Persephone was picking flowers: roses, crocus, and beautiful violets up and down the soft meadow. […] And the earth, full of roads leading every which way, opened up under her.
— Homer, Homeric hymn to Demeter (trans. Gregory Nagy)
Bertha stands there and watches him go. Then she turns around, but in that moment Caligula appears as if from the earth.
— Torment (1944), script by Ingmar Bergman (my translation)

When I Went to the Film - D.H. Lawrence - recited by Jeremy Irons
When I Went to the Film - D.H. Lawrence
When I went to the film and saw all the black-and-white feelings that nobody felt,
And heard the audience sighing and sobbing with all the emotions they none of them felt,
And saw them cuddling with rising passions they none of them for a moment felt,
And caught them moaning from close-up kisses, black-and-white kisses that could not be felt,
It was like being in heaven, which I am sure has a white atmosphere
Upon which shadows of people, pure personalities
Are cast in black and white, and move
In flat ecstasy, supremely unfelt
And heavenly.

Also, if I were going to double bill Road to Paradise with another movie it’d be A Woman’s Face (1938.) Not only because of the con woman angle but also in the way that they make you sympathize with their seemingly hardened heroines. In large part due to the performances of Loretta Young and Ingrid Bergman.
(ETA: Warning, Road to Paradise has a silly cop-out of an ending though.)

EverydayArsonist’s Pikmin Headcanons: Part II: The Characters
Olimar Headcanons:
•Cis Male
•Demisexual Biromantic
•39 in Pikmin 1 & 2, 40 in Pikmin 3, and 43 in Pikmin 4 (in this AU)….
•Has worked for Hocotate Freight since he was 24
•Space Pirates fear him
•He sees Louie more like a nephew figure than a son, but still deeply cares about him.
•He thinks that The President is irredeemable and lazy.
•Alph looks up to him, and Olimar can tell that he’s a natural-born leader.
•His respect for Charlie starts off relatively low, but does slowly grow.
•Wishes he could help Brittany overcome her problems, but thinks the task it better suited to someone who knows her better.
Louie Headcanons:
•Cis Male
•Demisexual
•19 in Pikmin 2, 20 in Pikmin 3, and 23 in Pikmin 4
•Regrets the Golden Pikpik Carrots Incident , the Titan Dweevil Incident, and the Ancient Sidehound Incident.
•One quarter Koppaite on his Dad’s side.
•Eating habits are actually completely separate and a result of his grandmother’s unintelligent parenting practice, but he does often lose weight when not eating food high in Vitamin U (it’s just called vitamin u in this au okay?)
•His mom died when he was 7 months old.
•His deadbeat dad who lives on Koppai now sends him a yearly message about the life insurance that he is technically owed
•Louie has never paid him back, and his father threatens legal action but never follows through.
•Wishes Olimar was his dad, but often acts more like a brother around him.
•Wants The President to either give him a raise, quit, or drop dead. These feelings either exist simultaneously with eachother or on their own depending on the situation.
•Confides in Alph, claiming him to be trustworthy. Doesn’t know why.
•Thinks Charlie would be a great guest on his cooking show (that doesn’t exist)
•Originally has a fierce rivalry with Brittany, but after overcoming it, they become The Duo Ever.
President Headcanons:
•Cis Man
•Straight
•45 in Pikmin 1 and 2, 47 in Pikmin 3, and 50 in Pikmin 4
•From Pikmin 1 to Pikmin 3, his legal name is “The President of Hocotate Freight”.
•Had to go back to get the ship instead of Olimar after Pikmin 3 and decided to never go there again to avoid losing more money on ships and/or employees.
•Just let the company go bankrupt again and left after Pikmin 3
•Changed his legal name to Erik
•Went back to PNF-404 on vacation (by complete accident) during Pikmin 4
•Respects Olimar ever since Pikmin 2
•Fears Louie ever since Pikmin 2.
•Doesn’t know the Koppaites.
Alph Headcanons:
•AMAB He/They user.
•Gay
•18 in Pikmin 3 (Koppai’s government is ruthless), and 21 in Pikmin 4.
•Has an intense rivalry with Yorke.
•He’s idolized Charlie for a long time, and respected Brittany for her research.
•They sees Olimar as a fatherly figure in his life, much like how he sees his grandfather and unsurprisingly, his father.
•His relationship with Louie is complicated, as Louie mostly opens up to Alph about his problems, explaining how he feels that Alph is trustworthy. Alph does his best to be the trustworthy friend Louie sees him as.
•Ever since meeting Charlie, they’ve seen him less as a heroic idol and more as That Friend.
•Tries to get Brittany to stop being so angry all the time and fails miserably. Eventually becomes pretty close with her.
Charlie Headcanons:
•Cis Male
•Bisexual
•34 in Pikmin 3, 37 in Pikmin 4.
•Was drafted into the Koppai-Ooji war at 27, but didn’t actually fight, instead dodging the draft by setting up a treasure-hunting business with Don Bergman, his then-partner. When the war ended three years later, he began to search for treasure across the galaxy. Eventually, he and Don Bergman go their separate ways for reasons Charlie doesn’t disclose.
•Thinks Olimar is a better leader than he ever will be (and he’s right)
•Doesn’t like Louie.
•Thinks Alph is more talented than he gives himself credit for.
•Likes Brittany, but is pretty sure she’s into women. And she’s kind of a jerk anyways.
Brittany Headcanons:
•Cis Woman
•Lesbian Egg in Pikmin 3, Fully out in Pikmin 4.
•22 in Pikmin 3, 25 in Pikmin 4.
•She has had a long history with her research. One of the few Koppaite researchers determined to grow plants on Koppai, she stared her research back in highschool with a team of her friends. Over time, they started growing further apart as they tried to create better soil, better fertilizer, and larger plants. Slowly, Brittany became absorbed in her work to the point where she began pushing everyone around her away, becoming increasingly irritable and selfish, trapped in her determination to solve the food crisis.
•Thinks everyone idolizes Olimar too much.
•Starts off despising Louie, until he finally gets her to open up, and they become The Duo Ever.
•Wants Alph to be more confident, but can’t reach out to him.
•Goes from hating Charlie to just being annoyed by him.
Anyways those are all the major characters I’ll probably rant more about minor ones later bye

