This movie is deeply generic and uninspired, but on the other hand, it is also very very boring.
Also, not a mermaid. Just your basic drowned ghost bride.

film review: “Mermaid: Lake of the Dead” (2018) * *

Everybody has heard about the legend of the lake and yet history repeats itself: Every now and then, a man mysteriously disappears in it. It is believed that an evil mermaid pulls them down to her realm and their death.
Modern day: Roma celebrates his stag night by the lake. Frustrated with the party, he goes for a swim. And it doesn't take long before the evil creature appears...
The film is marketed as a horror film but to be honest, it wasn't very scary. Also: It has many bad reviews. Okay, it is not really a cinematic masterpiece, but to be honest I quite enjoyed it. It is visually pleasant and the characters are likeable. I'd say the film's biggest weakness is the lengths in between. And water, oh my God, is there a lot of water.
That said: View it as a mystery film. It's okay for fans of mermaids, folklore and perfect for a one time movie night.

New Trailer For THE MERMAID: LAKE OF THE DEAD Will Pull You Under
The trailer for The Mermaid: Lake of the Dead was released recently, and it is the furthest thing from The Little Mermaid. Growing up, Disney’s The Little Mermaid was required viewing. It was a touching tale of a young mermaid who longs to join surface existence as a human. In step with most pop culture portrayals, Disney’s mermaids were sometimes a little dangerous, but mostly rather benign. But this is the era of the scary mermaid now! *cough* Blue My Mind *cough-cough* Freeform’s Siren.
Coming soon, the director of The Bride is going to introduce you to a mermaid that wants you to be a part of her world… In a watery grave. The Mermaid: Lake of the Dead, directed by Svyatoslav Podgaevskiy teases a story of love, obsession, and dying in a cold, watery circumstance. It stars Viktoriya Agalakova and Igor Khripunov, who both appeared in Podgaevskiy’s Bride, along with Efim Petrunin, Nikita Elenev and Sesil Plezhe.
The plot synopsis is as follows:
An evil Mermaid falls in love with Marina’s fiancé Roman and aims to keep him away from Marina in her Kingdom of Death under water. The Mermaid is a young woman who drowned a few centuries ago. Marina only has one week to overcome her fear of the dark water, to remain human in the deathly fight with the monsters and not to become one herself.
Unlike The Shape of Water, another water-based love story, this looks like it will not have a happy ending. Still, if you’re interested in some cursed mermaid fun with plenty of scares and thrills, you may have to wait a while longer if you live in North America. For now the film will be released July 19, 2018 in Russia, which should make for good watching just as everyone heads to nearby lakes for camping vacations. Rest assured, Nightmare on Film Street will let you know when and where you can see some killer mermaid action.
