Harry Styles is a Mermaid

Disclaimer: I am sure I’m not the first to report and share these links and images. I thought people would find this interesting, so I’m sharing my foray down this rabbit hole. I’d welcome any additional links or thoughts related to Mermaids and the LGBTQ community.

In November 2014, Harry Styles had the image of a mermaid tattooed on his left forearm. The bare-chested siren joined multitudes of other nautical themed tattoos that litter his body. 

A few days after the new tat appeared, he responded to a question at a meet and greet. 

“I am a Mermaid,” he said. 

I started the research on this post when I saw the gif with his quote about being a mermaid. Rest below the cut.

I’m not going to tell you why he said he’s a mermaid. I don’t know what it means to him. I have no idea. Maybe he simply likes mermaids. Maybe he feels like it matches the themes of his and Louis’ other nautical tattoos. I can't pretend to know.

“Mermaid” as a theme, though, has a decades long association with the LGBTQ community. And I think that’s interesting in light of the imagery that Harry himself has shared and seems to connect to.

Like, that time he wore a shirt with a famous line from The Little Mermaid.

Or in 2019, when he dressed as Ariel for a Saturday Night Live photoshoot.

I’ve seen the Little Mermaid probably dozens of times. My child and I watched it a lot when she was growing up. And while I always knew it was an allegory for being different, I didn’t think about the deeper meaning as it relates to the LGBTQ community until more recently.

According to this article from the Smithsonian, 

The central story of The Little Mermaid is, of course, 16-year-old Ariel’s identity crisis. She feels constrained by her patriarchal mer-society and senses she doesn’t belong. She yearns for another world, apart from her own, where she can be free from the limits of her rigid culture and conservative family. Her body is under the water, but her heart and mind are on land with people. She leads a double life. She is, essentially, “in the closet” (as symbolized by her “cavern”—or closet—of human artifacts, where the character-building song “Part of Your World” takes place).

The Disney version was written by writer-producer-lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. 

The character of Ursula, though, is the real LGBTQ icon. “Conceived by Ashman, Ursula is based on the famous cross-dressing performer Divine, who was associated with the openly gay filmmaker John Waters. As scholar Laura Sells explained in a 1995 anthology of essays, Ursula’s “Poor Unfortunate Souls” song is essentially a drag show instructing the naive mermaid on how to attract Prince Eric (who is conspicuously uninterested in Ariel and most content at sea with his all-male crew and manservant Grimsby). “In Ursula’s drag scene,” Sells wrote, “Ariel learns that gender is performance; Ursula doesn’t simply symbolize woman, she performs woman.” (same source as above).

A gay man in 1980s America, Ashman had personal experience with the culture wars over “family values” and gay rights. The “Reagan Revolution” marked the arrival of the long-brewing marriage of the Republican Party with conservative Christians and included a platform that was unfriendly to gay rights, to say the least. President Reagan ignored the AIDS epidemic that swept the nation (refusing to appropriate any federal funds for research or treatment), and Republicans in general claimed the “gay plague” was God’s punishment for homosexuality. Ashman saw the film as an opportunity to advance a social message through the medium of “family entertainment.” The last thing Americans would expect from Disney was a critique of patriarchy, but sure enough, Ashman’s The Little Mermaid is a gutsy film about gender and identity—a far cry from the staid Disney catalog. Anyone who was around in 2015 knows about RBB/SBB. But if you didn’t, the Rainbow Bears (RBB/SBB, largely assumed to be created and curated by Harry and Louis) mentioned Divine on December 1, 2015. Just after they posted about her, Harry tweeted a lyric that alluded to Divine. See below.

There was a lot of speculation about Harry being potentially cast as Prince Eric in a live action version of the Little Mermaid. I’m not sure how serious those rumors were, but I can imagine based on all of this research, that he might have found the Prince wasn’t the character he related to most.

To go even further down the rabbit hole, go all the way back to the original story. The Hans Christian Anderson version has a tragic ending, that doesn’t end with the mermaid happily ever with the prince. There is some speculation that the story was an allegory for an unrequited love that Anderson had toward a straight acquaintance.

