My great grandfather “Bud” Wilbur gave his son Jack an Erector Set one Christmas then took it back the same day. The Erector Set was a children’s toy made of metal pieces that allowed kids to build various model structures like bridges and poorly made bridges. Before video games, children had very few choices for entertainment: marbles, Erector Sets, or becoming a Peeping Tom. Those were the choices. My grandpa Jack was going to be an engineer like his father, and to seal his fate, great grandpa Bud bought him the tools to try his hand at building. Bud, seeing the pieces scattered on the floor must have thought “pearls before swine” while having his eureka moment. Using the toy he had bought his son, he built a model of what he called The Simultaneous Calculator, what the American papers in 1937 called “Robot-Einstein,” and what the Japanese dubbed “The Wilbur Machine.”
He didn’t build the first calculator. I believe that honor technically belongs to the Mesopotamians who made the first abacus. Nor did the calculator conceptually resemble the digital computing systems we have now that employ ones and zeros and a lot of electricity. The Wilbur Machine was an analog computing system with pulleys and brass bars that solved 9 equations simultaneously (or 9x9 systems according to an MIT grad’s thesis that I can only comprehend up to page 4). Math equations that once took a full day to solve now took roughly 1-3 hours. It sped up the production of large structures, power grids, and for one country it seems, planes. It was a big advancement in 1936-37, an advancement that was eclipsed by better smaller machines soon after. In the United States, that is. In Japan, a 3x3 system Wilbur Machine was replicated in the late 30s and a fully functioning 9x9 calculator was completed in 1944 at the Tokyo Imperial University’s Aviation Laboratory.
You read that correctly. My great-grandfather Bud Wilbur built a machine that was stolen by an Axis power right before World War II. Japan continued to use the machine until the war’s end. So, uh…sorry about that? It wasn’t Bud’s intention.

Hi!
I wanted to know how will cookies react to see reader at a carnival that has their own booth! Not just any booth though, it's where you spin a wheel that has things like hug, pat, and the last one? Kiss (not on the lips or anything, just on the forehead or cheek).
I apologize if this is kinda weird, I just been having this in my mind lately.
Seize the Spin
It was a good day at the carnival, rides fully operational and entertaining the guests, the weather was good enough to not have to worry about any potential early closures, and the booths that line up within the carnival providing various goods to the visitors.
You had opened your booth after spending the last few days preparing knitted clothes, baked goods, drinks, and various items you’ve collected on your travels for sale. Your fellow booth cookies were taken aback by how packed your booth was with cookies wanting to buy things from you.
You were making bank from the many sales, coins you planned to help fix up your home, restock your supplies, and then donating the rest to charities where young cookies would benefit from the help. You were content on keeping this routine until the cookie, an Affogato Disciple, that had just bought from you spoke up.
“I-I’m actually quite the fan of you, Y/N Cookie. If it’s alright with you…can I get a hug?”
Well, who were you to deny a simple request? You made your way around the booth counter and enveloped the disciple in a hug. She sighed in content as she could feel the warmth emanating from you. Affogato, once again, was right~
“Hey! That cookie is hugging Y/N!”
“They get a hug, but not me?!”
“I wonder if they can pat my head…”
“I wouldn’t mind a kiss on the forehead!”
Having so many eyes on you made the nonexistent hairs on the back of your neck stand up as you bid the goofy giggling disciple farewell as you hurried back behind your counter! You chuckled awkwardly with your hands in front of you as various cookies wanted any form of affection from you, whatever it was and what you were offering, they wanted it.
“I’ll buy out this whole booth if I have to, just lemme have a hug from ya, Y/N Cookie!”
W-who said that-
“Goooood afternoon, everyone! This is Reporter Cookie, coming live from the annual carnival! It looks like many cookies are gathering around this booth, the crowd is so packed there’s little wiggle room! Sources say that the cookie that runs this booth is none other then the widely known Y/N Cookie!”
“Not a surprise, their exploits since coming to town has netted them pretty big in the popularity charts! Donating to charity, lending a helping hand to all cookies, taking on many jobs that benefit others, and also having a pleasant aroma, it’s no wonder that cookies are gathering around to have the chance to gain affection from them, I know I do! Now move out of the way you all, this is for the sake of reporting!”
This was getting out of hand fast, you had to come up with something. You didn’t want to turn them all away, but you disliked how rambunctious the crowd was getting! You didn’t want a brawl happening at carnival square….
Eureka! You pulled out a picker wheel with 3 sections to it, reading “Hug”, “Pat”, and “Kiss” (on the forehead/cheek of course). If cookies made a purchase at your booth, they get to spin the wheel and try their luck! It’s win-win!
And since Reporter Cookie insisted, you allowed her a spin. She landed on Kiss. You kissed her cheek as she giggled with her face red. Her camera crew wanted a try, so they each spun with a variety of hugs, pats, and kisses given. They all stepped away from the booth with more brightened looks to them.
“If you want to try your luck with Y/N Cookie, then come on down to the local carnival and give it a spin!”
Of course, with a large event like this with many kinds of cookies coming to your booth, some cookies had offered to be your bodyguards in the event some cookies with masked intentions tried getting to you. Madeleine and Pistachio Cookies had taken up the opportunity to stand by your booth, keeping a keen eye on the cookies that came by, moving them along if they’ve overstayed their welcome. Of course, they got to spin the wheel, Madeleine joyous to have received a kiss on the cheek from you while Pistachio received a hug, the warmth from it was enough to crumble her defenses as she felt her cheeks grow warm.
Mustard Cookie pretended to not enjoy the hug she received from you, grumbling about how embarrassing this was, annoyed at just how warm the hug felt for her. Dr. Wasabi was chuckling throughout the whole thing, she knew Mustard was just being Mustard again, if she wasn’t liking it then what was that small smile she had? Heh!
Truffle Cookie couldn’t stop giggling when she received a kiss on the forehead from you, it certainly made the trip here worth it, she felt the energy to just prepare a whole tea date with you!
Snakefruit Cookie wasn’t expecting a surge of warmth and energy when you patted their head, they felt ready to take on the dragons again! They tried to be greedy and wanted you to pat their head longer, but was forced to move along. Those two guards of yours are such a bother…
“Come on, pet our heads more! You have to keep headpatting us.”
You suspected Earl Grey was responsible to giving them what they needed to make a purchase for this to happen. They were very receptive to you patting their heads, that even Pawn Black got greedy. Your suspicions were proven right when Earl Grey scurried to the front and took them away, apologizing to you while the Chess twins pouted.
Black Raisin tried her best to not allow the growing warmth to her face explode after receiving a kiss to the cheek from you. To actually receive that much of a direct show of affection with no hesitation from you flustered her greatly! She did like it in the end though!
———————————————————————
The sun was setting as you closed up your booth, bid your two guards farewell, and sigh with content as you to placed all of your equipment into your truck and placed your coin box in the passenger’s seat.
First a trip to your local charity and then back home-
“Heya, Y/N Cookie! Can your bestest friend get a spin!”
She didn’t need to, you gave her a large hug as you turned to her. She was surprised, but quickly returned it as she chuckled.
“I’ll never get tired of your hugs, Y/N. I like them THAT much hehe!”
Alright alright, you could spare a few minutes to hugging your best pal! You can only hope her grip gets less tighter when the time comes as you chuckled in return…
