule probably didn’t have much longer to live anyway, and it’s almost like Vegeta put it out of it’s misery.    I’m not suggesting any of this rationalizes Vegeta’s actions.    This is a horrible, horrible crime, and Vegeta did it like it was nothing to him.   He’s done far worse things with even less compunction.
Even so, he’s not Arlia’s villain, he’s Dragon Ball’s villain, so it’s just satisfying to watch him squash some crappy filler planet that had no redeeming value to the story.   It’s like watching your favorite bad guy wrestler clobber your least favorite good guy wrestler.
Tumblr media
And the narrator sums it up very neatly.    This is what’s headed for Earth.    The Saiyans destroyed Arlia like it was nothing, and what can Earth do to avoid a similar fate?    Z stands for The End.
Tumblr media
But not yet.   Not yet.

Look, there is a whole extensive AU built around this idea (me and @mzminola had FUN yesterday), but they key, important, heart-of-the-issue image is:
Ed, Al, and Winry, growing up in the tiniest town in their sparsely-populated county in the middle of Iowa, barely supervised.  (Resembool is safe, and Trisha is sick, anyway, chronically sick, kept alive by doctors and pills and regular monthly trips to the hospital in the small city over the county line, and Pinako’s not getting any younger, and Winry’s parents have been spending ten months of every year doing Doctors without Borders in one country or another since she was about five, and these particular kids are good at keeping themselves busy, anyway.)
Ed, Al, and Winry who watch far too much Mythbusters at a young and impressionable age and understand very intimately that the difference between just fucking shit up and science is writing it down--or,  in modern terms, putting it on film.
Their shared Youtube channel hits 100k subscribers by Al’s twelfth birthday.
Winry’s all about building shit, which starts out with, like, an easy homemade air rifle out of PVC pipe and ends up with the barn-sized particle accelerator she puts together the summer before freshman year of high school, because why not.  Generally she’ll have a couple of videos about how she screwed and soldered and welded together the project of the week out of household junk, scrap metal, and $3 parts from the local Ace Hardware, and then the boys take over.
Ed is, unsurprisingly, much more into taking things apart.  Explosively.  Of course.  But it’s not just about fire and demolitions--he started a lot of this messing around as a way to test out and learn things that their (admittedly relatively pathetic) sixth and seventh-grade science textbooks didn’t explain properly.  It starts with a bunch of experimental demonstrations of kinetic physics and moves on to electricity and magnetism, to heavy-duty chemistry, stripping the whole world down to the studs to see the scaffolding that underlies the universe.  Half the reason their channel gets so popular at first is because they are learning science and it’s helpful.  Then the science talk starts going over most people’s heads and college physics students watch their videos to study for exams while most of their other subscribers just hang out for the explosions.
Al is widely considered the sensible one of the trio.  He does a lot of the camera work and most of the editing.  (”We’re using this portable wind generator, Winry made it in our last few videos, if you haven’t seen them you can click on the thing--there’ll be a thing in the video, that thing where you click--” “Yes, brother, I’ll make sure there’s a link to Winry’s construction videos right here when it gets posted.”)  He also occasionally takes point in a couple of the investigation videos, usually when he’s the one who has a research question to begin with, and those tend to be fascinating, twisty in the way even Ed’s research explorations aren’t, and involve significant property damage as an incidental byproduct rather than a subgoal of the whole project.
Ed, Al, and Winry, in the same class in junior high and high school, sitting in the back row of their class of the same twenty-three kids they’ve been in school with since they were five and six, pouring over blueprints for solid-state lasers and completely ignoring the teacher trying to explain that force equals mass times acceleration.  It happens every single year, as every teacher tries to get them to pay attention and slowly gives up, and the only question is how stubborn the teacher is and whether they’ll succeed briefly in history or English class or not.
Riding their bikes up the gravel road from the Elric house into town to go to the hardware store.  Winry hanging out around the local auto shop in overalls and a head kerchief, learning everything she can and endearing herself to the mechanics until she can use them as a regular source for old parts destined for the trash.  Heading out into the hills between the Rockbell and Elric houses to set things on fire and send rockets up towards the sky, to make, to learn.
(Professor Roy Mustang, tenure-track chemist still trying to build a name for himself after his relatively brilliant PhD thesis set ripples of excitement throughout the chemistry community, finds out about them when one of his Gen Chem undergrads asks him snottily at the end of class, “Hey, didn’t you say last week that xyz theorem was unproven and unprovable?  Because I’m pretty sure a couple of kids on youtube just did.”)
