Ren awoke on his own before the sun had begun to rise and started on his preparations. One of the villagers had come by the evening prior and dropped off all the supplies he had asked for. Nothing was quality made and there was barely any silver and powder but he had to make do. If push came to shove he could always retreat and come back after restocking. But that wouldn’t happen of course.
Before he headed out he took great care in sharpening his dagger and inspecting his flintlock pistol for any damage from the humid environment. Keeping his powder dry was going to be the worst task to keep track of. Ren shouldered his bag and left the chapel. He didn’t react to any greetings from the villagers as he disappeared into the wilderness.
The sounds of the village dissipated and instead the air was filled with the noise of the swamp around him. Frogs and birds were joined in chorus with bugs and the only foreign sound was the squelching of his boots on the soft muddy ground. It was tricky to navigate the landscape and despite having asked for a map from the villagers it was barely legible and he could hardly make out any landmarks on it. After stepping into yet another  puddle that was deeper than it seemed he let out a string of curses and pulled his soaked leg out of it. Ren ripped the map apart and sat down on an exposed root. He pulled out his flask and took a swig of water followed by an annoyed sigh. “How does anyone navigate this place?” he grumbled to himself as the noise around him made it difficult to even get his thoughts in order. There had to be a hint as to the witch’s whereabouts. Something he wasn’t seeing. He let his gaze travel around the landscape. Small ponds and muddy ground dotted with trees that were still dense enough to create and underbrush. A sudden loud buzzing in his ear made him growl and swat at the gnat that tried to find purchase on his neck. “Fuck off!” Mid strike his eyes lit up. The elder had mentioned something about a buzzing of bugs when the witch had first attacked that boy. He just had to find the biggest swarm and hope that it could lead him to the witch. With renewed energy he got up and trekked on. He followed every swarm of flies, every mosquito. No insect escaped his attention but at the end of the day he was just following a loose lead.
The sun had already begun to set when Ren reached a small clearing. The ground was covered in moss and flowers. A green carpet dotted with softs and pinks and purples. It was quite a tranquil sight and even the noises around him seemed to die down as he entered it. This place felt strange and Ren was sure that he was on the right track now. Considering the late hour he decided to make camp for the night. He gathered some wood and started a small campfire. The food he had gotten from the village was nothing to write home about but it was better than having to forage for food in this godforsaken place. Not that starving would be a problem around here. This bog was filled with life and he could have sworn that he had even seen a partridge  disappear in the underbrush at one point.
Ren shook his head to clear his thoughts and focus on his plans. By following the insects he had at least found a new place but he had to find a better strategy than wandering around aimlessly. Perhaps he should find a source of clean water and stake out the area. The witch still had to eat and drink after all. It was also quite possible that there was a spell on the area that would turn intruders around. If that was the case Ren would have to make sure to mark his path from now on and find a way around the spell.
The sun had fully set and the wilderness around had turned pitch black. The only specks of light outside the ring cast by the fire were a few fireflies, lazily buzzing between the trees. Ren’s thoughts had trailed off and he was staring into the fire, his hands preoccupied with the rosary around his neck. The soft, moss covered ground swallowed any sounds of someone approaching on the other side of the fire. Only when the sounds of bones and small rocks clattering together hit his ears did his trance-like state break. His eyes shot up and were met by a golden gaze on the other side of the flames. The villagers clearly hadn’t seen this witch up close. The stubble along their chin and upper lip clearly marked them as a man but he could see why from afar they could be mistaken for a woman. Soft features and dust covered rosy skin was framed by a head of wild, moss-green hair. A pair of crescent moon shaped earrings twinkled in the firelight and the shawl made of feathers looked more clean than he had expected from a wild witch. Their eyes were the color of liquid gold and seemed to almost be glowing in the low light. Ren couldn’t help but stare and somehow the picture of an angel came to his mind. He quickly shook off those thoughts and his hand reached for the dagger on his chest. “Don’t.” Their voice was barely a whisper but still he could hear it loud and clear over the crackling fire. “I will be gone by the time you reach me or fire a shot.” Their eyes still fixed on Ren's; the witch sat down after he removed his hand from the dagger. “What do you want?” He finally asked after a moment of silence. The witch’s eyes lit up with a smile. “That wholly depends on you, my dear hunter.” They seemed to shuffle closer, mischief clear in their eyes. “What did the villagers tell you? Have I stolen children? Turned the milk of their goats to blood? Brought famine?” They chuckled as