In case you missed it: artificial intelligence (AI) will make teachers redundant, become sentient, and soon, wipe out humanity as we know it. From Elon Musk, to the godfather of AI, Geoffrey Hinton, to Rishi Sunak’s AI advisor, industry leaders and experts everywhere are warning about AI’s mortal threat to our existence as a species. They are right about one thing: AI can be harmful. Facial recognition systems are already being used to prohibit possible protestors exercising fundamental rights. Automated fraud detectors are falsely cutting off thousands of people from much-needed welfare payments and surveillance tools are being used in the workplace to monitor workers’ productivity. Many of us might be shielded from the worst harms of AI. Wealth, social privilege or proximity to whiteness and capital mean that many are less likely to fall prey to tools of societal control and surveillance. As Virginia Eubanks puts it ‘many of us in the professional middle class only brush against [the invisible spider web of AI] briefly… We may have to pause a moment to extricate ourselves from its gummy grasp, but its impacts don’t linger.’ By contrast, it is well established that the worst harms of government decisions already fall hardest on those most marginalised. Let’s take the example of drugs policing and the disproportionate impact on communities of colour. Though the evidence shows that Black people use drugs no more, and possibly less, than white people, the police direct efforts to identify drug-related crimes towards communities of colour. As a consequence, the data then shows that communities of colour are more likely to be ‘hotpots’ for drugs. In this way, policing efforts to ‘identify’ the problem creates a problem in the eyes of the system, and the cycle of overpolicing continues. When you automate such processes, as with predictive policing tools based on racist and classist criminal justice data, these biases are further entrenched.

Two films kept coming to mind as I watched Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups: Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Andrei Tarkovsky's Mirror (1975). Fellini's film because the journey of Malick's protagonist, Rick (Christian Bale), through the decadence of Hollywood and Las Vegas echoes that of Marcello's (Marcello Mastroianni) explorations of Rome. Tarkovsky's because Malick's exploration of Rick's life exhibits a similar steadfast refusal to adhere to a strict linear narrative. Most of us go to movies to have stories told to us. Our lives are a web of stories, told to us by history and religion and science and society, and most explicitly by art. We tend to prefer the old linear progression of storytelling: beginning, middle, end, or the familiar five-act structure of situation, complication, crisis, struggle, and resolution. But artists tend to get weary of the straightforward approach; they like to mix things up, to find new ways of storytelling. The modernist novelists like Joyce and Woolf and Faulkner eschewed linearity, and filmmakers have tried to take a similar course. They have the advantage of working with images as well as words. So Malick, like Tarkovsky and Fellini and others, experiments with editing and montage to meld images with language and gesture to probe the psychological depths of human character and experience. The problem with experimentation is that experiments fail more often than they succeed. Some think that Knight of Cups is a successful experiment, but most critics and much of the film's audience seem to disagree, to judge from, for example, a 5.6 rating on IMDb. Knight of Cups spent two years in post-production and there are four credited film editors, which suggests that Malick over-reached himself. For me, what was lost in the process of making the film was a clarity of vision. Granted, the lives of human beings are messy, loose-ended things, but what do we depend on artists to do but try to make sense of them. I think Malick lost sight of his protagonist, Rick, in trying to interpret his life and loves through the film's odd amalgamation of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and the Major Arcana of the tarot pack and then overlaying it with a collage of images provided by Emmanuel Lubezki's camera. We glimpse Rick through filters, grasping for moments that will resolve into something substantial about him, his problems with his family and with women. And for all the casting of fine actors like Bale and Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman, the production negates their attempts to create characters. In fact, their starriness works against them: Instead of being drawn into the character of Rick or Nancy or Elizabeth, we're removed from them by the familiarity of the actor playing them. I understand what admirers of the film like Matt Zoller Seitz are saying when they proclaim, "The sheer freedom of it is intoxicating if you meet the film on its own level, and accept that it's unfinished, open-ended, by design, because it's at least partly concerned with the impossibility of imposing meaningful order on experience, whether through religion, occult symbolism, mass-produced images and stories, or family lore." But I wonder if that's enough to make an experiment successful. I came away from Knight of Cups knowing nothing more about its characters than I did before I met them.

The official statement, released on Sunday, revealed that the cause of death was determined through an autopsy conducted by the Government pathologist at Chiromo Mortuary. Two teachers rushed him to Kilungu Sub County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The father, who traveled from Isinya in Kajiado County, arrived at Kilungu around 6pm, only to be informed of the heartbreaking news. At that point, the student's body had already been taken to Kilungu Hospital mortuary. Contrary to initial speculation of excessive bullying, the autopsy results dispelled those concerns, revealing that the cause of Emmanuel Kirimi Kaimenyi's untimely death was a natural infection. The tragic story of students killed in a Murang'a house.

