Jet drones spotted over Belgorod region of Russia - Technology Org
A jet drone was spotted over the Belgorod region of Russia. Local Russians are getting used to constant drone attacks and the hopelessness of their own air defences, but they haven’t seen jet drones before. They will now have to get used to them too.
A jet drone somewhere in the skies over Belgorod region of Russia. (Screenshot)
Jet drones circling over the Belgorod region were filmed by local residents. There is almost no doubt that these are kamikaze drones, but it was not reported whether they destroyed anything. It is also not reported whether they were shot down or taken down using some electronic warfare tools. But there are already guesses as to what these aircraft could have been.
[embedded content]
In May of last year, it was reported that the United Kingdom had handed over Banshee jet drones to Ukraine. In February of this year, Russian invaders found the wreckage of a similar drone in the occupied part of the Donetsk region. It is believed that the defenders of Ukraine are using British drones for attacks on important targets or have copied the Banshee design and are now producing something similar themselves.
Interestingly, the Banshee was developed back in the 1980s, but had a pusher propeller configuration back then. The Royal Navy only crammed two jet engines into the Banshee’s tail in 2021. This is how the Banshee Jet 80+ was created, which has endurance for 45 minutes and a range of just over 100 km.
The Banshee will certainly not be the longest-range drone in the Ukrainian arsenal, but it has a speed of 720 km/h and goes up to an altitude of 9 km, so it is not the easiest thing to shoot down. It should be remembered that Iran has also developed a jet version of the Shahed-136 drone. Despite the fact that jet drones are more expensive, they are harder to shoot down with the cheapest means, unlike the slow propeller drones.
Banshee drones are used all over the world. Over the years over 8,000 of them were manufactured, mostly with propeller engines. But here’s an interesting detail: Banshee was not designed for the tasks that the Ukrainians are using it for.
The Banshee was originally designed as a target drone for air defence systems. It is used in exercises to test the readiness of soldiers and equipment to counter various threats from the air. The Banshee Jet 80+ was designed for the same task. But the defenders of Ukraine, unfortunately, have no shortage of aerial targets, so they install 7 kg of explosives on the Banshee and send these drones at Russian targets like smaller and slower cruise missiles.
Ukraine received a limited number of Banshee drones. However, these precise tools will certainly do their part in attacking crucial targets in Russia. Lately those have been various objects in the Russian oil industry.

Ukraine Destroys Russia’s Brand-New $65 Million Warship Sergei Kotov
Ukraine has destroyed the newest patrol ship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the $65 million Sergei Kotov, and left pro-Kremlin war reporters sulking.
“As a result of a strike by Magura V5 maritime drones, the Russian Project 22160 ship Sergei Kotov received damage to the stern, starboard and left sides,” Ukrainian military intelligence said in a statement.
“The fewer such ships, the fewer anti-aircraft missile systems will be deployed on them, meaning more opportunities for Ukrainian security and defense forces,” spokesman Andriy Yusov told local media, adding that more than 10 ambulances were spotted rushing to help the evacuated crew members. At least seven crew members were killed, Ukrainian authorities said.
Audio of what Ukraine described as an intercepted radio communication also appeared to capture a Russian commander reporting on the “tragic event” and destruction of the ship, lamenting that a helicopter had also been obliterated in the nighttime attack near the Kerch Strait.
The 308-foot, 1,700-ton ship entered the Black Sea Fleet in July 2022.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has yet to comment on the incident, though pro-Kremlin military bloggers begrudgingly admitted that Ukraine had pulled off the attack.
“If it continues like this, the Black Sea Fleet will have only catamarans and rubber banana boats for vacationers. It’s fucked,” wrote one popular pro-war Telegram channel.
The Sergei Kotov had been targeted in three previous attacks by Ukrainian forces before finally being taken out this time around. Noting that Russia had plenty of defenses in place to protect the ship, pro-war propagandist Alexander Kots said that “unfortunately, the enemy is also evolving.”
“The crew fought heroically until the end. … But this time it is a story without a happy ending,” he wrote on social media.
“The ship ‘Sergei Kotov’ sunk,” wrote former Vladimir Putin adviser Sergei Markov, calling it part of a “new type of war” in which “what matters most are the multitude of drones, space reconnaissance, and electronic warfare.”
“This is where we need to overtake the West,” he said.