I also want to point out that Mermaids is a UK based charity organization, that “supports transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children and young people until their 20th birthday, as well as their families and professionals involved in their care.” About Mermaids - Mermaids (mermaidsuk.org.uk) https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/about-us/

All of this could be coincident to the true purpose behind what Harry’s tattoo means to him. We will likely never know its exact meaning to him. 

But as time passes, and we see Harry waving various LGBTQ flags and hinting at being in the community himself, I think it might bear remembering that he said he WAS a mermaid. And I think that’s beautiful, Harry.

Kiff Review

Kiff is a musical comedy animated series by Lucy Heavens and Nic Smal. They are known for their work in the animation industry, either script writing, storyboarding, or voice acting. This post will have spoilers.

Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the twenty-seventh article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on March 27, 2023.

The plot of Kiff focuses on a young flying squirrel named Kiff Chatterley (voiced by Kimiko Glenn), who is friends with a mellow bunny named Barry Buns (H. Michael Croner) in a magical land, within the mountains, known as Table Town. Both go on adventures in and around the town.

Like other Disney series airing this year, Kiff is aimed at kids and families. This is clear from the format, similar to many episodes of Amphibia, Milo Murphy's Law, and Phineas and Ferb. Each 22-minute episode is divided into two 11-minute segments. In typical Disney fashion, there is a musical number in almost every episode.

Apart from the animating powerhouse of Disney Television Animation, a well-known animation studio, Titmouse, is producing the series. The same studio is known for series such as Cleopatra in Space, Star Trek: Lower Decks, The Midnight Gospel, Q-Force, Inside Job, Pantheon, My Dad the Bounty Hunter,  The Legend of Vox Machina, Fairfax, and Chicago Party Aunt.

Many of the voice actors in Kiff are well-experienced. Glenn previously voiced Paperstar in Carmen Sandiego, Katherine-Alice in Welcome to the Wayne, Tomiko in Elena of Avalor, and Nomi in Dogs in Space, to name a few roles. Deedee Magno Hall, who voices Deer Teacher in the series, is best known for voicing Pearl in Steven Universe. Furthermore, James Monroe Iglehart and Lauren Ash, who voice Kiff's parents, prominently voiced characters in series such as Tangled, Helluva Boss, Elena of Avalor, and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

Keen listeners might recognize Rachel House, voice of Barry's mother, or Nichole Sakura, voice of Barry's sister. Both had prominent voice roles in Moana and OK K.O.!: Let's Be Heroes. Personally, I was familiar with voice actors Katie Crown and Rhys Darby because they voiced characters in Cleopatra in Space. The former also voiced Ivy in Amphibia. Furthermore, Darby voiced a variety of characters in Milo Murphy's Law, We Bare Bears, Welcome to the Wayne, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and Infinity Train. It was great to hear Vella Vowell, who voices Candle Fox, again. I remembered her impressive voice acting as Princess Mermista in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and as the No Tattoo Barista (which later turned into a CBD Monster) in the lesser-known Magical Girl Friendship Squad.

Kiff snagged the well-regarded Eric Bauza and Tom Kenny. From my years of watching animated series, I was familiar with Bauza as Scoops in Ollie & Scoops, as well as Kenny for two roles: Ice King in Adventure Time and Yancy Fry in Futurama. In this series, Bauza voices Reggie and a scrupulous TV producer named Roy Fox, while Kenny voices multiple characters in the series. A stand-up comedian named Josh Johnson also voices Barry's brother, Harry.

The show's animation is expressive and colorful. However, it pales in comparison to Amphibia, The Owl House, or Adventure Time. In some ways, Phineas and Ferb is put together better, as is Milo Murphy's Law. All in all, the show is a bit funny, but not laugh-out-loud funny. Drama is more a strong suit for the series than comedy.

The first twelve episodes of the series are double-episodes. They introduce viewers to the characters, allowing you to get a feeling for their lives. More than anything, they make it clear that Kiff is not serialized like Steven Universe, Tangled, or Milo Murphy's Law (especially the second season). Instead, each episode seems in its own world, without being connected to another. If some rumors are correct about upcoming Hailey's On It! and Iwaju, it appears that Disney series are moving in this direction. This is evidenced by the fact that the recently aired Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur uses serialized storytelling.