When Emmanuel Asande passed away at a town construction site, he was a third-year civil engineering student at Murang'a University of Science and Technology. When the tragedy struck on Monday, he had only been working as an industrial attaché at the doomed four-story building for two weeks. The tragedy claimed the life of Daniel Nkulet, a friend and fellow Third Year procurement student. To raise fees, Nkulet had been working irregular jobs. Due to a lack of funds, he had put off studying for a semester. On the other hand, another student who went by the name of Geoffrey Wachira was attending Moi University to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. According to his father, Lawrence King'ori, the deceased would return to school in September after a lengthy holiday break. After his internship at Murang'a District Hospital was over, he had allowed his son to work at the site to pay for his care. Wachira had only been working there two weeks. King'ori remarked, "It is such a blow to us as a family to lose a young man who had a promising future in front of him." According to Dickson Nyariki, vice chancellor of Murang'a University, the deaths of Asande and Nkulet were devastating for the school. He stated that the two were dedicated and had a bright future ahead of them, but the tragedy ended their lives. Nyariki stated, "It is a tremendous loss for us as an institution to lose such promising students in such a tragic manner." He continued, "We promise to support them in the preparations for their loved ones' burials and send our deepest condolences to the two families." The Murang'a University Students Association's Davis Kemboi said it was sad that the two people died while trying to pursue their dreams. Their lives were tragically cut short while they were out there trying to make ends meet and achieve their academic goals, he stated. Five people were killed when the four-story building gave way on Monday night. Four people were saved and are being treated at a number of different hospitals. Several government agencies have promised to take action against the building's owners as they investigate the incident. Maurice Aketch, chief executive of the National Construction Authority (NCA), disclosed that appropriate authorities had begun an investigation into the tragedy's cause. He stated, "We are very keen as NCA to ensure that all constructions in the country comply with all regulatory requirements and standards to maintain quality, safety, and the well-being of Kenyans and the environment." According to Samuel Charagu, secretary of the National Building Inspectorate, their job is to check for safety all buildings in the country, particularly those that are occupied. Charagu stated, "We have been traveling the country and have checked the status of buildings in 26 counties." He continued, "We have so far inspected 19,605 buildings across the country, of which 919, or 5%, have been found to be dangerous." He also mentioned that the NBI visited buildings after they had been occupied to inspect them. He added, "We work as a multi-sectoral team with the county governments, disaster management unit, and the police." Additionally, they coordinate with the police to evacuate occupants of unsafe buildings. Kenia, el país con más medallas en el Mundial, 324, allegacon Geoffrey Kamworor, el más laureado de los participantes con dos oros en 2015 y 2017 y el bronce en 2019. El triple campeón mundial de media maratón, fue atropellado por un auto en 2020. Pero corrió el maratón en 2h05:23 en Valencia. Y en enero pasado, ganó en enero el Campeonato de Cross de la Policía de Kenia, donde batió a Daniel Simiu Ebenyo, subcampeón de 10.000m de la Commonwealth. Ebenyo es candidato a las medallas como todos los keniatas: Kibiwott Kandie, subcampeón mundial y explusmarquista de 21K, Nicholas Korir, 4º en los 5.000m de Tokio, Sebastian Sawe, plusmarquista de la hora y 58:58 en 10K, y Emmanuel Kiprop Kipruto, especialista en cross. Etiopía -que ya tiene 275 medallas en el historial de los Mundiales de Cross- cuenta también con Berihu Aregawi, 4º en los 10.000m de Tokio y ganador de los trials etíopes para este campeonato en Sululta hace unas semanas, Tadese Worku, plusmarquista etíope de 10K y subcampeón mundial sub-20 de cross hace cuatro años, Getaneh Molla, destacado también en el selectivo etíope, Mogos Tuemay, campeón africano de 10.000m, y Hailemariyam Amare, campeón africano de 5.000m. Del resto sobresale Rodrigo Kwizera,  de Burundi, quien vive y compite habitualmente en España yo es el vigente campeón del circuito mundial del cross, y podría superar el 9º puesto de Thierry Ndikumwenayo en 2019, el mejor de siempre de Burundi. Since Malthus, overpopulation has always been one of the roads to dystopia, the breakdown of society and the imposition of authoritarian government. But lately, speculative fiction has focused on the opposite: infertility. It gives rise to the theocracy of Gideon in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. And it results in a police state in Alfonso Cuarón's remarkable film Children of Men, set in a dank dystopian London in the year 2027, a world in which human beings stopped bearing children 18 years earlier: i.e., in the year 2009 -- only three years after the film was made. The specificity of the date is reminiscent of the way George Orwell's 1984 serves as a commentary on the year in which it was published, 1948. In its treatment of the plight of immigrants and the racism that underlies it Children of Men has something like the prophetic core of the books by Orwell and Atwood, but it sidesteps a central question: How does the failure of humankind to reproduce precipitate the worldwide cataclysm that the movie presents us? Why are immigrants, in a world with a declining population and therefore less pressure on natural resources, a problem? Cuarón is indifferent to such questions, but he runs the risk of suggesting that the film promotes the extreme "pro-life" view, not only anti-abortion but also anti-contraception. Or is it simply that, as one character puts it, "a world without children's voices" is inevitably a terrible place? The lack of backstory seems to me a weakness in an otherwise extraordinary film, full of violent action and suspense, with some wizardly work by Oscar nominees cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and editors Cuarón and Alex Rodríguez. The way they handle the film's much-praised long-take sequences, aided by special effects to give the sense of complex action taking place in a single traveling shot, is exceptional. There are also fine performances by Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Clare-Hope Ashitey, and the inevitably wonderful Michael Caine.