Watched the series Young Royals
I am not the ‘target audience’ for this teen show, being a well-aged history nerd, but I clicked on it anyway to get a glimpse of how media portray the monarchy these days.
I quickly got pulled in, not so much by the story itself, but by the Bergman-like cinematography, the well-crafted dialogue (some of it wrecked in translation), the attention to details, and…..how well the fiction is reflecting real world historic places, events and people. It is as if the writers set out to do a mash-up of findings in the history books from 1650 to 1850.
In the following, I will share some of the historical events that possibly inspired the fiction and where some of the places’ and the characters’ names might have come from.  Here is a handful of headlines after my first watch - some of which may spark your curiosity.
Hill(er)ska Boarding School  1830 - 1846.  Yes, it did exist and Hillerska is nicely modelled after the original school.
11 Royal Dynasties (or Houses) reigning from year 970 until today and the four non-straight monarchs, of which four inspired the YR fictional world
The real Prince Erik was described by as a notably handsome prince, but unfortunately he died in his twenties, unmarried. His brother prince Vilhelm lived a long life.
August  -  “the prince everyone has forgotten” or “the monarchy’s botched backup plan”- from a book I am currently reading.
A gay king went to a masquerade ball, but did not make it back. Was there perhaps a connection to August? Yes, his dad was up to no good.
Queen Kristina dear, you were the only child.  How you plotted and deceived to make sure the monarchy would survive. It must have been tricky when you found it unthinkable to produce an heir and so boldly declared this fact in front of the Royal Council.
I will start with the Boarding School:
There are only two national boarding schools in operation today. One is located “in the woods” 3,5 hours from Stockholm. The other is located in the old capital (from year 990 to 1430) of Sigtuna only 30 minutes away. Both are very upscale and have had various royalties attending over the years. The boarding fee currently ranges between $25-45k / year. Tuition is of course free of charge as mandated by law. The schools have to accept non-boarders if capacity is available.
It is a bit strange why the fictional school is set up to look quite mundane, almost like any public school. Could it be that the show had such a low budget, never intended as an internationally viewed show? Or is it an artistic choice? By portraying the school environment as ordinary, the story may have a better chance of taking center stage.  We see the same thing when it comes to portraying the Royals. A rather small privately owned estate located hours from Stockholm poses as the royal castle and their entourage is very limited.   It is like they have chosen to portray a mini lackluster universe.
The real world Hillerska was named Hillska Skolan, for upper class boys in grades up to university level had about 80 students.  It started 1830 and was located just south of Stockholm by a lake. The area is now incorporated in Stockholm City. Hillska is named after Mr Rowland Hill and modelled after his school, located outside Birmingham, England. Great emphasis was placed on physical fitness and sports, such as fencing, horseback riding, sailing and above all rowing. The rule setting and disciplinary system was maintained by the students themselves through an elected prefect. The school started off successfully. Crown Prince Oscar held a speech and handed out rewards in 1832 lending legitimacy to the newly founded school. The curriculum was tough with 45 hours of scheduled tuition time per week. Besides Swedish, also English, French, German, Greek and Latin were mandatory subjects at quite early age.
The number of students started declining after an accident 1836, when a 16 year old boy was accidentally shot to death. A revision of perilous school activities were immediately carried out, resulting in a ban of any guns or gun powder, sailing, horseback riding (an equestrian accident of national royal magnitude 25 year earlier was still fresh in mind), and rowing. Reinstatement of rowing was, however, quickly made at the request of the Dean. Fencing was deemed safe. Go figure….
Unfortunately, the scandal did not wash off easily and student numbers kept declining. The school had to close 10 years later. (Source is a19th century 66 page alumni chronicle- fascinating reading)
There is no documentation of hazing or initiations at Hillska, but it likely existed, considering the extensive student hierarchy and autonomy. And yes, the spit cup is a real thing from one of the two current schools.