Updated B-52 electronic warfare suite will be tested in flight in 2024
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/29/2024 - 10:36 in Military
Flying through the skies since the 1950s, the B-52 Stratofortress is a U.S. Air Force (USAF) workhorse and a lasting symbol of American military power. The eight-engine giant has unique capabilities unparalleled to any other American warplane - which is why, after more than 70 years of service, it continues to play a vital role in the defense and national security strategy of the U.S. And thanks to a collaboration between L3Harris and USAF, this iconic aircraft is prepared to remain ready for the mission against highly sophisticated emerging threats in the coming decades.
Under a 10-year contract worth $947 million granted in 2021, L3Harris is upgrading and improving the AN/ALQ-172 electronic war self-protection system (EW), which protects the B-52 and air crews from a wide range of electronic threats. Our current work is based on decades of experience in providing critical technology as a Manufacturer of Original Equipment of the AN/ALQ-172 systems for the B-52 fleet. And combined with other ongoing modernization efforts, these updates will increase the relevance and reliability of the B-52 by the 2050s.

L3 Harris AN/ALQ-172 systems.
"Our opponents continue to evolve, facing advanced and far-reaching threats that challenge our ability to operate in contested environments," says Robert "Trip" Raymond, USAF's Program Leader for EW Technology Development at L3Harris. "It is essential that we provide our B-52 crew with the necessary tools to keep the B-52 relevant, lethal and survivable as the backbone of the strategic bomber force of the United States."
The effort of modernization and support - ALQ-172 Maintenance and Reliability System (MARS) - intends to do exactly that, increasing the average time between failures due to its modular design, while further improving the performance, maintenance capacity and reliability of the system. Thanks to an integrated and improved radio frequency system, crews will be able to simultaneously combat multiple radar threats that interfere with aircraft operations. And by replacing analog systems with more economical software solutions, USAF will be able to reduce the size of B-52 crews from 5 to 4. This frees up resources for additional mission-critical activities.
Ultimately, the updates will further help USAF in its Global Attack Mission and strengthen the effectiveness of the B-52 in modern warfare, while making future upgrades cheaper and easier.
"We are implementing affordable solutions that not only reduce costs, but also provide crews with more advanced protection against the most sophisticated threats detected by radar," said Jimmy Mercado, Program Director at L3Harris. "All this results in a more modern, efficient and effective aircraft, ready to dominate the future struggle."
USAF plans to conduct a test flight with the new electronic warfare capabilities of the B-52 in 2024.

Kaiju Week in Review (August 27-September 2, 2023)
Tumblr media
Godzilla Battle Line has cemented its reputation as the Super Smash Bros. of kaiju games by bringing in the GAMERA -Rebirth- incarnations of Gamera and Gyaos later this month. Gamera showing up in a Godzilla game is a huge deal—this is the first time the two have properly met outside of poorly-documented live performances. Even in City Shrouded in Shadow, they only appeared in separate levels. Given all the fantasy-match debates over the years, maybe it's for the best that they're coming to blows in a medium where either could emerge the victor.
Tumblr media
Godzilla Rivals: Vs. SpaceGodzilla marks Matt Frank's triumphant return to the IDW Godzilla line (covers aside). It reminded me a lot of The Last Hope: the fall of an advanced civilization at the hands of kaiju, narrated but dialogue-free. As in Rulers of Earth, Frank draws a mean SpaceGodzilla - more personable than the one from the actual movie but just as much of a dick. Singura, his all-new rival, is a neat creation too, with more abilities than this concept art lets on.

Sometimes these Weeks in Review are outdated before I can post them. Behold the teaser for the trailer for Godzilla Minus One, both of which you have surely watched five times by now. I'm hoping to have an analysis post up shortly.
Tumblr media
Godzilla Voxel Wars is a game headed for Steam in November 2023. A turned-based strategy game, it pits a host of Toho monsters against an alien race called the Fungoids (interesting, and perhaps accidental, synergy with IDW's Zoospora). Toho Games is developing it with Nukenin. I'm intrigued, mostly because this style of Godzilla game usually forces you to control the military, but the art style isn't the most appealing. They look like nanoblocks. It's also catching some flak for its similarities to Into the Breach.
Tumblr media
Titanosaurus has long been one of the most coveted Movie Monster Series figures since his release in 2002, and he's finally getting another edition, alongside a Godzilla '75 (last seen as part of the Memorial Box in 2005).
Tumblr media
JSDF plans for new anti-aircraft electronic warfare equipment had Japanese Twitter abuzz, on account of the vehicle looking for all the world like a Maser Cannon. I'm sure kaiju filmmakers will start looking for excuses to have them show up.