More than anything, it is clear that the series is not serialized similar to Steven Universe, Tangled, or Milo Murphy's Law (especially the second season). Instead, each of the episodes seems in its own world, without being connected to one another. If some rumors are correct, it appears that Disney series are moving in this direction. However, the recently aired Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur uses serialized storytelling as does the upcoming Hailey's On It! and Iwaju, if reports are correct.

Kiff has some elements reminding me of the Futurama episode openings, like fake adverts at the beginning of each episode. At the same time, the series is different than what has come before since the show creators, Heavens and Smal, who voice characters in the series, are from Cape Town, South Africa. As a result, their life-stories are undoubtedly integrated into the series itself. Furthermore, the show's directors include animators for Black Dynamite, 6Teen, and Amphibia, with this career experience enhancing the show even more.

The series emphasizes the importance of acceptance, friendship, self-worth, and notoriety. The latter is shown in the extreme by Roy Fox, who makes trashy reality shows in order to profit from people's misery. In a manner similar to the focus on education in many anime series, Kiff seems to imply that education is important to achieving your dreams and that school shouldn't be skipped, no matter what. This stands diametrically opposed to what is shown in Birdie Wing: Eve, one of the show's protagonists, is a terrible student, but remains at the premiere golf academy because she is a sports star.

There are many other themes focused in Kiff. For instance, the episode "Career Day", when Kiff and Barry get a part-time job at city hall, implies that mass records destruction is fine as long as you cut through the "red tape". This contrasts with commentary about overly technical bureaucracy in Hilda and Futurama, to name two series. Such a negative theme in "Career Day" is offset by episodes which accentuate family togetherness and honesty.

As a person who has reviewed media with libraries and librarians in pop culture since July 2020, and with a MLIS degree, it should be no surprise one of my favorite episodes of Kiff was "Club Book". In he episode, Kiff learns the value of quietness in the library after turning the library into a club scene. I thought it was interesting that the librarian, voiced by Aparna Nancherla, is made more relatable than most. Her character, Miss Moufflé, somewhat bucking stereotypes, while reinforcing them at the same time, as she shushes people but also likes souffles.

Similar to other series, the value of libraries as a place of knowledge and learning is affirmed in Kiff. In some ways, the episode reminded me of the "Quiet Riot" episode of The Replacements, in which the show's protagonist, Todd, causes the shushing librarian in charge of the school library replaced by a rockstar. However, he later regrets his decision, resulting in the original librarian returning to her job.

Currently, Kiff is almost half-way through its series order of 30 episodes. It is hard to know where the series will go from here. Even so. I am more optimistic about this series than Hamster & Gretel, which has fallen flat, despite the fact that Dan Povenmire is the show's creator. Instead, the series has episodes somewhat mimicking absurdity and, even hilarity (to an extent), which are present in Phineas and Ferb. The latter, in fact, was recently renewed for more two seasons.

Even so, Kiff will probably never measure-up to the strength of four-season animated magical comedy powerhouse of Phineas and Ferb, a series even mentioned in an episode of Better Things, a comedy-drama by Pamela Adlon, who voiced some characters in the series. Despite this, Kiff will chart its own path, perhaps different than what has come before. After all, both creators are said to be a "brilliant creative team".

Although Disney has recently removed release dates from the upcoming Tiana and Moana series, clearly Kiff is part of a trend by the company to feature more diverse series. This year is bound to bring series such as Iwáju and Hailey's On It!, while there are others in production such as Cookies & Milk and Primos.

It is further possible that Disney is producing Molly Ostertag's Neon Galaxy, a series reportedly about a trans princess. In any case, diverse series are on the horizon for Disney, especially more than HBO Max, a network which has been struggling to find its corporate identity since David Zaslav became CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate. It is said that the streaming service has Iyanu: Child of Wonder and Lumberjanes in production.

The first 12 episodes of Kiff are currently airing on Disney+ and all twelve episodes have aired on the Disney Channel. Four new episodes will air on the Disney Channel on April 1st and later be added on Disney+.

So me @jaerie @haztobegood went to get tattoos at Great Lakes Tattoos and Brandon, my tattoo artist, asked what we were doing today and I told him we were in the city to see a Louis Tomlinson concert. He was like, "oh cool cool." Clearly not really knowing who I was talking about. Just kept chatting. Then he asked how we found the shop if we'd never been tattooed there before and I was like...well...this is where Louis got a tattoo.