Harriet Andersson in Summer With Monika (Ingmar Bergman, 1953)
Cast: Harriet Andersson, Lars Ekborg, Dagmar Ebbeson, Åke Fridell, Naemi Briese, Åke Grönberg, Sigge Fürst. Screenplay: Ingmar Bergman, Per Anders Fogelström, based on a novel by Fogelström. Cinematography: Gunnar Fischer. Production design: P.A. Lundgren. Film editing: Tage Holmberg, Gösta Lewin. Music: Erik Nordgren.
This early Bergman film, coming before the trifecta of Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), The Seventh Seal (1957), and Wild Strawberries (1957) established his reputation as a director, got its first exposure in the United States in 1955 when an enterprising distributor purchased the rights, cut it by a third, and released it as Monika, the Story of a Bad Girl, with a publicity campaign centered on Harriet Andersson's nude scene. Swedish distributors were not above exploiting Andersson either, but Bergman's adaptation with Per Anders Fogelström of Fogelström's novel, is anything but a naughty sexcapade. It's a film about disaffected youth: Monika and Harry (Lars Ekborg) are in their late teens and trapped in boring jobs. Monika works at a produce store where she is sexually harassed by the male employees, and Harry, a packer and delivery boy in a store that deals in pottery and glassware, is constantly being scolded for being late and lazy. Harry wants to study to be an engineer, but he has to look after his father, who is an invalid. His mother died when he was 8, and he tells Monika that he has always felt alone. Monika is anything but alone: Her father is abusive and her mother barely tends to Monika's noisy young siblings. So when Harry's father goes into a hospital, Monika persuades Harry to run away with her. They steal his father's boat and sail away from Stockholm to the countryside, beautifully filmed by Gunnar Fischer. Their idyll is eventually cut short by their lack of money and Monika's pregnancy. The problem with the film is that a rather puritanical tone eventually seeps in, making Monika the focus of a moral condescension that Bergman would outgrow as his career progressed.