Look How Big Is the Shahed Drone Used by Russia to Attack Ukrainian Cities - Technology Org
Russia has been using Iranian Shahed-136 drones against Ukraine since the second half of 2022. These drones are not a minor annoyance – they are a huge threat and a very powerful weapon.
Russia is now making its own Shahed-136 version called the Geran-2 and Ukraine is still learning new ways to defeat them. Recently, as shared by the National Police of Ukraine, one such drone was captured whole – a rare achievement by the defenders of Ukraine.
Most of the Shahed-136/Geran-2 drones launched towards Ukraine are successfully destroyed before they have an opportunity to reach their targets. Various missiles (mostly, MANPADS) and anti-aircraft machine guns are used for that.
When a Shahed-136 drone is hit in the sky, it usually explodes or crashes down and, usually, breaks into many pieces. Ukraine has gathered many wreckages like that and has gained some important knowledge from their analysis, but now they have captured a whole unexploded and pretty much intact Shahed-136.
Just take a look at this thing:

You might have seen the videos of Shahed attacks in Ukraine and maybe even saw the wreckage of these drones. But it is hard to imagine their size without seeing it in relation with other things or people.
The Shahed-136 is a 200 kg drone with a warhead of 50 kg. It is 3.5 metres long and has a wingspan of 2.5 metres. It is so big, it would not fit in most cargo vans, unless it was put at an angle (normally it is just too wide). And yet this thing is said to have a range of about 2,500 km.
It is unclear whether this particular drone was disposed of or taken apart for analysis. However, there is an interesting detail about its downing – some sources have reported that it was defeated using electronic warfare systems. In other words, it was attacked by some sort of jammers that made the drone lost or otherwise confused enough to come down so gently in an empty field.
People’s Deputy of Ukraine Oleksandr Fedienko confirmed that Ukraine now has the electronic warfare capabilities needed to take down Shahed-136 drones. Of course, shooting them down is still the primary mode of defence, but falling debris can still be dangerous. If it is possible to bring them down gently, it needs to be done.
This image of Ukrainian sappers by the Shahed-136 drone illustrates the real size of this weapon. Image credit: National Police of Ukraine via Wikimedia (CC BY 4.0)
The most important advantage of the Shahed-136 drone was always its price. It is a cheap drone, estimated to cost from 10 to 50 thousand dollars. This does mean that some corners had to be cut and that might open the doors for taking them down using electronic warfare tools. For example, analysis of the debris showed that these drones used simple cell phone 4G modems and SIM cards for communication.

Largely snow-covered with picture-postcard scenes of snowy fields and solitary forests: the countryside near the small village of Silene in the very southeast of Latvia is extremely beautiful in the winter(..)
P.S. While the cheap clown Donald Trump is fooling his voters with false promises, Latvia and the other Baltic countries are successfully eliminating the problems caused by illegal human smuggling by quietly and without fuss building fences along the entire Eastern border.
The Baltic Defense Line will be supplemented with minefields, bunkers, radio-electronic warfare systems, surveillance and kamikaze drones, trenches, artillery, anti-tank and anti-aircraft missile positions... and etc. The Russians in Ukraine have a numerical advantage of 30 to one Ukrainian soldier in some sectors of the front, but the Russians are still unable to advance, losing hundreds of dead and wounded every day...! Timely prepared complex passive and active defense systems against the Russians are effective...
The Russians orchestrated the illegal migrant invasion by extorting huge sums of money from the migrants, but the Russian project to destabilize Poland, all three Baltic states and Finland failed thanks to a swift and brutal backlash: borders were closed, migrants were driven back to Russia and fake human rights defenders bought by the people smugglers were ignored…