He pushed back away from me and said, "LOUIS TOMLINSON!! LOUIS TOMLINSON I KNOW WHO THAT IS. That shit was insane!" Another artist heard him and was like "Louis Tomlinson?? We had to turn the phones off for a week after he came in!" And Brandon said, "I wasn't even there and I woke up to THOUSANDS of DMs on Instagram." The other artist said people from all over the world were calling the shop. I was cry laughing at this point and Brandon is laughing. A THIRD artist came over to say it was completely wild for a while after he came in. And I apologized on behalf of Louies everywhere a;sldjkfsa and that maybe it would have been slightly less wild had he not got the tattoo on his ass and posted pics of it. We were both wiping away tears and he was like, "it was obnoxious at the time but it's fucking hilarious looking back on it. Eric (that's the one who did Louis' tattoo) has a fan page and someone wrote a song about him!"

Anyway, it was both hilarious and embarrassing lol and I did not expect to cry laugh while getting my first tattoo 😆

I was smiling sleepily as I locked up the Copper Penny behind me. I had told Harry to go home to his pregnant wife and three kids and I would lock up behind everyone. Peter lingered next to me, inadvertently making me feel safe with his lurking frame near me.

“Goodnight, sisters!” I called out as I set the alarm before locking the door behind me. “The bar was a church back in the early nineteen hundreds, but a devastating fire killed most who lived under the house of the lord. It’s said a group of ghostly nuns haunt the bar since then,” I explained, letting out a yawn as I shouldered my backpack. “Goodness me, I’m wiped.”

 Peter scooped me into his arms and began to walk over to where he had parked his car. I drifted off into a half awake half asleep state of mind as I curled myself into his chest, only waking when he placed me into the passenger seat and was buckling me in. He tugged the seatbelt, making sure it was it was tight before bending and kissing my stomach.

 “I love you,” he murmured before straightening up and closing the door. He rounded the car before getting into the driver’s seat and pulling away from the public library parking lot. I didn’t know who he was talking to- me or little girl growing safe and warm in my womb, but it still made me smile.

 “Hey sweetheart, I’m going to view a property in Brooklyn Heights tomorrow,” he told me. “It’s an eight acre lot, set in the middle of Blueberry Forest, right on Meadowlark Lake. It seems like it’ll be a perfect place to build a little house for us.”

 “Peter, eight acres is a bit excessive, if you ask me,” I mumbled, cracking my eyes open. “What are you planning?”

 “I was thinking maybe a three bedroom house for us and a bunch of small guesthouses for when our families come over,” he confessed his plans. “I know I should’ve involved you, but I’m just so excited for the future.”

 “How long do you think it’ll take to build everything?” I asked, wiggling around as I made myself comfortable.

 “I’m estimating about twelve weeks,” he shrugged. “Give or take.”

 “How much money are we looking at spending?” was my next question.

 “Hey now, none of that,” he frowned, reaching across to grab my hand. “It’s my project, I’m paying for it.” He pulled my hand up to kiss the back of it. “Don’t worry about money.”

 “Sorry,” I muttered. “I cut my parents completely out of my life earlier this year- I hadn’t had an actual conversation with them in over ten years, I had to literally teach myself and my two little sisters to adult. We grew up extremely sheltered after what happened with Eric. I had to clip coupons for grocery shopping, and even then, we still didn’t have enough to eat sometimes.”

 I could tell Peter was angry as he gripped the steering wheel so tight his tattooed knuckles turned white. He forced a deep inhale of breath in through his nose, holding it for a few seconds before releasing it.

 “I didn’t want to cut daddy out of my life, but I honestly had no choice,” I muttered. “Wherever he goes, mom is close behind, always.”

 “You never told me what they did for a living,” he changed the subject somewhat.

 “Well, my daddy is Jonathan Bradley, the lawyer,” I said. “Mom is Martha Bradley and is a Mary Kay consultant. Daddy would let us triplets get away with anything, but his first love is always his law firm. He’s addicted to his work- every spare second he has he has he spends it in his office. Mom had to force him to take my sisters and I to father daughter dances in grade school, and even then, he would spend the entire night on his phone.” I snorted, shaking my head. “Mom is a control freak. She wanted to send me away to a fancy Ivy League school for college and was disappointed when I got a full ride scholarship to Julliard’s. She tried to set me up on dates with her friend’s sons and pitched a fit when I came out as bisexual my junior year of high school. The final straw came when I got wind of a wedding- she ‘arranged’ me to marry Kody Williams, even though he had been harassing me for years. I just didn’t show up to the wedding, and she simply lost out on a lot of money.”