they listed all the things people claimed witches would do to hurt people. The initial feeling of awe that Ren had had disappeared as he saw how unafraid the witch was of him. “You cursed the men of the village after you threatened the woodcutter’s son.” There was a moment of silence, only the sounds of the bog around them filling the air, before the witch erupted into laughter. Where Ren had expected an evil cackle he was met with a soft laughter that reminded him of the chiming of bells. Bright and light and airy. “Oh my poor hunter! You have it all wrong.” They wiped a tear from their eyes. “Then what did you do to the men who have gone mad with fear through your curse?” He was getting frustrated not because the witch seemed so comfortable around him but because he kept catching his thoughts wandering to the sound of their voice and their feminine form. “Oh…you mean the boy that intruded onto my land and the men that came after to burn me?” The smile disappeared from their lips and was replaced by a sneer. “This land isn’t yours-”- “It isn’t theirs either!” They snapped back. “This wilderness belongs to all the creatures that live in it. Everything that eats and sleeps and breathes. Everything that shits and pisses and fucks. And that includes me. So why can I not say that this is my land?” The burning glow in the witch’s golden eyes was mesmerizing to Ren as he could barely hold their gaze without feeling his cheeks turning hot. A heavy sigh suddenly dropped all tension in the air as the witch leaned on their hands. “I never cursed any of those people. All I did was frighten them. Theatrics. Nothing more.” They waved their free hand as if swiping something away. Ren found it hard to believe that. He was speaking to a witch after all. They were cunning if they wanted to. “But you don’t deny that you are in fact a witch?” They shrugged at the question. “I guess I never did, no. If you want to hear it so badly then fine. I am a witch and a pretty good one if I may say so myself.” They smirked and tapped their chin. “However I steer clear of any settlements that lie around the bog. Normal folk are too much trouble in my eyes. I prefer the occasional hunter.” Their eyes locked unto Ren’s once more and unreadable glint in them. “I am not sure I follow. What do you do with witch hunters?” His frown was met with a light chuckle. “I play with them. Don’t get me wrong I like the bog. It is serene but also so dull after a while.” They sighed. “So this is like a game to you?” The frown deepened as annoyance mixed into his expression. “And for you it isn’t?” The question caught him off guard. His mouth opened and shut a few times before the witch continued. “The thrill of the hunt. Having an opponent on your level to outwit. Tell me my dear hunter: have you ever gone against a so-called wild witch?” They tilted their head and seemed to be searching for something in Ren’s expression. “I have to admit all witches I have persecuted so far have been members of communities. But that doesn’t make my accomplishments invalid.” The witch nodded. “I see. But isn’t that awfully dull? Burning a young girl for speaking her mind? Wouldn’t you like to chase a real witch for a change?”
Ren’s gaze went distant for a moment as his thoughts trailed back to the witches he had burned so far. His concentration was broken as the witch on the other side of the fire stirred and rose to their feet. “All I want is a little fun. So why not make this something we can both enjoy? If you catch me you can do whatever you want with me. Parade me around the village, burn me, I do not care. I will be at your mercy.” The last word was almost a purr as it reached Ren’s ears and he could feel them grow hot as his imagination went wild. “And what if I don’t find you? What will you get in return?” He got to his feet as well, eliciting a small gasp of surprise from the witch as they realized how tall the witch hunter was. “Well…all I want is a little fun. So how about we just say that the game lasts until one of us dies?” They smiled with mischief twinkling in their eyes. “I would hate for that to happen though. So you better find me, my dear hunter.” They chuckled and turned to leave. “Wait! Will you at least tell me your name?” He tried to reach across the fire as the witch turned back to look at him once more. “Hum. How about I tell you once you catch me? Then you can tell me yours as well.” The soft smile on their black painted lips was enough to cause Ren’s heart to flutter. He gave a nod that he hoped was self assured and didn’t waver. “It’s a promise then. Good night.” With a wave the witch disappeared into the dark bog and Ren was left alone once more.
A loud crack of the dying fire caused Ren’s eyes to shoot open. He sat up and searched his surroundings. The sky was turning a soft blue as the sun had begun its ascend and the fire had reduced to white ash and rosy glimmers. He let out a long sigh as he relaxed and rubbed his face. “Just a dream.” As he let his hands drop to his lap a glint at the edge of the fire caught his eye. He reached over and pulled a crescent moon shaped earring from the ashes. He held it up into the light and remembered seeing them dangling from the witch’s ear. It hadn’t been a dream after all or at least not fully. He let the earring drop into his pocket and stood up, dusting off his coat and pants. He shouldered his bag and headed for the direction the witch had disappeared towards the previous night. “It’s a promise. I will find you Angel.”

