Later that afternoon, Louie brought home his new friend, and neighbor, Sidera Harper!

"Are you sure it's okay, Louie?" Sid asked, worry etched on her face.

"Yeah!" Louie said. "Well...uh...is it okay to your Auntie — I mean Miss Swanson?"

"Yep! I texted Auntie, she said it's fine," Sid nodded. "She's gonna pick me up later from work. And she also wants to invite you over for a sleepover for the holidays..."

"A sleepover?!" Louie cried, holding her arms and jumping up and down. "That's awesome! When?!"

"Yeah!" Sid jumped too. "The holidays!"

"Alright!"

Just then, their door opened. Jason stood on the doorway, Mason in an arm. "Hey, what's going on here? Why is there shouting?"

"Oh, hey Pa!" Louie waved.

"Hello, Mr. Davis," Sid nodded, clasping her hands.

"Oh! Hello, Sid, come on in," Jason stepped back motioning them to go inside. "You guys hungry? Want some snacks?"

Louie and Sid played on the former's console, while Jason was busy teaching Mason new words.

"Now, buddy, say Suly Suly!" Jason said. "It's basically Sul Sul but it's like...western. Like wild west, like horse ranch! You know what I mean?"

"Sul sul." Mason said.

"No, no, no, no," Jason chuckled shaking his head. "Suly Suly."

Louie looked back at them from the couch. "Really, Papa?"

Sid turned around from her seat, leaning on the arm of the chair.

"What?" Jason sighed. "Just teaching your brother the ways of a cowboy!"

"Mr. Davis, were you a cowboy when your were young?" Sid asked.

"Erm..." Jason cleared his throat. "I was close...? But it turns out I wanted to be a chef! If I didn't became a chef I wouldn't be able to meet your Mama, Lou."

"Awww!" Sid swooned.

"Eugh," Louie cringed.

"Aw, come on don't be like that, Lou!" Jason said. "Your papa just want to reminisce his equestrian days!"

Sophia walked home from the subway, an umbrella on a hand, a bag on another. She's exhausted from work. When she got home, she found her husband on the couch, Mason on his lap, talking about riding a horse with Louie and Sid.

All of them looked up, and greeted Sophia, who had just closed her umbrella.

"Hi Mama! Welcome home!" Louie said, jumping up from the couch and running up to her, hugging her tightly.

"Hello, Lou," she said, petting his head.

"Hi, Mrs. Davis!" Sid stood up, waving.

"Hello to you, too, Sid," she smiled at her, albeit tiredly.

"Hey, Ma," Jason said, then he brought up Mason, hand controlling the little one's arm to wave. He mimed, "Hi Mama!"

Sophia laughed.

"You four enjoy yourselves, alright? I'll be upstairs," She said, patting Louie's back when he let go of her.

They watched her go up the stairs.

"Oh, sorry, is it a bad time I'm here?" Sid asked, biting her lips.

"No, no! No," Jason shook his head, kneeling beside her. "I'm sure she's just tired. You've got nothing to worry about!"

"Really?"

"Yeah," Louie nodded, patting her shoulder. "Maybe it's not Mama's day today."

Just then, they heard the doorbell.

"I'll take that," Jason stood up, walking to the door. "Lou watch your brother."

"Got it!" Louie sat beside his brother who was chewing on the blanket. Sid kneeled waving a finger on Mason.

"Heyyy! How can I — Oh, Ms. Swanson," Jason jolted as soon as he opened the door. "Are you here to get Sid?"

"Yes," Elizabeth nodded, arms crossed.

"R-Right!" Jason nodded, before calling Sid.

Sid ran to the door, hugging her aunt. "Auntie!"

Elizabeth wrapped an arm around her neice, smiling a bit.

"Did you have fun, Sid?" Elizabeth asked.

Sid nodded, "Mr. Davis made us cookie milkshakes!!"

Elizabeth looked at him sharply.

"I-I made sure the kids didn't have too much sugar, don't worry," Jason awkwardly laughed. "Made them drink lots of water, of course."

Louie had joined them by the door, carrying Mason. "Hello, Miss Swanson! Thanks for letting Sid come with me!"

"Of course, Louie," Elizabeth nodded, giving him a small smile.

Louie went back in when Mason made grabby hands saying, "Pich! Pich!"

"Thanks for having Sid, Mr. Davis," Elizabeth said. "We'd....love to have Louie for a sleepover. If that's alright? You had Sid over here, so it's — you know —"

"Of course, of course!" Jason nodded. "We'd love to have the kids a sleepover!"

Sid squealed, "Yay!"

Once Upon a Workday: Encouraging Tales of Resilience by Elizabeth Pich and Jonathan Kunz

Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Humorous and heartwarming tales of resilience, self-care, and mental health from the popular webcomic  @warandpeas.

Imagine a mix of Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss but writing about the everyday stresses of working adults. That gives you a pretty good idea of this book.

I love War and Peas, so I was excited to see this book. Each poem/story tells a humorous tale of a likely burnt out adult just trying to survive another day. For example, the first one entitled "A Job is a Job" begins: "Another day breaks, you pour out of bed. Not a minute awake and in creeps the dread." I can't think of anyone I know who hasn't experienced.

This books tells stories of the mundane and at times exhausting parts of life in a fun way, with whimsical illustrations attached.

My favorite poem was "Sincerely Yours" which was almost too relatable. It tells the story of someone trying to figure out how to sign a work email. It contains evocative lines such as: "There must be a line that perfectly sums it up. One that shows how I feel but not too much."

I think this is a perfect book to keep in a home office to remind yourself to keep strong while not forgetting to be a little silly.
