To Show Thankfulness
“One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked Him—and he was a Samaritan.” Luke 17:15-16NIV
When we awake in the morning, are we thankful? Actually, what are we thankful for? Lynde Langdon wrote in ‘World’ January 2021, about Eric Schwam, a Jewish refugee, who fled from Austria to France during WWII. The town that hid him and over 2000 other refugees from the Nazi Germans received two million euros from Schwam’ estate. This act displayed great gratitude.
Lou worked for years for a thankless company. He worked hard to complete the work correctly. In return, they thanked him by giving him broken down equipment to repair. Then they pulled that newly repaired piece of equipment off of his job and sent it to one of the other General Foremen to elevate their supervisory bonuses. All of these equipment repairs docked Lou’s annual bonus by at least a hundred thousand dollars across the span of those many years. My husband knew what God felt like, being cheated, stolen from and never appreciated.
The Israelites failed to be a thankful people. Without being grateful they were easily lured into idol worship. In our text, nine lepers were Israelites. They took off to the temple to show they were healed and be received back into society again. “Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Luke 17:17-18NIV Number ten was a foreigner. But he rushed back to show thankfulness.
Some believe this “foreigner” was saved by Jesus’ salvation plan. Not sure how that idea would work. But I do believe that the missing appendages, ate off by leprosy, were totally restored, made whole; replaced by fresh, healthy new parts. I believe this is backed up by the Verse 19 Amplified Bible Classic— “And He said to him, Get up and go on your way. Your faith (your trust and confidence that spring from your belief in God) has RESTORED YOU TO HEALTH.” (emphasis mine.).
God cherishes gratitude. Apostle Paul taught in 1Thessalonians 5:18; Ephesians 5:20; 2Corinthians 4:15-16; 2Thessalonians 1:3.
Mother taught us to be thankful that God is God and big enough to reduce us. Her feeble old hands would raise in praise and thanksgiving multiple times daily. Perhaps that was the reason Mom regularly saw a 24 hour turn around on answers to prayer. She’d pray —boom— the answer was there. Many people asked her to pray because of the swift results. Crazy part was— it was available to them, to us— if we would foster the attitude of gratitude and praise to our Lord.
Will you throw yourself at the feet of Jesus in gratitude? Are you to do more than a single thank you? It’s your choice. You choose.
LET’S PRAY: LORD God forgive us for taking you for granted, for cheating You out of the praise and thanksgiving You deserve. Call our hearts to remembrance continually that You are worthy of all praise and all thanksgiving that we can muster until our characters are changed to immediate thanksgiving, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Eric Schwam Honors Le Chambon-sur-Lignon’s History of Generosity
In 1943, Eric Schwam, his parents, and his grandmother arrived in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, a very small town in south-east France, as refugees. Originally from Vienna, the Jewish family were removed from Austria by the Nazis and held in an internment camp in Rivesaltes until 1942. They, along with hundreds of other Jewish refugees, were sheltered by the town’s citizens through the rest of WWII,…