Reading Update (05/15/23)
Tumblr media
Ratings, statuses, and opinions under the cut
A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik (10/10)
I love this book so much! I reread it for my book club, through which I recruited to of my friends to the cause. This was my first time rereading since reading The Golden Enclaves, and the foreshadowing is just so insane. El and Orion drive me nuts, I can't possibly be normal about them. READ THIS BOOK!!
Broken Bonds by J. Bree (7/10)
This is technically a reread as well. I really enjoy the premise of this story, even though the plot isn't very strong. It's a great wish-fulfillment romance, especially for anyone who likes a heaping dose of angst. The substance is...nonexistent, but I still enjoyed it and sped through it.
Savage Bonds by J. Bree (8/10)
The second in the series, this one gets into it a little more. It feels like things actually happen in this book, and the cliffhanger is much better! There's significant developments in the romance, and a lot of the previously one-dimensional characters get some death. There's definitely still a lot of round-aboutness and frustration, but it's improving.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins (CR)
I'll preface this by saying I normally don't read prequels. I don't like knowing how a story will end. That being said, this is pretty good so far. Collins is amazing at making you almost root for Snow until he says or does something and you remember what a terrible person he is. My big critique is that it is very slow so far, and I have trouble picking it up again once I put it down.
Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas (CR)
I don't really like SJM. While I think she is a technically good writer, her plots and characters are often overdone and lackluster. I didn't much like Crown of Midnight, but I promised my friends I'd read this series, so I will. I'm only around a quarter of the way through; so far, Celaena is...whiny, Chaol is boring, but I've heard a lot about Rowan so I'm at least intrigued, and Manon slays.

the tombs of atuan is my fav because i realised the reason i keeping finding the climax underwhelming in a book i otherwise lovedis because they spentthe whole book building up this scary unknown and then in the last act they show it to you and its kind of boring. and its not even that its bad writing its that the known thing can never live up to the potential of the unknown thing so that will always be fundamentally disappointing esp in literature but the tombs of atuan is like the best case study in maintaining the unfathomability of the threat and resolving it in some other way than making the unknown known

Here Comes 21
In exactly two months I'm gonna kiss my 20 goodbye, and what a hell of a period it was.
The very 20 everyone dreams of while growing up is just an emotional rollercoaster I swear you don't wanna get on to just a moment before you're so freakin' happy and then you realise everything's slipping and you just can't do anything other than having a panic attack !!!yeah right talk about the shit. You've got so much to think about your career which is not at all going around like you've planned then there's this perfect life you thought you're going to have which you can feel slipping out of your control that's how it is becoming an adult. There's so much going on inside of that grey matter of yours but what you can do is paste a smile on that silly acne filled face and say I'm totally fine What can possibly be wrong in my life, I'm in college I've got an exam to look up to. That shit crazy is being 20 and whatever crap it holds ahead.
But hey cheers to 20!!!
And hello to 21✨

So, this happened to me a few days ago. I was taking the bus and almost didn't made it inside. Because of that, the girl behind me was looking at the closed doors, shrugged and looked back at her phone. Next to me standing sat an old woman and an old man which I thought were a couple, because prejudice or whatever. The old man looks at the girl, grunts and starts mocking her like what the heck, dude?
Man: The youth nowadays is so spoiled! She looked at her phone, I've seen it clearly!
(Me, thinking: Yes, because that thingy that tells you which bus will arrive at what time got driven over a few weeks ago by another bus and the city doesn’t care for replacing it. (It looked very dramatic. It also was the bus I normally did take, so thank you, dear angels. (Nobody died as far as I know.)))
Man: She deserves what she got! Such spoiled brats should face some bad luck! In my days (- yes, he really said that -) we were not that disrespectful to the drivers!
The whole bus is now giving him looks, he does not feel it however. (Kind of amazing, if I think about it, I felt them and I wasn't even the target.) The older lady at his side opens her mouth and I am sighing silently, expecting another rant about the youth nowadays.
Lady, calmly, politely interestet: Do you always have such a bad mood?
Me: burying my crazy laughter in my thankfully very big scarf.
Man, panicking: I DO NOT HAVE A BAD MOOD!
The Lady looks at me, rolling her eyes. The man starts ranting about how his outburst was very normal, doesn’t succeed though. It was hilarious. The Lady stand up, says a friendly goodbye and walks out of the bus.