 “Fucking Christ…” Peter groaned. “I’m so sorry, sweetheart.”

 “I think she’s disappointed that she didn’t get the daughter that she always wanted,” I shrugged. “I haven’t even told her little girl’s gender because she pitched yet another fit when I told her that I was acting as a surrogate. She wanted me to marry and start popping out the grandkids. All that happened in March of this year, so… yeah, pretty recently.”

 “I’m so sorry sweetheart,” he said as he pulled into the apartment parking lot. “Do you want me to come up?” I hummed out a yes, unbuckling the seatbelt as he came around to open the door for me. I swung my legs out and made to get out only to find myself in his arms yet again.

 “Daddy lets us stay in his apartment for free, he just asks that we don’t bring home anyone who’d make him bring out the family shotgun,” I muttered, curling myself into his arms as he carried me up to the third floor to the apartment that I shared with Jackie and Sammi. I handed him the key to the front door and he opened the door before setting me down.

 “Gramercy, Peter,” I smiled, kissing my fist and bumping it against his lips.

 “What was that?” he asked me with an amused smile.

 “A kiss,” I explained. “Because you’re such a giant.”

 “I have a better idea, sweetheart.” He bent down and picked me up before carrying me over to the kitchen counter, where he set me down and leaned in. “Sweetheart, may I…?”

 I only smiled before leaning the rest of the way and capturing his lips in a sweet kiss.

The Industry

It has more features than tracks. This has been a long time in the making. I had some trouble getting the features through my distributor but distrokid came through for me. The beats and major feature production comes from Anno Domini. The entire project was mixed and mastered by Keyano and the cover art is by Gigzlogo from Fiverr.

This album is called “The Industry” because it features many artists, big and small, from the music industry while also being about “The industry” as in the economy. I did the best I could with the limited resources I have. I would like to thank Anno Domini for this opportunity and for make this a dream come true and Thank you to all the featured artist.

90% of the CO2 in the atmosphere over the last 10 years came from 3 products, gas, oil and coal. This is who I’m referring to when I say “Big Carbon.” I was gonna just say “big oil” but it’s more than just big oil and saying “carbon” is really focusing on the problem.

The album approaches sociological problems and by the middle I bring in my personal perspective. I firmly believe we have a lot of the problems we do because religion which distorts zealots worldveiw. Thinking being gay is wrong, the earth is only 6 thousand years old, or the rapture is gonna happen really affects how people perceive and affect the world, and since we live in a democracy, political and societal outcomes as well. I believe inaccuracy in thinking comes from the distorted worldview of religion, and in America that means chirstianity. This means it’s fundamental to attack followers reality at it’s core because it is the basis in which they project their actions. I just hope Kurupt isn’t a devote christian or he might be upset. 

I do not condone violence peroid, let alone against congress members, although I think they basically deserve it. With that said, I tried showing Mitch McConnell as little respect as possible. You know, I’m human too and between his policies, greed, and lust for power representing an abhorrent party that he has enabled to regress the nation, it’s not hard to hate him, and as an artist I’m just tapping into that very real sentiment. People will cheer when he dies like they will Dick Cheney or how they did Harry Kissenger. The world would be a better place if you off’d yourself Mitch. Not because your death would solve our problems, but because your influence on power needs to end. Honestly, I don’t like Mitt Romney, but I took a different approach and said people should be like him because he’s actually retiring. Listen, I know the replacements might be worse, but they could also be way better. I would be satisfied with a maximum age requirement if we couldn’t get term limits. 

This release was going to be 12 tracks long, not 10. I had the hardest time getting this published. I went through CDbaby and it got rejected. I published it without the KRS-One or Gucci Mane feature track. After much deliberation, I have since went through distrokid to publish the “Heavy Hitters” EP which has the Krs, Gucci, and a snoop dogg feature that was supposed to be on the “Westside Connection” album but got rejected by CDbaby as well.
